Today, the word ‘berserk’ is used to describe anyone in an irrational, agitated state of mind who cannot or does not control his or her actions.

Sometimes I think he should get Outrage berserker powers, as a treat! Just lay eyes on Giovanni and spontaneously combust into red-blue flames - saves all the hassle of even getting Dragonite out to use Hyper Beam 😌

What Would Have Happened if Stoick Slew Dagur? (Riders of Berk)
Tumblr media
Hello, fellow Furians! Welcome to another HTTYD article! Today, we'll dive into the what-if scenario that could've happened in the Riders of Berk episode "Twinsanity".
In this scene, Stoick was clearly about to end the Berserker Dynasty right then and there, until DreamWorks Hiccup and the Gang came along and interrupted it with their fake "Dragon Raid" forcing the Berserkers to retreat.
Thus, the question is this: What would've happened if he had succeeded or failed in doing so had he NOT been interrupted?
Obviously, of course, there would've been war between Berk and Berserk. Reason for this is that there would be witnesses who'd see Stoick strike Dagur down from behind. There are four Berserk Guards who are with Dagur (as seen below).
Tumblr media
There's a risk of the one who's not encumbered with a task — and is closest in proximity to Dagur — intercepting Stoick's strike. However, when Stoick closes the distance with Dagur, the other guards, along with Dagur himself, are far too preoccupied with Barf and Belch to notice Stoick's actions. So it's possible that Stoick could easily succeed in assassinating Dagur.
However, it's what happens afterward that's important. The guards would've seen Stoick slay their chieftain and will want to exact vengeance. Of course, as we know, the moment Stoick slays Dagur, Hiccup and the Gang come in with their fake dragon raid on the Berserkers. There might be a 5-10% chance that Stoick, depending on the timing and the Berserker's POV, might get away with it if the Berserkers immediately focus from Barf and Belch to the other dragons without noticing Dagur's fall. But I doubt that Dagur would go down without a fight or without making any sound, hence why the percentage is so low.
So we will continue with the assumption that the Berserkers saw Stoick slay their chieftain. Stoick and the others would have to deal with them, or else they'll report this to the armada waiting near Berk's docks.
Of course, if Berk fails to cover their assassination up, they'll immediately have to deal with an entire armada of angry Berserkers. Even if the Berkians are battle-hardened and every person who can hold a weapon is recruited and the dragons join in the fight, and even if the majority of the Berserkers haven't seen many battles or wars, it can't be denied that the Berserkers have been well-trained and are, of course, Berserkers. It'll still be a very difficult fight. There will be severe casualties on both sides. In the end, though, Berk will probably pull through this with a victory in the end. But at what cost? It'd be a conflict that could've been easily avoided, and Berk suffered losses that it can ill afford to take when they're still fighting with the Outcasts — with little gains to show for it. And there's no guarantee that the conflict will even end there.
So, in summary, if Stoick wasn't interrupted and succeeded in ending Dagur, he'll need to get rid of the guards as well. This will be pretty easy since they have the dragons, and they can easily make it look like a dragon raid killed them and hopefully Berk can relax and keep an alliance with Berk, while Berserk is reeling from their chief's death and busy running around killing as many dragons as they can. And — even better — Berk could masquerade this as something that Alvin, an Outcast, did and can better solidify Berserk's involvement in Berk's war against the Outcasts.
So yeah, so long as the Berserkers don't look too closely at the bodies, the Berkians would have a pretty good chance at getting away with it.
What do you guys think? What would've happened had Stoick went with his plan? Do you think that Berk would've been able to get away with it? Or would it end up sinking in defeat, with Alvin taking advantage of the chaos? Tell me your thoughts!
Thank you for reading! I hope you found this article intriguing and I'll see you in the next article.
Long Live the Night!

(Spoilers for RTTE) It frustrated me how there was never a canon explanation for why Dagur sent Heather adrift as kids. I don't think it was done with malicious intent. My reason for this is how much Dagur holds grudges. If he had hated her, then he probably would have continued to hate her up until turning good; however, as soon as he found out who she was, he didn't care that the reason she was even there to begin with was literally to kill him. He just wanted her back in his life. Something I also thought was interesting was how he was shown to be able to love others even before becoming a better person. As a villain, he could've viewed Heather as a pawn or a lackey, but he was extremely protective of her and brought her in on his actual plan for the Grimborns. So, no, I don't think he disliked her as a child. That leads me to thinking it's one of two reasons for why he did what he did.
The first is that it was an accident. I don't think Dagur's much older than Heather, so it could have been an instance of two children being left unsupervised and it not going well. Maybe he thought they would have fun on a little boat and then a big wave separated them. Maybe he assumed that she would enjoy getting some time alone to sail. An important part of this too in my opinion is how Dagur doesn't process things like most Vikings, so it could have made sense to him at the time and actually been very dangerous.
The second option is that he did want to send her away, but it was to protect her. This could have been from raiding Vikings or even their own Berserkers like Ansson. If Dagur knew he wasn't a strong enough fighter at the time to beat the older redhead, maybe he thought sending Heather away would keep her from getting hurt as well. Another option is if there was an illness on Berserker Island. Then, sending her odd could have prevented her from contracting it.
I've played around with a lot of these ideas in different stories, but I can never really settle on one. What do you all think?

I've been reading about berserkers recently. This is just one of many articles I've read. While many aspects of the original legends are largely forgotten in modern pop culture (immunity to fire, wearing animal hides), the archetype of power through anger or insanity is common and it's an archetype I've liked since I was a very young child. Some things I've noticed are that berserkers are often said to wear animal hides, usually that of a bear (origin of their name) or a wolf. Some legends have them even transform into these creatures. I find this interesting as it means berserkers are also werewolves (the term werewolf is used broadly by folklorists for anyone who turns into a wolf, and original legends differ from pop culture). A difference I notice is that berserkers were said to be immune to iron and fire, while certain werewolf like beasts were actually weak to iron since they're fae, and modern werewolves are weak to silver. Another power is that berserkers are mentioned in Beowulf to curse their enemies with blunted weapons through their eyes, an evil eye motif. Something the wikipedia article doesn't get into much detail about is that going berserk leaves the berserker exhausted, and I know from first hand experience from my autistic meltdowns that powerful emotional states can do this.
Transforming into a wolf through fur is also something done by the Navajo skinwalker. Both skinwalkers and berserkers are/were regarded as dangerous by their respective cultures, but while berserkers had a chance to use their powers for good skinwalkers are wholly evil. Skinwalkers are very much thought of as witches which is sometimes shared with berserkers, though I don't know if they were thought to curse people with their gaze. I think skinwalkers have a weakness to fire in contrast to the berserker's immunity.
I also notice a connection to the Aztec god Xolotl. Xolotl guided the dead to the afterlife, presided over fire, lightning and monstrosities; was a dog, was missing his eyes, and was a master shapeshifter. Xolotl, being a transforming canine, meshes quite well with werewolf berserkers and being called the lord of fire would also be resistant. I'm not sure how Xolotl would connect with the evil eye, as while Xolotl was notably eyeless and sometimes known as a god of misfortune I don't know if the evil eye was something the Aztecs believed. Some of the illustrations of Xolotl's missing eyes in the codexes show them as blue in color, blue eyes also being associated with the evil eye in the middle-east, and incidentally they are my eye color.
I also know that the aztecs believed that certain gifted individuals could transform into jaguars, and they had an elite class of jaguar warriors, though I don't know if the jaguar warriors were thought to have unnatural abilities.

For Medieval Europeans few things could have been more terrifying than seeing a Viking longship on the horizon. Vikings raids were rapid, brutal, and totally without mercy, as this video reveals.

Vorg's Commentary by Noctus Fury
After watching "A View to a Skrill" in Defenders of Berk, and saw this scene, I knew I HAD to make an edit! 😆
Watching Vorg's expressions as he tries to avoid getting hit by Dagur's exaggerated body movements is so entertaining and hilarious to watch. And what's even funnier is that I truly do suspect that Dagur was doing that intentionally! He's a sadist, after all. lol 🤣
I'm sure you guys noticed some references here and there from pop culture. 😉
This was very fun and I enjoyed making these! I hope you got as much of a kick outta them as I did. 🥰
Love you all, and hope you have a splendid week!
