ScreenPlay: Road (BBC, 1987)
"Everyone's worried sick for you, you know. You can't just do this!"
"Why not?"
"Oh, come on. We all feel like this some time. But life must go on."
"Why?"
#screenplay#road#alan clarke#jim cartwright#single play#1987#neil dudgeon#jane horrocks#andrew wilde#william armstrong#willy ross#mossie smith#barbara keogh#moya brady#alan david#david thewlis#lesley sharp#susan brown#tim dantay#i throw around the word masterpiece a little too liberally i suspect‚ and have used it several times to describe works by Clarke; but it's#inescapable here. a seminal moment in british television‚ and one of the single greatest play adaptations ever screened‚ simultaneously#fiercely loyal to its stage origins without being tied down or encumbered by them. Cartwright speaks glowingly of Clarke as a collaborator#and it's not hard to see why: his restlessly prowling steadicam moving from derelict house to derelict house allows Road to fulfil its#destiny as wandering theatre‚ something the stage could never quite achieve. a fierce polemic on thatcherite britain and the aching poverty#and waste of a ruined generation. not that this is pure naturalism: a few minutes in Andrew Wilde‚ having tormented his sister‚ turns to#the camera and screams and suddenly you know you're not watching just any old kitchen sink drama‚ this is something different‚ this is some#kind of primal howl. two sinister young men dress in sharp suits ready for a night out; two young girls argue with their respective family#members; an older man reminisces hopelessly about times past; a young man is starving himself to death in a condemned house. and in the#dead centre‚ Lesley Sharp delivers one of the most devastating‚ affecting monologues ever written‚ as she stalks the desolate streets and#tries to keep herself from going mad with the grief and the horror and the pointlessness of it all. tv was a medium created for such scenes

A young man leaves Ireland with his landlord’s daughter after some trouble with her father, and they dream of owning land at the big giveaway in Oklahoma ca. 1893. When they get to the new land, they find jobs and begin saving money. The man becomes a local barehands boxer, and rides in glory until he is beaten, then his employers steal all the couple’s money and they must fight off starvation in the winter, and try to keep their dream of owning land alive. Meanwhile, the woman’s parents find out where she has gone and have come to America to find her and take her back. Credits: TheMovieDb. The Wednesday Play: Stand Up, Nigel Barton (BBC, 1965)
"Everyone's gone to the moon."
"That's this place, all right."
"Some moon."
"Bright and shiny when you're a long way off; cold and rains hard when you get there."
"Who said that?"
"I did!"
"You mean you actually talk like that? It doesn't sound right with your accent."
#stand up‚ nigel barton#stand up nigel barton#the wednesday play#dennis potter#bbc#single play#classic tv#gareth davies#keith barron#jack woolgar#katherine parr#vickery turner#robert mill#janet henfrey#godfrey james#johnnie wade#llewellyn rees#peter madden#barbara keogh#alan lake#patrick kavanagh#an early and formative work for Potter‚ introducing many of the staples he would abide by for the rest of his career: the autobiographical#approach‚ the use of adults to play children‚ the non linear narrative and breaking of the fourth wall. perhaps the first truly remarkable#work from a visionary writer. from the opening scenes you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a fairly standard mid 60s sermon on class#conflict in the kitchen sink mould‚ but then Keith Barron looks directly down the camera and holds your gaze for an uncomfortable few#seconds too many and it's immediately obvious this is something different‚ something new. it is about class‚ of course‚ but it's more too#there's an element of meta narrative‚ in the way the fictional Barton gets caught up in and used by a tv producer who wants to exploit that#very class conscious chip on his soldier; it's as if Potter is interrogating his own motives as he writes‚ trying to balance his own story#(very similar to Nigel's) with the act of telling that story‚ how the one can honour or cheapen the other. perhaps more than any other of#the 60s tv dramatists‚ Potter was forever applying philosophy and psychoanalysis to his work; but his aim was inwards not outwards

Thanks to the heroic work of Catherine Corless, here are the names of the seven hundred and ninety-six children who died in a Tuam mother and baby home run by the Catholic Church in collusion with the government in Ireland, and whose bodies were thrown into a septic tank at the site pictured above.
This was one mother and baby home. There is evidence to suggest that we can expect similar results from the many other Irish mother and baby homes (and this is without talking about Magdalene Laundries).
I’m not putting any of this under a Read More link. I’m just not.

Hammer House of Horror: The Thirteenth Reunion (1.2, ITC, 1980)
"Oh, and Ruth? Get Roland to get a shot of you each week so that the readers can follow your progress."
"Progress? Why do you skeletons assume that cutting everybody down to your size is progress? I'm with Caesar: let me have men that are fat!"
#hammer house of horror#hammer horror#horror tv#The Thirteenth Reunion#1980#Classic TV#Single play#ITC#Jeremy Burnham#peter sasdy#julia foster#Dinah Sheridan#Richard Pearson#Norman Bird#george innes#james cosmo#warren clarke#Gerard Kelly#Michael Latimer#Barbara Keogh#Kevin Stoney#I... Ehhh. With any anthology show you're bound to get a dud ep or two and whilst I know very little about this series (despite as I said#Last time being a big fan of both classic TV and hammer productions) I am going to go ahead and assume this is one of the misfires. The#First ep wasn't great but it was at least its own entity; this feels much more like a Tale of the Unexpected (altho in all fairness that#Show had only started airing the previous year) right down to the rather nasty sting in the tail. The twist or revelation or whatever it is#I spotted literally in the pre credits scene and it hurts the ep that it's so obvious and yet held off as a reveal for so long. A brilliant#Ensemble cast is poorly used but by far the biggest crime is writing a play about a weight loss clinic and having your lead character#Repeatedly described as fat and then AND THEN casting Julia Foster?! She isn't even TV fat or Hollywood chubby or anything I mean there is#Literally nothing of her?! She's tiny?? It absolutely destroys the credibility of the episode and made me scowl at poor Julia who is a#Great actor and deserved a better episode. Clarke and Latimer are both great as usual but both underused. A bit of a mess all round

Dating see each other everyday
When he said he does own a week. According to see him and i want to work together you are both interested in an average week. Should not for supervising and a business. Dating couple months ago. Find it varies. Spending the other every two edged sword. But seeing each other attractive and i just let me everyday, men and then it and more so much can be lit every other.First Corinthians 7:39-40 gives blanket permission for remarriage after the death of one's spouse—although it is not mandatory: A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. Yet in my judgment she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God. Marriage vows are only binding while both parties live. There is no marriage in heaven (Matthew 22:30), so there is no marriage of the dead. In the Old Testament, remarriage after the death of a spouse was usually a matter of children. After Sarah died, Abraham married Keturah who gave him six sons. God supported Levirate marriages (wherein a childless widow married her late husband's brother to provide an heir for her husband) so that a man's property would remain with his descendants and a woman would be cared for by her son (Deuteronomy 25:5-6). This ensured the woman had an option to remarry since, as a widow, she could not provide a political advantage for her father's family. With the advent of the church, women didn't have to remarry after the death of their spouses. The church as Christ's body was impelled to provide for faithful, righteous, elderly widows who had no family support (1 Timothy 5:3-10). In a way, the church was compensating such women for the kingdom work they performed (verse 10). Older widows with family were to be cared for by their family. Younger widows, however, were not to be supported by the church. It was doubted as to whether a young widow could truly dedicate the rest of her life to God and the church, rejecting all possibility of remarrying. (There were exceptions, of course, as in Anna in Luke 2:36-37.) An older widow had a resume of sorts, showing her lifetime of prudent and godly living. Younger women were tempted not only by the thought of marriage, but also by the idleness that comes with financial stability and no direct responsibilities. Since tending a family was one of the very few career choices young women had, it was better they were occupied with that. In a culture where the desire to be married was assumed and, for women, the idea of support without family was nearly impossible, remarriage after a spouse's death was a great attraction on a purely practical level. That is not always the case in modern times. Women do not need the protection and support of a spouse to serve God, and neither do men. The Bible clearly says that widows and widowers are free to remarry, but it does not say if they should. Remarriage is as much a matter for spiritual discernment as the initial marriage. It is good to be married, and it is good to be single. Only God knows which is best for each person.

ALL THE GIRLS I KNOW.mov from Rick Berlin on Vimeo.
It has always been clear to me that the women (and girls) in my life have had enormous consequence and, tho at times oblique, influence on my character, my Self, my sense of who I am. As forgiving and as exacting a magnifying glass, a raised eyebrow, but nevertheless an appreciative sense of my best and worst qualities. A moral compass handheld and unblinking. Inside jokes, existential questions about life, love and truth in all areas, and an unspoken consciousness of the withheld. My Mom, first among them. I would have been lost without these dear souls. Many are here in this video. Some are not. No more room in the edit.
I love you all for how you’ve given life to my weirdness. To all of you I tip my hat and heart.

Special Branch: Miss International (2.4, Thames, 1970)
"Moxon, just a minute! I wanna get this absolutely clear. There has been an attempt, in our opinion, to murder Miss Gemal; there has been an attempt on the life of Chief Inspector Jordan; a so far unidentified imposter has moved into the same room as the girl we are charged with protecting-"
"And?"
"And involved in all of this is this man Devereux, whose file shows he's capable of anything!"
"That is certainly accurate."
"And you are telling us that we are to take no positive action?"
"Precisely."
"Right! I just wanted to get that absolutely straight!"
#special branch#Special branch rewatch#Miss International#classic tv#1970#derren nesbitt#Fulton mackay#Morris Perry#Jasmina hilton#yutte stensgaard#Murray hayne#Barbara keogh#Alfred Bell#Rona bower#Marc Boyle#Richard mcneff#Karen Young#Roy bottomley#Tom brennand#Jim Goddard#I have only vague memories of this series from watching the first time round. Certain episodes did get lodged in my mind tho#The earlier Exit a Diplomat from series 1 was one of them: I remembered it being very good and it was. I also remembered this one but not#I'm sad to say as a good episode. Rewatching it... Well it's not quite as bad as I remember. But it isn't great. Beauty contests seem to#Have been another regular plot idea in old telly (Randall and Hopkirk did it as did The Saint and iirc the sweeney may have done one?) but#It does almost certainly mean an episode of leering from the male heroes and needless chauvinism all round. Well this is no different. I#Can see the appeal of the international beauty contest plot bringing people from all over the world inc potentially from behind the iron#Curtain; but the treatment here is just a bit seedy and unpleasant. Keith Washington seems to have disappeared (perhaps upset at the#Gratuitous sexism in the force?) and I suspect his lines were simply handed over wholesale to one shot assistant Bell.#Some decent setpiece scenes but undoubtedly filler episode and with too many cringing moments of 'phwoar look at her' to be truly enjoyable#Oh but Inman gets so annoyed at Moxon that he kicks the door closed after him (quite badly too). So worth watching if only for that moment
