Any favorite traditional foods?
OHOHO I've got a list of few! I might go into some depth w them too
Food images under the cut, in case anyone don't want to see or have their dash blasted with long text KJSHDKSD
Traditional, meaning food common in my tribe btw!
Tumblr media
My absolute favorite is Babi Panggang or Grilled Pork! It's mostly a Batak Karo or Batak Toba dish (I'm Batak Simalungun) but it's common in most Bataknese communities everywhere. It's basically grilled pork often paired with bone clear soup and spiced pig's blood as the dipping sauce. Better paired with some sambal andaliman made with a local type of sichuan pepper, gives a nice numbing kick.
ohh man im craving them now :(
Tumblr media
Another pork dish, this one is Saksang! There's also a version of it with dog meat but I don't really like that one. Lotsa spice and stuff and braised in it's own blood. There are versions of it without using the blood too if that's not your thing. There's ALWAYS Saksang whenever there's a traditional event, I guarantee that.
Tumblr media
Another fave but I don't eat commonly, Dayok Nabinatur and Hinasumba! Dayok Nabinatur means chicken that is arranged and it's mostly a special dish only served in special occasions like birthdays and marriage. People would give this as a sort of gift to someone, with the head of the chicken facing the recipient - with means of wishing said person's life will be arranged or proceed in an orderly way. It's commonly paired with Hinasumba, which is minced chicken. Both cooked with spices and the chicken's blood, but again there are variants w/o the blood. I love the Hinasumba most :]
There's also some traditional sambals I like called Tinobur and Tinuktuk. Tinobur is sambal for fried or grilled fish and you can pretty much use Tinuktuk for anything you like, you can even mix it with hot water and drink it like soup.
Sorry for the ramble!!! but WOO I love food :]

What languages do you speak? If you don't mind me asking, it's up to you ofc if you'd rather keep that private :3
Hello! (٥⁀▽⁀ )/
The languages I speak fluently are only two : > Indonesian and English
I understand but can't speak : > Javanese, Bataknese, and Sundanese (these are local tribal languages. Indonesia still have a lot of people who speak tribal languages so I have to understand them to get around places. I'm learning to speak them atm)
I can read the foreign letters but I don't understand what I'm saying : > Japanese, Korean (I'm getting better at Korean this year I'm proud of myself).
I used to learn but forgot most of it : Mandarin (Chinese)
My languages are a mess LMAO like I also used to want to learn Italian and Turkish cuz there was a drama that I really wanna watch but there's no subtitles. I did learn Turkish a bit in Duolingo but didn't continue them 😭
So yeah, those are it!

shinpachi and katsura are a little harder, because the batak language didn’t originally have characters for “sh” and “ch” and “ts” sounds. i think there are characters for them now!! i’m just worried i’m getting it wrong ahahah.

Could you tell me more about Sam? our bitter rival lol.
Sam sure was your rival, but guy's far from bitter he's just a mess lmao. Not sure yet how much I should reveal, but I'll talk about how he came to be!
Samudra Sagala -> Indonesian name, Sagala is a Bataknese (also Indonesian, just in a different region).
I think only fellow Indonesians would get this reference, but there's so many Bataknese lawyers in the country (like, 90% of lawyers you'll see in the news) that it was almost an inside joke here. And that's why I chose that name for Sam. Just wanted to make a little reference/easter egg there lol.

Just curious Sleepy, how many languages do you speak? ✨
Hello Anon! ヽ(・∀・)ノ
Whew this is out of the blue!
I speak fluent Bahasa Indonesia as my mother tongue, and English as my second language (I'm kinda out of practice for the speaking aspect but reading and listening I do just fine).
In Indonesia itself there are hundreds of tribal language. I don't speak any of it, but if they speak it I can understand what they're saying, which is Bataknese, Javanese, and Sundanese (Mom's Bataknese, Dad's Javanese. Both speak their own languages with their own families. And my college is in Sunda speaking region so I kinda have to understand Sundanese to go around).
Internationally, I can read Korean hangul (since I love K-dramas and K-Pop) but I don't understand what I'm saying. I can read Japanese Katakana and Hiragana but again, I don't understand what I'm saying. Learned Mandarin as one of the obligatory subject in school, but I forget like 90% of it.
TL;DR :
Fluently : Bahasa Indonesia and English
Don't speak but understand : Bataknese, Javanese, and Sundanese
Don't know what I'm saying : Korean, Japanese, and Mandarin.

My mood
its 19th june 2023
Since i got this mental illness, my emotion, and my mood can change instantly. Like, in the morning iam soo full happy, but then, in the afternoon, i can be so sad and crying for no reason. I try to fight it, with the help of my boyfriend. Thank God, He supports me, and he knows how to deal with me when im quiet and maze eye. My hope is so simple, i hope he stays forever beside me, and pray to God, that he is gonna be my last journey of relationship. i dont know about him, sometimes i feel so not worth it. Hes fu*ing handsome, chinnese , white and good looking. Then me? im black, half of bataknese and a half of Javanese, my skin is tan, and i feel im not good looking. but in the other side, i feel so lucky that now, im officially his Girlfriend., and i cherish every moment to be with him. even though we meet just 2 days in a week. saturday and sunday. its enough for me, but we communicate like every time we have a time to send messages. I hope he never get tired of me. Plese God, let me be his last also. :) I love you E!

songs that currently possess the strings of my heart
didia rongkaphi - rita butar-butar  // i can hear the strength and power and emotion in her voice echoing in my ears as i go about my day. i channel it directly into my head for hours every night this past week, potentially even these past few weeks. i can hear her even when i am asleep. the way she sings the chorus has captured me heart and soul. god. i feel like crying. i feel like if i was ever able to go to a physical performance of her singing, i would blister my hands and the insides of my throat from the ferocity of my clapping. i love her so much. oh my god.
tao toba - siantar rap foundation // tao toba is the name of a lake. this song makes me want to cry a little bit. it brings me nostalgia for a place i’ve never been. ever since i learned what one of the lines means, it has made me furrow my brow with a sense of melancholy and longing every time i listen to it. “naeng mulak tu huta” > i want to go home to that village. i would like to go see lake toba. my mum wanted to take us! but the other day, she said she was worried i would get possessed. i hope this will not be an obstacle. i very much want to see the lake that has inspired not only this song but many others.
iturusanay 跟著走 - sangpuy 桑布伊 // it’s just. it’s a really nice song. and his voice is very very lovely. i read an article describing sangpuy’s voice as an old man in a young man’s body. i think there is more than a few grains of truth in that. when he sings “ama, ina”—i really really like this part. “ama” and “ina” mean father and mother. i think it always makes a song feel a different more heartaching sort of way when the singer calls out to a parent. this song especially is about honouring and remembering everyone who came before you. it is all the more important to remember that sangpuy is an indigenous taiwanese man from the puyuma people. both puyuma and bataknese are austronesian languages!! i can see some of the connections myself! “ama” and “ina” (father and mother in puyuma) correspond blatantly to “amang” and “inang” (father and mother) in bataknese!
all’s well that ends well - rainbow kitten surprise
// today i said to a friend: do you ever hear a sound that is so nice that you feel it in your loins. and they said “yeah” and i said “good.” and felt wonderfully not alone. this song makes me experience this feeling. it also makes me experience the feeling of needing to take a deep breath that strains my lungs so i can release the sort of tension it encases in my chest.

June 2022.
The main reason i visited Medan was attending my highschool bestfriend's wedding, Septi. She is a Bataknese girl, the one and only person who can make me laugh till cry, so far.
The wedding actually held in a village called Dolok Saribu, it's Septi's husband village. It took 4-5 hours (i barely recall) by car from Medan. So, Arul and I had to drive from Medan at around 4 am, when we just had our sleep at around 11 or 12 pm because the holy matrimony was started at 8 am. Don't ask me how the road trip was. It was a normal dawn trip with talks, musics and 'wow' words that i kept saying to Arul about what i saw during the trip untill we got lost by google map.
Our car was lead to a narrow road that turned out to be local farmer access and for motorcycle only. And our car was stuck in muddy road. Alone. Just the two of us and our car. We half dressed up for a wedding. Long story short... in the middle of nowhere, no one, no any other way (we already tried our best to get our car tires out of the mud) we met someones that happened to pass by for morning field working and help us got through this.
We finally arrived at the wedding. Even we also had to walk up to the church with strong independent 'inang-inang', on muddy road for the second time. But it was a beautiful traditional wedding. And the story about people cry during someone's wedding was real! I shed happy tears, my tiny bestfriend got married and couldn't believe i was able to witness it.

It was my first time attending a friend's wedding and happened to be the 'my trip my adventure!' wedding, unforgettable and beautiful memory. And grateful for Arul, who was with me during this trip. Sat together with 'inang-inang' being the most handsome in the room, no signal and not complaining, kurang tidur setir subuh2 buat nemenin ke nikahan and told me to sleep instead.
