Creighton’s and Dutton’s Don’t Mix

Request from hardywoman99 on Wattpad, Spencer has a daughter named Elizabeth who has been seeing a boy named James who is the son of Banner Creighton. One night when Spencer gets home he finds the boy in his house and handles the situation

James and I were talking in my bedroom and had been for most of the night since we got out of school early today. I knew my dad Spencer is still out working out on the ranch so I knew we most likely wouldn’t get caught. Laughing at something James said I didn't hear footsteps coming through the house or even tell that it was my father. The bedroom door got kicked open where we both turned our heads around seeing my father Spencer standing in the doorway. "Elizabeth, what the hell is a boy doing in our house!"

"Dad! I didn't think you'd be home for a few more hours." I jumped up scared that he was actually here right now.

James scrambled to his feet, running a hand through his hair since some of it fell in front of his eyes. "Mr. Dutton, we weren't doing anything I swear just talking-"

"Shut your mouth!" My father raised his shotgun up that I didn't know was behind his back. He aimed it at his chest. "Hands in the air and get walkin out the doorway now!"

James didn’t waste time and quickly bolted through the door with my father pushing him down the stairs almost. Thankfully Jacob and Cara were out working the land so we we’re just the ones in the large cabin house. Scurring after the pair I watched him get James out the front door still aiming the firearm at him off the front porch. “Dad, we didn’t do anything except talk.” I attempted to defend him.

“Be quiet, Elizabeth! Now you better Hugh tail your ass out of here or I’ll do the same thing I did to your father Banner. Do you understand?” My father growled seeing the boy run off into the sunset distance climbing onto the horse he rode over on. Spencer turned towards me lowering the firearm in his hand but by the look on his face I knew I was in trouble now. “I thought I made this perfectly clear, Lizzie. That you aren’t supposed to have any boys over here.”

Crossing my arms over my chest I snapped back at him. “We didn’t do anything remotely close to what you and mom do almost all the time.”

“This is not about me and your mother. This is about you bringing a Creighton boy to our ranch!” My father deepened his tone of voice at me.

Rolling my eyes I didn’t understand why he didn’t like James so much. I mean the way my mother Alexandra explained their love story you would think he would want the same sort of fairy tale to happen for me. Yet he’s never given me the chance to find out if that could happen with James or not. “Why don’t you like James, dad?” I asked softly knowing he wouldn’t give me an answer that wasn’t filled with rage.

“Because his father almost killed my entire family and took our ranch from us.” His time dropped lower as he spoke but I could see anger still in his dark eyes that were now focused on me.

Dropping my gaze to the wooden floor I mumbled. “I’m sorry I didn’t know.”

“I know you didn’t, sweetheart. Because I didn’t feel like telling you all that drama that has passed before you were born. I…I don’t want him or anyone in his family bloodline to hurt you.” Spencer slowly walked towards his daughter sitting the shotgun down and without warning pulled her in for a hug.

Wrapping my arms around him I sniffled through some tears hearing footsteps coming through the living room inside. The front door creaked open where he broke the hug barley with me where we could get a glimpse of my mother Alexandra or Alex as my father called her standing there. “Spencer, what is all the noise about. It’s the middle of the night.” She questioned him brushing a hand through her curly blonde locks.

“Nothing to worry about, honey. Just gettin’ a vermon off our property.” He responded to her shifting his gaze downward to me becoming more serious in his words once more. “As for you little Missy. You are grounded and don’t you go riding any horses until I feel that you’ve served your punishment.”

I gasped drawing away from him. “Dad, are you kidding me!”

“Spencer, surely you can do something a little less dramatic.” My mother suggested but he wasn’t having it.

He pointed back towards the staircase sending me off. “Sorry Alex but there isn’t. Go upstairs now.” Stomping my foot on the ground I wouldn’t get over how much I hate that our families were at war.

UNKNOWN RELATIVE Based on the date this was a 2nd generation family member. Had they been born in 1863 that would put them at the age of 20 in 1883. ・Cara Dutton and Jacob Dutton never had any children according to Jack Dutton. We don't see them around the ranch and Cara is constantly corresponding to Spencer Dutton begging him to come home, not a distant son we haven't seen yet. ・Claire Dutton had no remaining children when Mary Abel died it's why she killed herself instead of continuing on. ・That leaves James Dillard Dutton and Margaret Dutton possibly having a child that didn't travel with them? They could have stayed in Tennessee or been overseas with Jacob and Cara in Ireland or Scotland. This option seems to be the only option that has any chance of making sense. March 16, 1863 - ???? Unknown the who, what, where, when and why this Dutton family member existed.

If you are a Yellowstone fan, then you likely already know about 1923. But if you don’t, keep reading! In 2022, it was decided to expand the Yellowstone universe with the release of 1923, a prequel series. The show explores life on the ranch in the 1920s for the early Duttons, especially among a changing climate in Montana. We see the family dealing with issues such as drought, prohibition, cattle theft, and general lawlessness. This is also the time of Montana’s Great Depression, which had already begun here about a decade before the Great Depression hit the rest of the country.

Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton

Harrison Ford is a well known American actor, famous for the Indiana Jones series and his role as Han Solo in Star Wars— among many other roles! In 1923, he plays the role of Jacob Dutton. He is married to Cara Dutton, and together, the couple raise John and Spencer, their nephews, after the deaths of their parents. Their parents were Jacob’s brother James and his sister in law Margaret. After their deaths, Jacob also takes over as the patriarch of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. He works very hard to protect the ranch during the many changes in Montana that begin over the 20th century.

Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton

Helen Mirren is an English actress, and she plays Harrison Ford’s on screen wife, Cara Dutton. Cara Dutton is married to Jacob Dutton, making her the matriarch of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. With her husband, she helps to raise her nephews after their parent’s death, as well as run the ranch. She also works to maintain the family home and keep her family safe and protected. Some of Helen Mirren’s famous roles include parts in The Queen, Hitchcock, and The Madness of King George.

James Badge Dale as John Dutton Sr

James Badge Dale is an American actor. He hails from Manhattan originally, and has had notable roles in Lord of the Flies, The Departed, and Iron Man 3. In 1923, he plays the character of John Dutton Sr. John Dutton Sr. is James and Margaret Dutton’s son— one of the nephews that are raised by Jacob and Cara Dutton after the deaths of his parents. He is married to Emma Dutton, and the couple has a son named Jack. John Dutton Sr. helps with running the ranch until his death, when he is killed by a rival sheep herder named Banner Creighton.

Marley Shelton as Emma Dutton

Marley Shelton is an American actress. Besides her role in 1923, she has been seen in Never Been Kissed, Rampage, and Valentine. She was also Judy Hicks in the Scream franchise! In 1923, she plays Emma Dutton, the wife of Jacob and Cara’s nephew John Dutton Sr. Emma Dutton is also the mother of Jack Dutton. On the ranch, she typically helped out by tending to the house and feeding the animals. After her husband’s murder, she is left very depressed and hopeless, and ends up committing suicide.

Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton

Brandon Skelnar is an American actor who originally hails from Dover, New Jersey. He can also be seen in roles such as Temple and Westworld, besides his role on 1923. HE plays Spencer Dutton on 1923. Spencer Dutton is the youngest son of James and Margaret Dutton, making him John Dutton Sr.’s younger brother. Along with his brother, he was raised by his uncle and aunt, Jacob and Cara Dutton, after his parents’ death. He worked in Africa as a big game hunter, but then returned to the ranch after Cara begged him to come home. He’s married to a British woman that he met in Africa, whose name is Alexandra.

Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra

Julia Schlaeper is an AMerican actress who plays Alexandra in 1923. She is fairly new to acting, but has had some roles before this, including in American Horror Story. Her character is a British woman who met Spencer Dutton while he was working in Africa. She was there traveling. She and Spencer had an immediate attraction, so she left her fiance for him. Spencer and Alexandra are now married.

Darren Mann as Jack Dutton

Darren Mann is a Canadian actor. He’s had roles in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Animal Kingdom. He has also written and produced a film called Windfall himself! On the show, he plays the role of Jack Dutton. Jack Dutton is the son of John Dutton Sr. and Emma Dutton. He helps out on the ranch as well as most of his family, and is dedicated to his job. He is also married to Elizabeth Strafford, the daughter of another rancher.

Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Dutton

Michelle Randolph is an American actress. She has had roles in The Resort and The Undertaker’s Wife, among some others, but is relatively new to acting. She plays Elizabeth Dutton, who used to be Elizabeth Strafford, in 1923. She is the daughter of ranchers Bob and Beverly Strafford. She spent a lot of her younger years on the ranch as she was growing up, but then was sent east for schooling. She is now married to Jack Dutton.

Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton

Jerome Flynn is an English actor who has had many roles, including on Game of Thrones, Black Mirror, and John Wick 3. He plays the character Banner Creighton in 1923. Banner Creighton is the enemy of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. He is a Scottish sheepherder who often trespasses with his sheep onto the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch land to feed his animals there, which causes strife between the two parties. Along with Donals Whitfield, Banner Creighton tries to take down the Duttons and their ranch. He is also the one who kills John Dutton Sr.

Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield

Timothy Dalton is a British actor who has had roles that include parts in Flash Gordon and Jane Eyre. He plays Donald Whitfield in 1923. Donald Whitlfield is a crooked businessman who buys the Strafford Ranch. He also works with Banner Creighton to try to bring an end to the Duttons and the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Brian Geraghty as Zane

Brian Geraghty is an American actor woh you may have seen in roles such as The Hurt Locker or Boardwalk Empire. He plays Zane in 1923, who is the ranch foreman at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. He is extremely loyal to the Dutton family, even if he is not a blood relative like many of the others working on the ranch.

Robert Patrick as Sheriff William McDowell

Robert Patrick is an American actor who has had many parts over the years. For instance, he has acted in Die Hard 2, Terminator 2, and True Blood— among many other projects! Typically, he plays either an authority figure or a villain. In 1923, he plays an authority figure— the sheriff, Sheriff William McDowell. He is the local sheriff where the show takes place, and is a good friend of Jacob Dutton, the patriarch of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater

Aminah Nieves is an American actress. She is new to the acting world, but still has some credits under her belt. She has starred in projects such as Blueberry, Dogwood, and V/H/S/99. In the 1923 tv show, Aminah Nieves plays the character of Teonna Rainwater. Teonna Rainwater is a Native American girl who attends the government boarding school for Native Americans, which is run by Catholic priests and nuns. They abuse many of the students in attendance, Teonnah included. She is emotionally, physically, and sexually abused at the school. Luckily, she is able to escape after killing two of her abusers and disguises herself as a boy as she tries to return to her reservation.

Jennifer Ehle as Sister Mary

Jennifer Ehle is an American actress who has has roles such as parts in The King’s Speech and Pride and Prejudice, among others. She plays Sister Mary O’Connor in 1923. Sister Mary teaches at the school that Teonna attended, and is one of her abusers. She fears Father Renaud, the headmaster of the school, and is also very strict with her students, often beating them. When Teonna escapes, she fights back and kills Sister Mary by beating her with a bag of books and strangling her.

Sebastian Roché as Father Renaud

Sebastian Roché is a French and Scottish actor who has become well known for roles that include The Man In the High Castle, Odyssey 5, and Supernatural. He is a stage actor as well. Of course, he is also one of the actors on the television series 1923. Here, he plays Father Renaud. Father Renaud is a Catholic priest who is the headmaster of the government boarding school for Native Americans attended by Teonna Rainwater. He is very cruel and often beats the students, or punishes them in other harsh and inhumane ways.

Grimma has always said that being a hero is a choice. Creighton can only assume this is what he means.

The cold Cybunny knight has the strength and skill to take down a dozen men without breaking a sweat, but a dozen and one is when things start to get fuzzy. And two dozen is right out. And that’s precisely what he’d been attacked by. Here he lay, disoriented and breathless, bleeding and broken everywhere, the few remaining bandits that had ambushed him looking down upon him with murder in their eyes.

Or, at least, they were, before Grimma stepped between them.

Little Grimma, a pauper to any prince, with his little sword he hardly knows how to use and a fire in his eyes that can’t be snuffed by winds of fear. His stance strong, clumsily-footed but bravely poised, he brandishes his sword and calls out for the bandits to flee.

And Creighton is scared — fears for Grimma’s life. This is no sparring match, no target dummy on castle grounds, no tentacle monster from the swamp. These are real, flesh-and-blood murderers, cold and cruel, with only one thought in their heads:

To kill.

If it were any other time, Creighton would use this terrified adrenaline to rise to his shaking feet, take his axe in his hand, and protect his friend with the last of his life. He would defend him, fight tooth and nail, even from within the jaws of death.

Because that’s what a knight would do.

That’s what a hero would do.

The hero that Grimma wants to be, and is currently being in this moment.

So then… would it be wrong to let him revel in it?

…

A split decision, then Creighton’s using this opportunity to heal himself rather than fight, slinking away from the impending battle on battered, broken limbs. “You pricks ‘ad better watch out!” he calls to the bandits. “He’ll slaughter the lot of ya! I know he can!”

You can do it, Grimma.

Be a hero.

Where Is 1923 Filmed?

1923 is the prequel for Yellowstone, following the saga of the Duttons in Montana in the early 1920s. It premiered in December 2022, and has already amassed a loyal following! It not only has great writing and a star-studded cast, but a fantastic variety of scene locations that really help to breathe life into the story. Showrunner Taylor Sheridan does not use visual or special effects, but instead tries to “shoot [the] corners of the world that people haven’t seen”.

Read on to learn about the many filming locations for the show!

Where is 1923 Filmed?

Most of the filming for the show took place in Montana, where the show does mostly take place. However, there is also some filming that occurred in areas like Malta, South Africa, and Tanzania. Most Montana scenes were shot in Butte, while many of Spencer’s scenes were shot in Africa before his return to the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

1923 Filming Locations in Montana

As mentioned above, many of the Montana scenes were filmed in Butte, Montana, at many different landmarks in town. Of course, the state of Montana was the perfect backdrop for the story of 1923! Filming there also ended up being a huge boost to the local economy. Read on to learn in more detail about each of the Montana filming locations for the show.

Butte

The production crew repainted the whole city of Butte for filming, which helped get the old fashioned vibe across that was needed for the show. Uptown Butte was used as the city of Bozeman in 1923. The boxing ring in episode 1, for instance, was at the corner of Broadway and Hamilton Streets. Butte is a cool, historic town with features such as coal and copper mines.

Butte KMBF Radio Station

Another filming location was the Butte KMBF radio station in Carpenter’s Hall, in the town of Butte. It was used for the town hall in 1923, where the Livestock Association meeting occurs. The inside of the building was transformed for these scenes! The staff of the radio station were thrilled to have the cast and crew in the building for the show, and were also happy that the space was renovated and historically accurate.

Butte Civic Center

The Butte Civic Center was another of the filming locations for the show in the town of Butte. It was also one of the most important filming locations! It is a 7500 seat multipurpose arena that opened in the 1950s. It was the home of several different sets built by the crew, and many different scenes were able to be filmed here on those sets.

Butte Sheriff’s Department

Another of the many Butte, Montana filming locations was the Butte Sheriff’s Department. Can you guess what sorts of scenes were filmed here, or what the building was used for on the show? It makes sense that the Bozeman’s Sheriff Department scenes for 1923 were filmed here, and that’s exactly what the space was used for.

A-GameZ Cards & Collectibles

The A-GameZ Cards & Collectibles shop was another filming location for 1923, but it was transformed for the show. The crew turned the exterior of this shop into a different business for the show. They turned it into the Silver Dollar Soda Shop. The soda shop first appeared in the very first episode of 1923. It can be seen in a scene where women are outside for a prohibition protest, and they warn Jacob Dutton not to enter the store.

Butte City Court

Like the Butte Sheriff’s Department, the Butte City Court is another filming location that did not have to change its purpose. It was also the filming location for the town of Bozeman’s City Court on 1923. It is the courthouse where Banner Creighton’s trial is held in the episode titled “Nothing Left to Lose”.

Thornton Building

The Thornton Building was the filming location for a bank in town. It was the First Bank of Montana on 1923. Fans of the show may remember it as the spot where Jacob Dutton attempted to get a loan so that he could feed his cattle. These days, though, the Thornton Building is actually a former hotel, and is available to lease as office space!

Chief Joseph Ranch, Darby

Just like on the Yellowstone tv show, 1923 was filmed at the Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby. It was built between 1914 and 1917, so it fit in perfectly with the timeline of the show— plus, this is Yellowstone’s origin story, so it also fit with continuity! The ranch is owned and operated by the rancher Shane Libel, as well as his family.

Anaconda Rifle and Pistol Club, Anaconda

This is another filming location that was not in Butte, Montana— one of the few! The Anaconda Rifle and Pistol Club, located in Anaconda, Montana, was where some of the government boarding school filming took place. For example, this was where the sheds that were seen at the school were filmed. The government boarding school was a school that Native American children were forced to attend, under the eye of Catholic priests and nuns.

Daly Mansion

The Daly Mansion was the spot where the crew filmed scenes that depicted crooked businessman Donald Whitfield’s house. The Daly Mansion is a 19th century Victorian mansion that has 50 rooms, including 25 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, and 7 fireplaces. It was first seen in episode 4, when Banner Creighton visits to strike up a plan to run the Dutton family. The building is also seen in the Yellowstone show. There, it is the Governor’s mansion.

Rock City, Valier

Rock City, Valier, is another of the non Butte filming locations. It is the remote location where Teonna hides from a wolf after escaping the boarding school. Later, she wakes up in the midst of many sheep, and Hank vows to help her reunite with her family.

1923 Filming Locations In Africa

A majority of Spencer and Amexandra’s storyline was shot in Africa, as this is where they met, and where Spencer was living before their return to help on the family ranch. Take a look below to learn about the spots where these scenes for 1923 were filmed. Apparently, most were filmed during the pandemic, which made logistics very tricky!

Tanzania & Serengeti National Park

One of the first spots in Africa where 1923 filming took place was in Tanzania and at the Serengeti National Park. This was where a lot of Spencer’s storyline was filmed, due to his role as a big game hunter. The national park area was used for lots of the wildlife scenes, as well as some of the safari camps and b roll.

Umgeni Steam Railway

The Umgeni Steam Railway was also known as the Inchanga Choo Choo. It was where the 1923 crew filmed Spencer’s train ride in episode 2 of the show. This railway is the heart and home of steam locomotive preservation in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.

Kearsney Manor, KwaZulu Natal North Coast

Another of the African filming locations for the show is Kearsney Manor, on the KwaZulu Natal North Coast. This was the building that served as the grand Stanely Hotel on the show. It is also where Spencer and Alexandra met for the very first time. The property was built in the 1800s by Sir James Liege Hulett. It was recently renovated and is also listed as a Heritage site.

Kalk Bay

Kalk Bay is the final African filming location for Spencer and Alexandra’s storyline in 1923. This is where the harbor scene was filmed, when Spencer and Alexandra are departing from Africa on an old fashioned tugboat. On the show, they are meant to be leaving Mombassa. Kalk Bay is a real life fishing village where the cast and crew were lucky enough to film.

1923 Filming Locations in Malta

Malta was even used as a backdrop for some of the scenes in 1923. It stood in for Sicily— while Spencer and Alexandra were in Sicily, the scenes were actually filmed in Malta. Read on to learn about the filming locations for the show in Malta!

Fort Manoel, Gżira

Spencer and Alexandra go to Sicily on their way back to the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Fort Manoel, Giza was one of the filming locations for these scenes. They ate at a romantic outdoor cafe, and this is where that scene was filmed.

Grand Harbor in Valletta

Season 1, episode 8 of the show was filmed in Grand Harbor, Valletta. This is where Spencer and Alexandra board a gorgeous cruise ship to begin the trip to London.The on screen docks were the Grand Harbor! This episode is also the season finale.

RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, California

Technically, this scene was not filmed in Malta. The Majestic, the cruise ship Spencer and Alexandra travel on in episode 8, is actually the RMS Queen Mary. Many of the scenes on the cruise ship were actually filmed on the RMS Queen Mary— which is now a museum and tourist attraction moored in Long Beach, California!
