Victory (At Last)

This fic can also be found on Ao3 here!
For a couple weeks now, Kieran’s been returning from his visits to the alienage all dusty and roughed up, but he always managed to sneak in and clean up in the store-room before anyone noticed. This time, however, he’s still applying an elfroot salve to his bruised ribs when a shadow darkens the door.
He looks up and sees Alistair studying him in concern.
“You needn’t worry,” Kieran says, quickly, reaching for a fresh shirt to tug on. “Nothing’s broken, only…”
“Who did this to you?” Alistair asks, frowning at the way Kieran winces when his hands brush his side while he’s tucking in his shirt. “Do you need any help...?”
“No, I’m not in trouble,” Kieran promises. “Minna offered to teach me a few tricks, and… I’ll learn nothing if I’m always coddled, so I told her not to hold back. It’s not her fault I was no good at any of it. I’ve never… studied this.”
Alistair takes a seat, still frowning — but his eyes have softened a bit. “Learning how to fight is part of being able to defend yourself,” he agrees. “I’m surprised you haven’t…”
“Mother disallowed that sort of training,” Kieran sighs, looking at his feet. “She and Papae taught me a little, but she did not want me to be tutored by templars or chevaliers, which… I understood, but it limited my options in Orlais.”
“I could find you a tutor who is neither of those things,” Alistair offers. “A knight, perhaps? And, also…” he laughs quietly, shaking his head, “I can talk to Dirk and Zevran, let them know you wish to train with Minna? That way, you no longer have to sneak about.”
Kieran feels his cheeks heat up in embarrassment. It feels silly, now, but… he’d never thought this might be allowed.
“I would like that,” he says. “Very much.”
.
A few days later, Alistair leads Kieran down the the wards for the first time, to meet his new combat tutor. “Kieran, this is Ser Bevin of Redcliffe. When I told him about you, he said he’d be absolutely delighted to teach you a few things.”
“Aye,” Bevin says, grinning broadly at Kieran. “You remind me a bit of myself, actually. I got a late start, too, but… as you can see, it all worked out for me.” Kieran nods, and Bevin points out a rack of practice arms nearby.
“Start with a light sword and shield. We’ll take it easy today, lad, I just want to see where you’re at.”
.
The next time he spars Minna, he tries to remember what Ser Bevin taught him: keeps his sword and shield poised and ready to block, waits for an opening to appear. But she’s far too quick, and Kieran finds himself disarmed before he even knows what hit him.
He frowns as he slides backwards, rooting himself, and she grins.
“That’s some fancy footwork,” Minna teases, darting in close. Kieran gasps in surprise as she sweeps out his leg with one smooth flick of her foot. He lands hard on his back, feels the wind rush right out of him, sees stars swirl overhead in the clear blue sky.
He lies there, stunned, for a while. Then Minna leans in over him, holding out her hand, and he lets her help him up as he groans. “Remember to slap your hand against the ground next time you hit it,” Dirk instructs, laughing. “Hurts less, that way.”
“Right,” Kieran sighs, still winded. “Next time.”
.
It’s slow, hard work, but Kieran knows that patience will pay off.
He learns tricks to lure his opponent in, how to dodge and slip aside or stand his ground... and the first time he disarms Bevin with a flick of his hand against his forearm, Bevin’s eyes go wide in surprise.
Kieran grins as he takes a step back and wipes a trickle of sweat from his brow.
Bevin chuckles as he retrieves his weapon. “Not bad,” he concedes, “but it’s not wise to dart in close like that in a real fight unless you become a very skilled rogue. It’s smarter to keep your distance, and… remember to stay agile when you parry.”
“Of course,” Kieran says, but he’s still beaming.
Even a small victory feels good after a long struggle.

Man pardoned by ex-Kentucky gov. convicted of strangulation
COVINGTON, Ky. — A Kentucky man has been convicted of strangulation and domestic violence, three years after he was one of hundreds pardoned during former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin’s last days in office. Joheim Bandy, 20, was found guilty by a jury in Kenton County this week, The Kentucky Enquirer reported. Since his 2019 pardon, Bandy has been charged in three separate strangulation cases, the…

Hi Zalrb! I don’t know if it’s just me but like I don’t get what the oth writers were thinking with the brucas/leyton love triangle? Like brucas were naley’s best man and maid of honour, the ones that were trying to get naley (and even rooting for Karen and Keith) together, they are Jaime’s godparents, Lucas is best friends with almost all the men characters in the gang and Brooke is best friends with all the female characters in the gang for example Mouth and Millie, Peyton and Jake, Skills and Bevin, Naley. Brooke is so close to his family (Karen, Keith, Naley, Jaime, the river court guys). It’s like they were written as meant to be! I think since I am used to watching a lot of asian/south asian movies and shows where two characters that helps another couple get together ends up also getting together or like the girl that is close to the family of the guy, usually ends up with him. I thought it weird that they weren’t endgame and weird that they didn’t make Peyton (the one who ends up with Lucas) all those things (maid of honour for Haley and godmother to Jaime, etc.). Like I don’t think Peyton and Jaime even had a scene together? She is “supposed” to be his aunt.
It's definitely not just you, the Brucas/Leyton triangle has been a topic of discussion since it aired and it's definitely been a topic of discussion on my blog.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The husband of U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi pleaded not guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges related to a May car crash in Northern California wine country.
Paul Pelosi, 82, did not appear in person at Napa County Superior Court Wednesday. His attorney Amanda Bevins entered not guilty pleas for him on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and driving with a .08% blood alcohol level or higher causing injury.
State law allows for DUI misdemeanor defendants to appear through their attorney unless ordered otherwise by the court.
He was arrested following a May 28 crash in Napa County, north of San Francisco, after a DUI test showed he had a blood alcohol content level of .082%. The blood sample was taken about two hours after the collision occurred at 10:17 p.m., the Napa County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
Pelosi was driving a 2021 Porsche into an intersection near the wine country town of Yountville that was hit by a 2014 Jeep, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Prosecutors filed the case as a misdemeanor because of the injuries sustained by the 48-year-old driver of the Jeep. They have not described the injuries or provided more information about the other driver, saying the person has requested privacy.
Pelosi was released on $5,000 bail after his arrest.
If convicted, Pelosi faces up to a minimum of five days in jail and up to five years of probation. He would also be required to complete a drinking driver class and install an ignition interlock device in his vehicle — a breathalyzer that requires the driver to blow into it before operating the vehicle, prosecutors said.
Pelosi has been married to the powerful Democratic speaker since 1963. She is traveling in Asia this week.

The White House informed Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear's office in late June -- the day before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade -- that President Joe Biden intended to nominate an anti-abortion Republican as a federal judge in Kentucky, according to emails obtained by CNN on Wednesday through an open records request.
In an email dated June 23, White House aide Kathleen Marshall, who works in its Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, wrote to Coulter Minix in Beshear's office that Chad Meredith was "to be nominated tomorrow" to the US District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky. The subject line of the email read "Close hold," and the body of the correspondence included a summary of Meredith's resume.
Minix responded the same day, writing in part: "appreciate the heads up."
On June 24, the Supreme Court rocked the nation by announcing its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate federal abortion rights. CNN reported this week that White House counsel Dana Remus had assured senior aides that the ruling would not come on that Friday, amid Democrats' growing frustration about perceived lack of urgency from the Biden White House following the Roe decision.
The new email from the White House dated June 23 stating that Biden planned to nominate an anti-abortion Republican to a lifetime appointment judgeship the following day -- the day that the Roe ruling ultimately came out -- appears to further bolster the idea that the White House did not anticipate Roe to be overturned that Friday.
The Courier Journal first reported on the emails between the White House and Beshear's office.
While the White House has not confirmed its intent to select Meredith, the nomination has been described by people with knowledge of the matter as part of a potential deal with US Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the chamber's top Republican.
For Biden, any deal could clear a path for some of the dozens of nominees currently held up in the Senate just months before the midterm elections. As Democrats continue to struggle in polling, White House officials have started to plan for the possibility of Republican takeovers in the House and, potentially, the Senate -- something that would throw a major roadblock in front of any future Biden nominees.
Deals for judicial nominees aren't new -- the realities of the Senate have required them for Biden's predecessors -- and no Republican takes more interest in the federal judiciary than McConnell.
Meredith has ties to McConnell-world beyond just the shared home state. He worked for Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a former McConnell staffer considered a rising star in the Republican Party.
Meredith also clerked for Amul Thapar, a federal appeals court judge who has long had the support of McConnell. McConnell pushed Thapar as a potential Supreme Court nominee during the Trump administration.
In another email dated June 29, also obtained by CNN via an open records request, Marshall wrote to the same aide in Beshear's office: "Coulter -- Sorry for not including this in the original e-mail but I wanted to clarify that the e-mail I sent was pre-decisional and privileged information. Please let me know if you have any questions."
Meredith has not yet been nominated.
CNN previously reported on Biden's intention to nominate Meredith to the federal judgeship. Beshear, a Democrat, strongly criticized Biden, saying in a recent news conference: "If the President makes that nomination, it is indefensible."
Meredith, who also previously worked as then-Kentucky Republican Gov. Matt Bevin's deputy counsel, defended a state law that requires doctors performing abortions to first perform an ultrasound and describe the image on the monitor to the patient.
Reports of his potential nomination drew fierce criticism not just from Democrats but also pro-abortion rights organizations.
"Chad Meredith should not be nominated to a lifetime judgeship. This is unacceptable at any time, but especially on the heels of six Supreme Court Justices taking away a fundamental right from millions of people," a group of organizations including Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America said in a joint statement Tuesday.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre received multiple questions at the briefing about reports of Biden's intent to nominate Meredith on Tuesday, and insisted the White House does not comment on any judicial vacancies.
When asked more broadly whether Biden would ever appoint a judge who doesn't support abortion rights to the federal bench, Jean-Pierre said that was a "hypothetical" scenario that she couldn't speak to.
Pressed on whether that would be a litmus test for Biden, Jean-Pierre repeated: "All I can tell you is that we don't normally speak on vacancies that -- where we haven't made a decision yet, whether it's on the judicial level or the executive branch."

Bonds of Family
A story primarily told through correspondence sent and unsent. It's not a style I often use so this is Something New And Fun for me.
First is a letter from Eamon to his brother Teagan about the boy who came home. The mages call it 'nevermore seen again' and Eamon is beginning to understand why it's called that.
Story to feature primarily Eamon, Teagan, Connor, Kaitlyn, and perhaps peripheral characters. Yes, in game you can set it up so 40 year old Teagan marries that sniveling girl from Redcliffe at least 20 years his junior. Give her enough money for her to move to Denerim with Bevin and she invests in a foundry and Teagan courts and marries her of his own volition.
The year is 9:43, one year before the Inquisition is disbanded.

Paul Pelosi allegedly slurred speech, had drug in system and handed over police privilege card during DUI bust
Paul Pelosi, the multimillionaire husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, allegedly had a drug in his system, addressed officers with slurred speech, and tried to hand them a police courtesy card during his May arrest on DUI charges, according to court documents.
Pelosi's 2021 Porsche and the other driver's 2014 Jeep sustained "major collision damage" in a crash around 10:17 p.m. on May 28, and responding officers found Pelosi in his driver’s seat in his damaged car near the intersection of California Route 29 and Oakville Cross Road.
Pelosi allegedly handed officers his driver’s license and an "11-99 Foundation" card when they asked for his ID, according to the documents. The 11-99 Foundation is a California Highway Patrol charity that supports officers and provides scholarships for their children.
Pelosi allegedly exhibited "signs of impairment" during field sobriety tests and officers "observed objective signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication," according to the documents. Those allegedly included "red/watery" eyes.
"He was unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred, and he had a strong odor of an alcohol beverage emanating from his breath," the complaint alleges.
The other driver, identified only as John Doe, was standing outside an SUV, according to the documents. Both of them declined medical treatment at the scene, but Doe on June 2 told Napa County prosecutors that he had begun suffering pain in his upper right arm, right shoulder and neck the day after the crash. He also complained of headaches and said it was difficult to lift things with his right arm, according to the documents. Pelosi allegedly injured the other driver "while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and a drug and under their combined influence," the first count in the two-charge complaint reads. Investigators later determined he had a blood-alcohol content of .082%.
Pelosi’s attorney, Amanda Bevins, told Fox News Digital, "I believe that the drug reference is part of the statutory boilerplate language in the complaint."
