Glacier Highway, BC (No. 11)

The top 50 m (160 ft) of a glacier are rigid because they are under low pressure. This upper section is known as the fracture zone and moves mostly as a single unit over the plastic-flowing lower section. When a glacier moves through irregular terrain, cracks called crevasses develop in the fracture zone. Crevasses form because of differences in glacier velocity. If two rigid sections of a glacier move at different speeds or directions, shear forces cause them to break apart, opening a crevasse. Crevasses are seldom more than 46 m (150 ft) deep but, in some cases, can be at least 300 m (1,000 ft) deep. Beneath this point, the plasticity of the ice prevents the formation of cracks. Intersecting crevasses can create isolated peaks in the ice, called seracs.

Crevasses can form in several different ways. Transverse crevasses are transverse to flow and form where steeper slopes cause a glacier to accelerate. Longitudinal crevasses form semi-parallel to flow where a glacier expands laterally. Marginal crevasses form near the edge of the glacier, caused by the reduction in speed caused by friction of the valley walls. Marginal crevasses are largely transverse to flow. Moving glacier ice can sometimes separate from the stagnant ice above, forming a bergschrund. Bergschrunds resemble crevasses but are singular features at a glacier's margins. Crevasses make travel over glaciers hazardous, especially when they are hidden by fragile snow bridges.

Below the equilibrium line, glacial meltwater is concentrated in stream channels. Meltwater can pool in proglacial lakes on top of a glacier or descend into the depths of a glacier via moulins. Streams within or beneath a glacier flow in englacial or sub-glacial tunnels. These tunnels sometimes reemerge at the glacier's surface.

I intend to cross quickly, but for reasons I cannot explain I pause on the bridge. I look down into the depths of the bergschrund to the right, and feel a bloom of fear in my chest, like a drop of ink spreading in water. Below the snow bridge the sides of the bergschrund fall like a blue gorge, more than 150 feet deep, big enough to eat a truck and its trailer, its upper cliff overhanging, its true depth lost in shadow. ‘Keep moving, Rob,’ calls Helen from behind me, urgently. ‘That’s no place to stop.’ I realize I have stopped, have been stopped by the void and the glimpse into the depths that it gives or demands.

Ama Dablam Climbing Routes

Ama Dablam Route

Standing 6,810m high, Ama Dablam is a prominent peak located in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal and is also dubbed as “Matterhorn of Himalayas” for its alike sore ridge. Famous for its thrilling ascent and breathtaking beauty among keen climbers, Ama Dablam remains invincible. The steep and abrupt surfaces of Ama Dablam climbing routes requires high technical climbing; therefore, ascending Ama Dablam has always been challenging.

The Matterhorn of Himalayas was given a name after its appearance. The long ridges on both sides look like spread arms of a mother(ama), and the glacier hanging on the southwest face of the mountain bears a resemblance to sacred jewelry worn around the neck by sherpas women called Dablam, eventually naming it as Ama Dablam. When translated into English, it means Mother’s Necklace.

Ama Dablam Climbing Routes

First ascended in 1961, Ama Dablam is one of the famous expeditions in Nepal, in fact, the third most popular peak for expedition. Every year hundreds of Alpinists come to conquer the peak. Different routes have been opened for ascending the peak. However, South-west ridge is prominent among others, the same route was used while conquering the Ama Dablam for the first time in 1961 by a group of mountaineers led by Sir Edmund Hillary. Even so, North Ridge Route, Northwest route are also attempted by alpinists. Still, no successful endeavor has been recorded from these routes, after the successful endeavor in 1979 from North Ridge Route.

Climbing Ama Dablam Easiest Route

South-West Ridge route is taken as the safest and possible route to the top of the peak to date. So, all the expeditions to the top are made via southwest Ridge. Before making it to the top, climbers set up three camps at different elevations above the Ama Dablam base camp(4,570m). The climb till Camp 1 is modest. However, when we gradually gain elevation, the vertical surfaces start showing up, making our ascending tougher.

The Climb from Camp 2 to the summit is not easy at all. In fact, the whole expedition is arduous. Not Everyone can scale the peak of Ama Dablam. Before reaching the summit from Camp 2, one more camp is set, Camp 3. The climb from Camp 3 to the submit gets more technical as the climbers have to cross snowy arête, bergschrund, and ice cliffs before reaching to the top.

Ama Dablam Camp 2

Ama Dablam boasts a beautiful campsite that sits at the elevation of 5900m above sea level, where expeditioners set camps which is titled as Ama Dablam Camp 2. The campsite is considered as one of the best places for camping in the world. The campsite has a meager rugged surface area on the top of a mountain that barely accommodates 5-6 tents.

The steep rocks and chunks of ice encountered on the way to Camp 2 is very difficult to overcome; ergo precipitous activities can also lead to tragedy. Nevertheless, the majestic Vistas of everest , Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and more seen from the Camp 2 are worth it.

But it’s time to turn the tables. Have you ever climbed Mount Rainier?

What made the difference for you? Was it all the physical training that you put in making sure your body could take you to 14,410 feet above sea level? Was it the team you were with and how well you worked together? Maybe having all the skills down cold and using the right equipment? Or did reading the weather correctly make or break your attempt?

Last time I had to walk down the Grandes Jorasses together with @fredsouchon , I promised myself I would never do it again and will only climb this face with the Paragliders. The descent is not only long and painful, it is also quite exposed with massive seracs above the head and steep snow slopes with on some part some crevasses chaos. I totally forgot that promise when @juliavirat asked me if I would be keen on climbing the Cassin route on the Walker. I knew the route was in good conditions. That I would not be freezing in a North Face because there was still the heat wave. And I had been away from the mountains doing other interesting things and was craving for them. We got ready for that big day on this big face and headed to the Leschaux hut. Chloe, one of my friend and the Leschaux gardian hut showed us the main sections thru the binoculars. There was already quite a few parties on the route. Some more parties were hiking up the glacier in order to start the route that same day. And we learnt we were 6 parties in total to go for the route. Julia and I knew that was a lot and hoped it would be manageable. On the next morning (a few hours later I should say) 5 of the 6 parties reached the bergschrund. As we were here getting ready to climb a first drop of stones came on us. The leader of the swiss party on our left got hit in the face. No broken nose but a bad cut of the skin and lots of bleeding. On our right an Austrian mountain guide got hit in the leg. They also decided to turn around. We waited a bit… and since there was no other rock fall, I started the first « pitch » with shaky legs, feeling better steps after steps. Julia joined me on top of a pinacle and we swap with Julia taking the lead. There again some big stones just missed Julia by a few centimetres. We stayed under a big piece of rock as a shelter, waited for the party above us to finish their traverse that was causing the rock falls and started to debate about keep going or turning back. We decided to keep going. As we got underneath the Rebuffat Dihedral we took some other rock falls. DJ Shadow has unveiled a new visual for his Nils Frahm-assisted single “Bergschrund.” “Bergschrund” was directed by Matt Devine and stars Matthew Sunderland as an unsuspecting target of otherworldly activity. The track comes from DJ Shadow’s latest record, ‘The Mountain Will Fall,’ which was released earlier this year on Mass Appeal Records. Says director Matt Devine: "To me the track has a really cinematic and also science fiction tone to it. I wanted to make a film that really worked with this visually but also had a humor to it. It is also my favorite track from the album so I was honored to be asked to make something for it." Says DJ Shadow: "Nils Frahm is an insanely smart composer. He created a sinewy, gated vintage synth line which I then expanded upon, hopefully to complimentary effect. Bergschrund is an obscure German word for a particular type of crevasse, or ice cliff, usually found on mountains at very high elevations."

Downward Spiral can represent her on maybe one of her bad episodes and Sick Sick Sick can be the danger around her. Kids See Ghosts is a whole album about and made by people that are bipolar and have depression, so naturally, a song should fit there. Also, it has the chorus Kids See Ghosts which can mean false visions or how one can cope as a child. Everything She Does is Magic could capture that, despite how initially unintimidating she is, there is something unnerving when you pay attention. Knife Party is there because she has a knife.

I wanted tracks that would get the feeling of going through a desert on your own, with no one else but people you are wary of. Where This Flower Blooms relate to Celosia, just being an elegant song about someone who is not traditionally masculine and owns up to it. Also because Celosia is a grass type. Inchworm is like interacting with Ravenger, at first intimidating but winds up sounding goofy by the end.

This was one that I had a blast with and one I had in my head for a while. Bottomless Pitt and HEAT both have the energy of what it feels like being in Jake’s presence: it is stress inducing with Jake threatening you in some capacity. TABOO does sort of handle in how the siblings handle all of their sexual relationships with everyone involved. Bad Boyfriend does highlight how really warped and fucked up Sara and Jake’s relationship are. Misfit Love, however, could best describe the whole cast, fucked up but with varying degrees of comradery.

Since this one was for a specific character this was a bit tougher, but I still think I managed to make a decent list. Glass House deals with how Isis was raised by her mom, in an abusive cult-like household. Can You Forgvie Her and Rattlesnake deal with the uncertainty about leaving her mom in terms of learning about what her mom withheld from her. Bergschrund is what I would see as her fight theme, very distorted but sharp. Don’t Speak deals with Rosie and Honey’s romantic relationship deteriorating and how it pains the both of them
