if you still doin that character thingy... Kanda, pls? or Krorykins, whichever u wanna do more, cuz i cannot choose 😅
*breathes in* This is it. This is how I finally get to write about two characters in one go because I also can’t choose XD I hope you don’t mind this getting long and thank you for giving me them, you beautiful human being! 🥺
Kanda
My otp for them: With Alma, no doubt (only trust!). Alma’s last moments break my heart, in a good way - they are soulmates meant to be. Their story is very sad and yet extremely touching and beautiful. I have a thing for lovers who meet again in their next lives, as I’m a sucker for the “red string of fate” myth. I get emotional just thinking of their relationship, and I wish, I really wish, that if they have another chance, that they can meet again and finally be happy together without being torn apart by the tragedies of war. My brotp for them: Weirdly enough, I’d say Allen! After Alma arc, Kanda seems to be a lot softer than before, and I’ve been loving the mutualism between him and Allen. They are very alike (as much as they hate to admit it), and that’s why they can understand each other well and know what the other needs without him needing to say anything. They’re both not good at talking about their feelings. Any other ships: With Lenalee! I know most people see their relationship as a brotherly one, but man, they have such good chemistry together. They bicker often, but just imagine what a killer duo they would be 💦 I’m weak for powerful couples. They know each other ever since they’re little, so they have shared a lot of moments together and know each other well, too - the scene in which Lenalee goes to meditate with him because she was scared of Lvellie was adorable; she feels safe around him. Their best friend: I want to say Marie! I think Kanda would rather people who don’t snoop around too much into his personal space, and Marie simply knows where these boundaries are at. He also knows how to deal very well with Kanda’s temper. He understands him but also knows of his flaws, yet he doesn’t question or confronts him, which I’m sure Kanda appreciates. He’s been recently showing that he cares a lot about Johnny as well, but deep down, Kanda does care about many of the people close to him.  My favorite nickname for them: It’s gotta be Bakanda, the pun is just great XD It doubles in greatness because, in my language/official release, this got translated as “BabaKanda”, which is also a pun! In Portuguese, “babaca” is the same as “idiot”. So I appreciate this silly pun a lot more thanks to that XD My favorite AU headcanon of them: I think that, sadly, Kanda won’t make it alive to the end of the story. I headcanon that, in case he does die, it’s after repaying his debt with Allen in a roundabout way; he did help Allen, but at the same time, he went to rest in peace together with Alma. And Allen did fight for them to be happy together, so I just... kinda want this to be true. It would pain me to see Kanda go, but this would be his happy ending and he deserves this. My favorite outfit they wear: A hard pick! Kanda is very handsome so basically, anything he puts on will look awesome. However, the one moment that made me go 💓 was when we saw him in civilian clothes (Chapter 208). Jesus Christ!? He was stunning. I really like his current Order uniform + outer coat combo too, looks so comfy and warm. Defining color: When I think of Kanda, I think of a mix of colors. Namely, Cobalt (#1338BE), Carnation (#FFA6C9) and Indigo (#4B0082). I believe it’s because of the Lotus Pain ending using this palette for the effects of the lotus flowers shining in contrast with the dark background colors. Would I date them: As handsome and amazing as he is, I wouldn’t. I know he’d hate my guts because I’m the type of person who wants to overthink and needlessly talk things over more than he should, and Kanda simply abhors the very idea of this 😂 He is a simpleminded guy, and I quite like that on him. First impression: I knew Kanda wouldn’t be the bland “angry asshole character” trope during his and Allen’s first mission together, in Martel. What he told Allen left a mark and made me think there was a lot more depth to him: "I hate the way naive people like you do things... And even more so, I hate people who don't keep their promises!" This one line told me a lot about his personality. Current impression: Pretty much my first impression, but with a lot more context! I really love Kanda and his past was a surprise to me. It made me appreciate him even more than I already did. Hogwarts House: I’d say Slytherin. He would stop at nothing until he found “that person”, and this House is well known for the ambition of its people. He’s also sharp and while not smarts smart, he is perceptive and intelligent in his own way; very skilled as well. Which Pokemon starter they’d be: Oshawott! Samurott looks as intimidating and stoic as Kanda, besides, it’s definitely based on a samurai, so they share this trait as well. Its first stages don’t look like much, but Samurott gets its own sword to fight with!
Krory
My otp for them: With Elliade! Now, this is one complex relationship. I admit I don’t like Elliade much but, at the same time, I understand her. For an Akuma, she really did love Krory; and he still loves her too. I just wish she hadn’t left him in the dark for so long. Her love was selfish and, while I understand how she felt, I feel bad for Krory since he thought he was a monster and that drove him to loneliness. I wish things could have been different, because their love was really pretty despite the downsides, their feelings for each other were very strong. My brotp for them: I want to say Marie! The latest Discussion Room (Vol.27) mentioned how good Krory is at many things, one of them being music. I love to think that he and Marie could have enjoyable long talks about their shared interest, they do look like the type of guys to appreciate music on a higher, more emotional level. Any other ships: I don’t have any, but I’ll make a mention to Miranda! While I don’t ship them personally, I totally see why people do. They’re both soft sweethearts who are always ready to do their best towards the people they care about - and they also share low self-esteem, sadly. The world has been very unfair with them 😢 Their best friend: Definitely Allen and Lavi! They were Krory’s first friends ever, and it’s clear how much he cares about them. My heart literally can’t take how they’re the first thoughts that cross Krory’s mind when he’s scared; it means that he feels accepted by them, they bring him comfort and make him feel safe and confident that everything will be alright. It’s just so sweet. My favorite nickname for them: Krorykins! If there’s one thing the English translation did right (and I can’t say that for like 80% of it), was translating “Kuro-chan” as “Krorykins”. It sounds so silly it’s cute 😅 My favorite AU headcanon of them: Just like I wrote about Miranda on her post, I headcanon he’s one of the people to either drop out of the Order to side with Allen, or actively help him in other ways. I think it’s not a mere coincidence Hoshino-sensei had specifically him, one of the people who cherish Allen the most, accompany Chaozii to go after him. I’m observing with great interest, as they might meet again sometime soon. It broke my heart to see him wanting to see Allen but, at the same time, wishing he had escaped safely. My favorite outfit they wear: There’s only one answer to this question, and it’s his casual clothes! He looks so elegant and fancy, so handsome yet so adorable! I mean, just look at him! Defining color: When I think of Krory, I think of deep red, a crimson shade like Carmine (#960019). I’m very sure it’s because of his Innocence. Would I date them: Maybe? I think I’d like befriending him more than dating him. He’s close to me in age though (unlike most of the characters I’ve written about so far XD) so I’d be down to it. Imagine dating a sweet guy who not only could cook you your favorite dishes but also has a more assertive, wilder side to him. Sounds like the complete package. First impression: Who is this? He looks scary but my intuition tells me there’s more than it meets the eye. Oh, he’s crying. He’s worried...? That’s too sweet, I’m betting he’s not a villain. Current impression: Well, he wasn’t a villain just like I had thought! Krory is an amazing but underrated character, he definitely deserves more love and appreciation. I love his personality, but what I love the most about him is how he had everything to be the “plain edgy, shady character” and then this notion was completely twisted around. I love it when things aren’t just about appearance. Hogwarts House: I see him being in Hufflepuff! The best people I know (namely, my best friend and spouse) are from this House and while they’re sweet and caring people, there’s also a lot to them more than it meets the eye, just like with Krory! Hufflepuffs are dedicated, loyal, and capable. Which Pokemon starter they’d be: Great question because when you think of him, you’d instantly think of a bat Pokémon, right? haha But I’d give him Sobble, I think! Poor shy crybaby that gets to go from water to wine upon evolving into its last stage, which is completely fabulous and badass! Drizzile even has the prominent bang falling on its face, while Inteleon has what could look like how Krory’s bang gets upward when his Innocence is activated 🤔

Netflix’s ‘Tiny Pretty Things’: AKA, How Not to Adapt a YA Duology
I was going to write this after I finished the series, but 4,25 episodes in, I got too mad about things. There is so much that went wrong with this adaptation, and I’m pissed. This is a rant about how Netflix fucked up one of my favourite books of all time.
Spoilers abound, reader beware.
Background: Tiny Pretty Things/Shiny Broken Pieces was originally a YA book duology written by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton about a (fictional) elite ballet academy in New York City. There are three main POVs in the books: Bette, your stereotypically blonde ballerina who’s got a pill addiction; June, a half-Korean, half-white dancer struggling with an eating disorder; and Giselle (Gigi), the new girl who happens to be black in an art that is still very, very lacking in the diversity department. Competition can turn downright cruel sometimes, and it happens a lot in the books. I first read the duology in fall of 2019 and was immediately drawn to it (hello, ex-ballerina here). I’ve probably read it about five times, and so when I heard that it was going to be a Netflix show when watching a documentary about Debbie Allen’s dance school a couple of weeks ago, I got excited--what could go wrong?
Oh, dear me.
What They Changed and Why It Matters
The Setting: Instead of New York City, the Netflix adaptation is set in Chicago. I’m not entirely sure why they did this--was it because it would be less expensive to film in Chicago? Anyways, the setting was an integral part of the books and to change it to Chicago doesn’t really make sense.
Gigi’s Name and Backstory: She’s now ‘Neveah’ and her mother is incarcerated; she also has a brother who is in a wheelchair. No sign of the heart condition that was potentially life-threatening. In the books, her name is very significant, as she was named after the ballet Giselle--a ballet that is eventually performed at the end of the first book. Because she rises to the top after coming to the ABA, a lot of nasty shit happens to her: glass in her shoes, her EKG getting stolen, cockroaches… She also gets into a relationship with Bette’s forever boyfriend, Alec, who seems to have been renamed Oren in the Netflix series and it doesn’t happen.
June’s Backstory: Her entire backstory got changed, which is a shame because out of the three main POVs, June was my favourite in the books. June’s mother used to be a dancer but left the dance world after she got pregnant, eventually beginning her own business and is very successful on her own. Thing is, June’s father was a dancer as well, and is now one of the big shots at the academy. Before she was born, her parents signed an agreement: so long as her mother said nothing about who her baby’s father was, she would inherit the contents of a trust fund set up for her when she turned eighteen. It’s never actually said how the relationship ended, but June sees it as her father ‘abandoning’ her mother. Because her father was white, she doesn’t speak Korean, and she doesn’t look ‘white enough’ or ‘Asian enough’, she’s constantly mocked by the (fully) Korean dancers at the school, including her ex-best friend, Sei-Jin. Why did they fall out? Sei-Jin kissed her and then spread rumours that June was the lesbian. Another main part of her story that was cut out is her anorexia/bulimia.
Bette’s Crazy Mother: Rather than being respected and a member of the board, Bette’s mother in the books is a raging alcoholic after her divorce and takes it out on her younger daughter. The older one, of course, can do no wrong. She’s essentially a joke to the ballet world, one who attempts to make problems go away with a fat check.
All the Male Characters’ Names: Alec is now Oren, Henri is now Nabil, Will is now Shane, and Mr. Lucas (aka June’s dad) doesn’t seem to exist.
Cassie: Rather than being drugged and dropped on purpose during a pas exercise and having to go to rehab, she’s now fallen (or been pushed) off of a roof and is in a coma. Fun times.
Why So Many Sex Scenes…
When I saw ass in the first episode, I knew it wasn’t a good sign. There’s maybe one or two sex scenes in the entire duology, and even then, they were very mild. There was no need for a sex scene every episode like there is in the Netflix adaptation. Who greenlit that?
How Can They Fix It?
Pull the entire thing and do a faithful adaptation.

Beware of alcoholic coma bc it's gonna happen by the end of act 1
Spoiler: during Tatoue moi he jumps 8 times in 10 seconds. And it's just the beginning of the song.
I swear you don't want this. Make any rules you'd like but not this one.

I know that the legal drinking age is very different from country to country, but I think that having a bad experience with alcohol is more frequent than we think and that not all the people know how to behave when alcohol is offered, especially for the first time.
So, this is my list of advice, gained through my personal experience (or that of my friends):
Always drink where you feel safe and be aware of your surrounding: you can't be sure 100% but it's always better to be with someone you trust in a place that is not inherently dangerous. You'll want to go home safe and sound.
Always eat carbohydrates beforehand: they slow down the effect of the alcohol and you'll probably avoid a hangover the morning after.
The alcohol by volume must not decrease. So, you can drink a glass of wine after a beer, but not the other way round.
Cocktails have more alcohol by volume than beer or wine: the fruity taste hides it very well, so, even if you don't feel it, you'll be drunk in no time.
Know how well you can resist alcohol: I don't forbid you to drink, but be wary when the nice buzz in your head becomes a dizziness and you won't be the one who embarrassed themselves with some pathetic drama.
If you drink because it makes you happy, you'll have to meditate about it:  if for now it isn't a problem, it'll become one soon. Alcohol can have some nice effects on people but it isn't the key to happiness: it's just an escape, albeit a pleasant one.
Beware of who offers you something to drink: often they have other reasons to do so. Especially if you don't see the bartender preparing it: you'll never know if there's some kind of drug in it.
If it's possible, get to know what you drink. You'll appreciate it more, you'll probably acquired a reputation as a connoisseur and you'll know the effect on you.
Alcohol isn't cheap and makes you gain weight. Also it makes you sweat, so it's not hot if you are on a date with the person of your dreams.
Don't overdo it, especially the first time: everyone is different and if your friend can drink Thor under the table, good for them. You don't know your resistance and you'll risk a alcohol coma, which can kill you if not treated in time. Probably at the beginning you won't notice you're drunk and will keep drinking but alcohol always strikes back.
Obviously don't drive/ride when you're drunk: it's just dangerous and stupid.
If you don't want to drink, don't do it: screw what they say, you don't need it to party. Probably you would be needed if the situation gets unsafe, and I don't need to say it's hilarious to be sober and watch the drunken ones doing stupid things.
Try and drink only during the evening: drinking at lunch can make you sleepy and you simply should not drink in the morning.
Make drinking a ritual: sharing a glass of wine with friends is more enjoyable than be sloshed somewhere alone and you'll not need another one because you'll be busy chatting and having fun.
You're responsible for your friends, when you go out drinking together: make sure they're safe and don't lose sight of them even for a minute, because you'll regret it.
Before going to sleep, drink a lot of water: alcohol dehydrates you and in the morning you'll be better.
If you have a hangover: drink water, take an aspirin and a hot shower, eat bread with honey. If don’t feel too much in pain, go for a run or to the gym: sweating helps to eliminate alcohol out of your system.
Alcohol doesn't keep you warm. In fact, it's the contrary: it makes you sweat and in the end you'll be colder than before.
It’s normal not to enjoy the taste of alcohol in general. Probably it’s because of your genes or you just need to get used to it.
Drinking or not is your choice: nobody has the right to make you feel bad about it. Just pay attention if your friends are worried about your consumption of alcohol because they’re probably right and they’re warning you because they love you.

In my experience as Filthy Papist ™, both irl and online, there are 4 main general categories of Catholics and Catholic culture (of course this varies by region):
Category 1) Disgruntled Ex Catholics: (like me) often educated in The Mother Church and it’s bullshit, which is why they’re now lapsed. Can still argue the finer points of theology due to the education they received as kids and teens, but think it’s crap, and mainly use their childhood/teen education to antagonize Catholic category (3). Like category 2, likes alcohol, although cat. 1 usually goes in harder than cat 2 (but not always, beware lest you get your ass drunk into a coma by some sweet, polite liberal Catholic girl). Still has a weird fondness for Mary though because tbh she did seem pretty badass, outside of the church portrayal of her as the perfect submissive woman, and may do the sign of the cross as a reflex when nervous
Category 2) Catholics who are still observant and very well educated in the church, but also willing to criticize, listen to other people’s criticisms, and have a non-meanspirited sense of humor about the whole thing, because they recognize that spirituality, even in Catholicism, is more than just mindlessly taking marching orders from another person. Generally are naive at worst, but usually sweet hearted, well educated, and don’t try to impose on anyone who isn’t interested. If you want to talk about it, they’re enthusiastic about it, but they’ll wait until you ask, and try to not not pressure you
Category 3: Conservative Catholics. Absolute insufferable fucking demons who are the most boring people around, due to the fact that they have the entire popemobile jammed up their eternally clenched ass. Category 1 and 2 usually hate them, although cat.2 is usually less belligerent and more low key about their hatred. Category 3 lovrs to whine about decadence and heretics, which is why categories 1 and 2 think they’re annoying, bigoted, no fun having fucks. Category 3 also includes right wing gits who convert to Catholicism because they think it’s more Authentic Evropean without all the Degeneracy and heresy. Loves to accuse other Catholics if being ~cafeteria Catholics~
Not listed as a category because fuck you nerds: sedevacantists, Mel Gibson and his dad, literally anybody who whines about Vatican II. Literally every other Catholic hates these annoying fucks, even the Virgin Mary thinks they’re lame as shit

Poisonous Plants: Identify Poison, Toxic, & Dangerous (How To List)
Plants are beautiful and if you’re a plant lover, chances are high that you’ve got one or more house plants. But did you know that several common house plants can be poisonous?
Let’s discuss some of the most poisonous plants to be aware of when it comes to child safety or wilderness survival.
Which plants are poisonous to humans?
Here is a list of common and uncommon poisonous plants you should look out for. We also include what parts of the plants you need to be aware of specifically.
Some parts of the plant may only cause skin rashes, while others may cause vomiting or even death from toxic leaves, seeds, or berries.
It’s important to know what to look for in case you have to call poison control. We’ve included photos below to make each one easier to identify.
Helpful resources:

How to tell if a Snake is Poisonous or Not (Non Venomous vs Most Dangerous)
https://survivalistgear.co/emergency-survival-kit/
Water Hemlock (Cicuta maculata)
This is one of the most poisonous plants in North America. The Water hemlock plant falls in the carrot family and looks like the Queen Anne’s lace (Daucus carota.) plant While it’s often mistaken with edible celery or parsnips, this plant contains poisonous cicutoxin in its toxic roots.
Eating the wrong parts of the plant with water hemlock can cause abdominal cramps, vomiting diarrhea, painful convulsions, nausea, and may cause death in extreme cases.
Survivors may have to live with lasting tremors and amnesia.  Call 911 or poison control immediately if you think an animal or human has eaten it.
Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum)
If you aren’t familiar with the differences, Poison Hemlock’s leaves, and even other parts, can look similar to popular plants used for food – like Queen Anne’s lace, yarrow, wild fennel, and elderflower.
Even though it may not be as deadly as Water Hemlock, Poison Hemlock is common in many areas, and still dangerous.
ALL parts of the plant (seeds, flowers, leaves, berries) are poison and contain alkaloids that are toxic for your nervous system, small doses of the poison may upset your system and even cause vomiting, diarrhea, and death from respiratory collapse if eaten.
Note: Poison Hemlock has nothing to do with the Hemlock Tree species which is edible.
Poison Sumac (Toxicodendron Vernix)
Also known as thunderwood, Poison sumac  is a common, woody shrub usually found in wet areas like swamps and forests with hardwood or pinewood.
Technically Poison Sumac isn’t poisonous, but contact with the leaves on skin can cause an itching , burning reaction because of an oil called urushiol. Poison sumac is more toxic for skin contact than poison ivy and poison oak.
Poison Oak (Toxicodendron Diversilobum)
Poison Oak is also a common, woody shrub that can be found in Western North America. It also grows in wet, marshy areas like swamps or in forrests. Skin contact with the leaves and even other parts of Poison Oak can cause rashes that itch and blister.
Poison Ivy (Toxicodendron Radicans)
Poison ivy is a common, flowering plant commonly found in Asian and Eastern North America. The urushiol oil resin in poison ivy can be found on the roots, leaves, and even stem parts of the plant.
It’s very sticky and can even attach to parts of your clothing. Skin contact with with leaves of a Poison Ivy plant will cause a blistering, uncomfortable rash.
Rosary Pea (Abrus Precatorius)
Rosary Pea, or jequirity beans, are red seeds that have a black spot on them, making the seeds popular to use in jewelry and toys. All parts of the plant are toxic – but the seeds of the plant are especially poisonous for humans.
Eating toxic seeds orally from the plant may cause issues with the GI system including vomiting diarrhea, but rarely causes death. The plant is slender, perennial climber, and has long, pinnate-leafleted leaves and red seeds.
Deadly Nightshade (Atropa Belladonna)
This poisonous plant bears attractive and sweet berries. Deadly Nightshade can lure both children and adults into eating them.
The plant is a native of waste or wooded areas in the south and central Eurasia. It has poisonous leaves and its berries are black, shiny, and the size of cherries.
Apart from its poisonous leaves and berries, deadly nightshade also contains scopolamine and atropine in its roots and stem. Consuming this plant can cause involuntary muscle paralysis. Getting into contact with the plant leaves may cause severe skin irritation.
Bittersweet Nightshade (Solanum Dulcamara)
This poison plant is highly toxic – especially for children. It has bright-colored berries that attract both animals and humans.
Bittersweet nightshade is often mistaken with Oriental bittersweet and American bittersweet plants which explains why many homeowners are unable to identify the plant.
White Snakeroot (Ageratina Altissima)
It’s known as the root that caused Nancy Hanks’ (Abraham Lincoln’s mother) death. White snakeroot or Ageratina altissima is one of the poisonous herbs in North America. It has flat-topped bundles of tiny white flowers and contains a deadly alcohol referred to as trematol.
Some people have died from ingesting toxic plants or leaves directly. However, Nancy Hanks death was from consuming milk from a cow that had fed on the plant. White snakeroot is so poisonous that the milk and meat from poisoned domestic animals or pets can pass poison to humans.
Symptoms vary from one person to the other and can include nausea, reduced appetite, digestive discomfort, vomiting, and body weakness. Some people experience abnormal blood acidity, an overly red tongue, or death in extreme cases.
Today, farmers understand the large toxicity of the vines and are quick to remove them from animal feed.
Chinese Lanterns (Physalis Alkekengi)
Chinese lanterns are related to bittersweet nightshade. It’s often grown by craft lovers and comes with green pod husks that become yellow during summer and rich orange by fall. The Chinese lanterns’ bright pods are used in dried wreaths and floral arrangements.
Any part of the plant, including the leaves and stems, are harmful and symptoms can include numbness, low temperature, headaches, breathing issues, stomach aches, vomiting and diarrhea, and dilated pupils.
Castor Bean (Ricinus Communis)
The castor bean is a charming plant often grown for ornamental purposes because of its flower, leaves, and foliage. The refined seeds of the castor bean plant produce castor oil. However, they contain ricin, a poison that makes them deadly in small amounts.
Even though castor oil is so beneficial, all it takes to kill a child or an adult is one and eight seeds respectively. Ricin restricts the combination of proteins in body cells and can cause severe diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, or even be fatal, resulting in death. Death caused by poisonous things often occurs from accidental ingestion.
Castor oil is refined to be safe for use, though, so you don’t need worry about ricin when using it as a treatment.
Laurel Hedges
Except for Bay Laurel, every other type of hedge is toxic and produces hydrocyanic acid which is harmful for animals and humans. Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, convulsions and difficulty walking or standing.

What flowers can kill you?
Flowers are usually bright and beautiful but can also be poisonous. Knowing how to identify flowers like the Nerium Oleander or the bleeding heart helps you tell the difference between dangerous flowers and safe flowers.
If you or someone else is experiencing the symptoms listed below, make sure and call 911 or poison control.
Here is a list of poisonous flowers and the parts (like berries, leaves, or seeds) you should beware of.
Nerium Oleander
Oleander is one of the most poisonous wild flowers. Oleander is also known as the sweetly scented killer. You’ll notice that Oleander blossoms are magenta, crimson, or creamy white.
Cases of accidental poisoning from Oleander have been reported from campers who burn oleander branches to roast marshmallows and hotdogs.
Are oleander flowers poisonous to touch and can Oleander flowers cause skin irritation? Yes, they can. So toxic is the blossom that consuming honey from bees that consumed nectar from the Oleander plant can cause death. Poison from the Oleander plant causes irregular heart beats.
Lily of the Valley
These small white bell-shaped flowers with a strong sweet-smelling aroma. However, direct contact causes hot flushes, severe headaches, irritability, hallucinations, and red patches of clammy and cold skin.
It’s important to understand that the water you use to put cut lily-of-the-valley flowers may contain traces of convallatoxin. This substance can increase heart contractions.
Water Hemlock
These are tiny white wildflowers that are attractive but deadly. Poison in the water hemlock has a carrot scent but it can damage your central nervous system within a short time.
The effects of water hemlock poison include convulsions and seizures that can be severe due to cardiovascular collapse and asphyxia (both of which can cause death).
Angel’s Trumpet
Let not the name of this plant fool you. This is one of the poisonous trees that bear trumpet-shaped colorful hanging blooms. While this plant can be an eye-catching patio tree it contains atropine and scopolamine both of which are poisons and hallucinogens.
This whole plant is extremely poisonous but its highest toxin concentration is in the seeds. Exposure to these toxins may result in a coma, hallucinations, and delirium.
What kind of mushrooms can kill you?
If you love mushrooms you know that not all of them are safe to eat. Can you, however, differentiate poisonous mushrooms from the non-poisonous ones? Here is a list of poisonous mushrooms you should avoid.
Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria)
This is the recognizable toadstool in children’s fairy tales. You can easily identify it from its white spots and bright red cap. This fungus is poisonous to both animals and humans.
The main poisonous agents in Fly Agaric are ibotenic and muscimol acid. These toxins affect the central nervous system and cause nausea, loss of coordination, lack of sleep, and hallucinations. The effects start showing approximately one hour after consumption but they’re hardly deadly.
Angel wing (Pleurocybella porrigens)
This type of mushroom is found across the Northern Hemisphere and derives its name from its appearance and deadly features.
Angel Wing was once edible but this changed when almost 60 people got sick after consuming them in Japan. 17 out of these people died. An old man would later die in 2009 after consuming angel wings mushrooms.
A big percentage of the people who died, however, had pre-existing liver or kidney complications. While the mode of poisoning is yet to be understood scientists believe it contains high levels of cyanide.
Deadly Dapperling (Lepiota sp.)
This is a tiny, delicious looking mushroom that belongs to the Lepiota family. It contains amatoxin, a poisonous substance that can damage the liver.
This toxin is associated with up to 90% of all mushroom poison-related deaths. Symptoms of exposure to this toxin include gastrointestinal-intestinal pain. Deadly Dapperling grows in conifer forests across North America and Europe.

Don’t give in to the begging: These Thanksgiving foods are dangerous for your dog
TAMPA, Fla. – Thanksgiving is this week and many of us are getting ready to gather with loved ones and fill our plates with delicious foods.
But beware – many of the foods you’re looking forward to can be dangerous for your dog.
Some Thanksgiving foods may seem healthy and safe for your pet, but experts say those seemingly OK foods can be dangerous due to gravies, sauces and marinades.
Here are the foods you should make sure to keep away from your furry friend this holiday season:
Cooked bones
Cooked bones can cause serious digestive issues for your pet. PetSmart says the bones can splinter and get lodged in their gums, throat or intestinal tract.
So if you do give your dog some turkey, make sure it’s boneless. You should also make sure it’s well-cooked. The ASPCA says raw or undercooked turkey can contain salmonella bacteria.
Onions, garlic, scallions and chives
These foods contain thiosulphate, whether they are raw or uncooked. The substance can damage your pet’s red blood cells and cause gastrointestinal upset, breathlessness, diarrhea and vomiting.
Gum, mints, candy, baked goods (Xylitol)
Xylitol is a sugar substitute found in many candies and baked goods that is extremely dangerous for dogs. The substance is toxic to them and could even be deadly. It can cause dangerously low blood sugar and liver damage.
The ASPCA says initial signs of toxicosis include vomiting, lethargy and loss of coordination. Seizures are also possible.
Chocolate
Chocolate is widely known to be a dangerous food for dogs. It contains theobromine, a substance that can cause issues like overstimulation of the heart, hyperactivity, tremors, seizures and, in extreme cases, death.
Different kinds of chocolates have different levels of theobromine. Unsweetened baker’s chocolate and cocoa powder are considered two of the most toxic types. White chocolate is the least toxic because it has the lowest amount of theobromine, according to the American Kennel Club.
If you think your dog ate chocolate, you should make sure to monitor for signs of toxicity like vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, increased urination and elevated or abnormal heart rate.
Uncooked yeast dough
Raw dough is toxic for dogs because the yeast continues to convert sugars to carbon dioxide gas and alcohol, the ASPCA says.
That can cause abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, disorientation and even depression in your pet, according to PetSmart. It can also trigger ethanol poisoning.
Alcohol
Alcohol can also cause ethanol poisoning in pets, which is why you should never let them have any food or drink that contains alcohol.
Ethanol poisoning can lead to severe health issues like difficulty breathing, tremors, abnormal blood acidity, central nervous depression and decreased coordination. In extreme cases, it can cause a coma or even death.
Caffeine
Caffeine contains substances similar to those found in chocolate, and should not be given to dogs. That means coffee, soda, caffeine pills and energy drinks are all off limits.
They can cause hyperactivity, restlessness, vomiting, elevated blood pressure, elevated heart rate, seizures and other dangerous systems, according to PetSmart.
Macadamia nuts
PetSmart says macadamia nuts can cause severe reactions like muscular weakness, disorientation, depression, tremors and abdominal pain.
Grapes, raisins
Grapes and raisins can cause toxicity and major health concerns like severe gastrointestinal upset and kidney failure.
Other foods the ASPCA says you should avoid feeding your pet include avocado, citrus, dairy, raw or undercooked meat and eggs and salty snack foods.
If your pet does get into any of the food this Thanksgiving or is showing any signs of illness, you should call your veterinarian or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661.
You can learn more from PetSmart here or from the ASPCA here.

Lighten Your Lows: 10 Proven Strategies for Preventing Low Blood Sugar
By Gary Scheiner MS, CDE
For those who use insulin, hypoglycemia presents a serious threat to one’s physical, intellectual and emotional well-being. The brain is one of the first organs to be affected by low blood sugar. When the brain receives inadequate fuel, confusion and poor decision-making often result. Prolonged lows can lead to loss of consciousness, coma and possibly even death.
Personal performance is another area affected by hypoglycemia. The ability to perform in sports, school, work and social situations is affected negatively by low blood sugar. Having low blood sugar affects our movements, our thoughts, and virtually everything we say and do.
I think we’re all in agreement that hypoglycemia is something to avoid. But what is realistic? Should we not tolerate any low blood sugars? Most insulin users need to accept that an occasional low will occur. A couple of mild lows per week is not unreasonable.
What is not reasonable is to experience severe or frequent bouts of hypoglycemia. In general, if more than 10% (1 out of 10) of your readings at a certain time of day are below 70 mg/dl (or 80 for very young children), that is probably too many.
While it may not be possible to avoid lows entirely, there are many things that can be done to minimize their incidence and severity.
1. Match your insulin program to your needs.
The “peaks and valleys” in your insulin should coincide with the peaks and valleys in your blood sugar levels. This usually means utilizing a “basal/bolus” insulin approach – a long-acting insulin (glargine, detemir or degludec) working at a low level throughout the day and night, and rapid-acting insulin at each meal/snack, or an insulin pump.
Use of intermediate insulin (NPH) or premixed insulin (70/30 or 75/25) during the day sets you up for lows if anything changes in your usual routine. Also, at mealtimes, it is better to use a rapid-acting insulin analog (aspart, glulisine or lispro) then Regular insulin because the rapid analogs finish working earlier and are less likely to cause pre-meal lows.
2. Set an appropriate target.
Work with your healthcare team to determine an ideal pre-meal blood sugar level. This is the level that you “aim for” when making your mealtime dosing decisions. For most people with diabetes who take insulin, this is usually 100 or 120. Aiming for lower targets does not leave much margin for error, and may result in a greater frequency of low blood sugars.
3. “Cover” your highs correctly.
Each unit of insulin will cause the blood sugar to drop by a certain amount, but the amount may vary by time of day. For many people, each unit lowers to the blood sugar more at nighttime than during the day. Make sure your “correction” doses take this into account. Also, be certain to account for “unused” insulin – the amount that is still active from the previous dose. With rapid-acting insulin analogs, it usually takes about 4 hours for the insulin’s activity to fade completely.
4. Adjust based on carb intake.
Carbohydrates have a profound influence on blood sugar levels. Learn to match your mealtime insulin dose to your carb intake. That way, you can safely adjust your insulin when you eat more or less carbs than usual. And don’t forget to subtract fiber from your carb counts: Fiber is included in the total carbohydrates, but it does not raise blood sugar.
5. Extend/delay your mealtime insulin when necessary.
Not all carbs digest at the same rate. For instance, foods with a low glycemic index value (such as pasta, beans and dairy products) may take several hours to raise the blood sugar level. If you take your full dose of rapid-acting insulin before your meal, the insulin would peak long before the blood sugar rises, resulting in hypoglycemia. Delaying your mealtime insulin (if you take injections) or using and extended bolus feature (if you use a pump) can work much better in these types of situations.
6. Adjust for physical activity.
Most form of physical activity will lower blood sugar levels by accelerating the uptake of glucose by muscle cells and making them more sensitive to insulin. It is reasonable to reduce your mealtime insulin when physical activity is anticipated after a meal. For activity that will take place before or between meals, check your blood sugar and take a carbohydrate-containing snack before exercising.
7. Beware of alcohol’s effects.
While many alcoholic drinks contain carbohydrates that raise blood sugar levels fairly quickly, the alcohol itself has a tendency to make blood sugars drop several hours later. This is because alcohol inhibits the liver’s secretion of glucose into the bloodstream. When the liver is releasing less sugar than usual, the blood sugar level may drop. It may be necessary to lower your basal insulin after drinking, or consume carbohydrate-containing snacks (without insulin) to prevent hypoglycemia overnight.
8. Check often.
Managing blood sugars is a lot like driving a car. If you pay attention and keep your hands on the wheel, you’re not likely to crash. Close your eyes or let go of the wheel for too long and you’ll probably wind up in a ditch. Likewise, the more often you check your blood sugar, the less likely you are to suffer from extreme highs and lows. At a minimum, checking before breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime will allow you to catch potential problems before they become too serious.
9. Consider a CGM.
Continuous glucose monitors have built-in alerts to let you know when your glucose level is approaching a low range. Although they don’t catch every low, they will catch the vast majority before you can sense them on your own.
10. If it’s broke, fix it.
Take a look at your blood sugar values every couple of weeks. If you see too many lows at a particular time of day, do something about it! Don’t keep doing the same things over and over, expecting different results.
