▶️ Today's #BookBreakMonday excerpt is from Native Son by Richard Wright, 1940. Despite this being required reading in some schools, this was my first time reading this book. To say this book is dark is an understatement, but it is certainly worth the time and energy needed to consume Wright's words. Every single character suffered from one heinous act. Richard Wright explained in an essay, "The birth of Bigger Thomas goes back to my childhood, and there was not just one Bigger, but many of them, more than I could count and more than you suspect. Florence Johnson, white and a Chicago fireman’s wife, was raped and beaten to death in her bedroom at 4631 Lake Park Ave. on May 27, 1938. Tried and convicted of murdering her was Robert Nixon, shown here, an 18-year-old “slow-witted colored youth,” as the Tribune described him back then. On June 16, 1939, he was electrocuted in the Cook County Jail. Richard Wright’s 1940 classic novel, “Native Son,” is a fictional story of Bigger Thomas, who is based partially on the Chicago news accounts of Robert Nixon and the Johnson murder — news accounts that are difficult to read today because of their racist tone. In those stories, amid the repulsive and offensive detail, Wright found the model for his novel’s protagonist.
