I don’t know if anyone else who follows me has both read the book and seen the movie Poor Things
But I read it this week and watched the movie last night and I feel like I need to talk about it with someone because it’s still rattling around in my head
#visually the movie was absolutely stunning. deserved the production awards it got without a doubt#and some of the changes I really did enjoy#the change in camera and filming style to fit tone was amazing in ways I don’t have the film vocab to fully compliment#making Godwin also somewhat monstrous but also adding the aspect of felicity was something I found so interesting bc he SHOULD becomplicated#dafoe was great with that complication though#and I liked that it was focused more on Bella and not filtered through two different men’s views#(even though I do think those filters were very much part of the point in the book it wouldn’t have worked as well in a movie)#some of the plot streamlining made a lot of sense. making everything in the house feel unreal was a great choice#I do think they made McCandless come off sweeter than I found him in the book? maybe just bc the actor was charming idk#ruffalo was excellent playing a man who Sucks#the Alexandria moment I liked but I feel like beyond that they really glossed over some of the themes of class and healthcare disparity?#Paris touched on it for sure but it felt more present in the books esp with including Bella’s career#and I don’t know how I feel about the ending#I understand making it more hopeful than the book. but what she did with the general I’m kind of. meh. can’t decide#but I also didn’t fully love the ending of the book either so idk how I feel overall#but this will be a story that stays with me I think

The strongberry CEO’s letter was really interesting to read. The stuff about the harassment is gross and unacceptable and if they believe it’s only one person I hope they can take some sort of legal action against that person (though it may be more difficult if they’re outside Korea). But separate from that, I thought his commentary on fanservice and popularity was very interesting. It reads as though he believes at this point in the industry fanservice is basically a requirement now. I feel like if a queer production house feels that way, then other production companies must feel the same way.
It is interesting to me bc before Strongberry started making their more sweet love stories, Matchbox (who seems to be their partner) made a series of short films that were typically much more gritty and dealt with queer themes you don’t see depicted often in BL in Korea (host bars/sex work, dating apps/hookup culture, beauty standards, etc), and I sincerely doubt when those films were made that they felt as though the actors needed to do fanservice. Though I guess I can only assume as I have no idea what the promotion (if any) was like.
Further, I liked him talking about how yes of course some straight actors take BL roles for popularity but then when they and the show gain that popularity that then opens doors for more opportunities and funding for queer projects, which can then helps make gay love more normalized. I appreciated this a lot because I see a lot of people downplaying popular media as a form of activism, but it absolutely can be. Will and Grace is often credited for helping to increase gay acceptance in the US in the 90s/00s, for instance!
He even mentions how the popularity has likely driven the government to provide funds for productions (I assume he is referencing the Love in the Big City adaptations and I’m very interested to see how that show and movie are marketed).
I also appreciate how he talked about how it would be basically impossible to make BL in Korea if companies tried to insist on only hiring gay actors. I think it would be good for some people to remember that.
I don’t really have a specific point or question I don’t think, I just had a lot of thoughts about that letter and what was said apart from the harassment. Though I do sincerely hope the actor and his girlfriend are doing alright and I hope they can curb the harassment soon, it’s so shameful to know that is happening to them.
I mean, admittedly, this is why I mostly stay out of that except to express my inherent discomfort with the way people view actors and fanservice.
Yes, he said fantastic things and explained many things but he should never had had to do that.
I should never have seen a two page post trying to 'explain' why Ohm and Nanon aren't doing another BL together that absolutely assumed they're really dating and went from there.
I shouldn't be worried about naming other couples because even here people will come and no really me about them dating because of the way they do fanservice.
I actually worry more about gay actors in a way because putting their sexuality on display like this can be actually dangerous for them (see the attack on Holland' so...
What I'm saying is that I am glad he said that and I am glad people agree but I also wish he didn't have to and that there are sides to this fandom the scare me.

I put on the Miku expo on YouTube bc I like putting on the vocaloid/Hololive/etc concerts in the background while I draw and stuff and WOW they were not lying, even filmed from an optimal viewing angle this looks embarrassing and there’s not even an attempt to use the lighting to help make the illusion as a matter of fact every time the lights go up it looks way worse. It’s only like a quarter of the stage too.
Hatsune Miku looked better live a decade ago :|
if I paid hundreds of bucks to see real life Miku and I got what’s effectively a high production movie showing I’d be soo pissed

hii! if tyler and the narrator went on vacation where do you think they would go? and how do you think they would act? eg the narrator stressing about making sure he has packed everything etc (hope your doing okay!!)
Thank u!!! I’ll probably feel better later on 🥲🥲I just need to focus on other stuff so I don’t think too hard about what happened lolll SO ANYWAYS
I THINK… they wouldn’t have any places shared they’d wanna go in mind. What I mean by that is like Tyler wants to go to small towns and random states for no particular place to see or stay, while the narrator would wanna go to the places that are advertised as ur usual ideal vacation spots.
Not that narrator wants to feel like he’s living lavishly again (tho he lowkey likes taking small breaks from their house that’s falling apart) but he does wanna treat Tyler to amazing views, places and luxury even tho Tyler would ‘hate’ hearing that lol. So like Tyler would say he wants to go to texas while the narrator would say he wants to go Hawaii.
-
•Jack would definitely get stressed a bit about making sure they both have packed everything.. but I feel like at least once Tyler has told him to “stop worrying man! Just live!!!” And Jack listened.. and that happened to be the trip where they both left a bunch of important things at home. Plus I think Jack would pack Tylers bag for him because Tyler ‘doesn’t care’.. so Tyler is without clean socks, boxers and his small amount of self care products. Which would probably earn Jack a smack on the back of his head and Tyler acting cold to him for a bit smh 🤦‍♀️
•Tyler would wanna take a lot of pictures!!! Of himself, Jack, them together, weird shit they see, and etc. he probably took pictures that don’t even make any sense too like a zoom in of one of Jacks eyes 🤨 He really loves filming and taking pictures I think!!!!!!! Maybe that’s part of the reason he works in a movie theater…he’d wanna do something where he could film/take pictures as a job but just never really went out of his way to go down that path for some reason. (Sorry im getting off track & rambling lol)
Anyways he has a picture binder thing he stole that he keeps all the pictures in! And will talk about them all & show them off to anyone even if they don’t care lol.
•Jack would take a little souvenir if he could. Like the stuff you buy. But Tyler wouldn’t like that so Narrator just takes like a small rock off the ground somewhere and maybe hides that he did from him 💀 bc Tyler and his rants about possessions.
Tyler allowed himself ONCE to get one of those keychain things that has random names on it because he found one that said Tyler that was hot pink and glittery.
•Tyler loves to try new food from different places! Jack sticks to things that are familiar to him bc autism but Tyler loves ordering just anything that sounds interesting or new (also bc Tyler has AUTISM! He likes to seek out new sensory stuff while Jack likes to stay with what he knows)
•Assuming if they just drove somewhere together, Tyler is obviously the one driving while Jack is doing everything else. Passing him snacks (and probably feeding him), reading directions, changing the music, ‘keeping him awake’ by uh… being a little handsy and uhh uhm I won’t say what else 👀👀 BUT YEAH he’s doing everything while Tyler drives.
Tyler honestly gets kinda mad that Jack doesn’t trust him driving.. he only crashed a car once on purpose… Jeez 🙄

i am very bored rn, so
ride the cyclone youtube au
they all have semi-popular yt channels in this au. i dont know what counts as popular so take that as anywhere from 1-20k each. whatever you see it as will work
mischa
had to start with the king of kaching himself. Obviously he posts frequently to badegg, most of his time on his yt chamnels goes to his music, but he'd start badegg_games as a little side thing and react to horror games he really likes, which gets peoples attention. he puts links to the original badegg in his descriptions which leads to more people finding his music. how much more? you decide. he also collabs pretty frequently with ricky, and brings other choir members on sometimes. his backgroud is just his room, maybe with some extra lighting. he edits his own videos and they are exactly how you'd expect them to be.
ricky
he absolutely has a gaming channel. he might stream as well. he's played every single fnaf fangame, including all the dating sims. hes also played onlycans. that one got age-restricted. any niche game he finds he makes a video on it. he uses text to speech in his videos, most of the time in post production so he doesn't have to type as he plays, and adds big subtitles. he also has a complete timeline of zolarian history. mischa and him collab pretty frequently, often playing multiplayer horror games together. he spends a lot of time on his video borders, and his channel logo is very fun and colourful. his cats show up very frequently in his videos, and when its something he doesn't think will jumpscare him, they're often sat on his lap as he plays. rpgs and sci-fi are some of the main types of games he plays, but theres a big variety. his channel name is linked to cats, zolar, or both.
ocean
she is freesciencelessons, but for every single subject. she is the only reason anyone is passing anything. she started it as either some extra credit project or as a way to revise, but people started following her and she actually quite liked making the videos, so she kept going. she doesn't bring other people onto her channel very often. her videos range from ten minutes to half an hour, depending on the subject, and shes very thorough. if its on any type of standardized test, ocean has made a video on it. she makes props for her videos and asks penny or ricky to animate things for her sometimes. her channel name is something simple like rosenbergrevision or something.
constance
did anyone watch quake n bakes? because that is what she'd do. shed post themed tutorials on how to bake different things. if it was a choir member's birthday, shed make them a themed treat and give it to them in the recording (if they were ok w it). her most popular tutorial/recipe were these 3D minecraft mob marshmallows she made for ricky, but her personal favourite are these little rose-shaped meringue cookies. sometimes she posts sewing videos as well, or little arts and crafts videos. she also promotes the cafe or makes cafe vlogs, but not often. her set up is pretty aesthetic and neat, but nothing extremely fancy. her intro is. short but sweet and she. has a little logo. her channel name is smthn like blackwoodbakes or connie'skitchen.
noel
he started making videos about poetry and film history and french cinema just to talk about them really. it was a passion project, he wasn't really too bothered about how many people saw it. he put work into it because he liked it, and he's haply with the followers he has. his videos are really long, and he goes super in depth. and then, he loses a bet to someone in the choir, and makes one of those "i watched _____ so you didn't have to" videos about some rlly bad movie that everybody takes the piss out of (think after or something). im picturing him with like a wine glass in hand making quips about whatever scene is on. it gets so many more views than his other videos. he's absolutely livid. but he makes more bcs people genuinely seemed to like the video. his dramatics and insults were quite interesting to watch, and soon its a pretty regular thing (if regular means once every four months). he still mostly makes his videos on things he likes, though. also, he managed to rope ocean into watching some horrible basic film with him and people like their dynamic, oddly enough. on halloween he reacts to horror movies with mischa. his channel name is something serious and probably ties into france somehow.
penny
shes a faceless youtuber and she has a pretty wide variety of videos. she used to be a stan acct for johnny moon before legoland, and she had to post a video on why what she did was wrong as community service. that one got a lot of views. she has a lot of art tips and speedpaints, as well as a lot of vlogs and a draw my life. she has a lot of videos about different types of music as well. her username has something to do with jane doe, she thought abt it because shes faceless and doesnt show her identity online and thought it was a fun idea. her set up is pretty basic, but its nice, and ezra's voice features in a lot of videos. the other choir members don't normally appear on her channel, but she, ricky and constance did an art challenge once.

What do you think about the live disney princess movies? Like the beauty and the beast could’ve used separate actors for visual acting and the singing, Emma Watson was a bit dodgy idk. The music is toned down in the live action versions either by removing the songs or just being poorly done. Listening to some clips of the little mermaid 😘 hopefully I get around to seeing whole thing.
so when i was watching the live action beauty and the beast and lamenting the horrible music choices i had a mutual who actually linked me this video essay talking about live action disney's music choices in general and it was quite revealing, i highly recommend it. as for how i felt about the movie on a personal level.. i despised it lol. i think in my thread for rewatching all of these princess movies it took up the most space bc i had so many complaints 😭 here are a few summarized lol:
why i think the drop-off in disney live actions occurs after maleficent and cinderella is bc of the fact that these two were not originally musical movies. there were far less constraints present by which disney had to orient the original character arcs, and it gave the writers room to take the stories where they wanted to. the disney live actions after don't have this luxury bc almost all of them are based on films that were movie musicals in the first place. so you're essentially recreating a film almost letter for letter, while nonetheless trying to push it beyond those constraints, and it overall makes for a product that feels very.. awkward. not to mention the live action's music simply does not compare to the original's in any way, like adapting one of disney's best soundtracks ever was already going to be a hassle but they somehow managed to plummet even further below expectations with the end product
in that vein, i think what the live action beauty and the beast really suffers from is being both underwritten and overwritten. it's not willing to expand on the movie's original canon and instead creates new canon where it's not even necessary. for example: the live action cinderella expands on lady tremaine's cruelty and gives it a basis rather than making her into a randomly evil figure. comparatively, the live action beauty and the beast introduces lore as to how belle and the beast's mothers died and it's just.. not needed at all? they don't bond with each other over tragedy. they bond with each other over being outcasts who are misunderstood.
the live action also strips the original movie of all of its fun. there's no scene with belle's father chancing upon a moment of explosive genius, no maneuvering gaston out of the house into a pig puddle while the wedding band unceremoniously breaks into song. it's so lifeless as a movie bc there's only so much it can translate to a live action medium. this also applies to so much of the line delivery, which hardly feels theatrical anymore
the beast.. i'm so upset over how they revamped his character. there's so much deliberation and built up suspense in his original introduction to both maurice and belle that is simply lost in the adaptation. the beast's not an aggressor from the start, he prowls, he approaches slowly, bc he recognizes that he is viewed by others as a monster, bc he anticipates the rejection and fear. he's not actually an animal at heart in the original. he's the one who offers her a room, he's skeptical but quietly hopeful she might join him for dinner. the frustration only comes after bc it's paired with the despair and desperation of knowing that he may live like this forever. the live action carries none of that nuance. it paints him as an aggressor, as someone who doesn't even Want to treat her as anything more than a prisoner, and is forced into placating her by his servants. it completely fails to understand the beast wanted to break the spell, but he felt hopeless as to how
i respect that emma watson is a feminist but that really did not call for altering the entire script of a movie that was already fine and feminist in its own right lol.. like if i wanted to watch a movie about a man learning that it's not girly and cringe to read romeo and juliet i would peruse romance book twt like it was an entertainment channel. the beast's problem originally was that he had spent so long living as a beast he forgot how to live as a human. he forgot how to read bc in his mind no beast needs to learn how to read. to turn that portrayal of insecurity and shame into something about him not respecting shakespeare was just.. utterly stupid? and condescending?
all of this to say i wasn't really a fan of any of the live actions after maleficent and cinderella lol like obv each movie has its unique issues but they are in the same vein as this one's. except, lo and behold, the hype for the little mermaid was so highly anticipated ig that they decided to learn sense and actually put substantial effort into it. i really think it's the best live action disney adaptation thus far, there are so many things about it i love, not least of all the actually sensible feminist changes to the original script as compared to how beauty and the beast tried to recreate something as "feminist" that was already feminist in the first place. like there's no doubt about it, the original the little mermaid is very largely framed around ariel's desire to be with eric. but without giving away too many spoilers, the live action does such a marvelous job at reframing ariel's desire as one for the world, and in a way that really emphasizes on her conflict with triton. i do have a few minor complaints of the film but as a whole it's a really well done revamp that takes an originally very daring female protagonist and fleshes her out even more in the best way possible. eric is also given way more agency and personality so it really feels like you're watching the development of a romance between equals. i am absolutely sure you'll enjoy it when you watch it!

hiiii <3 big ask big answer is what i'm expecting would LOVE to know your top 5/faves across various media that are new(in release or just new to you) this year! so: shows, movies, games, books, songs/albums, new artists you've discovered etc
OMG AAAAA I LOVE THIS ASK
brief comment i wanted to make, but this was the year i finally took control of my mental health and went to go see someone about it so congratulations to me for finally breaking down the wall of "im fine" and allowing myself to admit that i could use some help. that aside, lets get into it! beware, possible spoilers
MOVIES
1. Nope (dir. Jordan Peele) - this movie surprised me so much and reflects a LOT of my views on performative/spectacle-like behavior in front of the Camera and the effects things like hollywood or social media could potentially have on people...not going to get into that but i just liked the movie alot okay
2. X (dir. Ti West) - love me some camp. love mia goth. i also really liked Pearl and cannot WAIT for MaXXXine, i am so ready
3. Cruel Intentions (dir. Roger Kumble) - i dont think 2022 was the first year i watched Cruel Intentions but everytime i watch it, it feels like something brand new...i am so compelled to read the book that its based on like seriously
4. Turning Red (dir. Domee Shi) - this is the only Disney movie that exists to me...the mother-daughter relationship portrayed here is just so personal
5. Kiki’s Delivery Service (dir. Hayao Miyazaki) - yeah im extremely late to watching this lol. i watched literally every other ghibli film growing up but somehow, in some way, skipped over Kiki. so i watched it over the summer as an adult and needless to say...yeah i missed out as a kid asjashd
6. American Psycho (dir. Mary Harron) - this is the funniest film ive seen this whole year. im not even kidding
TV SHOWS
1. Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul - never thought id enjoy a show about a middle-aged white male turning to meth production to make ends meet and becoming the most annoying character ever created, but here we are. loved it, and literally EVERYONE around walt deserved so much better (jesse, gus, johnny/saul, mike, skylar, marie, hank)
2. Ranma 1/2 - ive taken a break from watching new anime this year and started diving into older ones. i love ranma simply bc its a bit ahead of its time and is just so easy to digest. just a fun little show!!! a great way to take my mind off of shit
3. The Sandman - just found out recently that this was a DC comic so congrats to DC for successfully infiltrating my anti-superhero visual barrier LOL. anyways i am in dire NEED of the next season
4. You - PENN BADGLEY. thats all im going to say. im a huge fan of Gossip Girl (2007) and as soon as i saw him playing the lead character i RAN to watch the first season when it dropped. was not disappointed
5. The Witcher - ive never played the game lol but the show is so good...im not a fan of GoT (and therefore will never watch HotD) so this show p much fills the dark fantasy void for me
6. Bridgerton - im so glad i got over my weird distaste and finally gave this show a try...i see the hype, i see it!! and the show itself is so beautiful to look at, despite being historically innacurate or whatever
7. Gossip Girl (2007) - ive watched and rewatched this show a grand total of maybe like....20 times in my life total. rewatched it again this year. all six seasons. it never gets old despite being the most ridiculous insipid shit ever. im also currently watching the new version, and while i love the cast and maybe the soundtrack, it doesnt match up to the campy and fun vibe that the first one had. it takes itself way too seriously and the plot is almost nonexistent lol
but anyway, lets move on to music!! im skipping over books bc i have currently finished NONE from the book haul i had back in october.
MUSIC
just gonna list out a bunch of songs that have carried me thru the last half of this year :]
ass like that victoria monet / bang (my body) chase icon / meta angel fka twigs / wish i never kehlani / king for a day pierce the veil, kellin quinn / pass the nirvana pierce the veil / antagonist nova twins / gibson girl ethel cain / like a tattoo sade / the perfect pair beabadoobee / so it goes tamino / daybreak’s bell l’arc-en-ciel / colors flow / distant tevomxntana, cayo / grapefruit tove lo
sorry if this is extremely long. thanks for asking!!!!!! ❤️

Mojo dojo casa house?
hogging this ask to share my opinions on the barbie film which i had promised i'd do!
i only watched it once so obv i'm gonna catch a lot more in subsequent viewings and might even change my opinion on some things but
at first view what impressed me the most were the production and costume designs! the barbieland set and the barbies' outfits are really impressive and fucking awesome, they helped a lot in the immersive nature of the film and to sell the premise. the commitment to the rules of the doll universe was fucking stellar, the walking on tiptoes, her floating down to the car, there not being any actual liquids or food
and like okay. the plot. phewwwwwww. it's metamodern and i get it, and while it certainly was Extremely self-aware it often seemed like said self-awareness was being actualized by someone with a very specific, not necessarily privileged but oftentimes limited, worldview. for example, america ferrera's speech was great but didn't it feel like feminism 101? i thought the film was going to commit to some more radicalized notions, i guess lmao
but i don't want to judge it based on my expectations, let me judge it for what it is! something that i have to give it credit for is the critic given to barbie dolls themselves, especially the ones from sasha (maybe it's bc i'm zillenial so i've been her lol). i wasn't expecting the film to open that discussion and that gave it a turning point that i think was much needed. what i will say is that i think too much importance was given to the historical significance of barbies lol ("you set feminism back 50 years you fascist!") but i think that's a given since the movie was produced by mattel iself
i would love to analyze this film for what it is and not mostly for the message it's trying to send (bc i'm The Biggest believer that stories don't have to have a moral lesson, and in fact are probably better when they don't tbh) but it truly only works when you take into account the discussion it's trying to sparkle. and good for it! it did its job, people are fucking talking about it lmao. we're in a weird cultural moment where people like me think the film would've benefitted from being more radical (by GOD not in a terf sense, terfs can die and burn lmao, but in a let's free the nipple and grow our body hair and raise boys and girls the same way sense) but conservative people think it IS radical for supposedly sending the message that women should hate men (???)
on that note. i'm Definitely not siding with the conservatives here (my god please god Definitely not) but the film kept hammering on the fact that we should fight the patriarchy (and i've seen people saying that you're missing the point if you don't realize that the film is us vs patriarchy and not women vs men) but i think that's giving too much credit to the film vnfjvnfjv like i said, it's feminism 101, so in the end the barbies still take back barbieland, no? they go back to the beginning of the film, this idyllic world where one gender rules all and occupies all of the space. and like I GET IT, it's a comment on how the opposite is what happens in our world, i'm not stupid lol. i'm just angry that the dichotomy IS there, is all i'm saying. the film criticizes the things women are associated with and the expecations we have to live with, but also plays straight into it when this world governed by women is all pink and glamourous and perfect lmao does my critic make sense? that particular message of the film feels very girl power 2014 tumblr core
speaking of which, anyone else not happy at all with the capitalist recuperation this film brought about? "let girls dress in pink and wear barbie merch to this blockbuster multimillion dollar movie!! this is our moment, if men can cosplay to watch mcu films then the girls can have this one!!" oh honey. "movies for girls" and "movies for men" much? there goes the polarization again. AND the commodification of something that Should be counterculture. thanks for contributing to both <3
all of this not to say that i didn't like the movie! i did it was great i laughed a lot! sometimes its self-awareness bothered me for how "biased" it was but most of the time the film really benefitted from it in its comedy! depression barbie made me HOWL lmao, and the kens serenating the barbies with an acoustic guitar gave me war flashbacks bc literally what woman hasn't been there, stuff like that
and. it did make me cry lol. the final scene when barbie is talking to ruth handler and finally understands what it's like to be human and more specifically a human woman really touched me bc it was a commentary on the personal. it wasn't getting at broad social subjects, it was all about internal conflict and acceptance. reminded me of the epiphany scene from soul and the parking lot scene from everything everywhere all at once. i feel like metamodern films rely a lot on these self-referential and social commentaries, but are also slowly walking towards looking inwards a lot, and that means so much to me. the examples i've observed so far in cinema are fucking beautiful, i hope it's here to stay

how r so good at writing everytime i read something of urs i look at ur username and like go Ah This Looks Familiar and i discover that ive already read some of ur other stuff. whats ur secret. would love to know about ur Inspirations and such if u dont mind
hi!!!!! thank u so much for saying all of this and for all of your comments, they are all so sweet and make me really happy. i've been sitting on this ask because i really don't know how to answer it!!
i certainly don't have a "secret" to writing, tho if i did it might be the age old advice of writing a fuckton and reading a fuckton more, bc i think those are the two most valuable things to my writing... i've been writing for a very long time but only got into fic writing recently, and i find that it's really useful just to have a loooot of practice writing because it helps me learn my strengths and flaws and to iron out the kinks in my writing and to take my writing less seriously and allow myself to be experimental and have fun, which sounds a little woo-woo, but i truly think if you want to improve as a writer (which i know i do and it sounds like you do), finding the type of writing you enjoy doing and doing a LOT of it is extremely valuable. for me it was very important to learn the ways that perfectionism has been holding me back and trying to work on that, because just like any skill, it's vital to practice in writing to improve, and my perfectionism was stopping me before i even started a lot of the time. working on letting go of that was really useful bc even tho i still struggle with it a LOT, it goes a really long way to just commit to writing and enjoying something and seeing what happens and not being super attached to how the final product comes out.
as far as inspirations go, i definitely don't read as much as i'd like to, but when i do, i read a lot of literary short stories, which i think are really useful for learning how to maintain tension and focus on prose in shorter works. but i try to read pretty broadly across genres bc i think it gives me a more well rounded sense of how vastly different writing can be? it's hard to point to any specific writers i'd consider influential tho recently i'd probably name mariana enriquez, marilynne robinson, aimee bender, and gabriel garcia marquez as far as writers who really shaped the way i read and write... as far as fic writers go i think @letteredlettered, @shiftylinguini, and @firethesound really shaped my views of harry and draco and the tones i like to take up in fic. i also just watch a lot of horror movies and that has influenced my writing a lot too? i think film in general influences my writing more than i once realized
i have found myself often either intentionally or unintentionally emulating the prose styles of my favorite writers, and i think that has been useful for me - it's helped me sort of find my own voice, pick up things i like, put down things i don't like, and i think all writers' styles are sort of an amalgamation of their influences so i dont think it hurts to try things out and see what sticks. i've been writing fic for almost a year now and i think there's a pretty broad range of styles within my fics, which is all a result of me testing out new things and seeing which styles fit certain tones/topics!
but also!! i think doing what youre doing and talking to writers about their interests/methods/influences has helped me a LOT! that's something ive found super valuable within fandom - talking to people about their writing and learning about their techniques has been suuuper useful in figuring out what works and doesnt work for me!
dude idk if i really answered your questions at all?? let me know if you want me to ramble more about any of this (as if it's not already super long) and ur also welcome to hit me up on discord crow#5501 if you ever wanna chat! thank u again for being so sweet!!

My parents are in their mid to late 40s who are big media geeks, took me to every LotR film premiere when I was a little tot etc. Not "puritan nerds", but somewhat concerned with faithful adaptions of books and comics (LOVED the Sandman despite having a few questions about how certain stories were changed). They're watching the rings of power as it comes out, and while they don't think it's AMAZING, they also don't think it's bad at all either and are curious to see how the story plays out before they pass any judgment on it. tl;dr show is fine to anyone other than raging gatekeepers and racists lol
I'm seeing a lot of Tolkien scholars that happen to also be people of color saying they're "cautiously optimistic" as it's really too early to tell, and that's about my view on it too. Nothing so terrible. Too early to tell really anything else. It's alright so far. There's some valid problems with it (stunt actors shouldn't be getting hurt, yes some of the lore is changed) and some things that I think would be difficult to improve (outside of telling the folks putting on offensive accents to just speak normally or to use a different accent- this would work seamlessly in the US because Americans largely can't tell the difference between the various UK accents anyway lmao) but I don't think any one work is without its flaws and tbf the PJ movies had their fair share as well.
I'm not seeing "bad costuming" - it looks somewhat lower budget than the LOTR films maybe which is a shame considering the higher production costs but it doesn't look objectively bad. The cast isn't going to look anything like the movies sorry Amazon does not own the rights to anything New Line Cinema put out so Elrond and Galadriel were never going to look like Weaving or Blanchett. I wish the male elves had longer hair but, again, it is technically "long" (except Finrod what did they do to you) (like it looks fine I just wish it was longer) (and our black elf Arondir has a buzz cut which I'm sad about bc there is so much POTENTIAL) and some do have longer hair like what we've come to expect. The CGI seems better than the Hobbit but it still doesn't come anywhere close to the practical effects of LOTR but I'm also a huge practical fanboy so there's that bias to consider. The stage seemed to be nicely set in the first episode and unfortunately due to the storm and my basement flooding and now a dog show in the morning I don't have time to watch the second but...
Yeah. I think "cautiously optimistic" is a good way of putting it.

2. What was the film that scared you the most? There are a few, actually, but I think 28 Weeks Later takes the cake, considering how much it affected me irl. I mean, I never even watched it (still haven't), but the clips I've seen + the plot description was enough to make me: a) be afraid of the English countryside and its small villages. Like. the way they look? this was because of that one scene where main guy runs away from the horde of zombies (I mean "infected"). and since they get to London later in the movie, my view of London ALSO got tainted... which is saying something, since I was a bit of an anglophile back then. Just. the entirety of Great Britain was something I didn't even wanna THINK about for a couple years at least. all because 28 Weeks Later takes place there. I've gotten over it NOW, but I'm not exaggerating about the sheer amount of time that took me, lmao b) be afraid of disturbed's song "down with the sickness". why? because I watched a fanvideo someone had made about the movie with that song playing over the clips. this sucks because I loved that song back then too, but for a while I just couldn't listen to it, cause it'd make me all anxious, lol. (good song choice tho because the tension and rage in that song fits so well, it seems to be almost made for this movie) Here's some honorable mentions of movies that scared me a lot, also on a more.... profound level: The Mist, Dawn of the Dead (1978), Evil Dead (the original, obviously)
4. What film is TERRIBLE but you love it?: BIRDEEEEMIC, DON'T YOU FUCKIN' FORGEEEEET IT!!!! I would say The Room too, but in its defense, The Room at least had some production value, whereas Birdemic..... uh. you know.
5. What is the film you once loved but watching it now you realize it’s terrible? Hmm, tough one. Overall, I don't really subscribe to that whole argument that some movies don't "age well". I'm like who cares? Everything made this year is also gonna look laughable in the future, so please Sit Down, lol. I think the only movie I can think of that comes close in this case though, is the Dungeons and Dragons-movie from 2000. I remember thinking it was so cool back when we first watched it, but years later when I saw a review of it, I realized how dorky it was. I used to be scared of Jeremy irons' character when I was a kid (kind of in a "Noooo why is he so weird?? I don't like it :(" way), until I saw the review later in life and realized he wasn't scary at all, just funny
7. What is the sexiest film? The Hitcher (1986) of course!! (irdk)
11. What’s the worst film you’ve ever seen? It would be low-hanging fruit to pick a movie that was meant to be bad, so I won't choose Sand Sharks for this one. No, I feel like trashing Sweden's equivalent to Lars von Trier in terms of ego and pretentiousness; Ruben Östlundh... You see, his movie The Square wasn't very good. Sure, it LOOKED good, but other than that, it was just a big old nothing of a movie. Just like Michael Bay's Transformers-movies, the pretty visuals serve to distract the viewer from the fact that beneath it, the movie has no substance; no message. The lights are on but no one's home. The Square had nothing but unlikeable characters who's motivations were unclear and who's relationships never felt believable. There were so many red herrings put in place that made you think they had significance, but ended up amounting to nothing. Like-- imagine a movie built up of moments like that? That's The Square. Pretty much nothing gets resolved, and when something happens that makes you think that "OMG that's messed up! this has gotta be the turning point that delivers the movie's message!", then I'm sorry to say this but nope. Not even big, supposedly significant scenes wind up leading anywhere. Main guy accidentally pushes a kid down a staircase bc the kid was annoying him? Whooaaa what's gonna happen? Will the kid die? Will main guy apologize?? Answer: after fighting with himself abt it for a while, main guy decides to go to the kid's place and apologize (kid survived), but oops the kid and his parents have moved away now. That's literally where that plot point ends. Not even the movie's Big Moment selling point; the ape-man scene, truly leads anywhere, which is too bad because that scene was easily the most interesting one. But nah, the guy just acts like an ape, making everyone laugh at first until he starts to push the limits and the audience gets more uncomfortable. Were lessons learned? Was there a point? DOESN'T MATTER LOL OH RUBEN ÖSTLUNDH U SO QUIRKY 🥴 So yeah. I was NOT impressed, lol

Movie a thief in the night

#Movie a thief in the night movie#
I have taken this experience to fulfill a purpose, I am nearing my licensure as a Psychologist specializing in childhood trauma.Īs some other comments show, this movie might scare you, when you're a little child. I no longer fear the future, I have come to terms with the fear injected into it's members by the church. I actually began to believe this, it was my brother who reminded me, that this cultic philosophy actually happened. I once explained to a psychiatrist this movie and the belief system of the church and family. For years, I lived under the delusional affects of the church and fear of being forgotten by Christ. This movie, the church, and a volatile neglectful upbringing, lead to severe paranoia towards the future. It wasn't just the movie, but it was also the philosophy that engulfs so many "christians" about the "mark of the beast"and the rapture. This movie terrified my brother and I and shaped how we viewed the world with distrust. I was of the tender age of 6, my brother 4, then again when I was 8 my brother 6. I saw this movie twice through a pentecostal church my family attended in Nanaimo BC in the 1970's. I think I'm the only person in history to make that observation. It even has the SAME EXACT score of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I hate to admit it, but I still thoroughly enjoy watching this. The intriguing adventures of Patty and her journey throughout the tribulation (and two of the film's three sequels) tells her remarkable story of unbelief and ultimately damnation. What used to terrify me in junior high now makes me laugh. The film's premise is grounded in Pre-Millenial, pre-Tribulation eschatalogy, believing that Christ comes once for the secret taking of the true church, and then comes again at the end of the seven years of hell on earth. Instead of taking us to the dramatic scenes of this "post-rapture" tribulation, we sit in the living room, hearing about it on the news because the filmmakers can't afford to show it. What I love most about this genre is its incredible attention to detail, sitting in a living room. Jenkins would shake the world of the Christian subculture (and make millions in the process) with the LEFT BEHIND books, MARK IV Pictures, the Christian film distribution company of the Billy Graham evangelistic association, gave us this masterwork. And while I am able to keep an open mind about the overall subject of the film, from a critical and objective perspective I have to rate it as slightly below average. In short, if a person can get beyond some of the peculiarities I mentioned earlier, they might find this film interesting in its own way. Even so, this film created a stir within its targeted audience and resulted in 3 sequels: "A Distant Thunder", "Image of the Beast" and "The Prodigal Planet". Additionally, as the hairstyles and clothes clearly indicate, it is definitely dated to a time-period (late 60's & early 70's) which may not appeal to a more modern audience. Because of that, the acting is very basic and the dialogue will probably strike many as being a bit corny. Likewise, it is a low-budget production geared more for an evangelical outreach than for general entertainment purposes. As such, there may be many people who may not understand or appreciate this type of film. Now, as I stated earlier, this film follows a controversial belief of a certain segment of the Christian faith. On the other hand, her other two friends, "Diane Bradford" (Maryann Rachford) and her new husband "Jerry Bradford" (Thom Rachford) were also left behind and like Patty, they are now forced to deal with another fundamentalist event known as the "tribulation" which is essentially a hell on earth. So has her friend, "Jenny" (Colleen Niday). However, her husband, "Jim Wright" (Mike Niday) was recently converted and he has disappeared. In that regard, "Patty Myers" (Patty Dunning) is one of the many who is not taken up into heaven because she is not a Christian. This film follows the belief of certain fundamentalist Christians that an event known as the "rapture" will take place soon which will cause all true believers to disappear from the earth all at once.

I’m just really confused as to where this idea that Zuko is gaycoded came from. Like people are allowed to have that headcanon but I don’t understand where people are coming from when they try and claim that he was undisputedly gaycoded and trying to deny it is homophobic when he’s only ever shown romantic interest in women.
I made a pretty long post on the topic a while back, but the ultimate gist of it is this: there are a lot of elements of Zuko's status as an abuse victim and trauma survivor that resonate with queer folks. This is understandable and completely fine! However, there are some parts of the fandom who have taken that to the other extreme and will now insist that those elements are uniquely queer, and that they can only be read as some sort of veiled gay/coming out narrative, even though that doesn't make much sense since there is no part of Zuko's narrative which is unique to any sort of queer experience.
I think the problem really does stem from two things being conflated--Zuko's history of abuse and trauma, and trauma&abuse being something a lot of queer people have experienced. I suspect it goes something like 'I see a lot of myself in Zuko, and I was abused for being gay, therefore Zuko must be gay too in order to have had similar experiences.' This can then lead to feeling dismissed or invalidated when other people point out that those experiences are not unique to being queer--but on the flip side, abuse victims and trauma survivors whose abuse&trauma do not stem from queerness (even if they are queer themselves) can feel invalidated and dismissed by the implication that their trauma must be connected to their queerness or it isn't valid.
This is also where the 'people don't actually know what gay coded means' part comes in, and I realize now that I didn't actually get into what gay coding (and queer coding in general) actually means, since I was so hung up on pointing out how Zuko doesn't really fit the mold. (And the few elements that exist which could be said to count are because of the 'villains historically get queer coded bc Hays Code era' thing and mostly occur in Book 1, not because of how he acts as an abuse&trauma survivor.)
Under a cut because I kind of go on a tangent about gay/queer coding, but I swear I get back to the point eventually.
Queer coding (and it is notable that, with respect to Zuko, it is almost always framed as 'he couldn't possibly be attracted to girls', rather than 'he could be attracted to boys as well as girls' in these discussions, for... no real discernible reason, but I'll get into that in a bit) is the practice of giving characters 'stereotypically queer' traits and characteristics to 'slide them under the radar' in an era where having explicitly queer characters on screen was not allowed, unless they were evil or otherwise narratively punished for their queerness. (See: the extant history of villains being queer-coded, because if they were Evil then it was ok to make them 'look gay', since the story wasn't going to be rewarding their queerness and making audiences think it was in any way OK.) This is thanks to the Motion Picture Production Code (colloquially and more popularly known as the Hays Code), which was a set of guidelines which movies coming out of any major studio had to adhere to in order to be slated for public release and lasted from the early 1930s until it was finally abandoned in the late 60s.
The Hays Code essentially existed to ensure that the content of major motion pictures would not 'lower the moral standards' of the viewing public. It didn't just have to do with queerness--cursing was heavily monitored, sex outside of marriage was not allowed to be seen as desirable or tittilating, miscegenation was not allowed (most specifically interracial relationships between black and white people), criminals had to be punished lest the audience think that it was ok to be gay and do crime, etc. Since same-sex relations fell under 'sexual perversion', they could not be shown unless the 'perversion' were punished in some way. (This is also the origin of the Bury Your Gays trope, another term that is widely misunderstood and misapplied today.) To get around this, queer coding became the practice by which movies and television could depict queer people but not really, and it also became customary to give villains this coding even more overtly, since they would get punished by the end of the film or series anyway and there was nothing to lose by making them flamboyant and racy/overly sexual/promiscuous.
Over time, this practice of making villains flamboyant, sexually aggressive, &etc became somewhat separated from its origins in queer coding, by which I mean that these traits and tropes became the go-to for villains even when the creator had no real intention of making them seem queer. This is how you generally get unintentional queer-coding--because these traits that have been given to villains for decades have roots in coding, but people tend to go right to them when it comes to creating their villains without considering where they came from.
Even after the Hays Code was abandoned, the sentiments and practices remained. Having queer characters who weren't punished by the narrative for being queer was exceptionally rare, and it really isn't until the last fifteen or so years that we've seen any pushback against that. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is famous for being one of the first shows on primetime television to feature an explicitly gay relationship on-screen, and that relationship ended in one of the most painful instances of Bury Your Gays that I have ever personally witnessed. (Something that, fourteen years later, The 100 would visually and textually reference with Lexa's death. Getting hit by a bullet intended for someone else after a night of finally getting to be happy and have sex with her s/o? It wasn't remotely subtle. I don't even like Clexa, but that was incredibly rough to witness.)
However, bringing this back to Zuko, he really doesn't fit the criteria for queer coding for a number of reasons. First of all, no one behind the scenes (mostly a bunch of cishet men) was at all intending to include queer rep in the show. This wasn't a case where they were like 'well, we really wanted to make Zuko gay, but we couldn't get that past the censors, so here are a few winks and a nudge', because it just wasn't on their radar at all. Which makes sense--it wasn't on most radars in that era of children's programming. This isn't really an indictment, it's just a fact of the time--in the mid/late 00s, no one was really thinking about putting queer characters in children's cartoons. People were barely beginning to include them in more teen- and adult-oriented television and movies. It just wasn't something that a couple of straight men, who were creating a fantasy series aimed at young kids, were going to think about.
What few instances you can point to from the series where Zuko might be considered to exhibit coding largely happen in Book 1, when he was a villain, because the writers were drawing from typically villainous traits that had historically come from queer coding villains and had since passed into common usage as villainous traits. But they weren't done with any intention of making it seem like Zuko might be attracted to boys.
And, again, what people actually point to as 'evidence' of Zuko being queer-coded--his awkwardness on his date with Jin and his confrontation with Ozai being the big ones I can think of off the top of my head--are actually just... traits that come from his history of trauma and abuse.
As I said in that old post:
making [zuko’s confrontation of ozai] about zuko being gay and rejecting ozai’s homophobia, rather than zuko learning fundamental truths about the world and about his home and about how there was something deeply wrong with his nation that needed to be fixed in order for the world to heal (and, no, ‘homophobia’ is not the answer to ‘what is wrong with the fire nation’, i’m still fucking pissed at bryke about that), misses the entire point of his character arc. this is the culmination of zuko realizing that he should never have had to earn his father’s love, because that should have been unconditional from the start. this is zuko realizing that he was not at fault for his father’s abuse--that speaking out of turn in a war meeting in no way justified fighting a duel with a child.
is that first realization (that a parent’s love should be unconditional, and if it isn’t, then that is the parent’s fault and not the child’s) something that queer kids in homophobic households/families can relate to? of course it is. but it’s also something that every other abused kid, straight kids and even queer kids who were abused for other reasons before they even knew they were anything other than cishet, can relate to as well. in that respect, it is not a uniquely queer experience, nor is it a uniquely queer story, and zuko not being attracted to girls (which is what a lot of it seems to boil down to, at the end of the day--cutting down zuko’s potential ships so that only zukka and a few far more niche ships are left standing) is not necessary to his character arc. nor does it particularly make sense.
And, regarding his date with Jin:
(and before anyone brings up his date with jin--a) he enjoyed it when she kissed him, and b) he was a traumatized, abused child going out on a first date. of course he was fucking awkward. have you ever met a teenage boy????)
Zuko is socially awkward and maladjusted because he was abused by his father as a child and has trouble relating to people as a result. He was heavily traumatized and brutally physically injured as a teenager, and it took him years to begin to truly recover from the scars that left on his psyche (and it's highly likely, despite the strides he made in canon, that he has a long way to go, post series; it's such a pity that we never got any continuation comics >.>). He was not abused for being gay or queer--he was abused because his father believed he was weak, and part of Zuko's journey was realizing that his father's perception of strength was flawed at its core. That his entire nation had rotted from the inside out, and the regime needed to be changed in order for the world--including his people--to begin to heal.
That could be commingled with a coming out narrative, which is completely fine for headcanons (although I personally prefer not to, because, again, we have more than enough queer trauma already), but it simply doesn't exist in canon. Zuko was not abused or traumatized for being queer, and his confrontation with Ozai was not about him coming out or realizing any fundamental truth about himself--it was about realizing something fundamental about his father and his nation, and making the choice to leave them behind so that he could help the Avatar grow stronger and force things to change when he got back.
TL;DR: at the end of the day, none of the traits, scenes, or behavior Zuko exhibits which shippers tend to use to claim he was gay-coded are actually evidence of coding--they aren't uniquely queer experiences, as they stem from abuse that was not related in any way to his sexuality, and they are experiences that any kid who suffered similar abuse or trauma could recognize and resonate with. (Including straight kids, and queer kids who were abused for any reason other than their identity.) And, finally, Zuko can be queer without erasing or invalidating his canon attraction to girls, and it's endlessly frustrating that the 'Zuko is gay-coded' crowd refuses to acknowledge that.

Constant Pining [Mickey Altieri x reader]
A/N: part two because i think the last one deserves a follow up :> For this one, I decided to play with the fact that Mickey is a film student, so I kind of figured he would use it to his advantage. btw tho this feels super choppy and cheesy in the bad way so idk how to feel ab it:’) pls lmk what you guys think bc i might rewrite it and cut half of this out
Word Count: 3,425
Warnings: None, this is like... super fluffy
---
It had been two weeks since the party and it was driving Mickey insane. He wasn’t sure what was worse. The fact that life carried on as usual or the fact that you were completely unfazed. He would have preferred if you were all over him or, hell, if you were avoiding him.
Because then he would know how you feel.
But he didn’t. The poor guy hadn’t the slightest clue. Life went on nonetheless. Some days he was able to sit next to you in Psychology (if Halley didn’t try kicking him out of her seat) and the two of you were normal during friend settings. But you never showed up to another party.
Mickey gnawed at his pencil. It was whittled down to practically nothing. He was supposed to be focused on a project that he and Randy were assigned in Film Theory but instead... You were on his mind.
“Can you stop eating that pencil and quit thinking about (Y/n)!” Randy threw a small notebook at Mickey’s head. Mickey snapped out of his daze and easily dodged it. “We need to work on this shit together. I don’t need (Y/n) clouding my camera man’s mind.”
“I’m not even-”
“Save it. You’ve been making the same face for two weeks straight now. It’s the (Y/n)-face. Sid and I coined it.”
Mickey muttered a curse word under his breath and reached for the notebook that was thrown at him. It was Randy’s film book. He flipped through some pages. It was filled with notes for class and film-analysis. Half of the analyses weren’t even assigned for class.
“What are we doing for this again?” Mickey rolled his eyes and threw the notebook onto a table. He propped up his feet and leaned back in his chair.
The two boys were in a conference room of the film school. A chalkboard had been dirtied with Randy’s ideas for their film project while Mickey was mentally vacant for the time being. The project was to make a movie, each group was assigned a different genre. They were content with being partners, seeing as Randy had the ideas and Mickey had a knack for cinematography.
“We were assigned to do a documentary.”
“Fucking lame... Everyone else got cool shit. I heard Terry Pusher was assigned fantasy... Fucking fantasy.”
“I know, hell I’d take a love story over this shit,” Randy threw the piece of chalk at the board.
Mickey paused and sat up. His expression was twisted as if he were onto something.
“Wait... say that again...”
“I’d take a love story over this shit?” Randy tilted his head.
Mickey stood to his feet and pointed at his geeky friend, an excited expression was evident.
“Exactly.”
The sea of students stormed past you. Your final class of the day ended early so you were more than eager to get back to your dorm. Your roommate was gone for the weekend so hopefully some quiet would get your mind off of Mickey.
The events of the party had been bouncing around the walls of your mind ever since it happened. A part of you thanked Halley for stepping in when she did and a part of you cursed her for it.
You couldn’t fathom dating Mickey. It was unheard of. New. Exhilarating. He was probably one of the hottest guys on campus and he had his hands on your waist.
Sure, he was a total nerd when it came to movies, especially for Tarantino films, and you could listen to his rants for hours, but the thought of him wanting you made your heart skip a beat. If he reciprocated any sort of feelings you’d be sent into cardiac arrest. Did he like you? Was that even possible?
He could have anyone at this school. He knew it, too. But it was possible he could choose you.
Before you were able to expand on that thought, a camera was shoved into your face.
“And here we have the wonderful, the amazing, the magnificently stunning (Y/n)!” Mickey’s voice imitated a sports announcer.
His sudden appearance was enough to make your cheeks go ablaze.
“What are you doing?” You winced and shielded your face.
Randy appeared behind Mickey, “Film project, you’re a part of it!”
“Puh-lease, if anything, they are the star of the film, Meeks!”
You continued to walk to your dorm in hopes of avoiding the nerds but in all honesty, you were smiling like an idiot.
“What’s it about?” You asked.
Mickey put the camera down for a second and eyed Randy. Luckily, he knew exactly what to say, or rather, what not to say.
“We’re making a documentary. We’re following around a few students, and you’re one of them. Will you watch it when it comes out?”
“Of course,” You grinned. “Just... don’t follow me everywhere with that thing.”
And follow you, they did.
The very next morning you opened your door to Mickey holding up the blocky piece of tech. He was grinning behind the lens, which forced you to do the same. But you made it a point to shove the camera away.
This went on for weeks. Mickey would ambush you with his camera everywhere. Meaning that you two were spending more time together. It didn’t matter if you were in the cafeteria or spending the night with your friends. He always managed to film little tidbits of you.
At first, you would push the camera away or hide your face behind a nearby pillow.
Then you and Mickey started to hang alone together more often. You found yourself seeking out time with him. Mickey walked you to classes (still filming you with the camera but you didn’t push it away anymore; you just ignored it), he visited you at work and stopped by your dorm frequently.
Eventually, he had the courage to trap you into a date.
“Why are you covering my face, Mickey? I know where the cafeteria is...” You groaned, aimlessly walking forward.
“That’s not where we’re eating today.”
“You had no reason to make that sound threatening, Micks... You suck at surprises.”
“Yeah, yeah, you can open your eyes now.”
You opened your eyes to a sprawled out assortment of food on a picnic blanket.
It was a typical picnic blanket sat under one of the largest trees on campus. It was wide and comfortable. Mickey thought to bring plenty of drinks too. The look on your face filled him with glee as you studied the setting in front of you.
Just last week both of you were talking about your favorite underrated scenes in a romance movie. His answer was the kissing scene in Titanic, but you argued that wasn’t underrated. Your answer was the picnic scene in Armageddon.
Mickey managed to make it come true. If it were sunset, it would have hit the nail on the head.
“Oh my...”
“Do you like it?” Mickey jumped into your line of vision, he looked hopeful. “You said you’ve never been to a picnic before when you mentioned Armageddon and... well that’s just a part of the American dream so I figured- ‘Hey, they shouldn’t miss out on something so fun and peaceful’ so... I made it happen.”
Mickey’s rambling had you smiling wide. Underneath that smooth exterior, he was a nervous wreck around you.
“Thanks, Micks...”
The food was delicious. You guys talked amongst the meal and the conversation never stopped. Hours passed but you guys continued to laugh and talk. You were having the time of your life. Mickey brought your favorite fruits and snacks, but best of all, animal crackers. You held up the bag excitedly.
“Like from the movie!” You cheered.
Mickey leaned forward to grab a cracker but you leaned back, smiling mischievously. You loved teasing him.
He furrowed his eyebrows and went to grab again but you leaned back even further. Mickey paused, chuckling, and you thought you won. You reached your hand in to grab a cracker yourself and instead, you felt his body collide into yours.
You yelped in surprise and fell on your back. The Animal Crackers flew across the blanket and Mickey groaned in defeat.
“Now look at what you did...” You laughed.
You guys were side-by-side laying on your backs, staring at each other. The blanket was soft. If you weren’t so giddy, you could have fallen asleep right there. Mickey’s body heat enhanced your comfort, the need to lean into him was excessive.
You giggled at the man, biting the nail on your index finger. Mickey stared back at you, he looked pleased.
“What?”
He shrugged and continued to stare. You faced your head forward to look up at the branches of a tree above you.
The shade kept you both cool from the sun. Rays of sunshine illuminated your skin, the eccentric shadow of leaves were printed on your face. A breeze flew by, causing your baby hairs to wave in the wind. Mickey couldn’t pull his eyes away.
“Baby-” You said, snapping him out of his trance- “Do you think it’s possible that anyone else in the world is doing this very same thing at this very same moment?”
You slowly turned your eyes back to Mickey, hoping he’d catch on. His toothy grin spread across his cheeks. He thought back to the movie line, hoping to get it right.
“I hope so...” He mumbled but you heard it perfectly. “Otherwise... What the hell are we trying to save?”
His face was an inch away from yours. You could feel his breath hitting your face. It was sweet. It smelled of the strawberries you shared moments before.
A few strands of his hair hung in front of his eyes, separate from the rest of his slicked-back locks. His large brown eyes were looking at you sincerely. They were inviting you in. Mickey’s lips twitched upward as if he were tempted to make a move.
But he didn’t.
You wanted to reach toward his face and pull him closer. You wanted to feel his lips meld into yours, allow the moment to overtake you. You wanted to feel his unshaven face press against yours and tickle your cheeks. You wanted to feel his hand wrap around your own. You wanted to feel him, to touch him.
But you didn’t.
Two weeks later Randy and Mickey announced their documentary was done. The finished product was ready to be viewed. You were invited to come to see it.
During those two weeks, you spent time wondering how you could finally make a move. You were sick of this. You wanted this to end and to have a new beginning. You were sure that Mickey had feelings for you. It had to be true. You needed a leap of faith.
On the other hand, Mickey spent the same amount of time wondering where he was going wrong. Why couldn’t he pluck up the courage to kiss you? Making the first move always worked well for him. Why couldn’t he do it now? More than anything, he hoped that perhaps this documentary will give you an idea of his feelings. It had to.
So here you were, nervously fiddling with a blocky device in your jacket pocket, avoiding the eyes of Mickey, who sat on a stool in front of Sidney’s TV. She opted that they show their documentary in her and Halley’s room of their sorority house. Surprisingly, they were the only ones with a good enough TV.
Mickey couldn’t pull his eyes off of you. It became a nervous habit. He wanted to know what you were thinking almost 24/7, he was beyond pissed that he wasn’t a telepath.
“Alright alright alright...” Randy strolled up to the screen. “Is everyone here? Does everyone have their snacks and their drinks? You all need to enjoy this to the fullest extent so snacks are a must.”
Everyone glanced at one another, drink and popcorn in hand. You glanced back to see Sidney all over her boyfriend Derek on the couch. You gave a half-grin, wishing that could be you and Mickey. Halley sat on the opposite end of the couch, happily munching on popcorn.
“Well... without further ado-” Mickey began.
“Wait isn’t this a documentary? This better not be boring as hell...” Halley lifted her hand and we all nodded in agreement.
“Trust me, guys, this is good stuff. Probably our best yet,” Randy reassured us. “I’m going to play it now...”
We fell silent as Randy placed a tape inside of the VHS. He then turned out the lights as the intro began. Randy’s voice came through the TV.
“Love...” Tidbits of students on campus flashed across the screen. “What is love? ...And no, I don’t mean The Haddaway song.”
A few chuckles sounded around the room. Mickey held his glance on you still.
“Falling in love is one of the most complex things a human can do... The psychology is even more complex. Certain chemicals are released that explain those butterflies in your stomach or why you get sweaty palms around your crush. Well, many scientists believe that humans are wired to fall in love...” Randy’s voice faded along with the screen.
The sound of talking college students came through and the camera was poised onto Derek in the cafeteria.
“What do you love about Sid, Derek?” Mickey said through the TV.
The camera was far too close to Derek’s face, who looked insanely annoyed.
“Bug off-”
“Just answer the question.”
Derek thought for a moment, then smiled, “Her smile and eyes. I can’t choose one. They just... go hand in hand. They’re gentle, kind, sweet... Like her.”
A chorus of ooh’s and aw’s rang throughout the room and we threw popcorn kernels at Derek. Both he and Sidney were blushing profusely.
The next clip was of Halley walking on the sidewalk. You could hear Mickey again.
“Ms. Halley, please explain to us what you are doing right now.”
“I am going on a date, which I do not need you two dorks coming with me-” Halley shoved the camera away and the camera didn’t see her again.
There were a few more scenes like this, the guys asking random couples on campus what they love about one another.
You were never asked anything while you were filmed, so you were confused, to say that the least. What was your role during this?
At times, you would lock eyes with Mickey. He looked frazzled but stared at you all the same.
Randy posed another question to each of the couples, “How long does it take for someone to fall in love?” The screen was black as you heard the answers,
“Weeks-”
“Months, maybe six?”
“Years,” Someone said.
And you appeared on the TV.
It was when Mickey first filmed you. There was more than one clip of you, too, each a few seconds long. The first five contained you shying away from the camera but after that, you could see yourself growing more comfortable around him. You were never looking at the lens but always at the cameraman.
The screen went black once more and another question was asked, “What’s your ideal love story?”
“Something like a Nicholas Sparks book. Tragic... yet romantic.”
“If we hated each other at first, but then we learned to love. The buildup is fantastic.”
“Childhood friends turned to lovers. Something about that constant pining has me reeling...”
You snapped your eyes towards Mickey. You couldn’t read the expression on his face. You looked back at the screen to see yourself once more.
“Micks... come on and watch this movie-” You were sat on a couch with a bowl of popcorn. You shoved a handful into your mouth when suddenly you noticed the camera sitting in front of you, “You left your camera in here! ...Hey- are you filming me?” You lifted the device to your face and stuck out your tongue.
You could hear Mickey chuckle in the background.
Another clip played of Mickey and you sitting on the floor. It was a different day, you guys were laughing hysterically over something. You’ve never seen Mickey so happy.
More and more clips of questions and answers paired with you played. It was matched together perfectly. Realization dawned on you. Was this a confession from Mickey?
Mickey’s sweet voice played once more. But this wasn’t for any of the couples. He was sat on the couch, asking you.
“Think about a cheesy but underrated romance, okay? What is your favorite romantic scene from that movie?”
You were only a few inches away from him, head rested on your hand on the backboard of his bed.
“I’ll go first, I think the kiss during Titanic is spectacular.”
“It’s good but it’s not underrated Micks.”
“Alright, then what’s your choice?”
“...Armageddon. The picnic scene. I’ve never been on a picnic so something like that just seems so... tranquil.”
“You’ve never been to a picnic?”
“Yep... is that weird?”
“Completely and utterly, (Y/n).”
You laughed loudly in the documentary. The next scene was of Mickey setting the camera up someplace. He looked nervous. When he stepped away from the camera, it was a perfect angle to film the picnic he set up for you.
You knew the rest. The next couple of minutes showed your guys’ picnic together. Including the movie quote.
The end of the film was nearing, and Mickey’s anxiety was through the roof. It was far from romantic but once his project stopped playing he was going to confess to you. He was going to confess in front of all of his friends, for you. Just a few minutes left and he was going to do it.
And then you left.
Mickey finished the quote from the movie and you left instantly. Mickey’s jaw dropped as he stared at his friends. They looked equally confused.
“Go after them, dude!” Randy yelled.
It took a while but eventually, Mickey found you. You were on the porch of the sorority house, leaning against the railing and staring at the sunset. There was a cool breeze and parts of your hair waved in the wind. You had your arms wrapped around your body, pulling your jacket close. Mickey could see the orange glow illuminating your face when he joined your side.
“Are you okay?”
You didn’t look at him. His heart dropped. He messed up.
“Listen, I didn’t mean to-”
You shushed him. He fell silent.
“Come here... close your eyes... Step up... No peeking”
“I’m not...”
You pulled on his arm and forced him to stand behind you. You guided him to stand on the lower bar of the railing with you, his body nearly wrapped around yours. He stumbled a bit but he followed your movement blindly. The lack of distance between you two had him trembling.
“Just a sec...” You whispered and pulled a walkman out of your pocket. “I wanted to get this right...” You said and pressed play.
The instrumental of My Heart Will Go On began to play and Mickey barked out a laugh.
“What in the world-”
“Put your hands on my waist, Micks,”  You grabbed his hands. “You can open your eyes now.”
Just like the movie, Mickey thought.
“I realize we can just see more of the campus... not the ocean,” Your words were gentle. They came out like honey. “But I wanted you to see... how you make me feel like I can fly.”
Mickey stared at your adoringly. Your scent filled his nostrils and he wanted nothing more than to stay like this forever. His hands ventured from your waist to lift them, like in the movie. Mickey leaned forward and whispered, “Come Josephine my flying machine going up she goes...” His hot breath tickled your ear and you could feel as he intertwined his hand with yours. “Going up...”
You turned to stare at him just as the music of your cassette player swelled. You hesitantly reached his face, and Mickey leaned in instinctively. Your hand comfortably rested on the back of his neck as his lips gently pressed against yours.
They were hesitant, hot, gentle, almost hungry. His skin was a burning touch. Your hand melded against his skin, touching the curve of his jaw. Mickey’s fingers danced around your body, wanting to explore every crevice for the first time. Mickey had been unknowingly craving the touch of your skin and lips for so long, it felt like euphoria took control of his body.
He poured himself into you. You were willing to drown in his touch.

Could you tell us more about why you hate auteur theory? (I don't really like it either, but I also don't know a lot of 'film nerds' and I'm curious about your thoughts)
hi id love to!
(if anyones not familiar, auteur theory is a film theory from the 50s/60s that posits the director as the central creative force behind a film)
i think i hate it a little less in its original form, where the director often was actually taking on other roles, most prominently as a writer, but even personally editing or shooting their film in some cases, because then they really DO have more creative control overall. plus it was in part a reaction to the commercialisation of film in the west, so in terms of putting creative control back in the hands of the actual creatives behind a film rather than bending to what studios think will make them money, i can get behind auteur theory.
over time though, the term has become so watered down that now it just means the director is god and everyone else is a thoughtless little cog in their machine, which is so disrespectful and so ANNOYING. like, you cannot call the director on some billion dollar movie an auteur bc they dont really do jack fucking shit actually. id say lots of smaller films can still fit into this theory, where an independent director is the one whos come up with the story concept themselves and helped to write the screenplay, and is heavily involved in the editing process and so on, but the bigger a project gets (in my experience) the less true 'control' the director has.
personally, the way i view it is, if the director didn't come up with the story or didn't co-write the screenplay, then they are nothing to me they are just some guy they're not the driving creative force.
as someone who's involved in film myself, the main reason that i hate auteur theory is that its really just so disrespectful to film crews (on set and post) and moreover disrespectful and dismissive of filmmaking as an art form. film is inherently a collaborative art, and even if some people argue 'yeah but the director is the one telling everyone what to do and how to do it' thats such a simplistic take on it. some directors are very specific about what they want, yes, of course, but a lot of times a director will give a brief on what they want, and the relevant department will create the specifics, or they'll say 'right we can do that, but this might be much better' or whatever. filmmaking is a very fluid process as well, and things change all the time, and i think if you think that the director is in charge of it all youre very unfamiliar with how it works. it makes me really cranky when i see people talk about when things go wrong or look bad in films and they immediately blame the dop or (so so SO common) the post production departments, as if its a huge failure on their part. like ok if directors are kings, why dont you blame them for the bad shit too? or do you only think theyre in control when magic happens?
lastly, because i am running late for work now, the whole auteur aura tbh just makes excuses for sloppy work. i just worked on a project with a notoriously Auteur style director, and from what i heard about how he works, being on set is fucking hell. oftentimes when you trust in a director's 'creative vision' you sacrifice discipline and scheduling and lots of other organization that is so crucial to getting a job done on time and with high quality results, bc youre basically just working at the whim of one guy who's more concerned about realizing a singular vision than they are with the practicalities of making a film.
