I like, I like!
5. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?
Status Quo. It got feedback and even a following because it's a chaptered fic, and it fits with what the fandom wants in terms of canon fixing. But I don't think much happens in it and I don't find it very compelling. Also, as a oneshot and short fic reader, it's not what I would want to read first.
17. Your favorite character to write this year?
Oh, that's a hard one. I think it's Bilbo Baggins (yes, I know I haven't published this fic yet and am nowhere near it). There's this thing in the Hobbit fandom about Bilbo: every writer characterizes him quite differently, he's not pinned down as either book!Bilbo or movie!Bilbo. It's sort of okay to write him OOC as long as you respect some loose characteristics, which is good for me because while I love Richard Armitage's portrayal of Thorin, I'm not a fan of Freeman's Bilbo. It's only by reading about him and writing him in fanfiction that I've gotten to really like the character, and I think my Bilbo is cool!
I also got to write a scene and a half in my massive SPN AU project, and writing Dean Winchester even for a few words was all the pleasure I expected it to be.
26. What鈥檚 your most common category?
It's M/M, I've exclusively written about gay male ships (even the stuff I haven't published yet). I'm a victim of these shows that only bother to flesh out their male characters + love to queerbait. But who knows what I'll write in 2024? (not me. I don't know.)
Thank you so much for asking, Jay, this was fun to do 馃挏

A year ago today, I began my final semester at Rutgers University, finishing up my long-put-off BA degree. My degree is in History, but I also had to choose a minor, so I went with English.
I'd taken a class in Children's Lit in the Fall of 2020, and absolutely adored the professor. When scheduling for my last semester, I saw he was teaching a class on Criticism and Culture of 20th Century Literature, and was definitely interested.
Then I saw the subtopic- JRR Tolkien.
Hesitation. I'd read (or attempted to read) The Hobbit when I was about nine. I hated it. Put it down about 1/3 of the way through and never picked it up again. I actively avoided any and all things Tolkien from that moment on.
But....
I really did love Professor Jackson's style of teaching - he didn't care if you agreed with him, and in fact preferred pushback on what we discussed in class. So... I decided to risk spending fourteen weeks reading and discussing The Hobbit and the LOTR.
The first day of class, the fanboys went absolutely silent when, during that godawful "get to know you" portion of class, I said I wasn't a fan of Tolkien and had actually taken the class to challenge myself. They were shocked--shocked, says I.
But...
I fell in love with the books. Then I had to see the movies. And since June of 2021, I've written some 750k words in Hobbit/Richard Armitage fanfiction. Until the spring of 2021, I didn't even know who RA was, if you can believe that. 馃槀
I came back to Tumblr after a looooong hiatus and found the fandoms here and they are the most welcoming people I've ever met. I've made so many wonderful friends here - like my fellow Thorin simps:
@i-did-not-mean-to @lathalea @bitter-sweet-farmgirl @linasofia @fizzyxcustard @legolasbadass @kibleedibleedoo @xxbyimm @laurfilijames @thewarriorandtheking
And these awesome peeps -@shalinizhara @lordoftherazzles @sketch-and-write-lover @enchantzz @blueberryrock @sherala007 @tschrist1
And so many others as well!!
So long story short (too late!) it's because of this one class and this one amazing professor that I'm here now. And to everyone who has read, commented, reblogged my fics - thank you so much! I 馃挏 you all!
