I’ve noticed that a point of focus of the dazatsu dynamic in this corner of fandom is the mentor/mentee trope for Dazai and Atsushi and...I have many thoughts. Some long ramblings ahead:
Dazai vouched for Atsushi and took him in as his junior as Fukuzawa ordered. But the rest of the Agency takes on the role of mentor. Atsushi has gone out on cases with other members like Tanizaki, Ranpo, and Kunikida. He trains with Kunikida.
Beyond that, he follows Dazai’s orders but the same goes for everyone else who is Atsushi’s superior. Dazai isn’t exactly dogging Atsushi’s heels, fretting about his learning curve. Atsushi runs free and makes his own decisions when he’s under pressure (there’s something to be said here about trust, Dazai keeps trusting this boy to make the right decision when push comes to shove).
If Dazai directly involves himself in Atsushi’s business, the approach he takes is the opposite of what he did with Akutagawa. Dazai acts in the background, he orchestrates and moves the pieces, he still manipulates the situation, but he will let Atsushi come to his own conclusions. Dead Apple and the Portrait of a Father manga chapter 39 come to mind.
Does Atsushi regard Dazai as his mentor or his teacher in his POV? I don’t remember if he does in the anime or the manga. Fresh out of the orphanage, Atsushi doesn’t know much about the world, so everyone is his mentor in that sense.
I like Portrait of a Father for several reasons:
Akutagawa does recognize Dazai as his mentor. He feels deep respect for him. For Akutagawa, Dazai was the demon who gave him meaning, whereas for Atsushi, Dazai is the god who showed him benevolence. And this sounds like something I’d put in a damn fanfic. Akutagawa said:
Tumblr media
Yeah, I take this literally because he's not wrong. For better or worse, despite the abuse, that's what the headmaster was.
Tumblr media
What Dazai says later on at the park gives an insight into Atsushi's psychology and behavior. Dazai is not justifying anything. He explains cause and effect.
Tumblr media
This is what Atsushi learned. The headmaster taught him to cling to life and survival using the most barbaric, twisted methods. (Hate me, but don't hate yourself, said the headmaster to Atsushi, then proceeds to torture and this is Itachi all over again, fucking hell.) I can’t ignore in early BSD (as a filthy, filthy shipper) how Dazai goes above and beyond for Atsushi. Of course, the example people will remember the most is Dazai going back to the Mafia for info on Atsushi’s bounty. But what I like to think about more often is in this chapter. Dazai organized everything, followed Atsushi around, had Akutagawa give him the file, and consulted with Ranpo previously.
This is Dazai. An amoral dude, an ex-mafia man, carrying the will of his dead BFF. He doesn’t need to do everything he does in this chapter. Atsushi is already in Dazai's sphere of influence at this moment in time. Atsushi's loyalty lies with the ADA. Yet, everything Dazai does is for Atsushi’s benefit and sense of closure. Dazai schemes so that Atsushi follows a trail of his own and discovers information about the headmaster with the help of Tanizaki and Akutagawa.
Because when things need to get done, Dazai gives his 200%, this guy is insane with the plotting he does. Kunikida might say he's a lazy ass, but get Dazai something to do and he's a damn overachiever.
He didn't need to approach Atsushi at the end of the chapter. I've seen posts misunderstanding what Dazai says here. It's about intention. Dazai defaults to logic and analysis, he disentangles Atsushi's situation and past, trying to provide some clarity and solace in the only way he knows, and he does it like a friend would. Like Odasaku might have had. Dazai doesn't seem like a guy who'd bother comforting people or know how to, but he tries here. Dazai makes the effort because he understands loss. The guy is capable of empathy but he's awkward about it. He'd rather keep quiet like he did in the DOA chapter when Gogol picks up Fyodor's arm. Dazai makes a connection of understanding with Atsushi since Chapter/Episode One.
Tumblr media
Dazai talks from experience. He went through the transformative experience of grief himself. It's interesting how much thought and effort Dazai put into smoothing over this situation. Very interesting.
People bring up power imbalance and mentorship all the time with Dzat. There might be on paper, but Dazai never cared about hierarchy.
Tumblr media
The actual dynamic between Dazai and Atsushi is a sort of give-and-take that goes beyond mentorship and hierarchy.
In the Guild Arc, Atsushi tells Dazai, "We should make an alliance with the Port Mafia, trust me bro ✌," Dazai goes ahead and makes it happen, despite his resentful misgivings. Adding this screencap because I fucking love it. He bitches at Mori so passive-aggressively. What a terrifying smile.
Tumblr media
The things Dazai does for a pretty boy he just met. In Dead Apple's graveyard scene, Atsushi says with cutting perception, "Was it a person you liked/were in love with?" Japanese to Eng is a nightmare. In the movie he doesn't specify gender, I think. And Dazai deflects with, "If it had been a woman I loved, I would've died with her. He was a friend." (Though you can be in love in a platonic way, this guy stinks of so much closeted gay-performative straight to me, I can't be the only one. It's like he wants to convince the world he likes women. Stupid headcanons.) Surprisingly, Dazai opens up here. Was that the first time he spoke about Odasaku with someone? The park scene in Portrait of a Father and DA's graveyard scene mirrors each other.
Tumblr media
They both share the most vital pieces of themselves with each other.
Tumblr media
By the end of DA, it doesn't escape me how Atsushi effortlessly rephrases Odasaku's words (with Dazai in the background because Dazai wouldn't be able to handle Atsushi looking at him like this, he'll have a sexuality crisis and go into a sexuality identity coma).
Tumblr media
Most importantly, Dazai tries to explain his actions to Atsushi. Dazai finds Atsushi to explain himself. He doesn't have to do that as a superior. He doesn't owe explanations to a subordinate. Once again, it's about intention. Labels are trivial. As a result, what Dazai gets from Atsushi is reassurance and trust.
This is what Atsushi gets from Dazai in return (even when Atsushi hallucinates him, rip Atsushi's head). I remember that these guys met each other a few months ago and I have to sit down. Despite the trauma both have gone through, they're young. They don't know what to do with themselves. They are learning from each other, they are learning together. I think the point of this was...these two don't fit into the neat trope boxes we're used to. It is another reason why I like them instead of the other alternatives.

Maternity leave has given Yosano more free time than she's used to - a silly chuuaki brainworm I decided to bring to life because I'm weak for domestic cuteness 😌 Extra under the cut!

And then they fell asleep like this after Chuuya was done showering 💞

Here's yet another BSD OC I've been meaning to introduce since last year but alas, free time grows ever so scarce. She's inspired by Haruko Enomoto - mostly notably known as Haruko Kunikida, Doppo Kunikida's second wife and novelist!
Her ability is a reference to one of Haruko's works, True Heart. More info under the Read More break~
Kanji: 榎本治子 Rōmaji: Enomoto Haruko
Personal Information Gender: Female Age: 24 Birthday: August 7th Height: 162cm Blood type: O Likes: Flower arranging, drinking at kyabakura, fish tempura Dislikes: Unplanned events, improper use of the law, condescension
Professional Information Occupation: Private Investigator Affiliation: Yokohama Police Department
Voice Actors Japanese: Mamiko Noto
Ability
True Heart (真ごころ, Magokoro) reveals the truth in an affected person's words as well as their connections to other parties, be those personal, professional and/or criminal.
When activated, Haruko's ability will allow her to see the affected person's words as bright blue visual writing in front of her eyes, much similar to a projection. Anything colored in red, no matter how small it is of a detail, is 100% a lie, even if the remaining of the sentence is colored normally.
If she chooses to further investigate the person in question by 'searching their heart', her ability will show her their involvement with other people through projected lines that connect one to another; the color of the connecting line is indicative of what kind of relationship it is. As much as it intrudes on people's privacy, showing even personal relationships no matter how much of a secret those are, this has been a key trait of Haruko's ability that has aided her on solving many cases before in which multiple criminal parties were allied to each other.
When in use, True Heart will turn Haruko's eyes a brighter blue with scarlet-colored pupils and irises ends. There are no exceptions to the effect of Haruko's ability other than herself and Osamu Dazai.
Personality
Haruko is a down-to-earth, level-headed woman. Her usual composure when at work usually tricks others into thinking she's the stern type but once she's off her shift and breaks character, her joyful and good-humored personality shines through. She eases up the most while drinking at her favorite kyabakura, especially if in the company of a drinking buddy, becoming chatty and endearingly silly.
Extremely adaptable, despite her overall considerate and caring nature, she's not one to be lenient with the unjust and will seek to punish those accordingly.
She carries a stationery store-bought small notebook on her at all times whose notable features are its flower-print cover embellished with the word 理想 (Risou, Ideal) in golden letters. In a similar fashion to Kunikida, Haruko is into scheduling and planned routines albeit hers are much more flexible than his. That didn't stop them from hitting it off as soon as they met however, quickly bonding over their shared interest. Now and then she changes notebooks once they run out of pages to write in, but the flower-print cover and golden writing are always a must-have for her.
As a police department employee, she's proficient with handling firearms and has remarkable physical combat skills, being well-versed in mixed martial art styles such as taekwondo and kickboxing. Her strongest traits are her endurance and willpower.
Backstory
In the original story's timeline, Haruko is first introduced rather early on but becomes more relevant as a character during the events of the Sky Casino arc. She works as a private investigator under her senior officer, Minoura, as he's the only one who knows about her ability and keeps it a secret since the use of those without a permit is considered taboo. Given that the information she finds thanks to her ability always leads her to uncovering actual, relevant clues and evidences in the cases she has solved, no one has ever suspected a thing.
However, it was exactly because of her ability that she was one of the few people that doubted the truth imposed by The Book when reality was altered to frame the ADA as a terrorist group, to the point of questioning her own judgment when no one else did. This state of unrest led her to conducting an investigation on her own, trying to find loose ends whilst staying out of the police's sights in order not to be accused of coniving with the ADA. After all, she believed in their innocence thanks to their previous collaborations with the Police Department, having personally met and inspected most of its members with her ability.
She's finally able of making a breakthrough once Ranpo shows himself on broadcast; while that geared the people affected by The Book to think for themselves and see the situation more clearly, that allowed Haruko to use her ability on Ranpo and not only confirm everything he said was true, but also gave her some leads to follow, cueing her into investigating the Decay of Angels more closely. She's come very close to finding out Kamui's real identity thanks to that.
Currently, she's helping the Police Department deal with the aftermath of the vampire outbreak.
Trivia
🌸 Similar to her irl counterpart, Haruko comes from a financially poor background. When younger, she lived in a humble village and made a living off flower arranging lectures, only moving in to the city after getting her job in the Police Department to support herself. Nowadays, flower arranging is one of her favorite hobbies as it gives her a warm feeling of nostalgia. 🌸 She can hold her alcohol pretty well but if she drinks to the point of becoming too drunk, she'll start crying over pointless things (like how one time she saw a mother goose with its young trailing after and thought it was very cute, for example). 🌸 Despite Haruko's dainty appearance, she's physically stronger than she looks. Rumor has it that she's able of effortlessly lifting Kunikida off the ground regardless of him being comically much taller than her. When asked, he neither confirms nor denies the claim. 🌸 As expected of someone in an investigative career, she's clever, with a good sense of responsibility and a keen intuition when it comes to predicting outcomes in the cases handed to her. Such adeptness paired with her ability make Haruko an obnoxious foe to face head on. 🌸 Even if the concept of ideals draws her in, she mostly relies on a very personal, strong sense of loyalty and duty rather than idealized courses of action. 🌸 Much like Kunikida, she does have a 'requirements list' for an ideal partner and even with her list not being as extensive as his, he still does not fit all requirements. That didn't stop them from falling in love anyway, as she does not fit all of his requirements either - being 4 short of being a perfect match to the list.

I don't know if you've answered this before but what do you predict will be the ending for DGrayman? I think we all think that Kanda (my boy's got literal death flags everywhere) and Allen will die, but what about everyone else? How will the world be saved?
I really apologize for taking so long to get to this ask, but I've been actually thinking the matter over and over. My answer is probably a little off the chart regarding to the actual question, but this is all I can muster with the current information we have (up to chapter 250). This will be a tad long but I'll try to keep it brief.
But the thing is: it's impossible for me to make a prediction. The beauty in Hoshino's writing is that, while she scatters little details for us to catch and plants seeds very early on, helping us find out certain reveals ahead of time (Allen being the 14th's host, Mana being the Earl; there were very early signs for things like these, things of the sort), knowing such information still isn't enough to give us a definite outline of how the story itself will play out.
That's masterfully done writing right there, and I admire her so because of it; not many shounen/seinen mangaka nowadays can pull this off with the same grace as she does.
Back to your question, much like the majority of the fandom, I believe Kanda will die at the end and there are two reasons for that: one is that it's been hinted at (we could even call it foreshadowing) since Kanda claims he wouldn't be able to die in peace without returning the favor to Allen - not to say he means anything other than "one day I'll die and then I'd take this regret with me to the grave", but we can only get the feeling he has dwelled on the thought (and also possibility) of dying, sooner than expected, especially with the weakened state of his seal.
The other reason is that this would be the most gratifying ending for Kanda, as he would be able to reunite with Alma. He lived his entire life searching for that person and longing to reunite, so that would be the most logical route to take - as well as the best, happiest ending possible for Kanda. After all the horrors the Seconds went through, they both deserve eternal peace.
As for Allen... call me crazy, but I believe there is a chance, albeit slim, that he makes it out alive. I'll need to bring up some things from Chapter 250 to be able to elaborate on this, so here's your warning not to click the Read More if you're avoiding spoilers.
One thing I've observed is that Hoshino plays a lot on word meanings (which unfortunately translation can't convey efficiently) as well as red herrings. Ever since we found out Allen's the 14th's host, he's been considered doomed to get erased so we're playing a clock-ticking game, waiting until that happens.
So it seems that there are only two possibilities: that Allen either gets erased by Nea, or that he dies, sacrificing himself for everyone's sake in the ensuing battle against the Earl that is possibly bound to happen. I can easily picture Allen doing the latter, but the latest chapters gave us something else to consider: Apocryphos' meddling.
We still don't know the full details as to why, but Allen is both deemed as an angel as well as a lamb of sacrifice to the Heart. Something makes me think Apocryphos might be trying to 'craft' the perfect host for the Heart by making use of Allen.
It just aligns with everything we know about Apocryphos as an entity: for someone that is a sentient Innocence whose existence gravitates around the sole purpose of protecting the Heart, why is it so obsessed with a specific accommodator, to the point it even quite literally turned Allen into a blank slate (Nea has confirmed so)?
I'm led to believe Allen is not the Heart, that would be far too easy and predictable. But that's not to say he can't become the Heart. We don't know if the Heart is sentient (all Innocence seem to have sentience to an extent regardless) or if it has an accommodator, and if there is one, if this person isn't out there waiting for the perfect candidate to pass the Heart on to.
This is all just speculation, of course. But it's something that's been on my mind for a while, as I've tried to understand Apocryphos' end goal.
And in the end, if Allen and Nea have become allies due to their shared goal (ending the war and saving Mana), that could also mean that they both die together, as that would be the reunion of Mana and Nea as one, as well as the reunion of Allen with the Mana he so loved.
But then comes in another valuable variable that is Link. It's highly likely that he might sacrifice himself and bring Allen back if he falls, but because of how Atuuda works, that would mean exchanging his own life for Allen's.
There are just a lot of things that could go either way, and that's how Hoshino is so good at keeping us guessing. I often say that I find theorizing anything that goes too far into the future of DGM to be pointless because of how sharply a new, unseen reveal might shift the current scenario.
The latest chapter is building up the expectation that Allen will meet his end soon, especially since the Zoogle Bookstore entered the picture. And that is exactly what's keeping me from being able to predict anything worthy of note; because what they unravel there will very likely be a major game changer not only to Allen but to all involved - which means, by extension, everyone involved in the Holy War.
Another thing keeping me from theorizing anything more solid is Lavi. As a Bookman, he's a witness to history itself, and his whereabouts/status are extremely relevant to map out an end game. The most popular theory is that he's the one telling Allen's story, as it seems the D. in the title refers to "Dear Gray Man".
I can, however, also see Allen as the potential narrator of this story. As for whomst this Gray Man is, only time will tell.
I could go on and on with this, and not get anywhere near what'll truly happen. It's difficult to reach a conclusion in what will happen at the very end for the aforementioned reasons, but if there's one thing I can say, is that this current universe's loop will be the one to end the Holy War, so the Black Order and the Clan of Noah should cease existing as organizations.
Innocence would very likely cease existing as well, having fulfilled its purpose, so all accommodators would be freed. With the end of the war, also comes peace for the Memory of Noah, freeing its hosts from the millenia-old anguish that bound them to a perpetually-destroying world. That would leave the remaining survivors free to do as they please with their lives, away from the war, at last.
First and foremost, DGM is a story about love and hope, even in the darkest of times, and most fans can resonate with such - it's not rare to hear from a fan how this series has helped them hang on when things were looking rather dim in their personal lives. DGM's story is a tragedy, but a beautiful, bittersweet one, just like real life. Thus while I don't see it having a perfect, neatly sanitized ending, I don't see it having a kind of overly dramatic 'everyone dies and the planet explodes' kind of ending either. It would go against everything Hoshino has built all along, after all.
I apologize if, in the end, this wasn't the kind of answer you were hoping for, especially with how long it got - and I did keep it brief, really! But thanks to you and whoever may be reading until here. ❤️

I think very often about what kind of father Chuuya would be and with how considerate he was with Akutagawa in the drama CD, it's safe to say he's great at taking care of others 😌
I'm also very weak for this one particular kind of setting, of a parent taking a nap with their child, so I decided to be self-indulgent. It's the cutest thing ever 🥺
If anyone's interested, there's more info on Fumiya here!

Okay so thank you for your response<3 As for elaboration, I meant I want to redraw one of your pictures. It doesn't have to be a perfect picture, maybe even a silly one. And I'm going to replace you with Dazai and him with Atsushi, in that pose? If it makes sense and it's okay!
Thank you for explaining! We do understand what you meant now though unfortunately I believe sourcing you with a picture to draw won't be possible 💦
That's because we tend to take pictures of objects, animals and food the most instead of ourselves. And whenever we do, these only range between two genres: the ones we take in public, where we pretty much just exist side by side in the most boring way, and the ones we take at home, which are more spontaneous but we're usually in PJs and stuff like that.
We don't post the ones we take while home online because they feel too personal, and the others that we do post are simply too uninteresting since they're so unoriginal 😅
But we really appreciate the thought all the same! ❤️

My spouse and I decided to go on a date on a whim to grab lunch at our currently favorite spot, so we took our nendos out as well on a date of their own 💞
The view up there is very pretty - we need to take a chairlift ride to reach the stop point where the restaurant is located - and the food is delicious 😌

Hi there. So don't mind me, I was going through your dazatsu art a while ago (both you and your husband I think?) and also saw some of the captions. You said you two met when you were cosplaying dazatsu? I don't mean to sound stalkerish so please feel free to ignore me, but that is about the sweetest thing I have ever heard😭❤️ I would like to draw one of your cosplays as our favorite couple. You could send me a picture you like- paint over your faces if you don't feel comfortable or-
And again and I emphasize, feel free to straight up reject this or ignore it, because I know it's odd. Just wanted you to know how you warm my heart, and I love your artwork as well<3
Have a nice day or night
Hello there! First of all, don't worry about "sounding stalkerish", it's very sweet of you to drop by just to let me (and by extension, us) know about your thoughts! 😊 The thing is, it's not that we met when we were cosplaying; perhaps me saying we weren't a couple yet gave that impression, but since you asked, I might as well tell you the full story?
You may want to sit, it's a little long (though I'll do my best to be brief) 😅
We already knew each other, we had been acquaintances for a long while, actually! We met when we were 14/13 or so (we're 31/29 now, I'm the older one). We weren't really that close, but we were on friendly terms and all that.
I'll skip the very personal bits which includes (but is not limited to) us getting closer to each other and stupidly pining mutually, but the sequence of events that led to it is one (!) of the reasons why I tend to say we're a "dazatsucore" couple. Because:
He was into me > I noticed on the spot, and did nothing > I was into him > he didn't know because I hid the fact > leads to him blurting out a confession thinking he'd be turned down > I do not turn him down but ask for some time to think things through because I want to be sure of my feelings first > not too long after I have an answer.
By the way, everything I'm saying gets even better (and funnier) when you consider I'm the "Dazai" one, while he's the "Atsushi" in this.
Anyways, about the cosplay shenanigans you inquired about; back when we were getting closer to each other (2016ish), I had become interested in BSD but knew nothing about it; I knew he had watched it, asked what were his thoughts on it, he said it was nice, recommended it, etc. He then commented that he planned to cosplay Atsushi, showed me the character and shared his cosplay plans.
I had only watched the opening so far (the thing that led me to ask him if the anime was good), and Dazai was the one who had caught my eye the most, so I said, very offhandedly, that 'hey, I'd be down to go with you to the con, I do entertain the idea of cosplaying Dazai'.
He was like 'woah, really?! That would be so fun!' but also got extremely nervous on the spot. I obviously noticed. You see, my spouse isn't really the type of person who can hide his feelings very well + I'm good at reading through people. We've always been a funny match in that regard, ngl.
From a quick Google search I did to gather references for the outfit, I could tell the two characters were a somewhat popular pairing, so I made 2+2, I also already knew he had a crush on me and just did nothing about it, like I explained above. So he had gotten nervous that people could mistake us for a couple because the two characters are (were? sadly) a popular pairing.
Which I did know... And again, did nothing about because while my suggestion to cosplay together was sincere, having no intentions of manipulating him or anything, that did work in my favor as well so two birds, one stone.
In the meantime, what I told you above happened and we started dating. And, for obvious reasons, we decided to go ahead with the cosplay plans 😌 I've never posted a clear picture showing our faces because we're not the best photographers out there, but here's one of the least terrible ones:
Tumblr media
The icing on the cake, that doesn't have much to do with us, but is still something we remember about fondly: we're Brazilian, and Brazil is a very big country. The anime con we were going to attend was the biggest in our country but also some good hours away (a 9 hour travel away to the capital, to be more precise), so we took a bus ride with some people headed there as well. It's common for people to make these "con attendees" group rides and they're always really fun experiences + very cost efficient.
One of the people we befriended on the ride was this girl who, coincidentally, was cosplaying as Chuuya. Since we're a queer couple (nb sapphics who go by he/him pronouns) we didn't know what amount of gay was okay in public, but this one girl knew we were a couple, 100% sure of it and it was genuinely beyond funny seeing her and her friends waiting on us to just do something, anything, that gave the answer away.
We kissed like... once, when they were nearby, and the reactions were priceless, ngl. The euphoric I KNEW IT faces.
Back then we weren't married yet, so no telling rings or anything, but this Chuuya had gotten the vibes somehow. When I asked her how she knew before we even did anything, she said, just like this: 'it's the way you look at each other 🥺'.
I need you to imagine Chuuya Nakahara saying this, with this expression. Makes it all 20x funnier. Also the reason why I usually write him as a wingman/enabler in my fics.
Oh, and about the "he had no idea I knew all along", I did tell him... last year 😂 We were reminiscing about things and he went on a tangent saying something along the lines of 'I feel kinda bad because it was selfish of me but I liked the idea of us being seen as a couple back then so I didn't tell you the characters were a popular ship'.
To which I replied: 'Oh, I knew, don't worry.'
Cue shocked Pikachu meme for my spouse's reaction. I then explained that I was fully aware of everything all along, and he was like 'thank GOD you decided to play along then because I had no idea how to charm anyone' 😂
It feels good to put our silly story out there, I had told this story only to one person in the fandom so far (I won't tag her, but Katsu can confirm we're two dumbasses in love) because I don't usually talk about personal stuff publicly like this unless on a whim but also because, like I said, it's a very long story even with skipped parts.
I hope this was fun to read, at least? 😅
As for what you asked about drawing us, I'll apologize, but neither of us understood exactly what you want to do. If you could elaborate more on it, we'd be grateful and could give a proper response! All in all, thank you for sending the ask, it was really lovely of you to stop by just to say that! 😊

So… I made another lovechild, this time for Chuuaki 💦 The ideas kept coming, and I really liked what I came up with for his ability, so I decided to go ahead with it.
Since I wasn't able to find information on any of Yosano-sensei's children (all 13! of them!), my go-to source of inspiration was Nakahara-sensei's first child, Fumiya Nakahara. His ability is called Singing Cicadas.
Please check under the "Read More" if you're interested in knowing more about the hcs and literary insp I put into this OC, but please be warned that there will be ⚠️ spoilers for the Stormbringer novel at some point & some knowledge about SB is also required to understand what I wrote!
Breaking the news Given they're from rival organizations, Chuuya and Yosano had a somewhat "detached" romantic relationship going on - loyal (and undeniably in love despite trying to shrug it off), but not officially tied to each other. They stayed this way for some years, in this state of "lovers but not really". Both were careful regarding contraceptive methods but it seems Lady Fate had other plans and decided disregard that and land them a lucky roll. Being a doctor, Yosano was quick to catch on to the symptoms but didn't tell Chuuya until she was able to wrap her head around the situation they had just gotten themselves into.
Naturally, Chuuya was surprised, if not a little shocked, to hear the news; he then asked her what she wanted to do, and when Yosano told him she planned to carry the pregnancy to term, he couldn't help but happily sweep her away her feet.
Neither had ever planned to, nor had thought about becoming parents, but it didn't sound so bad… And if it's them, they were sure they could make it work.
Yosano hadn't expected anything but support from Chuuya, but seeing such a positive reaction brought her much relief; she then went on to remark that it was too early to even feel anything, and Chuuya, with both hands on her lower stomach, simply said that 'doesn't matter, it's already in there, right?'
How that affected their relationship There weren't any changes in how they acted toward each other as lovers, but the emotional distance between them grew shorter. In a way, the news strenghtened their already stable bond and the two started seeing each other more often, sometimes calling whenever meeting wasn't possible, albeit always keeping professional and personal matters from mixing up.
On their days off, you could either find them relaxing by spending some quiet time together at Chuuya's apartment, or outside, either doing shopping or on a fun date. They would also attend the antenatal classes together whenever possible.
Chuuya had some concerns regarding his identity as Arahabaki, unsure if that could somehow affect their child and, consequently, Yosano. Thankfully, her pregnancy was not only healthy but also well assisted by a doctor competent in the area of ability-related studies.
Yosano gave birth to a boy in late October, during the Autumn.
Personality Fumiya was a surprisingly calm and easy-to-soothe baby. In contrast to his parents' confident and assertive personalities, he's always been on the quieter, more shy end. Loved being held, as that made him feel safer, and would fall asleep pretty quickly if pressed against either Yosano's or Chuuya's chest, lulled by the sound of heartbeats.
Fumiya is a little spoiled due to overprotection but, as first-time parents, Yosano and Chuuya are both doing their best to raise him in a loving and proper environment. When it comes to looking after their son, their routine also works in their favor, since the Agency is open during the day and the Mafia's busiest hours are during nighttime.
Despite everything, Yosano hasn't (yet?) permanently moved in with Chuuya so there are times she and Fumiya stay at her place instead, whenever he's absent due to being busy with work. They're not your usual traditional family but they're happy and closely knit, and Fumiya cherishes both his parents very much.
As a child, he's started coming out of his shell little by little, encouraged by his parents as well as thanks to the few friends he made at school.
Ability Initially suspected not to even have an ability, it revealed itself when Fumiya was 7 years old.
One day, a bird that had fallen from its nest caught the boy's attention, causing him to call out to his parents for advice on what to do. The two adults shared a hesitant glance, having quickly realized the fall had killed the young, now unresponsive bird.
Before they could even do anything, a nearby cicada cry was heard, having more and more join in as if a chorus. The illusion of several iridescent cicadas rose in front of their eyes, taking flight and fluttering about around their source - Fumiya - before dissipating into thin air. The next thing they knew, there was a chirping bird nested in their son's hands.
Completely clueless that he had just brought back to life a formerly dead being, Fumiya seemed happy to see the bird become responsive again; he then passed out right afterwards, giving his parents the fright of their lives.
"Nothing Will Happen When Spring Comes" Fumiya's ability was dubbed Singing Cicadas (鳴いてゐる蝉, Naite iru Semi), discovered to be an extremely rare revival ability - the remains of Chuuya's original, unnamed enhancing ability (before merging with Arahabaki to create For The Tainted Sorrow) had fused with Thou Shalt Not Die, thus enhancing its healing capabilities to a higher level; Fumiya is able to bring back the dead, but in exchange of some of his own life force.
Such conditions sparked a discussion between the couple regarding what they should do to next; that was a burden too great for such a young child to carry, and as his parents, they were obviously worried about his wellbeing.
Chuuya's intuition was pointing him to the key that could settle the matter, however; if the genetic data Fumiya had inherited from him had played a major role in the origin of his ability, it was also highly probable that there were strings of code present inside of Fumiya as well.
Much to his dismay, that's where they would require Dazai's assistance. Regardless if that theory held up or not, he was the best person (as much Chuuya wouldn't admit it) to come up with something based on that possibility alone.
Be it out of respect for Yosano as his senior or if because he simply felt sympathy towards them because he's also a father, Dazai listened closely. He agreed that the odds were high even if uncertain, and if proven true, the presence of code strings meant that Singing Cicadas was able to be contained within a seal that kept it dormant until its willing activation, just like Corruption was.
He then made a suggestion: have the boy join the Agency. He mentioned it was just a wild guess of his, but with the knowledge he had on Chuuya's ability and former Project Arahabaki, putting Fumiya's ability under the effect of the President's was worth a try.
Chuuya sighed, gaze fixating on Yosano's; he had never gotten into too much detail about his past with her, but he knew from the way she looked at him that it did not bother her - their son was the priority, and that was the only thing mattered to both of them in that moment.
Fumiya was then subjected to a test and passed, turning him into an honorary Agency member.
Literary Background Abusing such a taxing ability could result in Fumiya's precocious death, which is a nod to Nakahara-sensei's son having died very young. The name "Singing Cicadas" is a reference to the poem "Cicadas", a poem he wrote after the passing of his brother and that mentions the Nakahara family's gravesite.
蝉が鳴いてゐる、蝉が鳴いてゐる The cicadas are singing, the cicadas are singing
In the story, the ability was named taking into account the report given by Chuuya and Yosano after witnessing its first activation; a reference to the second line of the poem:
蝉が鳴いてゐるほかになんにもない! Other than cicadas singing, there’s nothing else!
Fumiya does have strings of code inside of him that he inherited from Chuuya so, at a later time, it was observed that Singing Cicadas had indeed been "sealed", and there were alterations present in said code strings. Reverse-deciphering these revealed the incantation necessary to release the ability, which they kept a secret until Fumiya was old enough.
The incantation itself is a line from Nakahara-sensei's poem "Spring Will Come Again", which he wrote after the death of his first son, Fumiya:
春が来たって何になろ あの子が返って来るじゃない Nothing will happen when spring comes That child will not come back
Cicadas are often associated with being a symbol of resurrection, and I thought such imagery would be a perfect paralell to the imagery Yosano's butterflies have as well as the two of them having healing abilities.
Trivia
He takes after Chuuya a lot, so he naturally also inherited his father's tiny person genes. Fumiya won't grow past 163cm tall even after puberty hits.
Fumiya has met Adam Frankenstein when he was 4 years old, when his father and the detective stumbled upon each other by chance during one of the latter's work-related trips to Japan. Running a facial structure analysis scan, Adam amusedly took note of the way the boy's eyes were shaped just like Chuuya's, but the nose and chin resembled his mother's more. "The mix and match characteristics of human offspring are certainly intriguing."
Fumiya did laugh at Adam's signature joke "Look, I'm a pigeon", much to Chuuya's surprise.
Usually calm and gentle, but if provoked, his surprisingly sharp tongue reminds everyone whose son he is. Notoriously hard-working in anything he does. His favorite saying is "my parents didn't raise a quitter".
He's very close to Osamu Dazai's daughter, Yūko, and while Yosano finds it amusing, Chuuya laments how often this requires him to be in Dazai's vicinity.
He has always admired Yosano's kindness and strength as a doctor very much. Her being someone who helps others inspired him and would ultimately lead him to pursue a medical career in the future, as a veterinarian.
Just like Verlaine was able to peer inside Chuuya to fumble with his code strings, Chuuya did the same practice on Fumiya to figure out the release incantation for his ability, albeit in a much gentler way; Fumiya described the sensation as "the warm feeling of holding hands".
Despite being so shy, he has wondrous acting skills and is part of the drama club in school during his junior years.
Has an unexplainable distaste for Japanese Folk Music (it dampens his mood).
As a teenager, he has braces to fix large front teeth.
One of his favorite activities when young was making paper crafts such as origami and collages together with Yosano; Chuuya was invited to join them once and produced a pair of disgruntled papercraft birds. He then stubbornly practiced as he read a How To book until he could master at least 15 different papercraft shapes.
…Yosano and Fumiya put the disgruntled birds Chuuya made on display in the kitchen instead of the newer, perfect ones regardless.
In case you read until here, thank you so much! I wish you a wonderful day, please know that I love you and am sending good things & vibes your way 🫶

Hi, DGM fandom! I'm jeidafei. You may have seen me in Kougeki-scans' scanlation of D.Gray-Man.
I know Kougeki releases have been delayed for these past few chapters. And people have taken to releasing their own translations on Reddit and MangaDex as early as a few days after the Japanese release. We at Kougeki have asked people to wait if they could. People have told us to, basically, go d*e.
And of course, you are perfectly entitled to say so. You are perfectly entitled to release your own translations and not wait. After all, we at Kougeki are just fans of D.Gray-Man, similar to you. We have zero claim over the series.
I normally stay out of the fray when it comes to quarrels with these 'snipers' until now. When I saw the quality of the translations some of these people are putting out.
(Specifically, Chapter 250 on MangaDex)
Japanese is a difficult language. D.Gray-Man is a difficult manga to translate due to its ongoing status, complex nature and plot twists. I have made mistakes myself that others have pointed out. I have my own interpretations that might be different. I readily forgive mistakes I understand are due to the complex Japanese grammar, and the confusing mysteries of the D.Gray characters.
But these are not it. These are just blatant laziness and lack of basic knowledge of even the most recent developments in D.Gray-Man. Or even simple logic. These are the results of people dishing out sub-par work quickly just to get the most exposure possible.
So while we wait for Kougeki's version, I am going to point out these egregious mistakes. We need transparency so that going forward, you can make your own decisions on whether it is speed or accuracy you are looking for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original Japanese text says "7,000 years ago" (七千), not "17 years"(十七). A difference any beginner Japanese learner would notice. Even most D.Gray-Man fans without Japanese knowledge would probably realize something is off based on what we know of the story so far.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original text says "The more the human you reincarnated into resemble Nea, the deeper the passions/sentiments" (the word 'regret' is simply not there). It's more compatible considering earlier theories about Tyki, the Noah of Pleasure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jasdevi is saying they were at their limits anyway and wouldn't be able to keep restraining Apocryphos for long. When Wisely orders them to dispose of Apo, they scream "Oni!" (Demon) which is quite similar to "Onii-san" (Elder brother), but most people would probably know which one is more fitting in this scenario, even without Japanese knowledge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Desires asks Wisely if he is just going to set Apo free like that, Wisely explains that this way, Apocryphos (not Desires or Wisely as in the translation), can keep searching for the Heart for them. Again, basic story knowledge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wisely didn't say "Fine, enough already"; this bubble is a continuation of the earlier bubble, spoken by Desires. Together, he is saying "Wouldn't you just spit it out already!?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Japanese, many words sound the same and the meaning can only be determined by context or the Chinese characters (kanji) used. In this case, "kikai" can mean either "machine" (機械) or "opportunity" (機会) or "strange" (奇怪), among a dozen others.
Yes, it's difficult, I know. But, you see the kanji. You know the context. I'm sure you can take a guess.
There are a couple more minor mistakes (ones that don't impact your understanding of the story too much). But I'm just going to leave you with one more, the most conspicuous mistake:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The chapter is named "Curse's End" by this translator. Actually, it's the opposite in Japanese. "Owaranu" is a form of "Owaranai" which means "not ending", which fits the revelation of this chapter by Wisely that their 35-year curse has yet to come to an end.
So, there you have it.
As you can see, I'm not shaming people for not being as fluent in Japanese. Not everyone can dedicate almost two decades to learn a language. As I have pointed out, most of these mistakes are rookie-level, and should have been picked up in double-check if that someone is familiar with D. Gray-Man at all. With these nigh unforgivable mistakes, even Deepl and Google Translate are more accurate.
This is a matter of someone not giving enough of a sh*t, plain and simple.
I'm also not gatekeeping scanlation whatsoever. I'm just pointing out the mistakes and actual text because the fandom deserves to know. With the localization drama going on, it proves faithfulness to the actual text and accuracy matters.
Of course, anyone has the right to put out their translation. And I have the right to point out whether they can be trusted. I'm not passing judgment. I'm just providing evidence so the bystanders can decide for themselves.
Lastly, from the bottom of my heart, I thank everyone who has supported the work of Kougeki Scans and waited for our release. I apologize for the delays. We're working on the latest chapter and will release 249 and 250 very, very soon.
