Baticul is a Safety Nightmare
Baticul is a city full of pride, fontech, nobles, and safety violations. Looking at the city it is easy to tell they prioritize fontech over safety. From the first step into the city, this is clear. I know much of this could be graphical limitations, prioritizing certain areas, and assets that were more important to go elsewhere. 3d and game design are super difficult but this was fun to go through and notice all these things. This is a long post.
The Docks:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First entering the city, you are met with an enormous concrete or stone dock likely mainly used for cargo and large ships. Aside from the potential slip hazard from the material, I likely wouldn't have paid much mind because Baticul needs the ease of transporting these freight boxes. That would have been my mindset if this also wasn't used for public transport and a general public meeting place. This entire front portion of the dock is completely unfenced except for the areas reserved for the cargo. That fence-looking structure in the first picture extends out to the side next to the guard and is not a fence along the edge to keep people from falling like I originally thought. This man next to Luke is one wrong gust of wind or shoulder bump from dropping 35 or so feet, during low tide, into the ocean (approximate dock height is assuming the guard is around 6 feet for reference). This is also the place where you meet the little kid cowboy, Misika, who has the same falling risks as the man. I am curious about how many people fall in when it is a busy time of year. However, looking at the line across the side of the dock, it is clear that this is at low tide. The difference between the top of the dock and the high tide line seems about 10 feet or so. Ocean tidal range difference for low and high could be 30+ feet, so a 25-foot difference checks out. The ramp shown in the right image may extend left far enough so that, if people happen to fall in, they can get rescued by the guard. Even if death risks aren’t as high here, open water can be dangerous. And even if people can get easily rescued, that does not mean the rest of Baticul is safe.
The First Level:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we move on to the main portion of the city, we get dropped off by the gondolas. Directly to the South, we see a kid looking over the edge of a non-roped-off section of one of these drop-off points. He is also one wrong gust away from being a Baticul missing person statistic that was solved by looking at the bottom of wherever this leads. None of the gondola entrance points have it roped off when the gondola is not present. At least the fences surrounding this area look solid, unlike the rest of Baticul.
The next biggest point is the large fence gap at the base of this staircase to the East. This seems like an unfortunate series of events waiting to happen, let alone the safety risks of having a large gap leading to a long fall.
The third, more nitpicky, point is the simple railing found around Baticul. The gap in that could easily fit a small child through it and could pose some potential risks for parents not keeping a close eye on them. But at least those sections have a form of railing at all.
The Second Level:
This level seems fairly okay even if the fences are simple railings. Plus this area seems more of a military section than a public place. I will give this one a pass.
The Third Level (The Palace):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting strong, The palace has many fence gaps next to stairwells. The first is the edge of the stairwell leading to some guards near the top of the first set of stairs. The second point is the lack of fences next to large fall areas. In the first picture above, you can see the gap in the fence from the top of the stairs and the remaining fence. There is also a large flower patch between this fence and the drop-off. I’m sure Baticul gardeners are capable of standing on their own two feet, but this seems like a blatant disregard for worker safety. I suppose Batical has no concept of OSHA yet. Or that Baticul cares more about people stepping on their flowers than the safety of their gardeners working on said flowers. The third fence gap is near the palace, as seen in the second picture. This is mirrored on the other side. This drop seems a little too much of a drop and could cause some damage, especially since people can break bones from simply falling down some stairs. The last point for safety is the open body of water for the monument with the tiniest, likely slippery walkway. I will give Batical some leeway because of the fences and guards surrounding it. If only they surrounded the drop-offs with the same care.
Fabre Manor:
Tumblr media
I know this is also part of the Third Level, but this deserves its own section for safety hazards just to give it the context needed. The main issues come from the open water shown all over the center courtyard space of the manor. It looks to be around two feet based on Luke’s 5’7” height. Two feet of water is very easy to get submerged. The open water is concerning because of Luke, and how he was a baby when he first arrived home, a baby that can’t swim. It is also slightly questionable if Luke knows how to swim at all since he was locked in the manor all his life. In the picture, the cube decoration goes all the way into the water. This is important because it shows that the walkways only sit on top of the water. With a baby replica running around that doesn’t know how to swim, getting trapped under the walkway seems like a surefire way to get to the Fon Belt early. Yes, there are guards and maids around, but drowning is largely silent and can take only a matter of seconds if someone were to not pay attention. One can only hope someone is around to hear the initial splash.
It is also odd that Luke's room is fenced with simple railing rather than ornate fencing like the rest of the courtyard. Yes, this is likely due to drawing more attention to Luke's room and the curved edges of his porch. In general, his room seems out of place, like it isn't supposed to be a bedroom at all. But that is a different discussion altogether. Right below his room is more open water and a sizable drop for a potentially curious replica toddler.
Baticul, only the strongest may survive this city!
Anyway, I hope you found some enjoyment from this long ramble! I simply think too much about random potential safety issues with fictional cities haha.

@mistralxsoul continued from here!
Today was, decidedly, a little bit strange. And even that felt like it was putting it mildly, Guy thought.
His travels had brought him to a city called Zaphias for the time being. It was a much needed break, considering everything he'd been helping to achieve back home. Finally putting a stop of Van's plans and concluding everything at the Absorption Gate hadn't been an easy task, after all. Even without that, he'd been kept plenty busy in Grand Chokmah in the immediate aftermath. Whether that be with walking Emperor Peony's rappigs or settling into his own life, it had been a busy time for Guy. Fortunately, the Emperor had understood his need for a break. Much the same as his friends would have, he imagined.
So far, the stay had been pleasant! Zaphis itself was a nice enough city, or at least was presenting itself to be. In some ways it reminded him of Baticul. That likely had to do with the way the city was structured, Guy concluded. Nobility higher up in the city and the rest of the citizenry further down. In turn, the similarities had reminded him of Luke.
Oh, Luke... he hoped his friend was doing okay now that he had a chance to try and figure out what to do with his life. Knowing his friend, though, that wouldn't be an easy task. So, Guy shook his head and decided to go about his day. Luke wouldn't want Guy to dwell on wondering what he was doing with himself, Guy decided.
Ever since he'd arrived in the city, though, people he had taken the time to talk to had kept mistaking him for someone else. Someone called Flynn, he'd gathered pretty quickly. First it had been some of the knights he'd seen, then just regular citizens. Each calling him that name. One particular man who'd had a dog with him had greeted Guy like they were old friends before realizing the mistake. He hadn't really understood it, but politely cleared up the confusion before the man and his dog were on their way again. Apparently the two had had somewhere they needed to be outside the city.
Still. To repeatedly get mistaken for someone? Strange...
"Whoever this 'Flynn' is must be pretty well liked," Guy concluded as he continued to walk. It was still bizarre, but he could brush it off. Still, as he started to make his way down one particular street, his mind wandered. People kept mistaking him for someone who, he imagined, must have looked remarkably similar to him. Back home, given everything that had happened before he'd decided to take his trip, there would have been an easy explanation. But surely that couldn't be the case here... right?
All too suddenly, Guy became aware of what sounded like a scuffle. The familiar sounds of someone in armor was among the mix. Guy figured it was one of the knights he'd run into earlier that day, and from the sound of it he thought maybe they had it handled. He could help, but as he started to turn his head to see just what was happening, it happened. A yelp first, then a sudden weight crashing into him.
The knight in question, a blond man with his hair styled in an oddly familiar way, had gotten knocked right into Guy. The additional weight of his armor added to the force to the collision made it, in a word, memorable. Guy's own yelp mingled with the knight's as he fell to the ground with the armored man on top of him, and for a few long moments he took in the pain. Not the worst thing he'd ever endured, Guy knew, but it still hadn't been pleasant to get knocked into.
Fortunately, the knight's apology reached him as he found himself being helped to sit up.
"Don't worry about it," Guy told him. "I'm just as much to blame since I wasn't paying attention." Then, he got a good look at the knight in question.
For a heartbeat, Guy was stunned into silence. It almost was like looking in a mirror when he really took in Flynn's features. From the way Flynn's hair was styled to his eye color, they looked eerily similar.
A replica...?
No... no, that couldn't be the case, Guy reasoned with himself. The more he looked, the more he noticed differences. Flynn seemed a little more youthful in his facial structure. His eyes were a slightly different shade of blue. His voice, too, Guy realized as he was asked if he was okay, was different.
Van hadn't replicated him. He couldn't have. Guy knew there was a possibility of everyone having a sort of twin in the world somewhere, but he never thought he'd actually be seeing living proof of that.
"Oh, yeah," Guy finally answered, giving his head a small shake. "I'm okay. A little sore, but I think I can manage. This is hardly the worst thing that could've happened." A light laugh punctuated the thought. Getting knocked over and having a man in armor fall on top of him certainly wasn't as bad as the pain he'd endured when the curse slot seal had been at its worst, after all.
He looked past Flynn for just a moment, noting the fallen dagger and the nick on Flynn's cheek.
Tumblr media
"What about the guy you were after? Is it really all right to let him get away?" If he could, he wanted to help. It was the least Guy could do after what had just happened.

Asch, for the character rant meme ❤️
Oh, absolutely.
Favorite thing about him:
This feels very hard to narrow down. I like the arc of his story. I like how he both mirrors and contrasts Luke. I like that he's dark and often in the wrong. I like that he's soft and wants to come across as cold and rational, but is fundamentally incapable of burying his feelings. I like that he's a loose cannon who sometimes makes mistakes, but then also comes at his enemies from a direction they never saw coming. I love the character growth we get in things like Tales of the Rays, which show him warming up to Luke and becoming happier and his whole personality expanding into something more mature. I always like long implausibly red hair. But I think what really draws me to his character is the tension between him being angry and depressed and disengaged, but still an idealist. He has the potential for heroism, and he never succeeds in killing it -- arguably, he never even wants to kill it. He might think of himself as worthless, and he might say awful things to his loved ones, and he might frown all the way through it, but he keeps doing what he thinks is the right thing. Not the right thing for himself, the right thing.
Least favorite thing about him:
I think there's a reason Abyss adaptations keeping cutting out the scene where Asch controls Luke's body in order to make him attack Tear. Yes, it's a dramatic scene, but when you look at the rest of Asch's personality, it feels jarringly sadistic.
Favorite line:
I'll go with Asch's closing line during Natalia's escape from Baticul: "Luke! One mistake and I will kill you." First off, he does it while standing over an evil general he's just struck down for the sake of his people, check him out, he would actually be a decent royal. Secondly, look at him revealing his love for Natalia, right then and there, in front of a crowd of witnesses. A lot of his lines in that scene do that, and it's great -- a rare moment of Asch being emotionally honest. And tied in with that, he unthinkingly, seriously calls Luke "Luke" -- not replica, but using their shared name. Yes, he's threatening to kill him, but he's not only trusting Luke with his most precious person (Natalia), he's using his own name for Luke -- I feel like, in that moment, Asch trusts and respects Luke in a way he usually doesn't allow himself to -- he finds reasons not to. This is the real Asch in this moment, and this is what his relationship with Luke could really be.
brOTP:
Ginji! I feel like Asch and Ginji seriously bond over the course of the game. Asch doesn't often express it (of course), but by the end of the game, I think they're as close as Luke is to any of his party members. I see Ginji as having a softer, more emotionally open personality, but he's also thick-skinned enough not to take Asch's angry posturing too seriously; he sees past Asch's pretenses to the real him, and I imagine he misses him terribly and has a lot of regrets after the game.
OTP:
Asch and Natalia, it's always Asch and Natalia. I remember my first time playing Abyss, being in Ortion cavern when Natalia thanked Asch for protecting her from the boss monster, and Asch very coldly brushed her off. And my brain just went, Oh wait, hold on...? Does he still...? Is it not just her? Are they both...? And then a few minutes later there was an earthquake and he protectively grabbed her and I haven't looked back once.
nOTP:
This is sort of a yes and no. No, there are no (major) Asch ships that I consider so out there that I can't believe anyone would ship it. (I had to add the "major" because maybe out there there's someone who ships AschMieu.) But at the same time, while I acknowledge that Asch and Natalia can have very interesting ships with other characters, I love them so much together that I tend to never even entertain the possibility. I think for me, one of the most significant things that bothers me in an AschNot-Natalia ship is when writers use it to denigrate Natalia's character. Write her off as unimportant, or even unlikable to Asch. By all means, pair him with someone else, but I don't think you can believably write him as not caring at all about Natalia and finding her awful.
Random headcanon:
He (and Luke) are naturally very musically gifted. Asch is particularly good at the piano and used to play it for his mother when he was a child.
Unpopular opinion:
Hm, I think there are potentially some controversial takes with Asch. I think some fanwriters sometimes err too far on the side of making Asch cool and composed and mature, always in control and aloof compared to the more emotional Luke. This makes him very suave and alpha and unflappable, a bit more of a conventional brooding hero. That's not really the Asch I see. To me, Asch is overflowing with emotions and often not good at hiding it. There's footage of the stage play rehearsals showing their Asch actor releasing a primal scream, and I don't know why he's doing that, but whatever his reasons, that feels closer to Asch.
Song I associate with them:
Something edgy and forceful would be right, but let's go with his softer side and say "Lonely Lullaby" by Owl City. It's always made me think of Asch, and all through writing The Stars Are Fire, I had my eye out for an opportunity for Asch to sing Natalia to sleep -- never happened though.
Favorite picture of them:
Excuse me, let me go search my files.
Okay, I limited this to art that's just of Asch, no one else, and while a lot of his official art is unintentionally hilarious (I have a dedicated tag), I've always liked this shot from the anime:
Tumblr media
Hair is down, he's super moody, and having him leap onto the side of the moving Tartarus is a much more dynamic way to end the scene than in the original game.
Thanks for the ask! I always love talking about Asch.

Tales of the Abyss ending analysis
Yeah, everyone and their grandma already gave their opinions, and I know it's an open ending, and no matter the real outcome, the ending will always be bittersweet.
But!! Since I have now played the game, I felt like writing down a compilation of all details while it's fresh (from both what I noticed + people pointed out) that give base to the possibilities.
For the sake of not confusing ourselves, Luke is the protagonist, Asch is the original Luke, Mystery Luke is the post-credits guy.
Ok, first things first. Using the post-credits as reference, I'll split this into 4 things you can use to decide who Mystery Luke is:
The promise Mystery Luke mentions;
Tear cries;
Jade's reaction;
Mystery Luke visuals.
Ready?!
1 - The promise Mystery Luke mentions
Tear asks "why are you here?" Why is he here, indeed. I assume Tear's fonic hymn brought him back. But what if he came back from who-knows-where (the core?) a little before than that, found out how everyone would meet that night, only to make a cinematic appearance? It's been 2~3 years since the final battle (since Luke's coming-of-age cerimony is happening that day, which is Luke's 20th birthday), so there was enough time for him to reform his body and wander a little before showing up.
Anyway, back to her question! He answers there's a nice view of Hod there. See, this Hod is by default the point of meeting, because it was the last place they saw Luke. It also very close to Tataroo Valley, the point of Luke's journey start!
And now he adds. "And also I promised someone." Cool, cool. Let's start by discarding Natalia and Asch promise. The reason is simple, Asch already recognized it in two different moments: back in Sheridan, in the sunset scene and in Baticul, when he saves her and Luke from being executed. Natalia also let this promise go after she starts to want both Asch and Luke to follow their own paths and not be held back by expectations of their noble status and stuff. The only one who kept bringing it back from time to time was Luke, actually. So what's left? Not one, but there's actually TWO promises left!
The first is Luke's promise to his friends of coming back. Well, more specifically, to Tear. Because he only uses the word promise with her. Hence why he says "someone" (one person). If you want to be picky.
The second is Asch's promise of returning alive to Luke. Whoa?! Right after leaving Asch behind in the duel room, Luke makes him promise to survive. And he goes "Shut up! Fine, I promise."
Now, this brings us to the next point-
2 - Tear cries
You would think it's pretty obvious, huh? She cries because she's happy Luke is back! Wrong. What? OK, just maybe. You see, through the whole game, Luke keep all his memories and thoughts written down on his diary (medical orders lol). One of the entries has the following: "I wonder if she won't cry even after I die?" Well, what if Tear noticed something was different and this isn't really Luke. And then we would have the answer: yes, she actually would cry for you, Luke.
So, was it happy Tear(s) or sad Tear(s)? (sorry not sorry)
Now, talking about noticing things, here's the next point-
3 - Jade's reaction
Seeing his reaction the first time, I was so sure he was smiling! Then I wasn't so sure anymore. We don't know if he can listen to Tear and Mystery Luke word exchange. But he's observing the whole thing, the others start to move towards the pair and then there's this big focus on Jade reaction. Something comes to his mind and he gives a little gasp. And then he withers (I can't find a better word). What emotion is he holding back? Is he relieved or is he actually melancholic?
Now, we are talking about the guy whose one of the possible titles is Gambler at Heart. Right now he's finally seeing the results of his bet. Did he win? Did he lost? Was he wrong about the outcome of Luke's destiny? And even if he was, does it really mean Luke is back?
And finally, we get to the last point-
4 - Mystery Luke visuals
We stabilished Jade noticed something. And right after this, the camera goes to show Mystery Luke's back, and we see the Key of Lorelei. Asch is right handed, Luke is left handed. And the sword is positioned for a left handed person. What that means?
Woah, it's Luke?! But, wait. The hair is pretty long for a 2~3 years interval... ("my hair grows fast!", anyone? xD)
Which means... It's Asch's body?!
Not much to comment over the clothes, it's closer to Luke's taste (?) but we don't know where Mystery Luke got them. Fonic magic? Bought somewhere, if you like the idea of him coming back some time before the post-credit scene?
Anyway, in the end, I believe Mysterious Luke having Asch's body is the only sure thing, and here's why-
Bonus - Contamination effect
A "little" extra, some thoughts about the contamination effect and what Jade expected to happen (but didn't want to happen).
I was really excited for the sidequest sequence because I believed it would clear everything up. But!! It didn't? Let's go through what information we got from it.
Let's jump to the second part of this sidequest, when Jade talks to Star, the Cheagle. Someone pointed out that when we free Star back in Ortion Cavern, he was found in the Replica's cell. But Star says he's the Original. He claims that his replica (probably) died. And that he also died once, felt something flow into him and then wasn't dead anymore- and Replica Star was gone. We don't know how Original Star died, but for the sake of the argument, for now, let's say it's was due to the replica experiment side effect.
So the Original eventually dies, and the Replica is absorbed, making the Original come back to life. But wait, remember how we found him in the Replica's cell? Shouldn't we have found him in the Original's cell instead? What does that means?!
Easy. The Replica's body absorbed the fonons of the Original, and the latter took control of it. What Original Star felt was his own fonons flowing into his new body. So even though Original Star "died", he's the one who stayed, taking place of the Replica. Learning what happened, Jade questions if that meant Dist completed the perfect isofon research. So this is the result of creating a replica with perfect isofons.
Now, what happens to the Replica in this case? Is it erased? For the answer, we have the rest of the sidequest.
Third part of the sidequest, Jade talks to Spinoza. We find out that he tried to explain to Asch the effects of a perfect isofon creation, and here we get the concept of the "big bang". Asch was supposed to gradually grow weaker physically and fonic wise until the moment said "big bang" ocurred. But that explanation was misleading, and Jade quickly picks up that Asch got the wrong impression from it (thanks, Spinoza). Jade also thinks "it's too late", as in trying to correct him won't matter at this point, for what Asch already did until now was half motivated by the idea of dying soon. But we already know from Star's case that the Original doesn't really die.
Fourth and last part of the sidequest. Jade talks to Dist. He tells him Asch has died, but not from the big bang thing. Dist just brushes it off, saying that the big bang was probably already beggining. And then Jade says "maybe not!" and Dist goes "but that goes against your own theory!". And by the end of this, Dist adds "...his memories will remain" almost as an attempt to comfort Jade, that replies "no, nothing but his memories will remain."
If you take that literally, it's kinda confusing, because if the Replica's memories do remain, why Original Star didn't seem to recognize he had Replica Star's memories? So I lean to the idea that by "memories" is more like "memories of his existence" rather than "the raw memories that belonged to him"! haha
At this point, we arrive at Jade's logical expectation versus Jade's wishful thinking. If Jade's theory is right, Asch will take Luke's place. But if by some miracle or plot armor the big bang doesn't happen at all, or it happens the other way around, then Jade is wrong. And Jade hopes he is.
Now one more thing about the contamination effect outside of this sidequest chain.
After Asch dies, Luke feels something flow into him. Sounds familiar? Original Star said the same thing. But Luke is still Luke at this point. And then Jade asks if he felt something leave him. Luke just talk about feeling a little weak.
What is that about? Well, Luke receiving fonons from Asch is exactly what was to be expected from perfect isofons. The big bang is happening. If it was the opposite, then Luke would be the one to stay. But that isn't the case. Just like Jade predicted.
Well, you could question why only a bit of fonons were absorbed, like Asch sent specifically his hyperresonance power- Maybe there's no big bang at all, like Jade hoped.
But then, there's the scene right before Luke completes his deal with Lorelei. Jade gives outs his left hand for a shake and Luke raises he right for a second, like a reflex. Even though Luke is left-handed.
Big bag effect? Asch, is that you???
And finally, we have the cutscene of Luke carrying Asch. Right before changing to the outside scene, Asch's hand twitchs. Did Luke just reverse the big bang? Instead of Asch taking Luke's place, Luke takes Asch's place? Maybe because Asch died before the big bang took full effect?? (Even though Dist wasn't concerned about it...)
I think YES. Listen, Original Star never died. He was big banged into Replica Star. But Asch, an original, did die. And Jade has learned time and time again that you can't bring back the dead. There.
Oh, Asch's memories? Star didn't get any new memories. Luke won't, either.
Aaahh??
Like Mieu and Luke said: "I don't really understand it!" (lol)
Another bonus - Lorelei
I kinda of get why some people think Mystery Luke has Lorelei involved somewhere, but may I remind that Lorelei's final goal was to go to space and become the seventh fonon belt? He even goes woosh towards the sky in the post-final-battle cutscene.
Really, the only thing he does in the end is to congratulate Luke and leave.
Did I miss something??
Conclusion
I thought by the end of this I would find myself with an ambiguous conclusion, but as I wrote down, I got stuck with only one outcome.
Mysterious Luke' promise? It's Luke's "I'll be back" promise. Tear cries? Yes, of happiness (because she refuses to cry of sadness). Jade's reaction? "OH?!" to "Welp, you almost fooled me." Mystery Luke's visual? Questionable fashion. It's Luke. I mean- it's Asch's body, due to reverse big bang! Yes, if you follow my logic, Luke's back in Asch's body. No, no, I don't like it very much either. Lorelei is pure 7th fonon, couldn't he, like, fix both of them? Lolerei is the true villain, guys. Wasn't Asch tragic enough, he doesn't get another chance? Are you happy, Jade?? ('cause you doesn't seem like it, what are you hiding, man, stop it-)
(Also, Asch just can't keep any promises smh)
I don't see it as Luke taking over Asch. Asch died before any of it. Luke was just... Lucky.
I'll see myself out. (lol)
That's it! A reminder this is only my understanding of the whole thing.
...I kinda want to check out the ending of the manga and anime now, but the manga isn't fully available on internet, it seems. :o I may add something here after I rewatch the anime hehe

Tales of Sexylady Poll Results
The poll finished with 204 responses! Thank you everyone for participating. As last time, I reserved 5 spots for write-in votes. I'll post the final bracket in a bit, but for now, here is a summary of the results.
First, a shout-out to the lovely ladies who didn't quite make the cut. Everyone on the list got voted for at least once, so they are all appreciated by someone, but they just didn't have the numbers. Many of these characters suffered from the simple fact that their games are not readily accessible to the Western fanbase, so let's hope for translations and ports in the future so everyone can appreciate them!
In order, the honourable mentions (and number of votes) are:
Mary (30)
Mint (24)
Hilda (20)
Sodia (20)
Ines (19)
Rondoline (18)
Schwartz (17)
Ange (16)
Shizel (16)
Harold (13)
Atwight (11)
Ilene (11)
Nanaly (11)
Philia (10)
Mathias (8)
Elrane (7)
Symonne (6)
Almeidrea (6)
Peridot (4)
Lilith (4)
Agarte (3)
Incarose (3)
Beryl (3)
Fortuna (3)
Zilva (2)
Thitose (1)
Let's have a moment of silence for Thitose, the character who remained at 0 votes for the longest time, and only secured a single vote in the end.
Tumblr media
The Winning Write-Ins
41 characters were submitted for consideration. The top 5 earned a slot in the final bracket. They are:
Mary Kaufman
Pronyma
Driselle Sharil
Nephry
And the 5th slot will go to Replica Nebilim, winner of the Nebilim-off hosted earlier today. Both Nebilims had an equal number of votes... probably. As discussed earlier, I counted "Nebilim (unspecified)" as the Replica version.
The next two most popular write-ins were Laplace from Luminaria, and Undine. I'm not sure which Undine, that is. Some voters specified the Symphonia version while others didn't specify. I think we will have to have a spirit tourney in the future to clear everything up.
In a similar situation are the spirits Luna and Celsius. Tied with them are Fourier from graces, Seres from Berseria, and Noir from Abyss.
Finally, the following characters all got 2 votes each: Aqua, the Baticul Lesbian, Jozette Cecille, Karla Outway, Kasque, Lisette, Mesissa, and Mileena. I hope Baticul Lesbian is happy being in a group with Cecille.
There isn't time to list every write-in who got only 1 vote, but here are some of my favourites:
Anna Irving. I respect a woman who is sexy purely on vibes.
"Captain Aqua from Tales of Hearts r is the sexiest Tales lady to me hands down I don't even know if she's 18+ because she doesn't even have a page on Aselia and she kinda looks like a Bratz doll but she's a badass pirate captain and her color scheme of purple and yellow looks so good istg." I respect you and I believe you, anon. I can't even find a picture of her when I google, so I'll have to take your word on it, but I'm sorry no one else shared your passion.
Morgrim. My good friend. This is a cat.
"Marble (ToS) (listen I know she's old but sexiness is in the heart)." You know what anon? Marble is a grandmother, which means she is a mother to someone who is also a mother, so that's like, MILF x 2. It's simple math.
Thanks for participating!

Post Eldrant headcanon: the royal family erects a statue commemorating Luke and Asch's heroics in the space between the manor and the castle. Luke and/or Asch (depending on who comes back) absolutely hates it.
OMG I CAN SEE THAT PERFECTLY FKSNFN I imagined it looking very dramatic, like both of them holding the Sword of Lorelei up to the sky He-Man Style or something.
both of them would think it’s SO CRINGE I can see Luke walking by and holding his hand to the side of his head so he doesn’t accidentally see it sometimes. Asch just tells himself that if he pretends it doesn’t exist then it won’t bother him. If he doesn’t make eye contact, it can’t deal psychic damage to him (false).
I like to imagine that if it’s Luke who comes back, he doesn’t stay in Baticul very long. He says at the beginning that it doesn’t really feel like HOME to him there. I’m not saying the statue would contribute to Luke fucking off to go couch surf at Guy’s swanky Grand Chokmah estate until it’s time to work on the replica home project, but I’m not saying it WOULDN’T be a reason.
Bonus, if it’s Lorelei: Lorelei would definitely admire the statue because they’re extremely proud of their isofons they did so well and it’s a very nice statue.

For the AU meme -- we've seen Pere mercifully kidnap Guy and save him after the death of his family. What happens when they arrive in Fabre Manor, and instead of going through with Secret Revenge Plans (tm), Pere finds himself kidnapping Guy again, *and* Master Luke. And he doesn't tell Van where he goes.
Pere re-abducts Guy and abducts Young Master Luke before Van had the chance to enact his replication plans, so there is no replica Luke running around. After less than a year in the Fabre manor, Pere was painfully aware of how neglectful and strict Duke Fabre was, and how constantly being around Guy's stressors was wearing on him. He decided that this was no place for Master Gailardia nor Master Luke to grow up in.
Pere takes Luke with him also in the hopes that this will humanize Luke in Guy's eyes. Pere was so very, very worried about Guy wanting to kill Luke when Luke had no part in the Gardios slaughter. If Guy went through with it, Pere was convinced Guy would lose some part of himself, forever.
Pere takes them out of Baticul on foot, to head for Chesedonia. A boat would be too easy to track with logs and manifests, and it'd be easy to blend in with a caravan making its way across the desert. Pere parts with some coin for passage, more than he'd like, but it's worth it to put distance between Baticul and these children.
Guy is Not Happy to be pulled away from his revenge plans, and is especially not happy to be traveling with Luke, of all people. The kid is still a haughty brat who's natural coloring is the mark of his family's murderer. It takes ages for Guy's walls to be worn down over the course of the journey, and he's finding that the longer they're on the road, the less Luke is trying to act like his father. That makes Guy realize that yes, Luke was just a little kid, trying to live up to one of the only role models he had in his life. Guy finally starts to ease up on him.
Pere successfully smuggles them across the border into Malkuth, and he takes them to St. Binah where they can grow up and live semi-normal lives as regular children in a decently sized city. Luke loooooves climbing up and down the gigantic tree in his play time, and Guy spends many hours learning engineering from tinkering with his fon tech projects. They are able to live there rather peacefully for a few years, until Oracle Knights start to get a little too close, so it's time to move again.

Today is the birthday of the Abyss boys, Luke and Asch!
To celebrate the holidays and their birthdays, here is a festive drawing! This is based on my Family AU. The Luke equivalent (Lian) and Guy decorate the tree at Nephry's place while Peony, Jade, and Nephry help out in the background. Asch's equivalent is safely at home in Baticul, likely also celebrating!
Hope you all have safe and happy holidays!

though i don't think it's right to say the party didn't like luke before he changed. there are a lot of times where its obvious they do have some sort of attachment to him even if its obscured by how annoyed and/or frustrated he makes them. like when luke went back to baticul for the first time and everyone was trying to cheer him up and go sightseeing together, or when they were worried about him during their trip to choral castle. they were rightfully biased, as they saw the forefront of his behavior, but if they hadn't liked him at all they wouldn't have agreed to travel with him again, nor would their feelings after akzeriuth be so personal.
#.text#tales of the abyss#its fun bc their relation to him in like every scenario is Personal.#jade and guy is obvious. jade being the one to create replica's at all and feeling responsible and even guilty for many things#regarding luke. and guy being someone who raised luke. he had a lot of responsibility there too but i also believe he just#loved luke enough to the point that no matter what happened he would always be there to help. and wish for luke's safety.#tear feels partially responsible for them having been taken to malkuth and in turn for a lot of things that happened after#even if it wasnt entirely her fault. and seeing how luke was manipulated by van was probably personal to her too.#ion is self explanatory too i think. theyre both replicas and their feelings on the matter are very similar. ion was#also the first to actually See luke for what he was. and though i think anise was sticking around luke specifically for selfish reasons#at first i think his situation - the guilt. the betrayal. and the responsibility - all felt personal to her too.#natalia is similar i think. she feels partially responsible for how luke turned out as well as how she treated him#even if he wasnt the nicest back.#i also think their feelings on akzeriuth changed a lot over time - starting at their deep anger where they probably thought#we were there. we could have stopped it and we could have stopped HIM.#to something else. the anger is still there and it probably always will be but its kind of easy to notice how they became#a lot less completely brutal about it as time went on. they probably realized on their own why everything really happened#the anger will always be justified but its clear they all feel a little guilty about it. some more than others#though the 'more' in that sense is a lot Less justified but thats more because nobody in this cast#is mentally okay. so thats neither here nor there.

tbh mohs makes a lot of sense in the context of him being mostly motivated by jealousy. tear comments something like "mohs just wanted prosperity for humankind..." and i think it's something like
mohs is a conservative obv whose perspective is "the world is literally so simple if we just follow the score and do as we're told everything will work out"
im so good at following the score and doing what needs to be done but everyone else is a dumbass who doesn't get it and quibbles over the specifics when NOTHING EXCEPT THE SCORE MATTERS because it LITERALLY says that if we just follow it everything will be good
the score is literally the most important thing ever but i CAN'T use the seventh fonon so i CAN'T read it i have to depend on other people for it
so mohs is the classic egomaniac where "if i was just in charge i would do everything right", but he CAN'T be in charge because he CAN'T read the score, which fundamentally pisses him off. so he's obsessed with trying to manipulate the fon master and views him as just a frustrating annoyance
this is why he has all the replicas, because as far as he's concerned they're interchangeable so long as they can read the score for him and look enough like him to fulfill a vague political role. then when when ion reads the 7th and then produces a result he doesn't like mohs fumes and says he can't even read the stone right, even though he can't even read it. cuz mohs is just so deep in his own ideas about what the score is, the thing that he's been denied access to from his birth, that it really pisses him off
i didn't really think abt this until the scene with dist at the baticul docks though where it's like "there's nothing mohs wanted more than the power of the fon master", i think it's not just about him politically (though it is) but also because fundamentally mohs is just incapable of doing something ion could and that probably drove him off the deep end
