Südengland 2023 - Tag 10 Teil 1

Ladies and Gentlemen!

Heute müssen wir uns ein bisschen beeilen, den wir wollen rechtzeitig zur Öffnung der Ticketschalter am Windsor Castle sein, denn heute findet dort die berühmte Wachablösung statt.

Schloss Windsor liegt 40 km von London entfernt und war der bevorzugte Wochenendwohnsitz von Queen Elizabeth. Unter allen königlichen Besitztümern war Windsor Castle bei weitem das Lieblingsschloss von Queen Elizabeth II.

Das Wort “Windsor” stammt aus dem altenglischen Windlesoren, was so viel wie „Winde am Flussufer“ bedeutet.

Man konnte mit einem Blick auf den Fahnenmast über dem berühmten Runden Turm leicht feststellen, ob die Queen im Windsor Castle war. Der Union Jack wurde herabgelassen und durch die königliche Standarte ersetzt, die dort blieb, bis die Königin das Schloss verließ.

Genau wie in der Hauptresidenz der Monarchen, dem Buckingham Palace, findet auch auf Schloss Windsor eine Wachablösung statt. Das Schloss ist mit einer Fläche von 5,2 Hektar die größte bewohnte Festung der Welt.

Die Wachablösung ist eine der ältesten und bekanntesten Zeremonien, welche auf Henry den VII. zurückgeht. Also bereits eine über 700-jährige Tradition aufzuweisen hat. Das "Changing of the Guard" ist keine rein zeremonielle Veranstaltung.

Traditionell wird die Königsfamilie von bestens ausgebildeten Soldaten bewacht, welche bereits auf militärische Kampferfahrung zurückgreifen können. Die Guards sind in der Regel Infanterie Soldaten, die in ihrer Paradeuniform den Palast bewachen.

Die Wachen tragen plüschiges Schwarz auf dem Haupt. Sie gehören zum Klischee-Bild Großbritanniens wie Big Ben oder die roten Telefonzellen.

Diese klassische Mütze ist 46 Zentimeter hoch und wiegt rund sieben Kilo. Nur wenige ausgewählte Regimente dürfen sie tragen. Üblicherweise kommt dafür das Fell weiblicher kanadischer Braunbären zum Einsatz.

"Im Kampf trug die Bärenfellmütze zur Größe des Soldaten bei, der sie trug - und damit zur Einschüchterung", heißt es. Die Wachen sind extrem stolz darauf, ihre Bärenfellmützen und damit ein "ikonisches Symbol Großbritanniens" tragen zu dürfen.

Die diensthabenden Soldaten – genannt "The Old Guard" – werden beim Wachwechsel durch "The New Guard" ersetzt. Dies bedeutet, dass eine neue Gruppe von Soldaten die Verantwortung für die Bewachung des Palastes übernimmt. Dies geschieht dienstags, donnerstags, samstags und am Sonntag um 11:00 Uhr.

Die Soldaten, die die Wache in Windsor Castle wechseln, sind Teil der fünf Infanterieregimenter der Household Division und der beiden Regimenter von Kavallerie der Household Cavalry.

Zum Klang der Blaskapelle verlassen die Soldaten der Neuen Garde die Victoria-Kaserne (Victoria Barracks) zu Fuß.

Sie marschieren in Trittfrequenz entlang der Sheet Street und der High Street - bis zur Kreuzung mit der Statue der Königin Victoria - bevor sie das Schloss durch das Henry VIII Gate betreten.

Die Größe der Wachmannschaft ist davon abhängig, ob der König in Windsor weilt. Wenn "The Royal Standard", den Dachgiebel ziert, ist der König anwesend und die Truppenstärke der Guards entsprechend größer.

Die Ablösung wird durch die Klänge einer Gardekapelle begleitet, die neben traditionellen militärischen Märschen auch Songs beliebter Shows des West End und sogar bekannte Pop-Songs spielt.

Am Ende der Zeremonie verlässt die alte Garde Windsor Castle (Windsor Castle), um sich den Victoria Barracks anzuschließen. Das ganze Spektakel dauert ungefähr 45 Minuten.

Wer hier einen guten Platz ergattern möchte, sollte sich frühzeitig einen Platz sichern. Entweder an der Straße oder im Lower Ward von Schloss Windsor.

Um in das Schloss zu kommen sind aufwändige Sicherheitskontrollen zu überstehen, die denen an einem Flughafen in nichts nachstehen.

Heute waren tausende Menschen unterwegs, um das Spektakel zu erleben und alle standen geduldig in der Schlange.

Die Straßen waren bereits am frühen Morgen überall abgesperrt, sowie auch die Bürgersteige, wo die Guarde entlang marschieren würde.

Und natürlich waren auch die Souvenirverkäufer bestens auf den Ansturm von Touristen vorbereitet. ...

2. What does your OCs handwriting look like?

Common, Fereldan, and Alfish (basically Fereldan City Elven) all use runes. The shapes of runes are designed to be carved and haven't yet officially adjusted to paper, so we can't quite reach the nigh illegible cursive he would surely otherwise use

Novhen writes in compact letters. He goes quick on his downstroke, so they also usually show with longer tails with a curve at the end as he moves his quill to begin the next letter.

I've been working on my Alfish conlang, and have the futhorc i'll be using mostly settled, so i can provide an attempt at how he'd write his full name (excluding the endless list of titles he could stuff next to it):

Novhen Tabris ben Cyrion (ᚾᛟᚡᚻᛠᚾ ᛏᚫᛒᚱᛆᚴ ᛒᛠᚾ ᚴᛖᚱᛖᚩᚾ)

(let the ᛒ and ᚱ provide the baseline for where the bottom of the letter is supposed to end)

7. If your OC could meet any historical or past figure, whether in the real world or in their own canon lore, who would it be and why?

Pre-Warden, he'd answer Alidda of Halamshiral. She's plainly badass, and the kind of figure he would lookup to the most as a young boy.

Post-conscription, his answer would change to Garahel because who else is there that could possibly understand what he's been through so completely?

10. What piece of moody poetry or novel quote best encompasses your character?

It's been a while since i've read sufficient moody literature and most of my marked up books are currently lost to storage :[, but i found this quote from the nearest one i had on hand:
