Story time: This  particular car has come full circle..1988 NA FC RX7 with an unknown history & a spirit that won’t be snuffed out. I met my buddy on our first touge drive with his other friend, both randoms I met at a gas station the night before. First corner on the local run and the man in back understeers straight off into a tree killing the 91′ miata.. Due to life circumstances he had to sell the car which was in bad shape and, he sold it to his friend (other driver). Me and the friend became close, I helped him rebuild the wrecked miata into a drift missile. New gas tank, subframes, welded diff, suspension, a arms ect. Due to my life circumstances then, I had to move and never got to see the car drive. We stayed friends, and I got to see videos of it driving and drifting. An awesome feeling to see the car I helped put together getting use and enjoyment! Time goes by and the friend ends up trading that missile miata for this 1988 RX7. 187,000 chassis miles. Original NA car, with a turbo ii drivetrain swap running on one rotor, and paint/interior trashed. Car was an wreck..A great financial choice for a college student. So naturally he goes full budget or f-ck it build. Rebuilds the motor, “wires” it together, and has a turbo 13b car. Car is broken and rebuilt throughout the learning process of driving. Car goes to North Carolina, does drift events, touge, street duty. Years down the line buddy moves to where I am. I have the opportunity to drive the car, drift it, work on it, tune, help out with whatever. Felt like a team car. Took it to events, meets, touge. Naturally, life situations, I move again and don’t see the car for 2 years. It gets beat, broken, but not rebuilt. Time goes on, she sits. But cannot be laid to rest. Life situations, blessings, I get the opportunity the own the car. I drive 1200 miles to pick up the rx7. It looked like a barn find when I put it on the trailer, covered in dust. I get it home and assess the issues, fix a few so I can move it about. Rip it around a few times but on one drive it developed a major electrical issue. Car sits for a year due to life situations. I got to work on it for the first time in a while and plan to regularly whenever possible!  I want my friend’s dream and spirit to live on in this car because he was so inspired to piece this thing together. And the way it all came together and the friends who have helped keep it going along the way. And I know he will drive it again and probably even own it one day.. The motor rebuild was pieced with used parts from local rx7 guys. With FD rx7 irons, FD rotors, s5 turbo, s4 rx7 other bits. Along the knowledge passed down by other rotary enthusiasts. A true frankenstein build. This car just has to live and be driven. This car has to scream again! This is how its sitting currently... car was repainted and looked great a few years ago, but now.. its trash Also I dug into the whole wiring mess, isolated every wire (harness was heavily modified)  and properly insulated it all, routed nicely ect. Fixed a ton of connections and bad crimps, bad grounds, redid a lot of the harness. Found wires rubbing through on metal causing shorts, AFR 12v source intermittent connection, battery cable from trunk to starter was about to rub through and cause a fire!  Haven’t taken pics as its been a few weeks since ive been into the shop.. but all that effort I did fixed the major wiring issue and I knew the instant it started up, smooth idle. Took it for a few drives and just fell in love again. The feel, sound, experience of this 80′s chassis with a 250 HP turbo rotary is just something unique and really special. This car is a few steps closer to being track worthy! -I want to delete the swirl pot setup that I don’t trust is routed correctly. And the extra port is capped with a zip tie. Which already blew off once. Rather delete this setup and eliminate extra leak points. -Car has mismatched coilovers with too stiff of springs rates -Car has nice cusco LSD rear end but need adjustable camber and toe bits + alignment -Need extra 5 lug wheels for drift spares -Few minor leaks need to be addressed -I do have bumpers for it, but cosmetics are not priority -Need to rebuild front wheel bearings -Car has Inline hydro e-brake which I am not a fan of. Going to remove it and do a dual caliper setup to retain brake feel -Exhaust leak under the car fills cabin with premix smell

*down the line* -BNR rebuild turbo w/ billet compressor wheel and porting

-New intercooler setup, greddy throttle body inlet, exhaust (it was made quiet for cali..no emissions where the car is now) and retune on new ECU. It’s on an old old 2000s version of adaptronics.

The motor runs great on the current setup.  So I want to keep it simple for now, and just spend more time in the cockpit after I go through and make it a bit more reliable. Dreams, time, money 💖

So a friend of mine has an Etsy store that's taken a hit this year, like many others, and is getting buried by the algorithm under the weight of stores run by corporate manufacturers and sweatshops posing as artisans and small businesses that Etsy won't weed out. Since her work seems very in line with Tumblr's aesthetic, I thought there might be folks on here who would be interested in it!

Substituting plastics with alternative materials is likely to result in increased GHG emissions, according to research from the University of Sheffield. The study by Dr. Fanran Meng from Sheffield's Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Cambridge and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, has revealed the emissions associated with plastic products compared to their alternatives. Published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, the study looked at plastics and their replacements across various applications, including packaging, construction, automotive, textiles and consumer durables. These sectors collectively represent a significant portion of global plastic usage. Findings from the study have revealed that in 15 out of the 16 applications examined, plastic products actually result in lower GHG emissions compared to their alternatives. The reduction in emissions spans from 10 percent to as high as 90 percent across the product life cycle.

Intro to Scouting for Nancy Drew Fans

i love to see Ace's Eagle Scout status come up in fics. Although it was almost a throw-away line, I think it informs Ace's character and fleshes out his backstory well, beyond just knowing knots and navigating the woods. But I see a lot of awkward phrasing, and I see a lot of missed opportunities to bring it up, and it got me wondering if a little primer would be helpful.

Things Ace could say: "I learned this in Boy Scouts." "My troop leader took us out here all the time." "This trail didn't go this way back when I was in Scouts." "Don't worry, they love me here--my eagle project was to clean up this beach." "Don't talk to me about Jared Spriggs-- I'll never forgive him for what he did to my derby car when I was 14."

Eagle Scout is a rank and an honor that he achieved, not a program he was in. The program is Boy Scouts of America (BSA). People familiar with the program will just say Boy Scouts or Scouts. After 100 years of only allowing boys to participate, the program became co-ed in 2019, so it's now called Scouts BSA, not Boy Scouts. Ace would have grown up in the program before then since he turned 18 in 2016.

If Ace started in scouting before he was 11, he would have been in Cub Scouts. At 11, he could move up to the scouting troop. There are ranks in scouting, tied to the number of merit badges you've earned. Eagle Scout is the top rank and must be achieved before the age of 18. It involves a certain number of merit badges, hours of volunteer work, and a main Eagle Scout Service Project that they must plan and execute themselves (with assistance from scout leaders and parents).

I think it highly likely that the Captain was a troop leader or otherwise involved in scouting, especially before his accident. I can see his mom stepping in as well- if I remember right, women could be pack leaders even before 2016.

Although most people work toward Eagle as 16-17 year olds, it's possible to achieve it earlier, especially if you're smart and committed like Ace. So his pot-smoking days could come after he earned Eagle and lost interest in Scouts, or they could coexist. Your call.

Although people assume scouting is about wilderness preparedness, the program's goal is to create well-rounded, responsible citizens. Ace would have the Oath and Law memorized.

As you can guess, being Jewish might have been tricky for Ace in a program that's culturally Christian as many 20th century American institutions are. That'd also depend on what his troop was like--was there one troop for the whole town, or maybe his synagogue hosted a troop?

There's a Sea Scouts program. Where I'm from is landlocked so I don't know anything about it, but Horseshoe Bay or a nearby bigger town would definitely have Sea Scouting!

Lastly, here are the current Merit Badge categories: it covers a lot more than knots! Ace often gets into hacking in pre-series fics by hanging out at the library with his mom after school. But what if he was introduced to programming in Scouts? And I'm sure Florence helped him complete many merit badges.

Nanostructured high entropy alloys—metals made from a chaotic mix of several different elements—show a lot of promise for use in industries such as aerospace and automotive because of their strength and stability at high temperatures compared with regular metals. But they are expensive and energy-intensive to produce. Now, researchers working with the Canadian Light Source (CLS) at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) have found a much cheaper and easier way to make them, opening the door for commercial applications. Michel Haché, a materials engineer at the University of Toronto, and colleagues confirmed that electrodeposition is a cost-effective and easily scaled way to create these alloys. Electrodeposition—which involves dissolving metal ions in water and then using an electric current to pull them out of the liquid and form solid materials—is the same process that is used to make chrome-plated motorcycle parts. The findings are published in the journal Surface and Coatings Technology.

Rivian Automotive, a market leader in producing electric pickup trucks, has struggled with producing electric vehicles (EVs) that can accomplish tasks their gasoline engine counterparts handle with ease. A new report from the Wall Street Journal shows the company also struggles with profitability. The company reportedly loses an average of $33,000 for every truck it sells.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Rivian Automotive has positioned itself as a trailblazer in the electric vehicle sector, aiming to deliver an unparalleled driving experience by combining sports-car handling, advanced features, and robust design in its pick up trucks and other models. But not everything is working out according to the company’s plans.

Rivian’s vehicles, with an average selling price exceeding $80,000, have not resulted in profits. In fact, the company suffered a loss of $33,000 on every vehicle sold in the second quarter. The financial strain is evident, but Rivian Founder and Chief Executive RJ Scaringe claims, “We’re competing to build something that’s truly better than all the alternatives, and to try to do that on a limited budget would be detrimental to us achieving our mission.”

Rivian’s journey has been marked by a juxtaposition of financial success and operational struggles. The company made a splash in the market with its IPO in 2021, raising nearly $12 billion and momentarily achieving a valuation surpassing some established automakers. However, the operational side painted a different picture. Rivian grappled with manufacturing troubles, burning through half of its $18 billion cash pile in two years and operating at less than one-third of its build capacity. The company’s ambitious launch of three models in quick succession further complicated the production dynamics.

Breitbart News previously reported on the poor performance of Rivian’s electric pickups in the real world. In one case, an owner’s “honeymoon phase” ended when his truck got stuck in the snow:

In an interview with Insider, Merrill explains that he was initially overjoyed with his new R1S, saying: “I was in a honeymoon phase. It’s an incredible car, and it handles unlike anything I’ve ever driven.” However, when the car got stuck in 2.5 feet of snow, his love affair with the truck promptly ended. Merrill commented on his expectations, stating: “I had seen all the Rivian marketing campaigns with the cars just eating through the snow, so it was kind of like, man, this is disappointing.” When the Rivian truck became stuck in the snow, a safety feature immobilized the vehicle. The vehicle displayed a critical error and indicated it would have to be taken to a service center. Merrill later suggested that a straightforward reset might have fixed the problem, but Rivian’s customer service did not mention that option during his initial call.

Recently, CEO RJ Scaringe made comments mocking the purchase of gasoline vehicles, seemingly forgetting the problems his electric pickups are constantly running into.

Electrek reports that Rivian CEO, RJ Scaringe, recently compared the purchase of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to “building a horse barn in 1910.” Rivian exceeded market expectations by delivering 12,640 EVs in the second quarter of this year. The company is on track to meet its annual production guidance of 50,000 vehicles. “The performance and drivability of an EV makes it so much more desirable than an alternative,” Scaringe said. He added, “Buying a non-EV just feels very old,” adding that while the environmental responsibility is a factor, he also feels that regular ICE cars are boring.
