Hi I have a 9 year old Sablepoot/booted bantam and I used to have 3 but the other two died so it's only her now. Anyway, she's been indoors since Novemeber now because my mother doesn't want her outside on her own. But someone else my mother met has offered us their pet Orpington hen who also came from a flock of 3 but is now the only one.
The internet says Orpingtons are docile but do you think it would be possible for these two chickens to get along given the size difference?
(Also bonus: any fun orpington trivia you know?)
Personally If i was in that situation I would pair her with other bantams. You could try to introduce them and they might get along but it's 50/50 whether or not the orpington might respond negatively to a much smaller chicken unfortunately. Of course if you do introduce them and it goes well then you can move forward with that plan. Orpingtons might be docile but especially hatchery quality birds can be just as clannish and dominant as other breeds from what I have seen. They are less likely to do serious damage but they could still not get along. It really depends on the personality of both birds, if your bantam is outgoing and confident, she might have an easier time.
Orpington funfacts- Orpingtons were created by a humble coachman named William Cook. The first color Orpingtons were was Black, and it was farmers in mid western America who took a serious liking to orpingtons after they were imported here. They were liked for their unique coloration (which was buff) and their utility as a dual purpose bird.

A new photo book is capturing the beauty of birds

A new photo book is capturing the beauty of birds
Imbued with wide-ranging symbolism – from joy or dread to death or divinity – the bird has long been a source of inspiration for creatives. Some of the best-known admirers of our feathered friends have ranged from Pablo Picasso to photographer Eric Hosking, whose 60-year career saw him break new ground in how birds are documented.
“Today, birds are a popular subject among professional
and enthusiast photographers the world over, not least because they are more accessible than many other creatures to photograph, but at the same time present an irresistible, fast-moving challenge,” writes Gemma Padley in the introduction to Hoxton Mini Press’ new bird-themed photo book.
Tim Flach, Gouldian Finch, 2021
Andrew Garn, Fido / Googly Eye [Pigeon], 2016–19
The latest tome from the indie publisher avoids the clichéd wildlife photography we’re used to seeing, instead featuring 28 thought-provoking and unusual projects from both famous and lesser-known photographers around the world.
Many of the images frame their subject matter in new and imaginative ways – some of them, such as Tom Leighton’s abstract, altered images, would not help you identify the birds they depict at all.
Yoshinori Mizutani, Untitled [Parakeets], 2013
Luke Stephenson, Spreo Starling #1, 2019
Joel Sartore’s photos, meanwhile, ask us to look each of his subjects in the eye – confronting us not just with their intelligence but their vulnerability, and Andrew Garn’s images of New York pigeons joyfully challenge the assumption that they are little more than city pests.
Aimed at bird lovers and photography enthusiasts alike, the book asks us to look at these mysterious winged creatures in a new light. “What unites all these projects is their ability to breathe new life into a timeless subject,” writes Padley.
Simen Johan, Untitled #163 [Flamingos], 2011
Dillon Marsh, Assimilation 11 [Sociable Weaver Nest], 2010
Søren Solkær, Black Sun #2 [European Starlings], 2016
Tamara Staples, Black Langshan Cockerel, 2009
“They artfully and playfully encourage us to look again at the boundless wonders of the avian world. And, ultimately, they remind us why we should care about these miraculous creatures hidden in plain sight: not only to protect their lives, but to enrich our own.”

CHIKKINS!
In case anyone is interested (but mostly because I just like to talk about chickens and no one can stop me) here’s a list of all the breeds I would like to one day have:
Black copper Marans (yes chocolate eggs plz) Orpingtons (they’re so FLUFFY) Araucana and/or Ameraucana (I’m a slut for coloured eggs ok) Cream Legbars (I love their feathers, also more coloured eggs) Welsumer (SPECKLES) Barnevelder (such a beautiful looking chicken, black laced are my faves) Isbar (green eggs! are you seeing the pattern yet?) Croad Langshan (pink eggs! also they’re gorgeous and apparently super sweet) Olive and/or Easter eggers (I just love coloured eggs, rainbow eggs for me) Bielefelder (so pretty) Groninger meeuw (local breed and pretty rare, but I think they’re beautiful)
Still contemplating:  Wyandottes (I mean just look at them) Sussex (especially love the speckled sussex) Vorwerk and/or Lakenvelder (another rare local breed that I think deserves some more love) Orloff (I just love the speckled feathers) Faverolles (SO FLUFFY) Swedish flower ( I guess I also have a thing for speckled birds)
So...yeah.......help

oh man the batch of chicks we got before the most recent 2020 peeps, we got ONE naked neck (among a smattering of black langshans mostly - we also got one Russian orloff who is one of the most beautiful chickens ive ever seen. like an Easter egger with much more distinct coloration) and she has become distinctly head of the pecking order. also a natural escape artist and very smart and curious bird. i was worried she would do poorly in the cold but apparently naked necks are reasonably cold hardy. i do have to chase her down in the summers and smather sunscreen all over her neck though which is one of the funniest and most absurd things i have had to do in my many years keeping chickens.

We have 7 lovely chickens, two were given to us as they kept running away from their previous home (Janey and Mings), one was a gift from my other half (Freckles), she was part of a pair, but the older chook passed this last month, then I have four that we hatched from eggs cared for by Freckles, I was supposed to be hatching them for a friend, but fell in love with the little puffy chicks and he kindly let me keep them. The hatchlings are two Australian Langshans (black with feathers on their legs), Snowy and Nigel (thought she was a boy until she laid an egg and she is the most independent of them) and two mixed (friend expected them to be brown  Hamburghs but they are definitely mixed with something) Caramel and Polly.  Polly has always liked perching on my wrist to get a head scratch and some seed, hence the name, like a pirate bird.
Hatching them was interesting. I was given 9 eggs in total, 5 live hatched, 1 didn’t make hatch and one egg, fertilsed but did not develop, two candled clear (unfertilised). One that hatched was a rooster, we named him Egor as he was very oddly shaped and thought he looked more like a bush turkey than a chook. Once he began crowing he was moved to a friend’s farm as we could not have him here. Freckles, mum-chook, was a great broody, turned the eggs regularly and looked after the chicks. I had put in fresh food (seed mix) and water in the cage for her, once the chicks hatched they were all eating the seed mix and drinking within 20-40 mins of being born. I gave them a lot of fresh plant matter, fruits and vege. Bananas were their favourite, they still are. Especially Nigel, she would do almost anything for some banana.  Once Freckles started to show signs of wanting to get up and forage I would get her out of the smaller cage (we put it on the ground in the main cage so the little ones and big ones socialsed with each other without the danger of aggression) each morning so she could do her thing but stay close to the little ones, she would call out when she wanted me to put her back in.  Once they all got a bit bigger and couldn’t fit through the mesh, I moved them to a larger cage, still within the main pen, again getting Freckles out each morning and putting her in in the evening so she could keep the little ones warm.  They all seemed to grow well and were quite content. Little Nigel had a slightly odd eye at birth, possible pressure point during development. And as she grew up we could see that her pupil stayed quite small, it did dilate but not by much. It did not stop her, she was the first to fly out of their nursery cage and the first to go and challenge one of the big chooks for her banana.
I never put them on chick starter, or had any special meal for them. I made sure they had full access to soil, grubs from my garden, seed mix, fruit and vege scraps and fresh water.
That was two years ago. The little ones grew well, and are very active and happy. The girls are great at eating all our scraps, trimming the grass down (never have to mow where they have been, or fertilise) and producing beautiful eggs.
I do not clip their wings, they have never left or tried to, even my two little adopted escapees. We have carpet pythons in the area so I always want them to be able to fly away if they need to. The local bush turkeys like to come and hang out, the tiny little babies even sneak into the cages just before door lock and sleep in the bottom. They are very cute and my chookies do not mind having them about. We had a big one that tried getting aggressive towards the girls, however they ganged up on him, and I hosed him with tank water when he was about, he has not come back in the yard after a couple of weeks of chasing.
I keep them healthy with fresh food, clean out their houses weekly and use diatomaceous earth on them and the cage/nesting boxes to keep lice and mites at bay, especially with the visiting wild turkeys bringing their little bodies into the hen house.
Oh and plus the girls make great fertiliser for the garden.

Roosters-Orpingtons
The original Black Orpington was bred by William Cook in 1886 by crossing Minorcas, Langshans and Plymouth Rocks to create a new breed.  His goal was to develop a hardy, fast growing chicken that laid well and yet had the table qualities the British market sought. Mr. Cook focused his breeding efforts on developing the body and productive traits of his poultry; in the process many birds came as they might in color pattern. Thus Mr. Cook had the bright idea to create many varieties of his Orpington chickens. He first introduced the Black, and then the White Orpington, the Buff, the Jubilee [Speckled], and the Spangled [Mottled]. His son-in-law, A.C. Gilbert, created the Blue and the Cuckoo Orpingtons.
Orpington chickens reached America by 1891. In 1903 William Cook himself brought over a large importation and showed them in America. Orpington chickens were recognized by the American Poultry Association as a standard bred in four varieties: Buff, 1902; Black, 1905; White, 1905; and Blue, 1923. Males weigh 10lbs, females 8 lbs.

I'm researching chicken breeds
We're not even close to being ready for chickens but I get such a kick out of researching animals and fantasizing about what the right chicken for us will be. I used to have 8 chickens when I was little and TBH I have no idea what breed they were. Just some brown and black hens that laid eggs and ate bugs and did their chickeny best. So I'm going down this list of egg laying breeds and I'm so f a s c i n a t e d by these animals omg. Did you know that there's an American Poultry Association?? which is the chicken version of the AKC?? I love Some of them are legit cracking me up. Jersey Giants, for example, are "not viable for meat production because they're slow to mature." Okay okay cool, I get that, I've got a giant dog. How slow are we talking? 6 months And I'm losing it because to me, slow to mature is Bandito, mister FIVE YEARS TO MATURE (probably). 6 months? Please 😂 But I'm legit thinking about one or two because apparently they make great pets, love to snuggle it up, and lay 3 eggs per week which is ideal for me. I also like the Langshan, Sussex, and Star.
