Apocalypse (Or, Why the Pacific Rim Theme Is My Ringtone)

this is a poem I wrote for the beyondthebreach pacific rim fanbook.  you can back it on kickstarter if you want a copy of the full book!  (it’s going to be such a cool book.  and not just because my poem’s in it.)

Apocalypse: 1. (noun) the complete destruction of the world                    2. (verb) to uncover or reveal

There are kaiju beneath me. They may not be tall as skyscrapers, with fangs sharp as moonlight or roars loud as thunder, but they lie in wait to petrify me nonetheless. Kaiju of Loneliness lurks beneath my bed, Kaiju of Self-Loathing lurks behind my mirror, Kaiju of Lethargy lurks beside my pillow.   Every day, they grow darker, hungrier, leaner.  Every day, they are closer to sinking into my heart, swallowing my mind, and stuffing my soul with sludge. They will destroy me, if I let them.

If I let them. I can fight those kaiju. I can build armor from my determination and capture starlight to forge into an unbreakable steel sword.  I can scream with the lungs of a thousand orphaned children and the kaiju will listen, they will bow, they will shrink to the smallest shadows -- invisible in the light of the sun. I can break them down.

Breaking the kaiju -- it’s simple. All I need to do is hear that song, that familiar drumbeat guitar melody pounding in time to my march down the hallway, through the breach, into the unknown. All I need to do is tell myself, Raleigh Becket stepped off the wall, Mako Mori fought for her family, Newt Geiszler drifted with a fucking kaiju.  I am not unlike them, and with them, I can do this. I can -- I will.

I will -- you will join me. This is not a suggestion -- not a question -- but an order: I order you to step into your Jaeger, raise your fist to the sky, tell the thunder that it is no match for you. You know as well as I that the world is only destined for destruction if humanity allows it. Only you can cancel your personal apocalypse.
