The very rare Kangaroo Island Glossy Black-Cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus lathami halmaturinus).

The Kangaroo Island subspecies is listed as endangered, with a population of about 450 birds before the devastating bushfires of 2019/2020. 75% of their habitat in the western part of Kangaroo Island was impacted by the bushfires. They feed exclusively on Drooping She-oak seeds and only on particular trees in the forest, making their survival even more challenging. Yael and Rob, the Ecopia Retreat owners, have created a haven for these rare birds around Ecopia, planting She-oak trees and putting up bird boxes to help them survive. Black cockatoos are often in the sky in Tasmania. Depending on which way they're flying, people often say there's rain or good weather on the way.

Walking up to gym yesterday morning two small groups flew over, all screeching loudly and flying low, they were hard to miss!

I stopped to watch, they're beautiful things and much bigger than you think.

On the front steps of the flat I'd happened to stop in front of sat a young woman, she had a cigarette in one hand and was focused on her phone in the other hand....she hadn't even looked up to see what the noise was above her.

I thought that was sad.....

Spencer was taking identification photographs & videos for his records. In the distance we started to hear the celebratory calls of another new fledgling leaving the safety of the nest for the first time. Spencer & I couldn’t believe what we were hearing. The calls got louder & louder when the new trio finally arrived. In that moment I felt such great joy & sadness. We were standing there witnessing the miracle of life. Gap wing had come home with his precious newly fledged daughter & mate. All of the Glossies gave out a welcoming call to the new arrival. We felt like part of the Flock as a proud dad & friend circled over our heads. I burst into tears as reality hit that this new family was soon to lose their Forest. What made me feel worse was that this was being done by God’s people to God’s creatures. How could believers like me allow this to happen. This goes against everything I have ever been taught by the Church. Just because you have legal approval doesn’t mean it is morally acceptable. What kind of Church doesn’t listen to the Community it serves. I feel nothing but disappear at this point in time. All we have left are our hopes & our prayers. Let’s hope God is listening. Kangaroo island Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo Male (Calyptorhynchus funereus whitei). Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos population has declined during the last decades due to habitat loss, and it's now classified as vulnerable in South Australia.

I photographed this black cockatoo at the wildlife sanctuary established at Ecopia Retreat. I'm so grateful I was able to find it and watch it in its natural habitat.
