Bidens aristosa

These don't have a 'good' common name. Bearded beggarticks, bur marigold, tickseed sunflower, Yankee lice. Seeds that cling to your clothes, you see. They're really going off right now, putting tons of yellow in unmowed field edges, roadside ditches, etc. Very showy, outdoing the goldenrod.

The forbes that are in bloom are actually a small percentage of the plant species in these ecosystems and this is only one time of the year. If you visit any time of the year outside of the dead of winter, you will find something in bloom. In just these photos the large forbes are mostly these species but their are plenty of smaller forbes in bloom as well.

Large forbes: 

Verbesina alternifolia,  Solidago altissima,  Lactuca biennis,  Lobelia siphilitica,  Eupatorium perfoliatum,  Impatiens capensis,  Lactuca canadensis,  Eutrochium maculatum,  Vernonia gigantea, Bidens polylepis ,  Bidens aristosa,  Pycnanthemum virginianum, and  Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii.

Not to overdrive my point; fen marl bed communities edge with marsh bidens, Kalm’s lobelia,  purple rattlesnakeroot, short grass/ boreal sedges and rushes, and autumn sneeze weed, mircro climate formed edge, semi barren, cold water supports dry species and boreal species. Microclimates edge holds intermediate species that are not necessarily tall grass or fen obligates, and do better with low competition. 

On the edge, mostly bidens,  Bidens aristosa, some marsh bidens,  Bidens trichosperma; back ground becomes significantly more competitive with swale meadow community.
