Kyidyl Does Archaeology - Part 6

(yep, the rest of the parts of this are all under the KyidylCL tag, in case you happen across just this one.)

Rocks and...other stuff

Ok so here we are...we’ve arrived at my least favorite thing. Lithics. I’ll be honest with you guys, my disinterest in lithics means that I don’t have a lot to add here. But...I’ll do what I can.

So, first off, we’ve found *thousands* of lithics on this site. It is by far the most common thing we have. We’ve found broken tools, used up tools, intact points, fire cracked rock, like...the whole nine. One of the things you can learn from lithics is how far people were going to get their rock. For example, we have a lot of jasper in our lithics, so we know they were going up onto the nearby mountain because that’s where the nearest jasper deposits are. I *absolutely* am not the right person to go into a detailed account here, but I do know that they were going pretty far away to get their supplies - even over to the other side of the mountains. Or at least they were trading with people in closer proximity to those places.

I think what’s amazing to me is the degree to which they work quartz and quartzite. Here’s one of the points we found:

I’m pretty sure, if I’m remembering the things the Rock Guy told me correctly, that point is made of quartzite. Quartz and quartzite are very hard (7/7.5 on the Mohs scale aka the rock hardness scale.), so working them is difficult. I don’t know how to do it, but I know it must have taken either an impressive amount of brute force or an impressive amount of energy. Either way, it’s neat. Hell I found a piece of quartz the last time I was in the field (which I don’t have, or I’d show you.) that literally looked like it was cut like a gemstone. It’s more likely it came out of a geode but still, they did cool shit with quartz. Some of what we’ve found has been almost as clear as glass.

I’m aware that the style a point is made in (and everything that is, well, pointy...is a point. It includes spear tips, arrow heads, etc.) is indicative of the age of a site, but I don’t know enough here to go into it and we’ve already covered age in the pottery and digging post (it’s late woodland - early contact, c. 1300s - 1700s), so I’m just gonna show you some cool pictures.

First point that we found...

Same hole, another point. Probably both are arrowheads given the size. The one I’m holding up in the picture up there was probably a spear, not an arrowhead. Arrowheads are actually really small.

Here’s another weird rock:

It’s weird because that one in the upper right has that groove in it and is kinda squished. to me it looks like a tile, which would be really anachronistic to this particular site, and our Rock Guy assures me this is a natural thing, but these rocks have something on them I’ve been finding on a lot of the lithics: a red residue. You can see it pretty clearly on the top surface on the center rock, but it’s in the grooves on the right one too. These rocks didn’t come out of the pit with the red dirt, so it’s not like...red dirt from burning. To me it looks like ocre, but this is one of those areas where my knowledge base just comes up short and I need to wait for someone who knows more to look at them. But lets just say that I have this experience often where I’ll say something like “this looks like ocre” and people will be like “nooo, that doesn’t make sense” and then they’ll spend some time with the artefact and be like “hey look at this it looks like ocre” and I’m over here like....yes....I know....I told you that weeks ago...perhaps if I’d found a way to say it in a male voice we wouldn’t be having this conversation. x.x Aaaaannnnnyway.

Another kind of rock we have are fire-cracked rocks. Back in the day they used to heat rocks in the fire and then put them in pots to boil the water. They often reuse them, and after a few uses the constant “hot rock plunged into cold water” thing causes them to crack. It’s *extremely* common to find this all over the world. I saw it at the site I worked in England, too, when we were digging the Roman stuff. And it’s always kind of confused me because even though water boils basically instantly when you add the very hot rock, it would likely take longer for the rock to heat up than it would to just, y’know, boil the water, so why use the rocks? Then it occurred to me: because the rocks were just casually tossed into fires that weren’t being used for cooking. So you toss a few into the fire you’re using for warmth or for smoking or whatever in the morning and by the time dinner rolls around you just grab some rocks that’ve been in the fire all day and you toss them into a pot of water. Multitasking ftw! I would find some pics for you but I’m NGL guys, they just look like stones that’ve been cracked in half. People weren’t all that picky about the type or anything like that.

So yeah, that’s rocks, now who wants to see some weird shit? You, obviously, YOU want to see some weird shit.

Weird Shit

First up, because I STILL haven’t figured out why this is like this, we have this bone:

Ok honestly I’m only like 93% sure it’s a small piece of bone, but like...it’s definitely natural. It’s been burned for awhile but the weird part here is that IT’S GREEN. Now that’s not in and of itself weird - this is what happens to bone when there’s some metal nearby. It often leaves behind green staining on bones. But there was no metal in the ground here, and this thing was pretty deep. Below the civil war trench stuff. So I have no idea why it’s green like this.

This...thing. No idea what it is. Roughly a quarter inch long, metallic...looks like slag but, again, came out of a hole that was really too deep for us to be finding iron in (in this case, iron is a modern contaminant or something you’d only find in the top - IE, later - layers.). Meteorite, maybe? We’ve found some other weird stuff like this too but it was from much higher layers.

The back and front of a piece of bone that is too small for me to make a determination as to whether or not it’s human without like...a microscope. I don’t have one. I mean it probably *isn’t* human, but the color is right, soooo...IDK I just thought it was weird.

This is another small, weird, brown thing. BUT! it’s a different kind of small, weird brown thing than the other one. The other one passes the magnet test and fails to leave a streak when wet. This one fails the magnet test but left a brown streak on my skin when wet (no...I didn’t lick this one). So I’m pretty sure it’s a coprolite, but I’ve never handled them before so I’m not entirely certain. It looks like one to me, though (coprolite is very old poop. Poop is important bc it informs on diet and stuff. There have been literal fights and thefts in the archaeological community over coprolites.). This came out of one of the test pits and we haven’t dug over there yet so IDK.

This next bit is less weird and more cool.

This is a very small, very burned piece of bone but it’s cool for two reasons. One, see that long light-color diagonal mark in the lower right area of the top surface? That’s either a butchery mark or more tooth marks. I learn towards butchery becaaaaause....see how flat this is? That only happens when it’s been cut by people. Bones don’t break clean and flat like that, the crack or they splinter. When they crack they do it vertically because that is with the grain of the bone. This is horizontal, or across the grain. They have to be cut to look so flat. Here’s another example from the test pits:

See? Perfectly flat across the grain. This one has also been cut and burned. The white color of the two bones means they’ve been burned for a long time at a high temperature. All of the collagen - the soft stuff - gets burned off when you do it for long enough and at a high enough temperature and the minerals are left behind. Both of these images are macro images on bones that are smaller than an inch.

Ok, one more weird thing:

This is actually the back and front of a rock. It’s flat on both sides like pottery, but it tasted like a rock and it has no temper so...rock. But in that top image it has some kind of dark residue on it that almost looks like rust or paint, and the opposite side has small marks that look like cut marks or tool marks. I’m not sure what kind of rock it was, but it also had a dry, sandy texture to it. IDK it was just weird. The marks could just be damage over time to the rock (what we call taphonomic damage.), but the residue is pretty strange.

Anyway, that about wraps it up. I think that what I’m gonna do is start going through the uncleaned material I have downstairs (I got sidetracked by covid and the holidays. :P) and start posting what I found or anything out of the ordinary, if you guys want anyway. You are extremely attractive, after all.♥ You didn’t pick up much, just some vegetables, fruits, eggs, milk, and a few more contributions for dishes.♥ It took about 5 grocery paper bags, and Zen carried them all.♥ It is very gentleman-like, but.. Dude.♥ “Zen, let me,”♥ “No, I am going to carry it.”♥ Zen must think carrying all the bags must mean he is badass, and shouldn’t be messed with..♥ When you got home, he put all the groceries up. He was so upset that his grasp squashed a peach he was putting in the fruit basket.♥ Zen cursed, and sighed.♥ “Zennyyyy~, what’s wrong? Is it because of that boy today?”♥ Zen put his head in his hands, muffling his words.♥ “Well, what if it is? 707 / SAEYOUNG☏ You and 707 were at the park to get some fresh air.☏ You both decided to sit down on a bench near the pet area.☏ As Saeyoung was on his phone looking at the *~dankest~* memes and you were eating a snack..☏ A dog with a loosened leash came over, jumping on your legs. Your attention turned to the dog, as it whined for your snack. (Some snacks you eat, your dogs can eat too! See what is good and not so good to feed a dog here.)☏ You give some of your snack to the cute husky dog.☏ Saeyoung looks over and smiles, admiring of how generous you are. He gets so lost that he doesn’t notice the woman jogging to MC.☏ “I’m so sorry that my dog bothered you, I guess that collar is for when she gets bigger..”☏ “Ah, don’t apologize! She’s super cute! What’s her name..?”☏ Saeyoung got lost into his memes again, letting you converse with the female.. that was until he tuned in again not long after.☏ “..and her name is Dara! She is cute, but she can’t possibly be as cute as you.”☏ He looks up, just in time to catch the woman wink at MC, then glide her gaze to him.☏ She widens her eyes,☏ “OH..is this your boyfriend..?”☏ “Yeah, I am, and I’m allergic to dogs.”☏ Saeyoung is quick to get you out of the area, and you’re now on your way home.☏ “Since when were you allergic to dogs?”☏ “Since five minutes ago, she was hitting on you right in front of me, I bet she trained her dog to sniff out pretty girls, so she can make a move! Cats would never!”☏ When you get home, he goes into his ‘office’ and drowns himself in the light of his computer screen.☏ You knew he was upset, so you grabbed a couple cans of PhD Pepper and a bag of Honey Buddha chips.☏ You opened the door.☏ “Baby.. I have PhD Pepper and HBC..”☏ “Come here.”☏ You sat in his lap while he worked, eating and talking, making him forget about today as you douse him in your ever-glowing love and passion.

JUMIN

φ He was gone on a business trip from Monday to Thursday..φ At least, that’s what he told you.φ This cute fuck wanted to surprise you, and show up on Wednesday with nice gifts, since he knew it had to be lonely when he wasn’t around..φ He walked into the penthouse, just to find you chatting with one of the younger bodyguards.φ Oh hell to the no.φ Why was the bodyguard talking to you, does he want to be fired? Why were you smiling, have you ever smiled like that when talking to Jumin?φ All his thoughts accumulated, but he pushed them to the back of his head.φ Jumin sets down MC’s gift bag, making sure it was audible enough to attract attention.φ “Jumin, you’re home!”, you smiled and hurried to Jumin for a hug.φ He accepts, obviously, but glares at the bodyguard.φ “Welcome home, sir, I hope your trip was enjoyable.”φ “Yes, it was, so how enjoyable was it to speak to my wife, and look at her the way you did?”φ “Jumin, he was just speaking to me,”φ “It was very enjoyable, thank you, I’m disappointed that you were to marry her before I did.”φ Oh shit.φ “I hope that remark was worth it, you’re fired, goodbye.”φ “Jumin, it’s fine,”φ “It is everything but fine, MC, excuse me.”φ The bodyguard left, and you saw the gift bag on the floor.φ You looked through it to find a box.φ Opening it, you found a necklace inside. It had your’s and Jumin’s fiirst initials, intertwined, your initials crested with your birthstone, Jumin’s with opal.φ It was gorgeous..φ “Jumin..? Dear, please help me.”φ “Is something wro-..oh.”φ He came in and saw you had the necklace.φ “I couldn’t help but look, I hope you don’t mind.. would you latch it for me..?”φ “It is no problem.. but yes, of course.”φ You give him the necklace, him putting it around your neck. You turn around, hugging him.φ “I am so sorry.. it gets lonely, I didn’t catch onto the liking he had for me.. I missed you so much..”φ Putting his strong arms around you, he sighed a relieved sigh.. “It’s alright, honey. I missed you so much more. It feels so great to have you in my arms.”φ That night, you rubbed his back, and he played with your hair. You cuddled up together, intertwining your bodies, along with your love for one another..mushy gushy.

YOOSUNG

★ Yoosung begged you to play LOLOL with him.★ He wanted you to play LOLOL sooo bad, that he created an account for you, and leveled it up!★ Sike, he paid 707 to hack in and level the character up.. the thought still counts.★ After teaching you how to play, (you caught up quickly,) he decided to let you play with some of his LOLOL buddies.★ Giving you a mic, he turns his on and notifies everyone that he’s on.★ Yoosung is greeted by them all, and they’re all connecting to the servers until they see your username.. ‘Yooscutie’★ “Yoosung, why is that my username?”★ “Becaaaaause, it’s true.”★ Everyone gasped when they heard your voice.★ “Yoosung, is that who you’re dating?”★ “Yeah, I am very lucky!!”★ You blushed, yet the members made retch noises into the mic.★ As everyone played, you managed to get everyone cool armor and potions, and levels by the intervals!!★ “Oh my gosh, Yoosung, whoever you’re dating is a legend!!”★ “I taught them, that’s why..”★ “Oh really? ☽ You were out with him, taking pictures of what you find beautiful in the world around you.☽ You took pictures of cherry trees, flowers, streams, and areas of the park.☽ You couldn’t find anything else, so you had an idea.☽ “Jihyun, we should ask people what they think is beautiful and get a variety!”☽ “That’s a good idea, Pumpkin, let’s do it.”☽ nicknames from v is my kink☽ You asked plenty of people. and many of their answers were thoughtful, and sentimental.☽ Finally, you came to this young man. ☽ “Hello, sir, we have been asking many people what they believe is beautiful, and photographing it. Please, tell us what you think is beautiful.”☽ The young man stands up.☽ “Excuse me, may I borrow the camera?”☽ V looks at him and grins, “Yes, here you go.”☽ The man then proceeds to take a picture of you. ☽ “I believe that you, miss, are quite beautiful.”☽ You smile and thank him, as that was such a sweet thing to say. ☽ He proceeds to go on his way after handing V his camera, V is a bit jealous, and admits it.☽ “I’m quite jealous of him..”☽ “What, Jihyun, why..?”☽ “He had such a clever and true answer.. I just wish I could have thought of that before him.” He slightly smiled. ☽ “Jihyun.. you’re so soft and sweet.. I love you so much.”☽ “I love you, too, sweetheart.”☽ You printed the pictures when you got home and they were so beautiful, so indeed.☽ V was even so sweet that he framed the picture of you, and put it on top of his dresser.☽ CINNAMON ROLLLLLLL!!!!

Bored

This is one of the first pieces of fluff I wrote with these three. Still one of my favorites.

In which Eva’s short attention span and hyperactivity backfires on her.

Jack Murphy had been sprawled out on the couch fairly peacefully for the last hour, his head resting more or less comfortably in Eva’s lap. Eva, for her part, was leaning against a pile of pillows at least as big as she was, one hand idly petting Jack’s hair while the other fiddled aimlessly with her phone.

Unfortunately for Jack, Eva was getting bored.

“Hey. Hey Jack.” She poked him. “Hey Jack, do you wanna hear a joke?”

“No.”

“Yeah you do. Here goes: ¿Por qué es un pez tan perezoso?”

“Eva, you know I don’t speak spanish.”

Eva ignored him. “¡Porque hace nada!” she exclaimed, complete with jazz hands.

Jack groaned. “I don’t even know what means but I still hate you for it.”

“No you don’t.”

“Whatever,” Jack grumbled, and rolled back over.

Eva let the silence stand for almost a full five minutes. Almost.

“Hey Jack. Jack. Jack-attack. Jack. Jaaaaaaaaaack.”

Jack opened one eye. “Whaaaaaaaaat?”

“Dude, are you falling asleep on me there?”

Jack opened his other eye, if only to glare more effectively. “Why did you wake me up?”

“Becaaaaause...you’re cute.”

Jack rolled his eyes.

“Aaaaaaaaand I want to kiss your face.”

“Nope. Not allowed.”

“I think it is.”

“No, because I’m gonna escape you,” Jack said, already sliding sideways off the couch.

Eva grabbed him by the shoulders and hauled him back into her lap. “You can’t escape. You’re pinned.” She immediately began peppering Jack’s face with kisses.

“Ewwww, gross,” Jack complained, still trying to squirm away.

“Oh shoosh, you love it.”

“I refuse to even--did you just lick my nose?”

Eva cackled. “And what are you gonna do about it?”

Just before the whole mess devolved into a slapfight, Ris wandered into the room. “Are you two being gross again?” she asked.

“Ris, shut up and get your butt over here,” Eva said, stretching out one arm.

“Can’t. I’m doing shit.”

“That’s always your excuse.”

“Yeah, but I’ve actually been of help to civilization.”

“You’ve been playing video games for the past two hours,” Eva pointed out flatly.

“I was playing Civ.”

“Neeeeeeerd,” Jack cut in.

“Okay but the point is--” Eva cut in over both of them, “--the point is that you should come over here, and sit on the couch with us. And we should make out. Because I’m bored. And mostly because you’re cute.”

“That’s always your excuse,” Ris deadpanned.

“Oh, for God’s sake, just kiss the girl,” Jack said. “Lord knows she’s never gonna shut up until you do.”

Ris rolled her eyes. “Fine, whatever.”

“Who knows?” Jack rambled. “Maybe you’ll even distract her long enough I can actually finish my nap.”

Ris poked him in the leg. “You’re in the way. Move.”

“No.”

“Have it your way,” Ris shrugged, and picked Jack up bridal-style.

“You know,” Jack commented dryly, “I always forget that you can do that.”

“I’m not sure how,” Eva said.

Ris smirked. “So who’s the nerd now?”

“Still you,” Jack grumbled.

“So we kissing now or what?” Eva asked.

“I am,” Ris shrugged and walked off, still carrying Jack.

“Wait, what?” Eva gave her best sad-puppy impression, to little effect. “Why?”

“I could hear your jokes from across the house,” Ris called back over her shoulder. “Por qué es un pez perezoso my ass. This was a rescue mission.”

“That was plenty funny,” Eva sulked, flopping herself dramatically across the couch.

Ris ignored her, and made off victorious with her new catch.
