Cooking Crush: everything I wanted, and I don’t just like it because I’m an OffGun girlie at heart. It’s genuinely a perfect food romcom to balance all the other heavy shit airing right now.

The Sign: obsessed, it’s now appointment television.

Playboyy: intellectually interested in what it’s trying to say but not nearly as titillated by the pale imitations of porn as some of y’all.

WDYEY: steady as a rock, I missed Shiro and Kenji.

Middleman’s Love: fell way behind and I’m not enticed enough to go back. Might binge it when it finishes if y’all tell me it’s worth it.

The Whisperer: sad about how terrible it is, I would only endure this for The Dimple.

Shadow: part 2 dropping this week hell yeah.

Still haven’t started:

VIP Only: I have solemnly vowed to watch everything Taiwan puts out so I’ll be catching up soon.

Mr. Sahara & Toki-kun: Drama Shower has been so good this year, I’ll be picking this one up too.

7 Days Before Valentine: I still haven’t seen 180 Degrees Longitude Passes Through Us from the same team and @bengiyo thinks I should watch that first, so on hold.

Cherry Magic Thailand: my beloveds TayNew!!! I am actually looking forward to seeing what they do with this story because the original has some flaws I think Thai bl and TayNew specifically are well suited to address (I am talking about sex).

In conclusion: I’m trying to watch way too much, my head is probably gonna explode before end of year.

So… My Beautiful Man Season 2 is working. That’s the only BL that has my full attention right now. I’m just not getting snapped up by anything else at this moment in time…

My School President: adorable… but also kinda getting boring as it goes? I hate to say it but what’s even happening right now? They are dragging it out too long without enough plot to justify why there has been no tongue kissing yet.

Bed Friends: episode one was a snooze fest.

Oh my Assistant: dropped it.

Between Us: well… it started with a bang but overall it’s just… what? I don’t know. I feel the same about it as I did for it’s prequel-equal… just… okay about it. I mean, the pacing was bad. A lot of the dialogue was just… really bad and very unnatural. What should have been exciting or super emotional just kinda… wasn’t. The boys all look good together, everyone has great friendship-chemistry, but the plot structure wasn’t ideal. There could have been more comedy. I didn’t think anyone had any zing zing wow chemistry.

Moonlight Chicken: I feel like I am not watching the same show as everyone else… cause it’s good but I forget about it instantly.

The New Employee: cute… but I keep forgetting about it.

The End of the World With You: indie movie vibes… not bad not great

Candy Color Paradox: pretty good overall but I doubt I will ever rewatch it

My Tooth Your Love: I was really digging this one but those last few eps remain unwatched and I don’t know if I will ever both to finish it.

Takara-Kun & Amagi-kun: unexpectedly good. But I’ll never rewatch it.

Senpai this can’t be love: I mean… Japanese BL is it’s own thing. Cute but I dropped it.

I Told the Sunset About You: I’ve rewatched this a lot… or rather had it on in the background. Their chemistry is soooo good. it’s almost visual ASMR to me… sad ASMR… so much crying…

Secret Crush On You: silly but fun. Kinda overstayed its welcome…. I love the horny twink, he’s such a cool character.

Current BL watchlist since people have been posting theirs lately, and it’s pretty different from last time.

About Youth - It’s chock full of typical BL tropes, but it uses them to full advantage and is an emotionally intelligent show. Thank goodness I like the catchy OST this time. Minato Shouji Coin Laundry - I’ll miss this one and I adore how sensitively it’s been handling the subject matter and characters. The Eclipse - Loving the tension and loving it’s deeper political side. Super smart in the way it uses the school setting as allegory, both as in they are doing it well but also that this choice gives it wider appeal. My Only 12% - It’s good enough that I don’t care if it hurts me. And I just really love that it’s set c.2008, as someone who was a bit closer in age to the characters back then. Takara-kun & Amagi-kun - The awkwardness of first love. I think it’s great that they’re already a couple and the conversation they had last episode wasn’t something I expected from a JBL. Unforgotten Night - It’s a dumpster fire, but it’s my beloved dumpster fire and I’ll be sad to see it end this week. Vice Versa - It’s okay. I don’t know what else to say except it’s GMMTV being GMMTV in all the wrong ways and a lot will depend on where it goes from here. War of Y - Seng’s performance was great, I just don’t think you can really critique the the industry while at the same time throwing fuel on the fire by having the shipped couples be actual couples. Papa & Daddy - The ‘it’s not really a BL’ of the list. Please stop being this stressful and don’t leave us on another cliffhanger like last time. Oh! My Sunshine Night - Dropping for now because somehow it’s 16 episodes despite the fact that it’s all tropes, no plot. I’ll return to shrieking about how clefs work later.

Not currently rewatching anything or in the middle of anything old BL-wise. Non-BLs I’m watching are just What We Do In the Shadows for current and Devil Judge and Babylon 5 for old.

I used to think I wasn’t interested in high school set BLs, but looking at this list the top five are either set in high school or have at least one character in high school, and that is boggling to me. But they’re just so good. My top ten list at the end of the year is going to be interesting, if I can force myself to choose.

Pit Babe has everything. Racing. Omegaverse. Evil billionaires trafficking powered children. Breeding scheme. Kinky shit. High melodrama. BETRAYALS. Spice and fluff. Man tears. Inane plot logic and priorities. Not one not two not three but FOUR (and counting?) secretly adopted siblings. I love it here.

2024 BL Dramas Watchlist:

PERFECT PROPOSE dir. Horai Tadaaki

My memory is terrible so I wanted to do a breakdown of my stuff every once in a while. Might be monthly, might be whenever I feel like it.

QL - Currently Watching

🇹🇭1000 Years Old [10/12] - This is dragging and I am incredibly bored.

🇹🇭23.5 [4/12] - This show is incredibly cute and I'm smiling through the whole thing. Aylin is my favourite and I'm hoping against hope for the teachers to become a couple. Make it happen gmmtv!

🇹🇭Deep Night [6/8] - The long shots are killing me but the story is moving fast. There's a surprising amount of good communication and the throuple is almost inevitable a this point.

🇰🇷Jazz for Two [6/8] - This is the first bl show where I read the source material before the show and I wish I hadn't. The changes that were made just don't make sense to me, because I don't see how it serves the story. But putting that aside, the story feels rushed and the pacing is weird. The second couple doesn't read believable with this time frame. Anyway I might edit this post when I watch the last 2 episodes. [EDIT] Completed. Final thoughts here. 🇯🇵Love is Better The Second Time Around [4/6] - Why must you do this again Japan? 6 episodes for this one? I'm not happy about this. This show is so good. I love how the mains communicate, not to mention they are beautiful to watch.

🇯🇵My Strawberry Film[7/8] - I have no idea what this show is about nor it seems does it. Do I care at this point? Nope, not really. Let it be over.

🇹🇭To Be Continued [6/8] - This is getting into The Promise territory and I'm not amused. Another one that is dragging and I like the second couple but they barely have any screen time. I'll finish it because there are only two episodes left but I'll be sprinting to the finish line.

🇹🇼Unknown [7/12] - It hurts so good. The songs were killing me this episode. I really liked the separation, I think it was necessary for them. Yuan seems more mature and it will be interesting to see how it changes the relationship.

QL - Finished

🇹🇭Cherry Magic Th – What a wonderful surprise this was. Tay and New are beautiful together and their chemistry was on point. I really liked how the source material was used here.

🇯🇵Cherry Magic Anime – It was quite faithful to the manga with only a couple of deviations and of course it didn't cover everything but I really enjoyed watching yet another version of these characters.

🇹🇭Dead Friend Forever – It was quite a ride. I specially enjoyed the communal watching of this one and all the theories as more people tuned in. Didn't love the ending but it was better than I thought. Still not over White though. 🇯🇵Although I Love You, and You? - Started great, the middle was meh, and by the end I wasn't invested enough in the couple so even though it ended happy, it didn't make up for the rest of it. 🇯🇵Perfect Propose - Great all the way through. I loved this characters a lot and still think it's amazing how well the time was used here. 🇯🇵Ossan's Love Returns - It's Japan at it's finest. Love, food, chaos, found family and cherry blossoms. What more can I ask for? 🇯🇵She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat - My heart grew.🖤

🇹🇼Anti Reset - This is one of the most frustrating shows I've watched in a while. This started off strange and most of the show doesn't seem to know what it wanted to say about the AI part of it. It drove crazy on a weekly basis. But I thought their chemistry was really good and they are just an adorable couple. These 4 VBL series [Stay By My Side, You Are Mine, Vip Only] were a mixed bag for me. I think Stay By My Side is my favourite overall.

🇨🇳The Spirealm - First of all, Ruan Lan Zhu is absolutely gorgeous and his outfits are always perfection. The visuals are really good. This was definitely not a cheap production. The sets for all the doors are incredible. Talking only about the game, I gotta say the second door was my favourite. The bromance toes the line, but I'm not surprised this was taken down. I think if they'd kiss it would be less obvious than some of their scenes. I'm not going to spoil the ending but if you're thinking about watching here's your warning. A bit after the halfway point it gets incredibly sad and the ending is just heart-breaking.

Dropped 🇹🇭A Secretly Love [3/10] 🇹🇭Kiseki Chapter 2 [2/6] Also haven't started Two Worlds because I'm waiting to know if I should bother. I'm experiencing a bit of Thai bl fatigue so we'll see.

Takumi-kun 1: And The Spring Breeze Whispers (2007) - The editing is choppy as hell and it gets hard to understand the characters motivations. And the acting is not good. Yeah, not a fan of this one. Udagawachou de Matteteyo (2015) - This one is weird. I recently watched Life as a Girl so I admit that the comparison doesn't help this one at all. The idea is interesting but the execution is poor. There's a couple of scenes that are a bit hard to watch. In this particular story I think if we had a bit more insight to the characters motivations it would've helped me connect and feel more invested. In the end, for my particular goal it was fine I guess.

Vincenzo — i did not realize it was a comedy when starting. it’s great though.

Love By Chance — i love ae and pete (and the horny roommate). i’ve kind of stalled out though. took a break when mame started maming, and haven’t come back yet.

Cutie Pie — i have to be in the right mood to buy into the historical romance style of it all, but i generally like the characters.

Minato Shouji Coin Laundry — also stalled out but plan to finish. there are many things i love, but shin is the type of seme i want to throw in a lake, so it’s been hard to get through.

Hometown Cha Cha Cha — i started it like a year ago, before i even really knew what bl was. i liked it, but it’s not really made for binging, and then once i stopped i never went back. but both @petrichoraline and my sister-in-law recommended it to me recently, so i want to pick it up again.

Rewatching:

Nothing. There’s plenty I want to, but I’m just trying to keep up with the new stuff lol.

Everything? Can I just say that? But also I’m trying not to add anything new right now because I need to do real world things. And I’ve noticed that, now that my initial hyper-fixation has ebbed, I get overwhelmed if I’m watching too much at once.

Random thoughts about Sand/Ray (Only Friends ep 1)

Rewatched the first episode of Only Friends and I have a few (many) random thoughts, here are just the ones about Ray and Sand because they deserved a whole post (everyone else is in this other post) :

Ray mentions his dad in the first scene we ever see him in, getting mad at Sand who told him not to be a burden on other people and replying "are you my father ?"... Foreshadowing much ?

The first interaction between Ray and Sand ends with Sand telling Mew to take care of his friend, and you believe that's what Mew is doing but then next party he abandons him

Ray throwing up and his friends immediately letting him go and pushing him away is... funny in the context of the scene but again I think telling us something about how they're all going to treat him

(Sand/First opening and closing the intro is *chef's kiss*, he's not the main character clearly but as an outsider and a "morally straight" guy he's going to be a force to shake things up I'm sure)

Sand and Ray's second interaction immediately revolves around once again Ray being a burden but also Ray's friends not being present enough for him and Sand disapproves of both

Did Ray already drink and drive before this ? Did anyone stop him before?

Ray's throw up sound in this episode are truly awful and make me quite uncomfortable. Good acting though

Him immediately passing out on a random man's shoulder after being taken to this stranger's place does imply a worrying lack of survival instinct. Baby he could steal your livers ! or what's left of it

(The owner of YOLO bar is Yo, as reiterated many times by Ray and Sand, and given how often he's mentioned he must have a role in the story, but he's hasn't shown up yet ?) (Edit : didn't know Yo was played by Jennie so we have actually seen her around, just haven't gotten a proper scene with her, looking forward to really meeting her !)

Ray becoming aggressive and accusing Sand of stealing his stuff only after Sand says he didn't sleep with him and didn't even consider it seems to indicate that Ray truly thinks people can only take an interest in him for sex or for money. Arf this continues to get more sad

The fact that Ray actually checks his pockets when Sand gives him back his clothes is so indicative of what's actually important to him : not his safety or consent but his material possessions and external signs of wealth

Ray complaining to Mew that he got kicked out by Sand for no reasons is so rich, but again I think Ray truly doesn't realise how what he said was offensive because he's so closed in his own bubble

But Mew saying he thought Boston was taking care of Ray when he literally just asked Ray how he got home last night and knew that Boston refused to take care of Ray is so hypocritical ?! And goes to show he wasn't really bothered to make sure Ray had a way to go home safely. He assumed he'd be fine on his own and didn't care that much

Ray sad that his crush is talking to someone else and driving home alone in his fancy car in a tee shirt that says "Poor Boy" is High Comedy

Boston asking Ray why doesn't he just become Mew's boyfriend was such a dick move, but also Ray is so convincing at denying he would be ? Is it because he's so used to lying about this, or because he doesn't think he's worth Mew's affection so he doesn't even dream of being his boyfriend ?

Ray does have a habit of just exiting the situation for something that his friend all excuse as being one of his addictions (drinking, smoking) and they don't even try to stop him

Sand tells Ray he has his lighter because he got him drunk and stole from him with such confidence I don't care that he's joking he could be telling the truth and I'd find it hot

The moment Sand actually gets visibly angry is when Ray tells him that Sand caring is "boyfriend behaviors" and that's telling on how Sand is disgusted with the idea of being his boyfriend but also resents the fact that caring about being respected is something only boyfriends do... when in fact people who are only friends can too ! (see what I did there)

"You are mine" really is like a mixture between old-school K-Dramas, Japanese live action adaptions and how Chinese BLs used to be before all the censorship bs got worse. I feel like I've been transported back to the 2010s XD It's a silly little series that allows you to turn off your brain for a good 25 minutes. They also get some additional plus points from me for the height difference (I love the tall-smoll couples!) and the D/s elements they've sprinkled in in-between :)
