Summary

The origin of mandibulate arthropods can be traced back to the Cambrian period to several carapace-bearing arthropod groups, but their morphological diversity is still not well characterized. 

Here, we describe Balhuticaris voltae, a bivalved arthropod from the 506-million-year-old Burgess Shale (Marble Canyon, British Columbia, Canada). This species has an extremely elongated and multisegmented body bearing ca. 110 pairs of homonomous biramous limbs, the highest number among Cambrian arthropods, and, at 245 mm, it represents one of the largest Cambrian arthropods known. Its unusual carapace resembles an arch; it covers only the frontalmost section of the body but extends ventrally beyond the legs. Balhuticaris had a complex sensory system and was probably an active swimmer thanks to its powerful paddle-shaped exopods and a long and flexible body. 

Balhuticaris increases the ecological and functional diversity of bivalved arthropods and suggests that cases of gigantism occurred in more arthropod groups than previously recognized.

I made a Simic Hybrid Cleric based off of a Cambrian Arthropod that was described this year, Balhuticaris Voltae, because I think it looks like a nun. I did technically create her character portrait, but didn't draw her from the ground up, using a base character model from Magic Poser, a wood grain texture that I re-purposed as a texture for watered silk, a pre existing image of Umberlee's symbol, and elements from the following diagrams and scientific illustrations by Domenic Penetta and Alejandro Izquierdo-López.

I have yet to get this character approved by any DM, mostly because everyone I know who has experience DM-ing is perpetually busy, and I have a god awful sleep schedule that nobody shares.

I like weird cambrian critters. And I recently learned of this one existing. Apparently it looked so much like a pokémon to me that it made me - for the first time in my life - try my hand at pixel art. And I'll definitely continue working with this style, it's fun.

Balhuticaris belongs to a group of 500 million-year-old carapace-bearing arthropods known as hymenocarines. hymenocarines are probably early mandibulates, the group that contains crustaceans, myriapods, and insects. its eyes are bilobate, allowing Balhuticaris to calculate distances better than its kin
