#DIDYOUKNOW Aaliyah was scheduled to perform live on stage with three-time Grammy winner Seal at Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, California. >> B.R.E.A.T.H.E Breast Cancer Benefit Concert 2001
Per an LA Times article (dated August 30, 2001), Seal had just met Aaliyah 2 weeks prior when they got together to talk about which songs to perform at an Oct. 27 breast cancer benefit concert in LA.
“You meet and touch somebody and then, two weeks later, they’re dead. I kept thinking: ‘It’s just a dream. I’m going to wake up in a bit.’ But she isn’t here,” Seal said. “It’s really sad. She was so young and with such a promising future.”
Seal found out about Aaliyah's death Saturday (8/25) when a friend left a phone message, saying Aaliyah had been in an accident. Seal did not know the severity of the accident and had hoped Aaliyah survived, but sadly she didn't.
Seal would go on to perform with Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind.
The money raised was donated in Aaliyah’s name to the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center and New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Jenkins told us Aaliyah’s death “made me cry like a baby.”
