a reminder that The Darkest Hour comes just before Merlin Buries Lancelot in the soundtrack. the darkest hour was lancelot's death. it was the moment everything went wrong. it was the moment merlin and gwen and arthur broke irreparably. merlin lost his greatest source of unconditional love, gwen lost her first love, and arthur lost his first and most loyal knight. all of them fought for him and all of them lost him regardless. then everything goes to hell.

ppl are like "why didn't they just shove a criminal slated for execution into the veil to close it?" and they're right. it would be kinda dishonourable, i guess, but you're gonna kill them anyway so . however, this problem could be avoided entirely by canon simply stating that the callieach demands a willing sacrifice, the same way that gwen had to enter the lake of her own accord in 5x09. according to kilgharrah, the veil doesn't ask for anything - the callieach is the one who demands a soul. maybe she'd just take any soul, but she kinda seems like the type who wants to be entertained. she wants to watch people trip over themselves to die, to betray each other and show their 'true faces'. it would work well and patch a plot hole considering arthur, merlin, and lancelot - who set out to sacrifice themselves - were all willing to enter the veil.

i absolutely adore gwencelot it's so cute and lovely but. i feel like the writers' insistence that lancelot does some things solely because of gwen - while it grounds him and makes him less saint-like - kind of cheapens his character... lancelot is established in no uncertain terms to be the "bravest and most noble of them all". he's willing to jump into danger for strangers and adheres very strictly to an internal moral code; he is "everything the knight's code stands for". the idea that he sacrificed himself in 4x02 solely because gwen asked him to look after arthur (unless ofc it's just that gwen thinks that's the reason, and not the writers saying that it is) is ridiculous bc. he could have just let merlin sacrifice himself instead of arthur? but he didn't. and i know that he has diminished self-worth and with guinevere happily in love with arthur he feels wayward and without purpose and may have just felt that his life was the least meaningful but. that's kind of the point of his nobility? he thinks so little of himself despite being the purest of heart and the loveliest person out there. he's humble to a fault and would be willing to sacrifice his life whether he had everything he possibly wanted in life (a knighthood, guinevere's love etc.) or not. he clearly adores gwen but there's more to him than that, dear writers... and gwen is not the only person important to him. and even if merlin wasn't dear to him, he'd probably jump into the rift anyway. he's the kind of good that is self-destructive and inherently unsustainable. he kind of is a saintly character, and that's okay...
