I’m rebuilding an OC to be a bit more mythology-compliant and hence based on a real mushroom. So I found two cool-looking mushrooms cultivated in China
Shrooms’ info is under the cut
Shaggy Ink Cap - when young, is perfectly edible after being cooked - when old, is hard to preserve before its cap dissolve into black goo it produce. It has a mild taste. It can be mistaken for a similar toxic species. Despite all of this it’s used nonetheless and it looks cool
Sweet Osmanthus Ear - is used in Buddha’s Delight (a traditional vegetarian dish) and in production of saccharine preservatives. Looks jelly :)

☆Day 22: Fungal☆
"Fungloom (Fungus + Gloom), the Gloomy Ink Pokémon. This Pokémon often looks like it's weeping, but it's just secreting excess ink that it naturally produces within its body. It leaks out from the brim of the mushroom "hat" as well as the bottom of its "dress". The liquid is non-toxic, and when strained, makes for a useful ink for artists. This Pokémon is very finicky, however, and will refuse to give its ink to someone it dislikes. They can usually be bribed with perfumes or other gifts of finery, as they like being seen as beautiful."
Based on the shaggy ink cap mushroom.

FOTD #013 : magpie inkcap! (coprinopsis picacea)
the magpie inkcap is a saprotrophic species in the family psathyrellaceae. it is common in europe & australia, but also occurs in canada, the US, russia & south africa !!
the big question : can i bite it?? please don't :-0 this fungus is poisonous.
Tumblr media
c. picacea description :
"the cap is initially egg-shaped, reaching a width of 7 cm. later, it opens up & takes on a bell shape that is up to 8 cm wide. the cap is serrated & colored white on very young mushrooms. it breaks open with increasing age, so that the beige to dark brown background emerges. remnants of the white, grayish to cream-colored velum remain on the cap as flakes, giving the impression of woodpecker or magpie plumage. with age, the brim of the cap rolls up & dissolves. the lamellae are very close & are initially greyish-white, then pink to gray in color. eventually they melt, dripping and black, giving it the name inkcap. the stalk is whitish & 12–20 (–30) cm long & 6–15 mm thick. it is hollow & not very stable, slightly tapered towards the top & covered with scales or fine fibers that form a snake towards the base. the flesh is whitish with a fibrous, watery consistency & sometimes has an unpleasant smell of moth powder. the taste is also unpleasant."

4th October 2022-Lakeside and home
Pictures I took today in this photoset are of; shaggy ink cap, St. John’s-wort, view with nice autumn leaves at Lakeside, bramble on the Lakeside walk, Woodpigeons at Lakeside, red autumn leaves and some hawthorn berries at Lakeside, lots agrimony looking nice together a great yellow colour, two more views at Lakeside and red bartsia there. It felt like the area took strides into the autumn with increasing colour in the leaves today which looked really pretty. I felt quite inspired by seeing yellow and red coloured leaves. Such an exciting time of year and on a mostly overcast and sometimes wet day the colourful coat of autumn helped give the day a cozy feel.
Key species seen today:
Shaggy ink cap-A big moment in my autumn always came on the green out the front too when I noticed a couple of shaggy ink caps. Its really nice to see these enigmatic mushrooms again after my first of the year at Bolderwood in the New Forest on Saturday. It’s always a treat to see these in autumn.
Agrimony and red bartsia-Two long and thin flowers holding out nicely into the autumn bringing nice colour at Lakeside.
Woodpigeon-The line of three together on the bare branches in the photo a key image to take away from the walk and I am on a good run for seeing these well at Lakeside lately which is notable, as well as seeing them at home.
Blue Tit seen and Great Tit heard at Lakeside-Another couple of birds I am doing well for lately which it was great to encounter at Lakeside today.
Moorhen and Lesser-black Backed Gull-Two birds to add a nice aquatic splash to my sightings on my lunch time walk in an impromptu based on the route of the walk I had planned bonus look at beach lake this week, with two Moorhens walking about on the shore and a Lesser Black-backed Gull on the buoy.
Today I also liked seeing; Starlings gathering in numbers on the roof visible from my room and feeding well from my room again, House Sparrow with them, Collared Dove, Magpie well at Lakeside, Carrion Crow seen flying over Lakeside well, Black-headed Gull, some fluffy old man’s beard in the meadow area which looked nice last year, fleabane, ragwort, dandelions, other nice mushrooms ones I had seen before at Lakeside this year and I heard Ring-necked Parakeet from home and heard a Green Woodpecker really well at Lakeside a great high pitched duo.

Shaggy scaley cap fungi sketch | Limited edition fine art print from an original drawing. Pholiota squarrosa, commonly known as the shaggy scalycap, the shaggy Pholiota, or the scaly Pholiota, is a species of mushroom in the family Strophariaceae. My sketches start life as hand-drawn graphite images made on cartridge paper. I often work on these with charcoal, oil pastel or Caran d'Ache to create the look I'm after. The artwork is then scanned and finessed digitally ready for fine art printing. This process often referred to as Giclée printing uses the highest standard of printing methods to give gallery quality results that maintain all the details of the original sketch. The graphite pencils I use are Faber-Castel, the oil pastels are Sennelier and the china-graph is Caran d’Ache. The inks are pigment based archive quality (100years+). The heavyweight specialist papers I use are of the best professional quality having a wonderful surface designed specifically for fine art drawings and illustrations. Very limited editions with only ten per size printed. All artwork is signed and includes a certificate of authenticity. The A5 are 5.8" x 8.25" (14.8cm x 21cm) The A4 are 8.25" x 11.7" (21cm x 29.8cm) The A3 are 11.7" x 16.5" (29.8 cm x 42cm) The A2 are 16.5" x 23.4" (42 cm x 59.4cm) Frames not included in price. Free shipping on artwork to UK destinations.

Coprinus comatus
Shaggy mane
~and the weird behavior of a mushroom hater.
It was springtime in Lorain County, Ohio, just a county over from my home in Cleveland.
A nature preserve trail passed shortly through a forest gap, where some grass grew in bright sunlight.
I spotted a shaggy mane in perfect condition and happily took out my camera for some close ups.
Shaggy mane is a kind of inky cap. It doesn't contain coprine, so you can eat it with alcohol unlike the common ink cap.
As it matures, its conical cap margins deliquesce, turn to inky black goo, and drip away to nothing.
I noticed a couple approaching. I had the shots I wanted anyway, so I stood up and said hello.
The pair seemed to be in their mid sixties. The man had a fancy long range camera on a shoulder strap. I figured they were bird watching, as I'd heard them chatting at a distance about birds.
The woman was friendly and asked me what I was taking pictures of in a non-inquisitory way. I gestured to the mushroom.
I answered a few more questions.
What is it? Is it edible? How can you tell if it's poison?
I tried to show her some passion.
I assumed based on their birdwatching that I was talking to some fellow nature lovers. Yet, as soon as I pointed to the mushroom, the man's attitude made a sudden change. He had a somewhat dismissive smile on his face as I spoke, making me uncomfortable and paranoid.
He looks like he doesn't like me, I thought. But don't be silly. He just met me!
The woman continued, genuinely curious. I told her I don't want to take just one to eat, and it's a nature preserve anyway. Picking it doesn't really do any harm, but I might as well leave it.
At this, the man looked up from the camera he fiddled with, rolled his eyes in a i-want-you-to-see-this kind of way, and said "yeah, right" sarcastically.
Picking mushrooms is prohibited at the preserve. But why would he suspect I'd be naughty for one little mushroom? Or maybe he knew, as I knew, it didn't matter if I took it or not.
I couldn't really understand what was going on, so I just said a quick goodbye and moved on.
Not far from the grassy spot, I was taking some shots of a pristine looking Cerioporus squamosa when I saw in the distance the grown man I'd just spoken to furiously stomping up and down. He squashed the shaggy mane I'd just photographed.
I saw him gesturing in a "let me explain it to you, because you don't understand" kind of way to the woman as he ground the mushroom beneath his foot.
They then walked on.
I went back to the spot and saw what remained of the destroyed mushroom.
I'm well aware this big man baby hadn't harmed the fungus by squishing its mushroom.
The disrespect and childishness of his anger, though, bothered me.
And why? Why had he done it?
I was so baffled, I almost tracked him down just to ask.
Did he think he knew more, in his utter ignorance on the subject, than myself and think the mushroom was clearly poison?
Did he think the shaggy mane was a psychoactive, psilocybin containing mushroom and didn't want me eating it?
Maybe he just loved birds and hated mushrooms.
I couldn't understand it. How could a birdwatcher be such an immature disgrace to his own love of forests? Why was he so mad at mushrooms and so mad at me for liking them?
I talked it over with other mushroom lovers and several have similar stories of their own.
Everyone had their guesses and some outright explanations.
Some people just think they know mushrooms. How much can there be to know? They firmly believe silly thinks like 'don't touch them, or you'll absorb the poison and die.' They think that there are maybe three or four things to know about mushrooms, that they know those things because they are very smart, and they believe they're helping poor idiots by saving them from the dangerous, unlikable kingdom Fungi.
Sometimes, they just see someone younger than them, and you'd be surprised how many people think everyone in their twenties and thirties are just trying to get high.
As Paul Kroeger, one of my favorite mushroom experts, said,
"People are weird about fungi.
Fungi are weird to people."

A thing I made for the 2018 Floral and Fungi Object Head Zine [[ @objectheadzine ]]~!! 🍄
I think i managed to do this in time before deadline officially hits WHEHH so here we have this little loving couple, what mushrooms they are based on is Honey Fungus and Shaggy Ink Cap.
Here’s a little mushroom fact; honey fungus actually emits bioluminescent light, but with parts which are underground such as their mycelium and so because of that the glow isn’t normally visible.

Art challenge thursday- draw a witchsona based on a mushroom!! Mine was the Shaggy Ink Cap.
Here’s mine-- the Ink Witch.
Her broom is a giant brush that drips in the air after she flies. She uses her ink powers to draw magic circles in the air and carries around ink vials and various brushes/pens but rarely has any paper. I like her a lot and am probably going to make her into an RP character (??)
Check out the squad @caromellarts @0-chikao-0 @crimson-chains @sheilkuroi and @silent-songs for their versions!
