#back with more ambrosius thoughts!
Text
Thinking thoughts about Ambrosius’s decision to try to kill Nimona… while this choice is certainly not a good one, it does make a sad sort of sense. He doesn’t know Nimona, not really. He’s faced off with her, sure, but his main impression of her is of a terrifying monster intent on killing. He doesn’t know her as a person, has never even properly met her. (Nobody truly knows her, but Ballister knows her best, at least, and seems to be one of the only people in the kingdom who understands that she’s more than a mindless weapon.) From Ambrosius’s perspective, though, there seems to be every reason to kill her.
This choice is doubly reinforced by his sense of loyalty and the desire to prove himself. Loyalty is an important theme in the story, and Ambrosius’s loyalties lie chiefly with Ballister, the person he seems to care about most, and the director, the closest he ever had to a parental figure. He also has an intense desire to prove himself to both of them - to prove that he really does care about Ballister and wants to protect him, and to prove that he’s capable of being a good knight and defending his kingdom.
Ambrosius is… rather insecure. He has very low self-esteem, and has always seen himself as lesser compared to Ballister, not as worthy as him or as good at jousting, even going so far as to bitterly tell Ballister he was always “better, without hardly even seeming to try.” And it’s possible that Ambrosius feels indebted to the director - who knows what might have happened to him if he hadn’t been taken in by the institution, and he owes his status as king’s champion to her. (Not that that’s a good thing, of course, but even so - she did still skyrocket him to victory and fame.)
At this point in time Ambrosius is still the director’s puppet. From an outside perspective it’s obvious that her intentions are nefarious, but when you’ve been manipulated by someone for most of your life, maybe even as long as you can remember, you… don’t necessarily know that. Ambrosius is still deeply under her influence, to the point that he still desperately craves her validation and approval even when she deliberately hurts him. She’s explicitly ordered him to kill Nimona, so that’s what he has to do so he doesn’t fail in her eyes.
There’s a sad irony in the parallels between Ambrosius and Nimona and the cycle they unintentionally perpetuate - two people raised as weapons in cruel institutions, used against their will to hurt people they cared about, now trying to kill one another. He might not know her backstory, but he can certainly see how she’s being used as a weapon now. And in the moment when he lifts his sword and attempts the killing blow, he too is a weapon. Does he see himself in her, perhaps? Does he subconsciously recognize that they’re the same in that regard? Is his firm belief that she’s dangerous born from the way he sees himself?
When he tries to kill her, is he trying to kill part of himself?

I read the comic in one sitting less than an hour after finishing the movie, and wow I have many Thoughts™.
- It's very obvious the two versions were meant to cater to different audiences AND tell different messages. I don't get why people are going "But the comic was better! It had more nuance!" just because Nimona was easier to root for in the movie.
- The comic was written back when ND Stevenson was still trying to process a lot of stuff, so all the characters are morally grey/straight up evil and the climactic battle is between a Ballister who regrets turning against Nimona, even if it was to save others vs. a Nimona who's too hurt to care if her lashing out was going to hurt innocent people.
- By the time Nimona got a movie adaptation, ND was a lot more secure in his sexuality, so the climactic battle was Nimona vs. the Director, the symbol of religious oppression and bigotry. It's not just about your friends turning on you because you're "too much" for them anymore, it's also about a society that would rather bring itself to the brink of ruin than coexist with you.
- (I totally get why people were upset about Ballister's surname change, though. Like come on, the media dubbing him Blackheart just to be mean was RIGHT THERE).
- Nimona's metaphor for not shifting is such a neurodivergent thing. Even in the comic, Nimona's parents insisting she's a monster who replaced their daughter is reminiscent of the changeling myth, which is what many parents thought their neurodivergent kids were—changelings who replaced their "real" children.
- Ambrosius being trained to cut off HIS BOYFRIEND'S WHOLE FUCKING ARM instead of merely disarming him is a very cop thing to do. As much as cops claim they're trained to de-escalate situations, their training still teaches them to treat everyone as a potential threat, and that level of constant vigilance can turn anyone into a trigger-happy/arm-choppy bastard. Even the Director, who can use a sword but probably hasn't actually fought someone in ages, STILL can't see Ballister reaching for the squire's phone without assuming he has a weapon.
- And on that note, the Queen getting killed simply because she was trying to reform the Institution and allow commoners to become knights? That's the best "no such thing as a good cop" metaphor I've seen. Because even if there ARE good cops and they ARE in leadership positions, the system will crush them before they make any meaningful change. It's not a good institution that turned rotten, it's an institution that only exists to spread its rot and refuses to be good.
- That's why Ballister's characterisation is so different in the movie vs. the comic. Comic Ballister had 15 years to come to terms with his trauma and the Institution's evildoing, while Movie Ballister is still freshly traumatised and hasn't found a way to define himself beyond the role he was assigned by the Institution.
- Not to mention Comic Ambrosius was not very noble to begin with and genuinely believed Ballister was better suited to villainy than heroism, while Movie Ambrosius never wanted the glory that came with his lineage in the first place and only antagonised Ballister because of indoctrination he needed to unlearn (which he did, all by himself, after witnessing the lengths the Director will go to just to kill Nimona).
- It really shows how important it is to surround yourself with loved ones who are open to change. Comic Ambrosius can love Ballister all he wants, but he'll still blast his arm off because he thinks Ballister deserved it anyway. Movie Ambrosius will stop to question what "the right thing" even means, even if he didn't love Ballister enough to defend him unconditionally.
I have so many more thoughts bubbling beneath the surface, but I'll probably address them some other day. In conclusion:
Tumblr media

Watch Nimona. This is not a request.
Edit: Added more thoughts!

Welcome back to Tumblr's Poorest Wettest Saddest Littlest Meow Meow Competition! Before we announce the final verdict, let's see how our "lovely" contestants are doing backstage!
VRISKA SERKET, hailing from welcoming Homestuck, is in the blue corner! She's a TROLL, a TELEPATH, and a THIEF. She has also attained GODHOOD, and I'm informed she did nothing wrong! Just off the heels of a dramatic loss in the recent Tumblrwoman Election, she deeply resents being trapped in this narrative device!
Her attire today is plain by Earth standards, but well put-together by ALTERNIAN ones. Nevertheless, she has been known to dress up on occasion, particularly in the colors of her ANCESTOR, the Marquise Spinneret Mindfang!
She is extraordinarily determined, and extremely manipulative. She will do anything she can to make herself into the hero her story needs, consequences be damned. Her actions have made her the source of eternal, vitriolic discourse. Some believe her entirely justified, some believe her a heartless villain, and others believe everything in between; every one steadfast and passionate about their specific stance! Love her or hate her: VRISKA!!!!!!!!
HARRIER DU BOIS, also known as HARRY, sometimes referring to himself as RAPHAEL AMBROSIUS COSTEAU or THE REINCARNATION OF KRAS MAZOV, is here representing scenic Disco Elysium! He is a DETECTIVE, an ALCOHOLIC, a recent AMNESIAC, and a WASTE of ENERGY. Having just recently recovered from an attempt at drinking himself to death, we thought inviting him to compete might raise his spirits some! Unfortunately he does not seem to be totally aware of his surroundings, as he has already tried to touch himself twice on air!
His garish and mismatched clothes are STAINED with seemingly every substance a human body can produce. His face is locked in an EXPRESSION that can only induce disgust and discomfort in those who view it.
The few memories he can draw from his fractured mind paint him as violent, selfish, cruel, and pitiful. He has been trying to get over a breakup for six years, and has only partially succeeded through near-total retrograde amnesia. Worst of all, he's still somehow a decently successful cop. He has no friends and few allies on Revachol, with perhaps the sole exception of the impossibly patient and composed Lt. Kim Katsuragi. Even among his fans, you'd be hard pressed to find one who'd defend him, and ever harder pressed to find one willing to stand in the same room as him. Nevertheless, from the safe distance of fiction, let's hear it for HARRY!
In but a few moments, the doors in front of them will open, and they will be able to approach the trophy onto which we have engraved the name of the winner. 5… 4… 3… 2…
AND THE WINNER IS: VRISKAAAAAAAA SERKET!
Vriska: WH8T THE FUCK.
Vriska: WHAT THE F8CK!!!!!!!!
Vriska: I WON THIS????????
Vriska: You pieces of shit can't supp8rt me to win ag8inst some lanky rain8bow-drinking 8itch, 8ut 8eat one-in-fuck8ng 16777216 odds to win poorest, wettest, saddest, littlest g8ddamn meow8east?
Logic [Easy:Success]: She won. That means we lost.
Conceptualization [Challenging:Failure]: Another loss in a long, long line of losses.
Pain Threshold: You've gotten used to the feeling by now. Losing something barely even hurts anymore.
Endurance: You still carry each one with you. Well, except…
Volition: Not now. Not yet.
Authority [Medium:Success]: This doesn't have to stay a loss. Stare the girl down. Challenge her. Don't let this be taken from you.
Wait, what *is* she doing, anyway?
Perception: The grey girl seems to be shouting at someone, but there's no one else here.
Vriska: FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU
Inland Empire [Godly:Success]: The unseen audience, the string-pullers of fate. The sadistic writer terrorizing their creation. The storybook itself, the confines it sets. She has seen the death of the author, and needs more.
Empathy [Medium:Failure]: What's got her so upset?
Harry: Is there something wrong with you?
Vriska: I'm not taking that from a walking dumpster, asshole!
Suggestion: There's still time to fix this. Say something nice, quickly.
Harry: I just mean, you seem upset. I thought you'd be celebrating your win. It’s a big accomplishment, right?
Vriska: Are you kidding?
Drama: Are we, sire? Should we be, perhaps?
Vriska: You thought I’d 8e cele8r8ing this? A vote for the most pitia8le, pathetic person in paradox space? I’m not so desper8 to fill my pity quadrant that I need to resort to CROWDFUNDING! That’s like the lowest form of 8egging!
Electrochemistry: You are that desperate. Don’t think we're above begging for it, piggy.
Conceptualization [Easy:Success]: Oh. This was not a contest one wants to win. Maybe our loss was for the best.
Vriska: And I WON!!!!!!!! With this kind of competition, HOW did I get all the votes? All of them!
Reaction Speed [Trivial:Success]: "This kind of competition?" She’s talking about you! Say something!
Harry: It was a tight race. You fought with honor.
Vriska: IT SH8ULDN’T HAVE FUCKIN8 8EEN!
Vriska: Look at you! What the fuck kind of su8juggl8or suit are you wearing? Did someone 8leed on it?
Savoir Faire: No, no, this outfit is *cool*. You just have to give it a little *disco*, man.
Strike a pose.
Vriska: …
Vriska: You can’t seriously think any of that is appealing.
Vriska: Your clothes look like they were dragged out of 8 different gar8age 8ins.
Vriska: You couldn’t 8e more greasy and stained if you drowned in a pail of 8rooding slurry. From the st8 of your body, you actually might have!
Physical Instrument: I told you. You need to cultivate more mass.
Composure [Challenging:Failure]: Please, don’t start crying in front of a teenager.
You realize that you already have.
Vriska: Are you seriously crying right now? I might not 8e an expert on the human metamorphological process 8ut you definitely aren’t a pupa anymore. Shit, you look like you’re halfway dead already. Grow up, Pupa Pan!
Endurance: You need to stop this, now, before you break down further.
Harry: Fuck off, fucking spidery bitch! Leave me alone!
Vriska: Wow. I don’t think I’ve seen a grown man act this pathetic 8efore. How the hell did you not win this!?!?!?!? Do you even have a single thing going for you?
Esprit De Corps: You have a badge and a gun. You are a Detective Lieutenant-Yefreitor of the RCM. At least for now, you have that.
Harry: I’m a pretty good fucking cop.
Vriska: There are no good cops you dum8 8itch!
Authority: Make her stop.
Vriska: I’ve known you less than a minute and you already disgust me. I feel 8ad for the people that actually have to 8e near you.
Half Light: Do what you have to do and do it now.
Vriska: You deserved to win this. I don’t know how you can live like that. 8ack home you would have 8een culled sweeps ago.
Hand Eye Coordination [Legendary:Success]: You have never fired a shot so quickly or instinctually. You didn’t even know your gun was loaded. You pulled it out the way a cat scratches a hand, or a drunk pisses himself. You don’t remember when violence became second nature to you, but you didn’t forget how to do it either.
Harry: Oh, God.
Perception (Sight): Is that blood… blue?
Visual Calculus [Legendary:Success]: Light swirls and shimmers around the girl’s body, flashing a technicolor code you cannot decipher. Her body floats into the air, and her eyes flash open. All eight of them.
Inland Empire: No justice. No heroism. Just mindless violence.
Half Light: RUN.
Vriska: OW!
Vriska: Oh no you fucking don’t!!!!!!!!
(♏) Volition [Impossible:Failure]: You try to run, but your will is seemingly powerless to drive your body. I’m sorry.
Physical Instrument: Don’t look at me. I’m in great shape.
Interfacing: Connections seem fine. Don’t tell me we have to unplug him again…
♏Vriska♏: What the fuck.
Harry: Wh-wh-what are you doing to me?
Vriska: Shut up I’m trying to f8cus!
Inland Empire: Welcome, Thief of Light.
♏Vriska♏: What the hell is wrong with you?
Encyclopedia: Severe alcoholism. Retrograde amnesia. Partial facial paralysis. Dehydration. Heart palpi- (♏)
♏Vriska♏: 8e quiet, 8ook8rain! I’m trying to rifle through memories here and it’s a MESS!
Interfacing: We haven’t quite organized since our recent… restructuring. Try the thought cabinet.
Rhetoric: Don’t tell her that!
♏Vriska♏: Too late, sucker! Found it!
♏Vriska♏: …
♏Vriska♏: …
♏Vriska♏: …
♏Vriska♏: Jegus christ.
♏Vriska♏: In pu8lic? Why would you—
♏Vriska♏: Ugh!
♏Vriska♏: You said THAT?
♏Vriska♏: There was a8solutely no reason to do ANY of that, what the hell!
♏Vriska♏: You should honestly just kill yourself if you’re going to keep 8eing such a fuckup!
Reaction Speed: Yes!
Logic: Sound. You should kill yourself.
Empathy: It would make everyone feel better.
Endurance: Hasn’t this all gone on long enough?
Savoir Faire: It’s a hell of a statement.
Drama: The noble sacrifice, like Romeo, like Juliet!
Rhetoric: You should kill yourself NOW!
Authority: She has bested you. Listen to your better.
Half Light: Anything to get away from her.
Volition: …
♏Vriska♏: Can you creeps 8e normal for two damn seconds?
MORALE CRITICAL
The light fades from your eyes, and you fall to the floor.
Shivers: You are being called back where you belong....
Kim: Yes, Lieutenant. A fascinating dream. I’m sorry you did not win the competition.
Harry: What do you think it means, Kim? Do you think it could be some kind of message? Should I try to find that girl?
Kim: “That girl?”
Harry: Yeah! Vriska!
Kim: No, Lieutenant. I do not think you should go looking for Vriska Serket from Homestuck. Perhaps try looking for the killer in our murder case?

Nachos (a Nimona fanfic)
Summary: Nimona tags along on Ballister's nacho date with Ambrosius (set post-movie)
Warnings: A couple swears and that's about it
Word count: 1,050
Fluff with a tiny bit of angst
Author notes: Thanks you to @skating-is-cool for scheming with me on my other post about this. I didn't put loads of effort into this if I'm honest but I let the boys finally have their nachos together.
"You promise to behave?" Ballister asked nervously, refusing to go inside until Nimona agreed. The shapeshifter had been begging to come along with him to his date with Ambrosius. Ballister had reluctantly agreed, knowing that if he'd told her no she would've snuck along anyway. Nimona shrugged, rocking back and forth on her heels.
"I dunno. Maybe." She shot him a grin full of fangs, almost falling over before catching her balance again and leaning forward onto her tiptoes.
"Nimona, please," Ballister sighed, exasperation clawing at the inside of his skull as he brought a hand to his face to rub across his eyes. "This is the first time since…everything that me and Ambrosius have actually been able to go on a date." Ballister struggled to articulate it to her. Mentally, he understood that Nimona was over a thousand years old and had probably seen many people be in love. But he also had latched onto her as some kind of younger sibling or daughter to him, which meant he had to explain everything. "Because we've left the army now, I don't have to hide who I am as much. You should understand that."
"Yeah, I suppose so," Nimona replied, flashing him another smile. "C'mon then, let's go see your boyfriend." Ballister made to grab her shoulder before she headed into the bar but she weaved away from him, slipping through the door into the bar. Ballister gritted his teeth before following Nimona, a certain air of anxiety around him. He knew that Ambrosius still loved him, that hadn't changed. But would it be awkward? The last time they were here Ambrosius was trying to convince him to kill Nimona. Ballister mulled over his thoughts as he followed Nimona through the bar, not paying much attention to his surroundings.
"Hey handsome." Ballister jerked out of his thoughts at Ambrosius' voice, looking down at his lover. Ambrosius smiled softly up at him, moving over in the booth seat to make room for him. Ballister shot him a shy smile in return, sitting down beside him while Nimona took the seat across from him.
"You're sure you don't mind she's here?" Ballister whispered, resting his head on Ambrosius' shoulder.
"She's family, it's not like she wouldn't be here," Ambrosius responded, pressing a light kiss to the top of Ballister's head. Ballister closed his eyes, relishing in the feeling of safety. It hadn't been long since the queen had died but it felt like years of being on edge constantly.
"You know I can hear you two, right?" Nimona butted into the conversation and Ballister opened his eyes again, regarding her with a deadpan stare.
"You know you could let us be romantic together every now and then?" He retorted, earning a snort of laughter from Ambrosius. Nimona stuck her tongue out at him before turning her attention to something over his shoulder. She transformed into a mouse, scuttling across the table.
"Be back soon." Ballister sighed with relief, visibly sagging in his seat. As much as he loved Nimona, it did feel more than a little weird having her third-wheeling on his date. After all, she was like a daughter to him. And although he wanted to spend time with her, it felt strange to have her on his date with Ambrosius.
"May I get you anything sirs?" A waitress appeared almost out of thin air beside them.
"Nachos," the two of them said in unison.
"No olives. He's allergic," Ballister added, jerking a thumb at Ambrosius. The waitress nodded, walking away.
"You always have to specify, don't you?" Ambrosius teased, playfully poking Ballister in the side. Ballister laughed quietly, wrapping his prosthetic arm around Ambrosius' waist.
"I can't have you dying. Who would continue the Gloreth bloodline?" Ballister joked with a gentle squeeze to Ambrosius' hip. Ambrosius practically doubled over with laughter, banging his fist on the table a couple of times.
"Shit, Bal, you think I'd actually continue the bloodline?" Ambrosius questioned, eyes slightly teary from laughter as he looked up at Ballister. "The closest thing to a child that anyone is getting from me is Nimona. We are adopting her, right? I mean, I get she's technically older than us but she's still a child, you know?" Ballister placed a gentle kiss against Ambrosius' cheek.
"Yeah, if she's fine with it. I haven't asked her yet," Ballister told him, withdrawing his hand from its position around his lover, fidgeting with his hands under the table. The two of them fell into silence, something that had rarely happened in the time they'd known one another. The waitress returned, placing their bowls of nachos on the table and Ballister didn't know what to do.
"I'm sorry." Ambrosius broke the silence. Ballister glanced towards him, noticing the tear tracks down his cheeks. He was honestly unsure if they were from laughter or not. "I'm so sorry I didn't trust you. Or Nimona." Ballister placed his hand over Ambrosius', the dark metal contrasting against his light skin. "I didn't even try to listen to you when you explained."
"It's not your fault," Ballister assured him.
"But it is. If I'd listened, if I'd tried to help then maybe it wouldn't have turned out this way." Ambrosius skimmed his thumb across the back of Ballister's hand. "If I could then I'd change it all." Ballister brushed the tears away from Ambrosius' eyes, turning in his seat to face him.
"But if that happened then we wouldn't have our family," Ballister pointed out, pulling Ambrosius into a hug. The two of them sat there in the booth for a while, feeling grateful that despite everything they still had one another.
"These nachos are delicious, I see why you both keep coming back here." Ballister pulled away from Ambrosius slightly, glaring at Nimona. She was lying slightly across the other side of the booth, a bowl of nachos in her hands as she ate some of them.
"Are you fucking kidding me?" Ballister swore. "Can you not see we're having a moment?"
"Yes. And I'm having nachos," Nimona replied, biting into another one. Ambrosius pressed a kiss against Ballister's temple.
"Leave her be. It's fine," Ambrosius said. Ballister smiled softly, pulling the second bowl of nachos towards him and his love.
"Yeah. It couldn't be better."

Something I don't see talked about in regards to Bal and Amb's healing/forgiveness arc:
As we all know, Ambrosius (unlike his comic counterpart) is really sorry about severing Ballister's arm. It was largely an accident, but he feels awful about it pretty much from the moment it happened (I know that in the comic he feels bad, but he doesn't say so)
However, also unlike his comic counterpart, Boldheart isn't actually angry with Ambrosius about the arm. At no point does he express resentment or hostility in regards to that specific incident, if anything, it just made him anxious of Ambrosius rather than angry (evidenced by him pulling back his hand reflexively after seeing Ambrosius at the institute)
Boldheart is angry with Ambrosius, though. Not for his arm, but for failing to hear him out, for believing the Director over him, for repeatedly and entirely misjudging his character.
And what's interesting to note is that Ambrosius is not clearly sorry for those things (at least not during the movie, it can be assumed he was sorry after)
When Ballister meets him in the Antlered Serpent, he tells Ambrosius he has 30 seconds to explain himself. When Ambrosius says this is unreasonable, Ballister says "Why? It's more than you gave me," but Ambrosius is defensive. He doesn't say he's sorry, he says "That's not fair."
He is more like his comic counterpart than people realize in that when it came to the thing Ballister was actively upset about, he became defensive, he felt he was justified, he didn't apologize. Yes, he apologized for the arm, but that didn't seem to matter to Ballister. He needed him to apologize for the emotional betrayal more than for a reflexive physical action.
I think a lot of people portray Ballister as an UwU smol bean who would forgive Ambrosius wholly and immediately because he was never upset with him in the first place, to which I reiterate, he was never upset about the arm. He was proper fucking pissed at him at the Antlered Serpent even before Ambrosius started accusing Nimona of shit. Even when Bal thought Ambrosius was actually going to finally be on his side, he was thankful and obviously still loved him, but he was wary and prickly. Then Ambrosius proceeded to, for the Nth time, not believe him again.
Similarly, a lot of people portray Ambrosius as super apologetic, utterly unproblematic, and regarding himself as being entirely in the wrong and of a "Bal can do no wrong" attitude which is really not what we see in the film.
And this, to me, makes their relationship more compelling because it shows how these two must have worked and grown to be able to trust each other again.

More headcanons of the Nimona trio being domestic dorks
Whenever the trio gets sick of each other they’ll ask the person in the trio they’re not pissed at to handle them
It always goes something like this “Ambrosius come get your kid they won’t leave me alone-“ “No Nemesis come get your husband he’s being a stick in the mud”
Or “Bal go get your son from prison he got arrested again” “Oh so he’s my son today?” “Yes when he’s stupid enough to get caught he’s your son”
If you're wondering why Nimona doesn't just escape its cause they find it hilarious when Bal has to come to bail them out at random points in the day
There are also times when they’re proud or happy and they’ll say things like “I’m gonna go get my daughter ice cream” “Since when is she just your daughter?” “Since right now when she helped me fix my prosthetic”
“Hey boss where’s my Nemesis I heard he got in a fight today” “I thought he was my Nemesis” “Not when he puts three guys in the hospital he’s not”
Bal is one of those people who sees something and says “Why would I buy that when I can just make it” AND HE DOES
Nimona has a bad habit of fucking up speakers so Bal just set up a sound system throughout the house
If the trio weren’t such antisocial losers with three friends combined their parties would be amazing
He made Ambrosius a skincare cabinet just so he could put actual medicine in the medicine cabinet
When Nimona moved in he asked them what their ideal room would look like
She gave him a rough draft and he did all of it
They spend a week tearing that room apart so they could soundproof it so she could rock out without disturbing the boys
She has sick ass LED lights and she’ll change the colors depending on her mood
Ambrosius and Bal helped her paint the walls the most obnoxious shade of neon pink And then they didn’t complain when she spray painted over said walls
It’s worth it to see her visibly relax when she enters her room
This man has gutted and put back together and rearranged their little house so many times it’s unrecognizable
I also feel like everyone in the trio is a crafty bitch
They all have a million little hobbies that have produced even more trinkets that fill up their whole house
Their house is this weird combination of comfy yet chaotic and it's a minimalists nightmare
Cleaning is also a nightmare but they wouldn't change it for anything
Back when they were in the institute Ambrosius was a terrible cook -♾️/10 his cooking would put people in the hospital
After the knighting ceremony was the first time he was living by himself and didn’t have access to free food so he taught himself how to cook
Honestly most people would think he would give up
I mean there are only so many times you set water on fire before you throw in the towel
But he's a stubborn brat and cooking took his mind off of everything so he stuck with it
One day Bal came home to the smell of cooking and he assumed it was Nimona
He swears to this day he had a heart attack when he saw Ambrosius in front of the stove and Nimona comfortably sitting at the dinner table not helping at all
He promptly dragged Nimona out of there like a bomb just went off and warned him not to touch Ambrosius’ food
He told Bal “The more you call it a biohazard the more I want to eat it”
So Bal used him like a test dummy
When Nimona finally did try it they turned to Bal and complained that he lied
Bal thought he was being pranked until he was forced by Nimona to try the food
And it was good
More than good I was fucking amazing
He asked Ambrosius quite frankly “Who are you and what have you done with my husband”
Ambrosius just rolled his eyes and told him to eat the food
Bal never gave up on finding out how and slowly but surely he started asking like a normal person
And Ambrosius never answered like a normal person
His answers would range from “A chef never reveals his secrets” (“that’s a magician love” “just zip it and eat your food”) to “I’m never telling you so suffer and finish this meal I lovingly cooked” (“is it still considered love if you knew I was gonna suffer?” “Yes” “…. Makes sense”)

you can't carry it with you if you want to survive (Nimona 2023) Chapter 2
Summary:
With their Queen deceased, no heirs, their Director terminated, three-quarters of their holy protectors retired, and their walls gone, the kingdom had called upon the scion of Gloreth to lead the way.
-
“The Director lied to you, Ambrosius. She used you and she hurt you. None of that is your fault. Why can’t you see that?”
Ballister reached out his hand, freezing when Ambrosius recoiled.
“I guess I’m just not as forgiving as you are, Bal.”
Rating: Mature Relationships: Ballister Blackheart | Ballister Boldheart/Ambrosius Goldenloin, Ambrosius Goldenloin & Nimona Chapters: 2/4 Chapter Word Count: ~6.1k Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Anxiety, Guilt, Self-Neglect, Ergomania, Post-Canon, Established Relationship
Chapter 2
Remember your training. Remember who you are.
We are born to protect this kingdom.
Thankfully, we have a descendant of Gloreth to lead us.
Refilling his glass, Ambrosius reclined in his chair as far back as the wooden frame would allow, running a hand through mussed hair. The office’s temperature had grown intolerable after only a few sips of the dark liquid, and so the top buttons of his uniform lay undone, exposing his throat and sternum. A few more sips, and he imagined he’d be tempted to roll up his sleeves and kick his feet up on the desk, boots and all.
Just considering it sent a roguish thrill coursing through him. Even in solitude, Ambrosius seldom permitted himself to sink into such a state of dishevelment. Every morning he’d stick to his routine—hair styled, face done, freshly shaven—even on rare days when he'd had no obligations but to otherwise laze about his apartment.
Ballister had teased him for this. He’d needle Ambrosius time and again, asking why bother waking up so early to groom himself when Ambrosius had confessed he hated mornings. On one occasion, he even went as far as wrestling an amused Ambrosius back into bed, pleading with him to enjoy a few more hours of sleep for a change.
At the time, Ambrosius had conceded. They’d only been dating a few months at that point, and it had taken embarrassingly little persuasion to convince a smitten Ambrosius to forgo his usual routine and curl back under the cozy covers. The next morning, however, while Ballister still slept, he rose at his usual hour to start on his hair.
It’s just what Ambrosius did. He’d never given it much thought beyond that. He’d developed the habit as early as primary school, recalling with fond warmth the mornings his mother would let him play at her vanity, mimicking her and her serene elegance. Ambrosius had been quick to fall into a morning routine of his own, smoothing out blemishes and tending to his brightened hair.
After all, even as a child, he’d understood the importance of maintaining appearances, even if—
Is something on your mind, Ambrosius?
… I’m fine, Director.
—even if, internally, he felt like his entire world was falling apart.

To say that Nimona had made it an uphill battle for Ambrosius was a tragic understatement. Ever since she'd reappeared in true chaotic fashion, the 'Golden Boy' didn't think he'd ever received more dirty looks. With Nimona incessantly pressing herself between him and her 'boss', Ambrosius was left wondering if this was how others had seen him. Back before...yeah...
Even now, weeks later, Nimona was cuddled into Ballister's side while swatting Ambrosius with her tail. It was a scarlet whip like appendage with an arrowhead tip, and Bal grasped it to keep her from smacking him again. Nimona huffed, shifting into an otter and snuggling into Ballister's lap. The brunet ran his fingers through her fur, sighing deeply.
As annoying as it was to be pushed away from his boyfriend, Ambrosius had to admit that he was grateful for Nimona's protectiveness. The way she defended Bal, even when the whole world stood against him.
'Including me.' He thought bitterly, looking away. He and Ballister had talked about the whole thing, of course. They'd spent many days after the collapse of the wall sitting in Ambrosius' apartment crying and holding each other through choked apologies. Once it got out that Bal had been living in a broken down tower, Ambrosius had spared no expense in fixing it up so they could move in together. Since everything that happened, he wanted nothing more than to get out of the city. Now they sat in the newly renovated tower living room, scrolling through Netflix to wind down for the evening.
There were times where Ambrosius wondered if he'd ever regain the kind of relationship he had with Ballister before. Did he completely mess it all up?
"Hey, can you grab the popcorn Bambi?"
Ambrosius' breath caught in his throat. He hadn't heard that nickname since they were kids! He and Nimona both whipped around to stare at Ballister. The brunet was transfixed on the TV, clearly unaware of his slip-up. A fond smile spread across Ambrosius' face, and he stood up. As he walked around the back of the couch, Ambrosius placed a gentle kiss to Ballister's temple.
"Sure thing, Thumper."
Ambrosius strolled into the kitchen, chuckling at the rapid footsteps behind him. Nimona grabbed his arm, jerking him down to her level.
"What the hell?? Bambi?! Thumper?! Wha-?!" She sputtered. Ambrosius laughed, setting up the popcorn machine.
"Heh, yeah. Kind of an inside joke." He replied. Nimona gestured impatiently. Ambrosius smiled softly.
"Well, when we were kids, Bal had a hard time... pronouncing things. He didn't have access to a lot of the education that I did, and he kinda found other ways to say things."
"So he started calling you Bambi?"
"Well, it's easier than Ambrosius, right?" Nimona shrugged.
"I guess so." Ambrosius chuckled.
"The teachers at the Institute all thought it was so cute that no one corrected him. I gotta admit... it's nice to hear it again." Nimona tilted her head as Ambrosius leaned back against the counter.
"Yeah?" He nodded.
"I...I feel sometimes like everything I did to him has ruined our relationship. Like we'll never be as close as we were. I guess hearing it kinda..." He struggled to explain.
"Reminds you that the foundation is still there." Nimona finished. Ambrosius looked up at her, surprised. She raised a brow.
"What? I wasn't born yesterday. I'm older than both of you combined." She deadpanned. Ambrosius chuckled, pouring the popcorn into bowls.
"Yeah, I guess you're right." As they returned to the couch, Nimona leaned in to whisper:
"You know I'm never letting you live this down, right 'Bambi'?" Ambrosius gave her a fake look of annoyance, face splitting into a grin as they sat down.
If Ambrosius noticed that Nimona let him sit next to Ballister on the couch, he didn't say anything. Counting it as a victory, he pulled Bal into his arms and cuddled him close.
'I've got to be the luckiest man alive.' He thought, as Ballister melted into his arms just as he did before. Nimona leaned into his side with crossed arms, not without giving him a light smack with her tail.

i thought of a yummy au you could draw:
the laser hits ballister instead of the queen and he "dies" but he doesnt die tho, Hes been in hiding for months trying to figure out who did it. imagine ambrosius's reaction to him being alive HEHEEHHEH
What a lovely day to traumatize ambrosius 👍
@puddlestheduck1 😈‼️ (i think this is puddle's au? 🤔)
Sorry this took so long 😭 under line break is added fan lore and the sketches 😈 ⬇️
Tumblr media
*laughs hysterically*
So,... *insert very sped up writing mode* The laser hit Ballister instead of the queen, HE GETS HIS DUCKING ARM BLOWN OFF (ducking is appropriate because of puddles 😔) THE CHANDELIER THINGY FALLS LIKE IN THE MOVIE, EVERYONE THINKS HE DIED,-- *inhales* or... WHEN THE LASER NEARLY HIT BAL, AMBROSIUS TRYS TO KNOCK IT OUT OF HIS HANDS BEFORE HE GETS EVEN MORE HURT AND HE ENDS UP ACCIDENTALLY CHOPPING OFF HIS ARM 😭🤧
either beginning I'm fine with- 🤠 (help i feel like i need to stop with the emojis 💀)
Then the chandelier falls and everyone thinks he died, (including ambrosius) but... just like in the movie, there was a space below where he could escape and run into the forest to the random ass tower he has in the movie 🤓
Ballister stays there for a bit trying to figure out who tried to kill him with the 'murder wall'. While Ambrosius is...uh-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nimona found the tower... (completely by chance i swear)
Not expecting to find Ballister trying to figure out who "murdered" him-
they become friends and stuff like in the movie 😦 (I'm lazy)
Maybe Nimona thinks he's a villain due to...well...the 'evil lair' and his *cough* emo clothes-- *cough* (thats just an idea tho :>)
Tumblr media
Nimona: NO! You are not going to risk your life just to tell your boyfriend you're okay! Heck, for all we know, he could have been the one that tried to kill you!
Context: Ballister wanting to make sure Ambrosius is alright, and Nimona not wanting to risk Ballister actually getting killed this time (sorry I'm kinda rushing this i have to go somewhere soon 😭)
Tumblr media
Random unrelated Ambrosius headcanon 👺 (atleast for this au- 😔)
ANNNNDDDDDDDDD back to the golden knight...and the bald bitch:
Tumblr media
The Director: *wondering why the direct Descendant of Gloreth is in his room having a mental breakdown*
Also The Director: *'murdered' the love of his life*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AMBROSIUS: 🤠
Tumblr media
Ambrosius' POV (sorry for the pov thing 😅): i miss him so much...it's like i can still hear him...
...
Wait--
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ah yes the lore here is made out of lore (TYSM to the person that asked this, i enjoyed making it 🐀)
Tumblr media
Happy ending :D (...or is it...they still haven't found out that the director tried to kill bal-- 😈)
Tumblr media

hi yeah so to this day i’m still thinking about the direct aftermath of the betrayal. about how we still don’t know exactly what happened - maybe the movie will give us some backstory! obviously we know the long-term effects of it, but what happened directly after the button was pushed? like did ambrosius realize what he’d done at first? was there instant horror and regret the moment it happened? or did it take a moment to register that he’d blown off ballister’s arm?
and how long did it take ambrosius to realize that the worst mistake of his life had been by design, planned all along? how long before he realized it was never really his fault, but rather the director’s? was it right after he’d stood up in the arena only to find that ballister was still on the ground, or was it a slow reconciliation with the truth that stretched across years?
and about the feud/breakup itself, too - how much of it was pushed by the director and the news, and how much was it ballister himself, rightly angry that he’d been betrayed? how many times did ambrosius try to tell ballister it was an accident before it became clear ballister didn’t believe him, and how many times after that was he just repeating himself over and over? did he ever mention that he’d tried to help, that he’d seen the spreading pool of blood and tried to rush over, only to be held back? did anybody ever find out that beneath the triumphant, untouchable king’s champion was a scared and bitter young knight, forever regretting something that was out of his control from the very beginning? that the price of his victory was so, so much higher than a broken lance and an arm?
what would it feel like, i wonder, to be a golden boy on a pedestal, exalted as a hero but despised by the person who mattered most to you? to be rewarded with fame and glory and a statue in the town square for something you never even meant to do, something that ruined everything? to be celebrated for the worst thing you ever did, crowned king’s champion and gilded in the eyes of the whole kingdom but knowing their approval means nothing compared to the love of the person you’d hurt, someone you’ll probably never get back again because why would you after what you’d done? to get everything you’d ever thought you wanted, at the expense of the one person who mattered most?

Beyond the Wall au
Before the events of the story:
Same thing happened, queen gets killed and ballister gets framed for it.
Ballister eventually finds out that the director was the one who framed him and he spent months trying to prove his innocence but fails each time.
With no other choice he leaves the kingdom and travelled beyond the wall(hehe) where he eventually stumbled upon a village.
Surprised by the fact that a village exists outside the wall, he believed that there was no monster at all and lived in that village.
People were welcoming, very welcoming, maybe a little too welcoming. But Ballister won't mind, because he never felt accepted or welcomed in his whole life(other than ambrosius and the queen of course)
Ballister was having a great time with the people in the village, he doesn't have to hide and he does have the pressure of people watching and expecting a mistake being done by him. Everything was great for him.
And then the day came when everything went down for him.
He noticed the people in the village are either sad, anxious, or more serious than they usually are. The change of atmosphere disturbed him so he decided to confront the village chief about the happenings.
"oh don't worry about that my friend. it's just that- it's someone's last day today."
"o-oh, did someone die today?"
"oh no no no, they are still alive. It's just that people are aware it's their last day."
"so that explains the different atmosphere"
With that, Ballister turned to leave. Only to turn around and get knocked out before he can reach the door.
Ballister eventually woke up and found himself being tied. Panic and confusion rushing into him as he sees the villagers and the chief watching him and another person being tied up not too far from him.
They were screaming. Ranging from accusations, to apologies, and eventually begs.
It was here that the chief revealed everything.
He told Ballister that the kingdom was right and that there is a monster. The reason why their village survived was because they found a way to keep the monster from attacking and that is to sacrifice. Since they are the only ones there, they have no other choice but to sacrifice each other or depending on who the village vote. They don't tell the sacrifice that they were voted, they would just go to their house, knock them out and sacrifice. That was the village's tradition.
Then Ballister came. They had planned to sacrifice him the moment he arrived.
Ballister have been betrayed again, he wanted to say something to them when he suddenly hears a chilling sound.
The monster had arrived. And everyone, except for the chief, left to hide. The chief stayed to make sure that the monster eats both of their sacrifices.
Unfortunately for the chief, Ballister managed to escape from his bounds and escape.
Ballister ran and hid in a house that was close by and strangely empty. He shut he door and hid in the corner of the room, unfortunately for him that only dark corner was close to the window.
When the monster arrived, Ballister covered his mouth. Trying to silence his cries as he sees the monster peering through the window and placing its hand on the glass. Fortunately, it didn't see him, and it went away. (The scene i drew before)
With him being alone in the shop, he thought about the events that had just transpired. Seeing the people whom he trusted and believed were kind turn away from him hurts, but something else was brewing inside. It was small but it was there, it was anger. He felt anger towards them, towards the people he trusted, towards the people he believed in, and pretty soon that small anger turned to hatred.
He was so consumed in his anger that he didn't realize the things that happened. The chief finding him, trying to kill him for the sacrifice, and him fighting back. He came back to his senses when he realized what he had done.
His first real murder.
He had expected to regret what he had done, but instead he felt great. He stood there looking at the body, feeling satisfied of the demise that he had brought on the chief.
He was snapped out of his thoughts when he hears the monster again. Instead of panicking, he simply looks at the body before dragging it out to meet the monster to feed it.
Time skip (I'm getting impatient), Ballister imprisoned everyone in the village and use them as food for the monster who he had now named Nimona.
Because of what Ballister does for Nimona, it sees him as an ally or a parent of some sort, which Ballister was happy about. They gave him a mark to show that he is under their protection. It's a bite mark that's located just below his nape.
Ballister also taught her to call him dad, because nimona can't really talk so Ballister teaches her.
Since the numbers of his prisoners are slowly going down, Ballister had no other choice but to hunt for Nimona's food.
Where would he find food? The kingdom of course. He goes in through the same hole that he escaped through and kidnaps people.
His crimes didn't go unnoticed by the institute or by the people, and so the investigation of hunting down the killer, which the people believed to be the monster, begun.
It didn't take too long to find where the killer usually goes and where he usually stalks and it's all thanks to the kingdom's security cameras.
Upon finding out where the killer goes, Ambrosius planned to ambush the killer in the place where he enters, Todd on the other hand wanted to do something on his own and planned to go after the killer instead. Ambrosius warned him about it but Todd being Todd ignored it.
Todd gathered his own group of knights and went out of the kingdom with out letting Ambrosius know at all. He eventually finds out and gets pissed, so Ambrosius followed after Todd to get him back. He only took about 3 knights with him since it was just a fetching mission.
An Hour after Ambrosius wet beyond the wall to search for Todd, his(Todd) party literally went back to the kingdom since they didn't found anything.
Little did they know both parties went to different directions. While Todd's party went to search in the east, Ambrosius' party went north west which was the direction of the village which Ballister lived in.
Little time skip, Ambrosius's group ran into Nimona and died except for Ambrosius, who was badly injured and cornered by Nimona.
But before Nimona could eat Ambrosius, a familiar voice called out to her causing Nimona to pause and turn towards the direction where the voice came. Meanwhile, Ambrosius was surprised since he recognized the voice.
The second time Nimona was called, she dropped Ambrosius and rushed towards the person who was calling her. Ambrosius took the chance and turned to run when the same voice called out his name, and he turned.
There he sees Ballister, standing a few feet away from Ambrosius with a face that stared back at him in shock before turning into a gentle smile. The angle that Ambrosius was made the moon shine upon Ballister, the sight would have made Ambrosius melt if it wasn't for the monster standing behind him.
Ambrosius sense the change in Ballister, and confirming that change only made it worse for him. Ballister approached him in the same way he had always done before everything.
Ballister still loves and truly missed Ambrosius, so he asked Ambrosius to stay with him outside the wall. Ambrosius refused because 1) the monster is real and he wats go back to the kingdom so he can be safe, and 2) he's expected to return and protect the kingdom as gloreth's descendant
Ballister resorts to manipulating Ambrosius and convincing him to stay with him outside of the kingdom's castle.
How did Ballister manipulate him? Well he told Ambrosius how he felt when Ambrosius cut his arm off, how he felt when Ambrosius chose to capture him instead of helping him, making him feel so alone, almost being sacrificed, and that his whole life has been miserable ever since his arm was cut off.
Ambrosius, now being consumed with guilt, gives in and stayed, and he gained a mark from Nimona. (it looked much scarier in my head might animate soon). The post is getting too long, I'll be making a part two instead.

Another bit of thought and another AU/What if:
• So basically the squire manages to get Ballister aside while the knights went out and show him the video of the Director replacing his sword. He’s kinda scared Ballister wouldn’t believe him because of the power and respect the Director has
• Ambrosius also finds out because he sees Ballister not there and he’s like,”babe, c’mon. We gotta go” and sees the video too
• The two confront the Director during the knighting and ask her what’s the deal with replacing Ballister’s sword
• Then the sword starts to go off in the prescene of the Queen and Ballister manages to make it point up and avoid hitting her but it blasts the Jumbotron and it falls down
• Ballister pulls the Queen away but hurts his arm really bad in the process (debating on it being so bad, it needed to be amputated or not)
• So the Director is arrested for attempting to kill the Queen and blame it Ballister. This hurts everyone, especially Ballister due to the fact the Director never wanted him to be a knight and was going to make it look like he killed his mother figure
• Ambrosius is also incredibly pissed on his man’s behalf and if it weren’t for Ballister, he would’ve thrown hands with the Director for her crimes
• So everyone’s trying to collect themselves after the ordeal, especially Ballister. He’s happy he’s a knight, but the what ifs, the Director’s real thought on him, and the idea of what would happen if the Director got her way really is messing with him. Ambrosius does his best to comforts him and make him feel better. Admittedly, the whole thing has Ambrosius more protective of Ballister cuz, ya know
• Some time later, the queen decided to explore the outside of the wall to see what’s the real danger and to expand and she entrusted Ballister to lead the first mission
• He got stuck with Todd, who decided it be funny to just leave him by the end and lie to the others that he’s behind. This leaves Ballister alone to find a way back himself
• He traces back his steps to get back and while doing so, he runs into Nimona and sees her shapeshifting first hand
• He immediately gets scared and draws his sword and she in response turns into a wolf/bear to protect herself
• Seeing that he scared her, he lets down his sword and takes a calmer stance, apologizing and assuring her he won’t harm her
• She relaxes and shifts into her girl form…and immediately takes interest his Ballister’s arm
• Nimona: Woah! Sick arm, dude!
Ballister: I…Thank you?
• Bal’s just confused about this shapeshifting girl who’s just happily talking to him and who’s all by herself
• He questions her about who she is and where she comes from, but she only states her name and doesn’t give much to get from
• She does help Ballister get back to the kingdom…where Ambrosius is arguing with Todd over abandoning Ballister and would’ve punched him hard in the face if it weren’t for Ballister coming in and stopping him, which relieves Goldenloin as his man was okay after all
• Ballister was going to introduce Nimona, but she took off after he went to stop Ambrosius. So he’s just pondering about her after it and thinking about the shapeshifter girl who helped him out
• After that, he found her chilling in the tower and started visiting her often, bringing food and trying to get to know her better, which is shocking to Nimona, who comes around to enjoying Ballister’s company and feels happy to have someone who really won’t abandon her because of who she is this time
Something else that can be expanded but I thought this was a cute slice of life idea!
TL:DR: Queen never died, Bal never got framed, and he met Nimona near the outside of the wall

Watched Nimona last night and a thought occurred to me.
The knights’ armor doesn’t seem to be very protective against their swords. Bal’s arm is easily severed and we are led to believe that a stab through the stomach would not only be possible but would kill Ambrosius.
And yet. Characters wearing the armor survive a LOT. Ballister is beaten to hell and back by several incidents, random guards are tossed around without raising worries about their health (which Bal definitely would do if they were in real danger), and Todd survives his serious crash in the finale with major but recoverable injuries. It seems to be effective. It seems that it is protective, that it can shrug off damage that would be more dangerous to an unarmored person. But it’s utterly useless against their own swords.
The kingdom’s police force is wearing equipment that is clearly not meant for combat with an equal but protects against any weaponry a common citizen could wield. The knights are designed for oppression right down to their gear.

ok i see everyone's "ballister and ambrosius as nimona's parents" stuff but i'm going to raise you this
Ballister and Dr. Blitzmeyer as nimona's parents
I know there's the Gay Dad au sanctifying ambrosis as nimona's dad but he seems to get frustrated with Nimona more frequently than Ballister and I kinda got the sense that adopting her was mostly Bal's choice. Don't get me wrong, ambrosius has moments where he enjoys himself and he loves her, but I don't think he's thrilled abt the idea of her being here forever. He gives "good at babysitting but needs to give the child back at a certain point" vibes and obviously he can't do that when it's his kid
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However in the Everything Is Fine au (the one where they all live in the cabin in the woods) Blitzmeyer is Nimona's guardian and they move from the city to the woods together, eventually moving in w Bal and Ambrosius.
Tumblr media
Besides this au I don't think Blitzmeyer and Nimona ever interact, but I thought it was very interesting how the one time they do, she's also Nimona's guardian (I believe that's the word ND Stevenson uses, not "parent.") Already in this one picture, they look happier than Ambrosius did lol
I'm sure movie ambrosius would be much more willing to try and get to know nimona but what if the sticking point is with her this time? She can't get over what he did to both her and Bal, he reminds her too much of Gloreth, she's still wary of anyone that was that ingrained in the institute, and a million other things. She knows he's really trying and feels bad about everything but bc of all she's been through, she's not quick to trust people who betrayed her. Especially if she's only had bad interactions with them until this point. She avoids/shuts down his attempts to connect with her and is generally closed off and angry when he's there. It's like a kid hating their new stepparent lol Both Bal and Ambrosius know it's nothing personal, just the defense mechanism that's kept her safe from people like ambrosius for so long, but it still hurts. Eventually, he gives up trying to reach out to her and figures maybe she'll come to him or maybe they just won't be as close as he hoped.
Now, Bal's weird science friend is someone more Nimona's speed lol Blitzmeyer has somehow remained almost completely immune to institute propaganda, doesn't really care abt breaking things (the law included) if it can further her work in some way, and is just kooky enough to appeal to Nimona. She lets nimona help in the lab and doesn't mind the million questions she asks because that's just another opportunity to talk abt her work. They go on some adventures getting stuff for Blitzmeyer's experiments and really bond. Eventually they become pretty close and Nimona frequently goes out of her way to see Blitzmeyer.
One night late in the lab, Bal mentions that Nimona really likes her and Dr Blitzmeyer is like "really? no, not that much." And Bal's like "no, really that much. About as much as she likes me actually." And then with creeping awareness they both slowly look at each other with the realization that they're co-parenting now and actually have been for a while. After the initial freak out, they keep going almost like normal but throw in an outing every other month or so. They'll take Nimona for ice cream or some other casual thing and she's none the wiser that they've figured her out. One night as they were coming home from a movie or smth Nimona says, "I'm so glad we did this, I love spending time with my two favorite people." Nimona keeps walking but they have to stop to silently freak out to each other a bit lol
The only problem is that they frequently get mistaken for a nuclear family on these outings. And it doesn't help that Bal and Blitzmeyer often refer to each other as "my partner." (They open a lab together at the end of the comic and I think they would as well after the movie, so they are literally business partners and lab partners. But I like to hc them in a queer platonic relationship as well, so the word "partner" has a double meaning here. Ambrosius is Bal's romantic partner and Blitzmeyer is his platonic partner. They all talked abt it, it's all good.) Every time this happens though, Bal has to explain that they're just friends and he actually has a husband back at home. Some people go "ok, 'just friends,' sure. wink wink nudge nudge ;)" or "ok... does your husband know...? That you... and her...? ok, ok." It makes Bal angry when this happens but neither him or Blitzmeyer cares enough to actually do anything about it. Nimona just laughs at the stranger's confusion at their unconventional family.
Anyway, they're just two friends who somehow found themselves raising a 1000 year old shapeshifter together lol Ambrosius is disappointed Nimona didn't like him as much as he hoped but now he can just stay home and vibe lol

More Nimona headcanons because these dorks have taken over my brain
I feel like Nimona tried really hard to hate Ambrosius
The first month they knew each other Nimona tried so hard to antagonize him and poke fun at him and remind him of the shit he’s done wrong
But it’s kind of hard to hate someone who’s slow to anger and quick to forgive
Reminding someone of their past mistakes with the intent to hurt them kind of stops being fun when the person is constantly aware of their mistakes
And owns up to them without making excuses and is constantly trying to undo the damage their mistakes caused
After a while, he grows on her and she starts to trust him and in return he trusts her
This one is based heavily on me and my best friends
Nimona and Ambrosius will talk shit loudly in public
They won’t use code names and if they don’t know the person they’ll start describing them like “Did you see that dude in the yellow shirt? He just pushed that kid out of line what a dick!”
They won't check to see if the person is out of earshot either they simply don't give a fuck
And this gives Bal so much fucking anxiety enough that he starts pleading with them to stop
You hear them going off about something and Bal saying “Ambrosius love hun sunshine I’m begging you to keep your voice down”
“Nim Nimona starlight hi I would like to remind you that they’re still behind us and I don’t want to explain to Ambrosius why you’ve gotten into another fight this week so please stop”
To which Nimona responds with “Tell him he’ll probably laugh”
Whenever Nimona and Ambrosius want to rant they rant to each other
Because Bal is the type of person to give advice in the middle of a rant
Talking some “If you explain this to them in a calm and compassionate manner I’m sure they’ll stop”
And while that's excellent advice sometimes you just want to scream your most unhinged thoughts at someone
And they never judge each other either
Nimona can look Ambrosius dead in the eyes and go “Have you ever gotten so angry during an argument that you’ve considered lighting their car on fire?”
And Ambrosius won't even think about it he’ll respond immediately with a “Who hasn't?” while Bal slowly backs out of the room and silently vows to hide his car the next time they fight
Whenever Ambrosius comes home from a stressful day at work he just walks into the house and lets out the most dramatic drawn out sigh
And whenever Nimona hears that noise they’ll run to the living room and sit on the couch patiently waiting for their daily rant session
Whenever Nimona gets home and wants to rant he’ll walk around until he finds Ambrosius
And if he can't find him he’ll sit by Bal and stew in his anger while he waits for him to come home
He can't even take one step through the door without Nimona saying something like “How dare you make me wait”
And Ambrosius will always respond with something like “Oh I’m so sorry firecracker it’ll never happen again”
And encourage them to tell him the information they’ve been patiently waiting to spill
Bal doesn’t rant unless he’s literally at the end of his rope
Like you have to royally screw him over for him to go home and rant to his family
When he finally rants to them they don’t make a big deal out of it
But they do however try their best to take care of him without raising his suspicions
Nimona will conveniently make Bal’s favorite dinner
Ambrosius will just so happen to pick up his favorite dessert on his way home (cause they both know the signs of a Bal rant and they plan accordingly)
They listen to his rant and let him eat his favorite food in peace while they play his favorite movies
You know real wholesome shit
All the while they’re coming up with plans in their head to destroy this person's life

Nimona headcanons part 3 bc I'm insane (out of order and disorganized so like- be ready) and bc it's my new year gift for y'all
• Nimona mostly talks like a normal teen but sometimes she'd use words that show her real age. "Sonorous", "vapidity" n stuff like that. Her vocabulary is INSANELY huge
• Ambrosius tries not to swear so he uses a lot of silly replacements instead. "HOLY S- golly!!", "You son of a b- bishop". Like I'm sorry but he's the type of guy to say fricking instead of, yknow, the intended word. Ballister finds it endearing; Nimona finds it stupid
• Yes yes he does replace sex with lovemaking. Yes he purely refers to him and Bal going at it as "making love". Yes he's a fellow like that
• Ballister doesn't drink alcohol. I know that's implied in the movie that he drinks (although I thought he drank, like, soda?? On the other hand he is a wholeass thirty years old man who's seen some shit so I wouldn't be surprised) but idk he strikes me as a type to refuse drinking out of moral code. He doesn't eat pork for the same reasons (pushing my cultural Muslim Ballister agenda)
• Ambrosius drinks only during celebrations or parties. Not much because he's a light drinker😭 one cup and he's already lying on the floor, crying and hyperanalyzing his life
• after Nimona came back Ambrosius was not safe from her jokes. Neither of them despised each other (not after Nimona saved the whole Kingdom and not after Ambrosius proved he really isn't a jerk) but boy does Nimona make fun of him on any given occasion. Ambrosius was taken aback by this at first but then he just got used to it
• Ambrosius is being kinda petty and jealous when Ballister spends more time with Nimona than him ("Although now apparently he's got a new best friend, what's that about?!"), not in a way that'd make it unhealthy ofc but still😭. Him and Ballister were tied to the hip for like the most of their lives and now there's someone ELSE Ballister likes to hang out with? Ugh🙄
• Ambrosius had a diary when he was a teen, he didn't write much there (one or two sentences a day). Once he became an adult he kind of forgot about it but after the whole... Hunting stuff started happening he found himself writing a ton of sentences there again
• when him and Bal started dating Ambrosius had a whole page in that diary filled with "Ambrosius Boldheart" HE'S A GUY LIKE THAT OKAY
• Ambrosius likes to attack Ballister's face with quick little kisses. If he pecked his forehead he must peck his cheeks and nose and eyelids and cheekbones etc etc
• Nimona sometimes speaks in rhymes. She doesn't know how she's doing it but her tongue just does it on its own. ("Let's go dunk on the punk in the trunk")
• Ballister has actually been a year older than everyone in his class, another reason why he was the black sheep™
• Ambrosius can play the flute and the piano due to his noble upbringing he HATES whenever someone brings it up tho
• Nimona and Ballister have those nights where they recall historical facts and situations and Nimona shows her perspective of the things. "The guy claimed to be a war criminal was the biggest sweetheart in the world what are you onnn". Ballister wrecks his brain trying to understand if she's serious or not
• Ballister doesn't get a lot of the jokes, they just fly over his head. Only after some time he starts getting them, like in the middle of the night randomly going "ohhhh that's what she meant"
• first time Ambrosius and Ballister made out Ambrosius threw his hands in the air and said "yayy :D"
• Ballister's haircare routine is better than you think it is he's just casual about it. Yes he uses coconut oil like his life depends on it
• Ambrosius's complexion is leaner but Bal's is broader. So when they exchange clothes it doesn't fit because Bal's shirts are too loose on Ambrosius but also kinda short and Ambrosius's are kinda long but too tight in the shoulders for Bal. They still think it's sweet to swap their clothes sometimes
