In the days leading up to the Oct. 20 release of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, The Lyric cinema in Fort Collins, Colorado, fielded some unusual calls from customers. They all wanted to know if the Western crime epic, which runs three hours and 26 minutes, would have an intermission. And, if not, could one be added?
The art house cinema obliged and inserted an eight-minute break. It wasn’t long before a customer’s photo of an ad highlighting the intermission went viral and The Lyric received a call from Paramount, which is distributing the film, saying it had violated the booking contract and fines could be levied. “We didn’t know we had done anything wrong,” says Lyric manager Aaron Varnell, who recently added “chaos cultivator” to his title in a nod to challenging times.
In Long Beach, California, the Art Theatre — a single-screen theater built in 1925 — likewise hoped an intermission would lure more customers to see Killers of the Flower Moon on the big screen, versus waiting 45 days to watch it on Apple TV+. “Our thinking was, we can really make this an event,” says Kerstin Kansteiner, who heads the board of the nonprofit theater. “It gives folks the opportunity to use the restroom, and it could also make for extra concession sales, which is literally how we pay our bills these days.”
The idea was abandoned when the Art’s film booker reached out to Paramount before the film opened and was told an intermission wasn’t allowed. “It was disappointing,” says Kansteiner. “We understand that directors have a vision and don’t want to take the viewer out of the film, but it’s problematic if you make a film that’s three hours and 26 minutes long.” Because the Art has only one screen, the second evening showing didn’t begin until around 9 p.m., with the daunting prospect of a 12:30 a.m. finish.
Cinemas that survived the pandemic are still trying to find their footing during the streaming boom; as much as 15 percent of the moviegoing population hasn’t yet returned to theaters, according to data collected by Hollywood studios. This applies especially to older adults, the target audience for Killers of the Flower Moon and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which runs three hours. These longer films mean fewer showtimes, too, which compounds concerns for cinemas when it comes to ticket sales.
According to the film website What to Watch, the average length of the top 10 movies in 2022 was two hours and 21 minutes, compared to one hour and 50 minutes in 1981. While it’s true that three of the four top-grossing movies of all time at the global box office — Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water and Titanic — run longer than three hours, Vue Cinemas head Tim Richards says that doesn’t mean customers shouldn’t have options.
So Richards engineered a test in which Vue offered its U.K. customers the choice to see Killers of the Flower Moon in one interrupted viewing or with a 15-minute intermission (in Europe they’re known as “intervals” or “comfort breaks”).
“Scorsese is one of the greatest directors of all time, with an extraordinary film, and we didn’t want to alienate any of our customers because of the running time. It is the first time we’ve had an interval in decades,” Richards says. “Right off the bat, 30 percent of our customers chose to watch the movie with an interval even if it meant staying longer. And 85 percent said they would absolutely come back and watch a movie with an interval.” Vue was also asked to cease the breaks, but no fines were issued. (Scorsese, Apple and Paramount haven’t commented since the cinemas were asked to end intermissions.)
Late last year, some theaters had reached out about including an intermission with 20th Century’s Avatar: The Way of Water (three hours and 12 minutes) and said they were told no per the wishes of James Cameron, according to exhibition sources. “Imagine being immersed in the world of Avatar and having a sudden break. It would be hard to get back into the movie,” says one Hollywood studio executive not affiliated with the film. “But I get the frustration with these longer movies on the part of exhibitors.”
Richards and the other cinema operators THR spoke with say any film longer than two hours and 30 minutes might benefit from a break. That would include a slew of recent titles, including Ridley Scott’s new epic, Napoleon.
There’s evidence to back up the theory that intermissions could boost grosses for all involved. The Lyric saw a bigger turnout than usual on the second weekend of Killers of the Flower Moon — before word got out there were no more breaks during the film. Adds Varnell, “People said after, ‘I just kept waiting for the intermission. I really needed to pee.’”

'...Christopher Nolan’s epic biopic, Oppenheimer is now close to kissing its $1 billion mark at the box office, outpacing his timeless masterpiece Inception and becoming the third-highest-grossing flick from the prolific director.
Oppenheimer surpasses Inception, tops third-grossing movie
Christopher Nolan’s historical drama Oppenheimer has now crossed another remarkable box office milestone with $850 million in global ticket sales. With more than six weeks in theaters, the Cillian Murphy opus has now surpassed Leonardo DiCaprio’s action sci-fi Inception to become the third most-earned movie by him. It now proudly stands behind the Batman movies, Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, both of which managed to make $1 billion. Following Interstellar reining the 4th with $ 677 million. Oppenheimer has already beaten its domestic profit of Inception by $292 million.
Oppenheimer, the director’s highest-grossing movie of all time, starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, lifted its prominence in overseas markets, gaining $542.7 in 59 countries, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, India, Brazil, Spain, Italy, and Saudi Arabia. Similarly, the movie alone made $310.2 million in North America after grossing over $7542.7 million during Labor Day weekend.
Being an R-rated movie that predominantly talks about intricate and complex concerns in a less flashy setting of laboratories, offices, and political meetings, it has now become the most collected movie, solely owing to the craftsmanship of cinematic wizard Nolan along with intricating performance from Cillian Murphy. Towards, moving to 50 days of release, will probably reach the $900 million mark sometime in the next week, following the successful target of $1 billion.
Oppenheimer nabs remarkable IMAX success globally
Nolan’s IMAX creation, Oppenheimer, has now earned $170 globally alone in Imax screenings. Raking in the fifth highest-grossing IMAX release in Hollywood, including $2 billion from major blockbusters like Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, Avengers: Endgame, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In China, Oppenheimer has collected $30.8 million alone for IMAX screens.
The Oppenheimer now stands as the third richest movie, alongside the $1 billion glow of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Following Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” with $845 million and Vin Diesel’s Fast X with $704 million, leading the fifth position.
Additionally, from the R-rated section, Oppenheimer became Universal’s first highest-grossing R-rated film with $300 million as well as the biggest R-rated film, surpassing action flick, John Wick: Chapter 4 ($187). Thus it was a huge feat from the American Prometheus to tackle all the summer smashes and secure its spot at the top.'

Box-office records at stake as Avatar: The Way of Water releases
Tumblr media
Indian movie theatres are counting on James Cameron’s highly anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water—slated to release on Friday, 13 years after the first Avatar movie wowed audiences—to boost box-office collections as local offerings fail to impress filmgoers. The sequel sold 1 million tickets on BookMyShow as of Wednesday and may surpass the box office records of Indian and Hollywood hits such as Dangal, KGF: Chapter 2 and Avengers: Endgame. In India, Cameron’s film reported ₹10 crore in advance sales 10 days before release and is being touted as a simple, emotional story with impressive visuals and 3D effects. “Avatar was one of the first non-superhero films that paved the way for compelling stories to transport audiences into a world of fantasy with the support of design and technology. It is also the film that revolutionized the advent of the 3D format of watching movies in cinemas in India with a large number of theatres adopting and turning into 3D with audience demand," said Ashish Saksena, chief operating officer, cinemas, BookMyShow. Anticipation for the sequel was already high, and advance bookings have been impressive, with the trailer adding to the momentum, Saksena said. The English version of the film is driving ticket sales on BookMyShow but is closely followed by the Hindi version, with Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad seeing strong advance sales. With a screen count of 3,500, Avatar 2 is expected to be among the biggest releases of this year across all available formats, including 3D and IMAX versions. While Marvel superhero movies dominate the Hollywood market in India, theatre owners say the Avatar brand has enduring appeal. Read the full article

'Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer has achieved a remarkable milestone, crossing the $700 million mark in global box office earnings, but with the passing of that marker, it's also seen off two blockbusters to secure its place as the fourth-highest grossing film of 2023 to day.
Oppenheimer has outperformed its two closest major competitors, Fast X ($704 million) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($686 million), although it still trails behind the top earners of the year, namely The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.35 billion), Greta Gerwig's Barbie ($1.2 billion), and Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 ($845 million).
During its five-week theatrical run, this R-rated historical drama has amassed an imperious $717.8 million in worldwide box office revenue. This sum includes an immense $285 million from North America and a complementary $437 million from international markets. That $285 million is notable for other reasons too. Earlier this week, Oppenheimer achieved the unique honour of becoming the highest-grossing domestic film in history to never actually top the box office during its theatrical run, a sign of how powerful Barbie's run atop the table has been.
The statistics have also helped establish Oppenheimer as Christopher Nolan's fourth-highest-grossing film of all time. It has surpassed the earnings of his 2014 masterpiece Interstellar ($715 million), but still ranks below the staggering successes of The Dark Knight ($1.006 billion), The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion), and Inception ($837 million). Furthermore, the film stands as Nolan's most successful release in 50 overseas markets, including notable countries like Germany, India, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia.
In North America, Oppenheimer has maintained its position in the top three for over a month. It holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing R-rated film of the year, surpassing John Wick: Chapter 4 ($187 million), and it ranks as the sixth-largest release of 2023, following Disney's The Little Mermaid ($297 million).
Activating IMAX Power
Pushed on by Nolan's dedication to the brand, and a big marketing approach aimed at the format, the movie has excelled in IMAX theaters, collecting an eye-watering $146.4 million from screens featuring the premium format, most impressively collecting over $17 million from 70mm screens alone, of which there are only 30 in the world. With its success, the movie has also earned itself fifth spot among the highest-grossing IMAX films of all time, with the top four spots occupied by $2 billion blockbusters, namely Avatar and its sequel The Way of Water, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Endgame.
Cillian Murphy leads the cast of Oppenheimer as the theoretical physicist who spearheaded the development of the atomic bomb. The ensemble also features Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh and half of Hollywood alongside them...'
