Funguary Feb 18 - Edible Shaggy Ink Cap - Coprinus comatus
The self-aware and self-digesting edible shaggy ink cap can be found only seldomly unlike the mushroom it resembles. It has frequently generated bodhicitta, a spontaneous wish to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. Through acceptance of the nature of cycle and decay, it is has learned to consume and calm the self to attain enlightenment. The opposite of humans, it has attained nirvana first, then transcended birth, old age, disease, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress of mind and weariness.

FOTD #081 : shaggy ink cap! (coprinus comatus)
the shaggy ink cap (also called lawyer's wig or shaggy mane) is an inkcap fungus in the family agaricaceae. it is famous for its pitch-black spore-filled ink !! it is said to often grow in "unexpected" places, & has been recorded in south africa, europe, north america, aotearoa & australia. it is also carnivorous :-)
(learn about carnivorous fungi or the process of deliquescence)
the big question : can i bite it?? yes !! the mushroom is edible when young / before deliquescence.

c. comatus description :
"the shaggy ink cap is easily recognizable from its almost cylindrical cap which initially covers most of its stem. the cap ranges from 4–8 cm (1+5⁄8–3+1⁄8 in) in width & 6–20 cm (2+3⁄8–7+7⁄8 in) in height. it is mostly white with shaggy scales, which are more pale brown at the apex. the free gills change rapidly from white to pink, then to black. it is deliquescent. the white & fairly thick stipe measures 6–40 cm (2–16 in) high by 1–2.5 cm (1⁄2–1 in) in diameter & has a loose ring near the bottom."

Some old mushroom doodles while I try to decide what I can share out of my current sketchbook ~ I finished it but I used a highlighter as the main tool for the last pages... Not ideal for scanning. 😂 These are from a different, watercolor sketchbook and were actually done in July!
Left is a shaggy ink cap and the right is a turkey tail. I really like how the turkey tail came out! The turkey tail is almost entirely Posca except for that deep black (fountain pen) and I can't remember much about the ink cap :Ta I mostly only remember what I was listening to at the time (a Call of Cthulhu one shot), but am pretty sure it was a different brand of paint pens that weren't as opaque.

i've been entertaining myself by taking some before and after pics of fungi around the area. this is a shaggy mane, Coprinus comatus, and the pictures are taken less than 24 hours apart. they're also called ink caps, along with some other mushrooms that look exactly the same to my untrained eye and used to be in the same genus but are apparently not even in the same family. i've never made a single attempt to understand fungus taxonomy and i'm not going to start now

this is a different individual, but a nice example of the "intermediate" stage between the innocent baby popsicle and the withered inky mess in the two pictures above. these things are so short-lived that they're notorious for straight up dissolving shortly after being picked by foragers so it was fairly lucky timing on my part
