Is there an avatar cycle in this au if so what element is the current avatar born in and will the avatar even make an appearance in the story you’re got going on here
haha here comes the fun part. avatar cycle actually ended on this purple idiot around 20 years ago.
here are some facts about him
- was killed in the avatar state with a lightning while peacefully helping a friend build something.
- the avatar cycle ended on him. its been 20 years since his death and still nobody has found a new avatar.
- Jimmy is the first person who managed to contact the avatar's spirit after his death (mainly it was possible because the spirit allowed Jim to contact him)
- wasn't a good avatar, almost never did his duties. he run away from the air nomads at an early age due to a lot of pressure.
- he liked freedom that much that he was able to master flight bending (the only person who managed to do it ever)
- wears purple to show that he doesnt belong to any nation.
- the thing on his neck was made by a friend metal bender, also his teacher and inventor of metal bending.
- people curse him for ending the avatar cycle, even saying his name is unspokenly forbidden, so none of the crew knows it.
not to be confused with Grian who is regular airbender, they just look oddly familiar for some reason
the reason why I took last life grian as an inspiration is hidden in his life and his death. im not going to spoil everything though

Is the avatar au taking place during aangs time Korras time or after
or just what element was the current born into
it's based on korras time basically because it has more lore components I can use (more bending styles, more advanced metal bending, spirits world etc)
and although its a different world (there weren't the same avatars and characters as in atla universe), this world had a very similar path of development so its very close to korras time

How is Jimmy able to visit the spirit world
what is his method of entry and does he know about grian
the avatar basically invited Jim's spirit there. avatar's able to do it because he's an avatar (who would've thought) and because the edge between the worlds is very slowly erasing again since there's no avatar anymore. also Jim has a nice connection with spirits actually, he might not even realise it himself.
Jim's actual body is probably just asleep while his spirit is there.
he tried to tell Grian about it but he didnt really believe him. Jim often imagined weird stuff when he was a kid (or maybe he saw some actual spirits, who knows)
also the last avatar left both portals open. although nobody is brave enough to actually use them.

for example, Im really thinking about etho being an insane waterbender (bloodbending even) and bdubs being a plant bender and living in the swamp.

what if everyone who was working hard slowly got the idea into their heads that jimmy was the one the avatar spirit picked or would pick because they interact the most
And it’s only once everyone comes to terms with it that it’s revealed that Jimmy is indeed not the avatar
so eventually it will get to the point where everyone is acting like jimmy is The avatar and they are so sure but so so wrong
the avatar spirit thinks this is hilarious and eggs everyone on meanwhile jimmy is in the background being his oblivious self
and the best thing is that Jimmy himself didnt know everyone thought he was an avatar
