It’s a remnant of the last ice age where, during that time, the sea level rose to the point where sea water began to fill the basin. But when the glaciers receded, there was no place for these jellyfish or other fish to go. The Rafflesia patma has bloomed for 3 days and the weather in Bogor is scorching hot and dry (close to 30°C and 50% of relative humidity). Before this male flower (in a picture above, you can see I held a clump or tissue with anthers) wilted out and decaying, me and Bu @sofimdw decided to perform an all out sampling for histology analysis because the potential technical difficulties which won’t allow us to do analysis next time for a long period of time. In the process, 2 other flower knobs/buds are about to bloom within 2-4 weeks. Fascinatingly, one knob has overlapping perigones while another has spiraled perigones.
