Dreary weekend in NC-WV, but once I got over my hangover from the WVU-Texas Tech game this morning, I managed to sneak in a quick fall hike on the Virgin Hemlock Trail in Coopers Rock State Forest. The asters are out in force and quite beautiful this fall. Among them are (from top): purplestem aster (Symphyotrichum puniceum); frost aster (Symphyotrichum pilosum), also known as awl aster; calico aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum); and blue wood aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium).

okay so, last night i had a dream that the awl remake was actually a crossover with tos2. most stuff was just regular awl stuff with the people just wearing tos2 outfits and all, but i /think/ everyone was in luin instead?? and all of a sudden, richter just showed up and boy was he confused! i know he did say and do something but i can't remember it anymore unfortunately, and for some reason a skit with aster showed up and he had kongwai's hair but in light brown?? (1/2)

he was saying something about emil. i was left feeling slightly confused when i woke up but it felt like a good dream nonetheless, and you being a true tos2-connoisseur i felt like sharing this with you. maybe i will find out more if i get to dream about this again (2/2)

Frost Aster, Pilose Aster, Awl Aster, Old Field Aster

all appropriate names, based on the dense pilose hair surfaces, the common locations of the super ruderal species, the awl shapes of the apical cauline leaves and the matching involucre bracts, and the colors of the hairs along with the ligule colors.

Autumn sunsets and dying light put emphasis on the light white flowers of old field aster. Symphyotrichum pilosum, which is a species that literally puts me in awl. *bad joke* awl and awe were to similar to pass this joke up since this species is also called the awl aster, for it’s sharp reflexed involucreral bracts, aka phyllary scales that hook and terminate in an awl like point.

It’s other common names are hairy frost aster (because of its hairy stems and ruderal clumping habit making dense colonies in bloom look like frost in fall.

Hopefully at some point I’ll get lucky enough to see the fabled cedar barren and alvar lurking variety called “Pringle’s frost aster” S. pilosum var. pringlei known for its reduced leaves and requirement of low light competition.
