Scientists have rediscovered the black-naped pheasant-pigeon, a rare bird that was sighted 140 years ago, according to a report in the BBC. The footage of the bird was captured deep in the forest of Papua New Guinea. The bird hasn’t been documented by scientists since it was first described in 1882.
“To find something that’s been gone for that long, that you’re thinking is almost extinct, and then to figure out that it’s not extinct, it feels like finding a unicorn or a Bigfoot,” says John C. Mittermeier, director of the lost birds program at American Bird Conservancy.

Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon Rediscoverd After 140 Years
“When we collected the camera traps, I figured there was less than a one percent chance of getting a photo of the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon,” said Jordan Boersma, postdoctoral researcher at Cornell Lab of Ornithology and co-leader of the expedition team. “Then as I was scrolling through the photos, I was stunned by this photo of this bird walking right past our camera.”

Scientists have rediscovered the black-naped pheasant pigeon, a rare bird that was last sighted almost 140 years ago in Papua New Guinea.
The discovery was made in Fergusson Island, off the east coast of Papua New Guinea in September.
Researchers’ cameras caught sight of the rare bird, a species that has to been documented by scientists since it was first described in 1882, reported Audubon Magazine.

‘Lost’ pigeon found after more than a century
A September expedition to Papua New Guinea confirmed via video the existence of the black-naped pheasant pigeon, a critically endangered species that has not been reported for 140 years.
“For much of the trip, it seemed like we had no chance of finding this bird,” said Jordan Boersma, co-leader of the expedition and a postdoctoral researcher at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. “We were just two days away from the end of our time on Fergusson Island in Papua New Guinea when one of our remote cameras recorded the bird walking around and fanning its tail.”
The group captured the first-ever video and still photos of the bird, a large ground-dwelling species with a rust-colored back, a black head and body, and a bobbing pheasant-like tail. It may only exist far inland on Fergusson Island in hot, extremely rugged geothermal terrain laced with twisty rivers and dense with biting insects and leeches...
