So I was listening to a sea shanty medley by a band called Home Free, and they did a version of Away Santiana that had a killer beat to it and I was like… fuck I need to Bionicle-ify this:
So have “Hey Santiana” lyrics except it’s about the Inika and probably sung by the Voyatoran:
Oh six Toa hit shore one day
Fight on, dear Inika!
Lightning’s coronation lit up the bay
After the ancient Mask they go
They lift their swords and the six stars glow
Fight on, dear Inika!
Less than a day ‘fore they face their foe
After the ancient Mask they go
Chronicler, village leader, and captain true!
Fight on, dear Inika!
Gukko pilot, inventor, and sportsman too
After the ancient Mask they go
Well, line your shot, let the Zamor go
Fight on, dear Inika!
Fire the Zamor and save our souls
After the ancient Mask they go
At their weapons the Nektann fell
Fight on, dear Inika!
What was this to six who had walked through hell?
After the ancient Mask they go
So! go and let the Piraka know
Fight on, dear Inika!
It’s time to pay back their every blow
After the ancient Mask they go
Fire, ice, and water, lock and load
Air, earth, and stone, bring our kin home
After the Mask of Life you go!

and being rlly fucking confused bc you know damn well those are NOT the lyrics
but it's bc you meant to look for Santiana

can u recommend a sea shantie? i need more sea shanties for the soul
Leave Her Johnny. But specifically the one from Assassin's Creed 4, because the melancholy voices of the choir is just incredible.
Additionally, Hoist Up The Thing by the Longest Johns. This song came out a week before the Akuna docked in Darwin the final time and I disembarked, so I didn't get to hear it while I aboard ship, but the "not knowing how to do anything" joke was exactly me when I was still aboard her, and listening to the song gives me a strong nostalgia for my time at sea when I didn't know how to do anything and had to be taught by the older fellas around me.
Fire and Flame is about the Halifax Disaster, again by the Longest Johns.
Have you noticed a trend of me enjoying this band?
We sang a long of songs on the Akuna, but maybe a quarter I don't know the name of because they were assorted blackfella songs that weren't in English (maybe half the crew was black, including the captain) and I didn't know their lyrics and had to sing by sound.
The Akuna is also where I first heard And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, which the crew sang for me after they'd learnt I was a drover before I was a linesman. Ernie, her captain, was a Vietnam vet and was a bit emotional when the crew sang it. I learnt this song VERY quickly and would lead the singing of it after.
Speaking of singing, I was asked to sing a lot, since my singing voice is soprano, so I sound like a girl when I sing. And these men have been at sea most of their lives, and we didn't get radio out there, so they liked listening to me sing.
Other songs we sang were Santiana, Off to Sea, Wellerman, Old Maui, Shores of Botany Bay, Bound For South Australia, I Was Only 19, The Wild Colonial Boy, Along the Road to Gundagai, Took the Children Away (some of the blokes aboard were part of the Stolen Generations), Home Among the Gumtrees, Fields of Athenry (which I was encouraged to sing), and Moreton Bay. We went heavy on the bush ballads.
When I sang, it was usually Fields of Athenry, Danny Boy, a LOT of song by Celtic Woman but most were songs from Endless Ocean (the Wii game) because I knew those best, Green Fields of France, etc. I sang a lot of war songs by request, a lot of blackfella songs if I knew the lyrics, a lot of Irish ballads, and a couple of English ones (Scarborough Faire was popular).
My only regret was that I disembarked when I did and didn't spend more time aboard.

heave her up and away we go, away, santiana! heave her up and away we go along the plains of mexico.
This piece was another exercise in playing with looping and multiple readings, which is something that Sherman’s lends itself to well due to its circular nature. Here, the central sentence is a repeated element, and the flanking phrases create the two couplets of the verse. Theoretically, you ought to be able to read the two couplets in any order, but I also wanted to play with using catch marks + numbers to denote reading order.
Recently I’ve been particularly interested in finding a way to translate song lyrics creatively, in a manner that captures the musical, multidimensional nature of the song itself... So I’ll probably keep experimenting with these ideas in smaller bites before synthesizing them into a larger piece.
In the meantime, let me know if you’ve got any requests! I’d love to add some ideas to my inspiration folder for future projects.

full speed ahead (listen/download)
an argo ii playlist - the heroes of olympus - arranged by ducksbellorum
full speed ahead - epic the musical Every great quest aboard a magitechnical Greek warship deserves an equally great playlist, or at least that's what Leo tells everyone when he asks for their song choices. Six hundred men, six hundred miles of open sea But the problem's not the distance It's what lies in between
this is sparta !!! - sammy & lesen Obviously this was one of Leo's contributions; the bass gets him hype and the fact that he's bumping Spartan jams on a Greek warship just tickles him. Spartans, What is your profession? Spartans, Prepare for glory!
vode an - samuel kim Jason added this to the playlist; he doesn't know a lot of 'modern' music, but this track reminds him of Roman war chants and gets him going. Kandosii sa ka'rta, Vode an. Coruscanta a'den mhi, Vode an. Bal kote, darasuum kote, Jorso'ran kando a tome.
seven nation army - the white stripes Percy Jackson was tempted to add a joke track, but knowing Leo there would be plenty and besides, why not add something he actually wants to listen to? Everyone knows about it From the Queen of England to the Hounds of Hell And if I catch it comin' back my way, I'm gonna serve it to you And that ain't what you want to hear, but that's what I'll do
yereyira - papito & iba one Piper spent a lot of her life around spoiled pop musicians and their kids, so her music tastes tend toward the most obscure artists possible on purpose. Pa-pa-pa-pa-papito I-i-i-i-iba one Papito, Iba One Iba One, Papito!
shake it off - taylor swift There is in fact a Swiftie aboard the Argo II and it's Frank Zhang; he's a little bashful about it but that doesn't stop him from adding it to the playlist. I'm dancin' on my own I make the moves up as I go And that's what they don't know, That's what they don't know
over the rainbow - judy garland Like Jason, Hazel also doesn't know much modern music, but that doesn't hold her back from getting Leo to add one of her favorites to the crew's mix. Somewhere over the rainbow Skies are blue And the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come true
laughter lines - bastille This is Annabeth's pull; most of her music is lyricless for better concentration, but occasionally she veers into bittersweet indie pop, like this. "I'll see you in the future when we're older And we are full of stories to be told Cross my heart and hope to die I'll see you with your laughter lines"
sea shanty medley - home free If you don't think that the crew did some shanty singing on their journey, you're probably right but that won't stop me from hoping they did. She's a fast clipper ship and a bully good crew Away Santiana And an old salty yank for a captain too Along the plains of Mexico
bonus: spooky scary skeletons (remix) - andrew gold "Hey Nico, you want to add a song to the quest playlist?" "No." "Are you suuuuure?" "Yes." "I'll just add one for you, then, shall I?" "VALDEZ!" We're so sorry skeletons, you're so misunderstood You only want to socialize (But I don't think we should)

Movie Review: Cornish Sea Singers Return -- "Fisherman's Friends: One and All"
Movie Review: Cornish Sea Singers Return — “Fisherman’s Friends: One and All”
The sound of a men’s chorus harmonizing through “Sloop John B.,” “Sail Away Ladies,” “Santiana” or “Haul Away Joe” still brings a tingle to the spine when those Cornish Fisherman’s Friends bring sea chanteys back to life in “Fisherman’s Friends: One and All.” That’s a good thing, because this sequel to the unlikely indie hit about that unlikeliest of British pop chart toppers lacks the charm,…

So uh. I made Corndrop. People were asking for him cause of the memes I made, so I made him.
Tumblr media
But also since @madame-mongoose infected me with "give OCs angst" disease, here's some angsty backstory for him!
_____
Oh Santiana gained the day
Away Santiana
Now pull the yan up the west they say
Along the plains of Mexico
Well heave her up and away we'll go
Away Santiana
Heave her up and away we'll go
Along the plains of Mexico
“Well hello there lad! First time seeing ya around these parts!”
Corndrop looked up from his cart to see a large fox animatronic staring at him. They were pretty much equal in height, maybe Corndrop having a few inches because of his hat. The fox was definitely broader though, and the pirate costume made him just a tad bit intimidating.
“Oh, uh, hi there! My name is Corndrop, and my job is to sell corn-related food,” Corndrop introduced, motioning to his cart that he referred to as the Corn Cart.
“Nice to meet ya laddy! My name be Foxy the Pirate, and I run Kid’s Cove!” Foxy waved his hook around to motion to all of Kid’s Cove. “Are ye a new animatronic?”
Corndrop nodded the best that he could. “Yup! Today’s my first day, actually. I’m hoping I can sell a good amount of my product, so the higher-ups will be happy.”
“Ay, I know you can do it, lad!” Foxy patted Corndrop on the shoulder with his hand. “Tell ya what, I’ll even do some advertising for ya. Us bots gotta stick together, ya know?” Foxy winked.
“Really? Thank you, Mr. Foxy!” Corndrop was almost vibrating in excitement. Haven’t even been up and running for a day, and he already made a friend!
“Heh, just call me Foxy!”
She's a fast clipper ship and a bully good crew
Away Santiana
And an old salty Yank for a captain too
Along the plains of Mexico
Well heave her up and away we'll go
Away Santiana
Heave her up and away we'll go
Along the plains of Mexico
“Ol’ Corn buddy! How much booty did ya bring in today?”
Corndrop looked high up to see Foxy leaning over the railing of the lighthouse. It was after hours and since he had nothing better to do, he had made his way back to Kid’s Cove where is favorite pirate resided.
“Not as much as I would have liked, unfortunately. People just weren’t in the mood for corn today!” Corndrop shouted back at Foxy. The pirate raised his hand in a wait manner before disappearing into the lighthouse.
Foxy reappeared a few seconds later coming out of the door of the lighthouse. “Not in the mood for corn, ya say? How could anyone not be in the mood for corn!”
Corndrop shrugged. “It’s like that sometimes, but I did make a lot of money yesterday, so I’m not too worried.”
“Hm…” Foxy tapped his chin with his hook. “Maybe ya just need something to draw in a crowd. Ye have a good voice, have ya tried singing?”
Corndrop chuckled. “While my voice is nice, I don’t think I’m programmed with the same talent for singing as Freddy.” And Corndrop could say that, as he sold a lot of products at the shows the main 4 glamrocks put on.
“Nonsense! Ya just need the right tune!” Foxy stepped closer and wrapped an arm around Corndrop’s shoulders. “Have ya tried a sea shanty?”
Corndrop tilted his head. “Sea shanty? Never heard of it.”
Foxy let out a mock gasp and pulled Corndrop closer. “Seems like I gotta teach ya some then!”
Santiana fought for gold
Away Santiana
Around Cape Horn through the ice and snow
Along the plains of Mexico
Well heave her up and away we'll go
Away Santiana
Heave her up and away we'll go
Along the plains of Mexico
Corndrop watched with a grin as Foxy played with the children. Foxy was such a kind bot, even if he was programmed to be. Corndrop didn’t know what he would have become if it wasn’t for Foxy greeting him that first day.
Though Corndrop never did try out Foxy’s idea to sing to draw people in, the pirate still taught him every sea shanty he knew, and it just became their thing. Almost every day after closing, Corndrop would meet Foxy at the cove and together, they would sing and laugh, getting closer every day.
If only it could stay like this forever.
'Twas on the field of Molly-Del-Rey
Away Santiana
Well both his legs got blown away
Along the plains of Mexico
Well heave her up and away we'll go
Away Santiana
Heave her up and away we'll go
Along the plains of Mexico
“They’re having me go on adventures to other plexes, starting next week.”
Corndrop froze. He and Foxy had just been laughing after he had messed up a verse in Wellerman. Where was this coming from?
“What?”
Foxy turned his head to look at Corndrop. “It’s not permanent! Just for a few months. They want me to travel, telling tall tales to the wee lads and lasses. Take them on all sorts of adventures,” he explained.
Corndrop took a few moments to process this. “A few months?”
Foxy nodded and looked away. “Give er take. I’ll be back by the new year from what I heard.”
Corndrop hesitated for only a second before reaching out to grab Foxy’s hand. “Okay. I’ll be waiting to hear some cool new stories.”
Foxy’s face grinned as much as it could. “I’m looking forward to telling you them!”
It was a fierce and bitter strife
Away Santiana
The general Taylor took his life
Along the plains of Mexico
But he never came back.
Well heave her up and away we'll go
Away Santiana
Heave her up and away we'll go
Along the plains of Mexico
“Santiana now we mourn. Away Santiana… We left him buried off Cape Horn,” Corndrop paused and drew in a simulated breath before continuing. “Along the plains of Mexico…”
The echoing of the empty Kid’s Cove was his only response.
