TED Donohue was host of the Blackwater Hotel, about a mile out of Adavale on the road to Charleville in the early 1900s. Old Ted (pictured inset) was one of outback Queensland’s true characters. He owned a sulky and a donkey; sometimes he would hear of some old-timer ‘blowing up a cheque’ in one of Adavale’s pubs (pictured). The colourful publican would yoke-up the donkey and drive into town to find his man, have a few drinks, and land him back to finish his cheque with him at the Blackwater pub.
