Chelsea defender Abdul Baba Rahman mutually terminates contract after eight years at Stamford Bridge According to Chelsea Dodgers (as reported by Football London), Abdul Baba Rahman's contract with Chelsea has been mutually terminated, and the defender is on the verge of joining PAOK, a Greek team. Rahman, who is from Ghana, joined Chelsea eight years ago from FC Augsburg in Germany. However, he only played for the Blues for one season, which was the 2015/16 campaign. During that time, he made a total of 23 appearances across various competitions. Following his time at Chelsea, Rahman has been loaned out to several clubs, including Schalke (for two seasons), Mallorca, Stade Reims, PAOK, and Reading.  Initially, his contract with Chelsea was set to expire next year, but they have decided to terminate it early for the benefit of both parties. Now, PAOK has the opportunity to sign him without any transfer fee. 🚨 Chelsea have ended Abdul Baba Rahman's contract a year early and PAOK hopes to sign him as a free agent.Chelsea will get some form of add-on or bonus payment instead if the criteria are met in 23–24.#CFC(@SJohnsonSport & @TheAthleticFC) pic.twitter.com/BWbB8MqHtY— Chelsea Dodgers (@TheBlueDodger) July 3, 2023 Abdul Baba Rahman, who is 29 years old and has represented Ghana 50 times, primarily plays as a left-back but is also capable of operating as a wing-back or wide midfielder in a four or five midfield formation. During his loan stint at PAOK in the latter half of the 2020/21 season, Rahman made 17 appearances for the Greek team. With his recent move, he likely anticipates becoming a regular member of the starting lineup starting from the 2023/24 season. Considering the numerous departures happening at Chelsea, it is a positive development to see Rahman, who hasn't played for the club since 2016 and has consistently been loaned out, finally being removed from the team's roster. Mauricio Pochettino officially began his role as the manager of Chelsea on Monday. He will likely be pleased to see that the club is making a concerted effort to swiftly offload unwanted players, ensuring that he has a squad of players committed to the club's objectives during the pre-season. The proactive approach taken by Chelsea to streamline their squad is highly encouraging. However, it is important to exercise caution to ensure that the outgoings do not compromise the team's depth in specific positions.  Although Abdul Baba Rahman was not considered a necessary player for the club, it is crucial to maintain a balanced squad composition throughout this process. The company is currently focused in introducing new products in the agricultural adjuvants market. For instance, in March 2022, BASF launched an innovative product called Vesnit® Complete, an in-formulation adjuvant, which is a combination of two different modes of action i.e., Topramezone & Atrazine, and an inbuilt adjuvant which makes it unique in effectively controlling grasses & broadleaf weeds for longer duration.
Clariant AG develops, manufactures, distributes, and sells a wide range of specialty chemicals. It operates through four business segments such as care chemicals, catalysis, natural resources, and plastics & coatings. The company offers adjuvants through its care chemicals segment. It offers various types of surfactants for crop care and personal care formulations. The company is focused in acquiring and expanding its production across the globe. For instance, in September 2020, the Company, through its subsidiaries in Mexico, acquired Clariant (Mexico) S.A. de C.V.’s (Clariant) anionic surfactant business located in Santa Clara, Mexico. The acquisition did not include the purchase of a manufacturing site. And in May 2020, Clariant increased its production capacities at the European and US units, which will facilitate the company to fulfil the rising demands for the same in the countries.
Speak to Analyst @ https://www.marketsandmarkets.com/speaktoanalystNew.asp?id=1240
North America is the leading consumer of pesticides due to the high regulatory compliance requirements for pesticide application. As the adoption rate of agricultural adjuvants in these countries remains high, North America dominated the market in 2021. This market is also projected to witness a steady demand during the forecast period.
Since the number of bans on the usage of chemical pesticides in European countries is increasing, the market for agricultural adjuvants is projected to grow at a sluggish rate in this region compared to other regions. On the other hand, with increasing investments in the expansion of production facilities in the Asia Pacific, the market in this region is projected to witness exponential growth during the forecast period.

Hallo! Hope you are well! I love your blog and it’s made me really want to understand and get into Bundesliga. How can I know everything I need to know about Bayern so I’m up to date and understand what’s happening within the team? I hope this makes sense? Danke!
hi anon! i’m so sorry it took me so long to reply to this. this week’s been so busy already.
i guess the internet is a good place to start for your research :) of course wikipedia itself is not a bad source, but if you really want to get information, look at the bottom of the wikipedia page for all the teams in the bundesliga, and get the info from the sources there. that’s what wikipedia uses to write their articles, so that should give you even more insight into the bundesliga and its teams, and rules, etc than you already get from the wikipedia article itself.
i’ll try and sum up the most basic info for you - that i know - and if you have any other questions, feel free to send me another message and maybe we can get into more detail:
bundesliga is the highest “class” / tier that you can play in, in germany. it is divided into 2 different tiers: 1. bundesliga and 2. bundesliga.
1. bundesliga consists of 18 teams.
for the upcoming seasons - currently in alphabetical order because the new season doesn’t start until the 18th of September - these are the teams:
DSC Arminia Bielefeld
FC Augsburg
Bayer Leverkusen
FC Bayern München
Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Mönchengladbach
Eintracht Frankfurt
1. SC Freiburg
Hertha BSC Berlin
TSG Hoffenheim
1. FC Köln
1. FSV Main 05
Red Bull Leipzig
FC Schalke 04
VfB Stuttgart
Union Berlin
Werder Bremen
VfL Wolfsburg
Arminia Bielefeld were promoted from 2nd league, where they ended up in first place in the season of 2019/2020. The second team that was promoted is VfB Stuttgart. In exchange for these two teams being promoted, two teams have to be relegated. In the season of 2019/2020 those two teams were SC Paderborn 07 and Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Back to the Bundesliga Basics:
The Bundesliga stands under the umbrella of “DFB”, or Deutscher Fußball Bund (German Football Association), which was founded in 1900. In 1904 the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) was founded, which is basically the big boss of football. They keep an eye on a number of football associations across the world and also set up the Men’s and Women’s World Cup. DFB joined the FIFA right away in 1904, and in 1954 DFB also joined the UEFA, which is an acronym for Union des Associations Européennes de Football and therefor takes care of all things football in Europe. Self-explanatory.
UEFA wasn’t founded until 1954 because... things happened in Europe in the 30s and 40s.
During the time of the Nazi regime the DFB was dismantled in 1940 and it didn’t pick up again until 1950, when the Federal German Republic was reformed, and the West German football associations decided to get the DFB back up and running. They re-joined FIFA in 1954, and, as mentioned before, also joined UEFA that same year.
The Bundesliga how we know it, however, was not actually a thing until 28. Juli 1962, starting with the season of 1963/1964. Before that there were a number of clubs and associations throughout Germany who all kind of played side by side, and eventually in the 30s the idea of a “Reichsliga” (league of the German Reich) was brought up, where a certain number of teams would play and one would end up winning the title. Kind of what we do now.
And then the war happened.
And in between the end of that and the 60s, obviously they had brought some ideas back to the table, had tried to figure out a more competitive way and to bring football closer to the people.
In 1962 the idea of the Bundesliga was founded. 16 teams were to play each other in one league, competing against each other. 5 from “Oberliga Süd”, 5 from “Oberliga West”, 3 from “Oberliga Nord”, 2 from “Oberliga Südwest” and one from the Berlin City League - the Western part of Berlin, of course.
They had a super complicated system in place to figure out which teams would eventually be allowed to be the “founding fathers” of the Bundesliga. It had to do with economics, they ended up coming up with a weird system for who gets how many points for winning their own league, adding those up, multiplying, and then somehow they ended up with 16 teams... don’t ask me how, I have dyscalculia, I don’t understand their way of thinking at all. Maybe there was some voodoo involved, God knows, honestly.
Eventually they had their 16 winners from the aforementioned leagues:
Oberliga Süd: Eintracht Frankfurt, Karlsruher SC, 1. FC Nürnberg, TSV 1860 München, VfB Stuttgart Oberliga Nord: Eintracht Braunschweig, Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV Oberliga West: Borussia Dortmund, 1. FC Köln, Meidericher SV, Preußen Münster, FC Schalke 04 Oberliga Südwest: 1. FC Kaiserslautern, 1. FC Saarbrücken Stadtliga Berlin: Hertha BSC Berlin
In 1963 this “Bundesliga” wasn’t a pro-league, though. And there were a ton of rules in place that would probably make you go “huh?” these days... or maybe you’d think they are great rules and they need to make a comeback. A transfer, for example, could only cost up to 50.000 German Mark (roughly 25.564,50€ / $30.149,62).
Until 1967 you also weren’t allowed to sign more than three players from another team for the upcoming season.
At some point it was decided that football players would also have the benefits of a full-time worker, if they decided on football as a career, and not just something they did on the side.
When East and West Germany were reunited in 1989 / the early 90s, that’s when the Bundesliga really became more of a commercial success not just in Germany, but also throughout non-German Europe and the rest of the world. Which is also largely due to Germany winning the World Cup in 1990, and the European title in 1996, but the Bundesliga was also specifically marketed to popular media. In 1991 the German Football Association of the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Fußball-Verband der DDR) - the East German football association - joined DFB. Thus Germany was one again, not just on paper, but also in football.
Another thing that helped the popularity of the Bundesliga was the fact that in the 90s at least one Bundesliga club reached a European championship semi-final. In 1997 Borussia Dortmund won the Champions League, in 1996 Bayern München won the Europapokal, in 1997 Schalke 04 won the UEFA-Pokal. And in the following championships at least one German team reached the final of said competitions.
Let’s jump to the 2000s!
Since 2000 FC Bayern München has won the Bundesliga 13 times. The other winners were: Borussia Dortmund (2002, 2011, 2012), Werder Bremen (2004), VfB Stuttgart (2007) and VfL Wolfsburg (2009). Bayern München is also the only Bundesliga team in the 2000s to win the Champions League: 2013 and 2020.
After all that knowledge, here’s some random facts and numbers that you might find interesting:
- since it was founded in 1963, a total of 56 teams have played in Germany’s highest league - until the season of 2017/2018 Hamburger SV was part of the 1. Bundesliga for 55 seasons, which was a record. Now Werder Bremen holds this record, with 56 seasons to their name - Bayer Leverkusen holds the nickname of “Vizekusen” (Vice-Kusen), and they were at one point regarded as the “ever-second”, always getting close to the top, but never reaching it - Karl-Heinz Körbel has the most Bundesliga appearances: 602 - for Eintracht Frankfurt. He never lost a final with Frankfurt and was never relegated. - Bernd Stöber was the youngest coach in the season of 1976/1977 a t just 24 years, 1 month and 17 days old. - Brazil is the best-represented nation after Germany, with 159 Bundesliga exports (159), followed by Denmark (129), Austria (119), Croatia (118) and Poland (109). - in the season of 2019/2020 Thomas Müller had the most assists: 21. - retired football player Gerd Müller, whose active career was between 1965-1979, holds the record for the most goals: 365. - Otto Rehhagel holds the record for most matches as a manager: 832.
Now let’s go back to where we started: the season of 2020/2021.
As mentioned above, the 1. Bundesliga has 18 teams. To get you up-to-date I’ll give you some more info on each team, that you might find useful!

Maybe, to get a feeling for each club, you can check out each club’s YouTube account. Through that you should be able to find their other social media, or just by simply googling the team name:
Arminia Bielefeld ● FC Augsburg ● Bayer 04 Leverkusen ● FC Bayern München  ● Borussia Dortmund ● Borussia Mönchengladbach ● Eintracht Frankfurt ● 1. SC Freiburg ● Hertha BSC Berlin ● TSG Hoffenheim ● 1. FC Köln ● 1. FSV Main 05 ● Red Bull Leipzig ● FC Schalke 04 ● VfB Stuttgart ● Union Berlin ● Werder Bremen ● VfL Wolfsburg
Each football team has 11 players on the pitch. For the new season in 2019 it was decided that instead of 18 players, each team would be allowed to have 20 players in total - which means 9 substitute players on the bench.
During each season a team can win three main cups (the ones that everyone cares about the most, let’s be real): DFB-Pokal, Meistertitel (Bundesliga winner) and Champions League trophy. The last of which is not a German tournament / cup to be won, so I’ll leave that out for now.
DFB Pokal:
The DFB-Pokal is a German knockout competition, starting out with 64 teams. 36 teams are from the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, the top four finishers of the third league are automatically added to the list. 21 slots are given to the cup winners of regional football associations, and the remaining 3 slots are given to the regional associations with the most men’s teams.
Direct quote from Wikipedia, which in turn got their information from here: for the first round, the 64 teams are split into two pots of 32. One pot contains the 18 teams from the previous season of the Bundesliga and the top 14 teams from the previous season of the 2. Bundesliga. The other pot contains the bottom 4 teams from the previous season of the 2. Bundesliga, the top 4 teams from the previous season of the 3. Liga and the 24 amateur teams that qualified through regional football tournaments. Teams from one pot are drawn against teams from the other pot. Since 1982, teams from the pot containing amateur teams have played the game at home. For the second round, the teams are again divided into two pots according to the same principles. Depending on the results of the first round, the pots might not be equal in terms of number. Teams from one pot are drawn against teams from the other pot until one pot is empty. The remaining teams are then drawn against each other with the team first drawn playing the game at home. For the remaining rounds, other than the final, the teams are drawn from one pot. Since 1985 the final has been held in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
Meistertitel:
The Meistertitel is rewarded to the team that comes out on top on the last match-day of the season. Of course it can be calculated whether other teams can still catch up - points-wise - but the Meisterschale is not rewarded until the season is over. The current record-holder of most Bundesliga wins is FC Bayern München (29), followed by Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach (5) and Werder Bremen (4) in second and third place.
With the first three Bundesliga wins a team gets a gold star to put on their jersey, with five wins they get a second, ten wins is a third, twenty wins is a forth star. On top of that, the reigning Bundesliga champion gets to wear the Bundesliga logo in gold color on their sleeve.
And that’s that on that.
I don’t know what language you’re fluent in, but here are some football apps that you might enjoy using, to be on track with the upcoming season:
OneFootball
Kicker App
Bundesliga App
11 Freunde App
Amazon Bundesliga Radio
each team’s individual app for updates and news
You can also check out @bundesliga_en on Instagram and Twitter.
One last info for you, so you can jump right into it on the first day of the new Bundesliga season (fixtures are never really 100% until a day or two before the match is supposed to be, so this is preliminary): here is the link for the schedule of the upcoming 1. Bundesliga season.
You can also check out the 2. Bundesliga schedule, because it’s super interesting down there in the second league as well! I highly recommend it (keep your fingers crossed for Paderborn for me!).
I think that’s about everything I can tell you. This reply is already faaaaaaaaar too long, and I apologize! If you have any questions or want me to elaborate, feel free to send me another message.
Have the best time getting used to the Bundesliga, and welcome to the family!

Music reviews by Laurent Fairon, May 2021
Martyn Schmidt – Kammerton a'a (January 2021) VA – Objetos Musicais: Homage to Walter Smetak (April 2021) VA – The Same River Twice (April 2021) Mark Vernon – Magneto Mori: Vienna (June 2021)
.    .    .   .    .    .   .    .    .   .    .    .   .    .    .   .
Martyn Schmidt – Kammerton a'a (self-release) https://martynschmidt.bandcamp.com/track/kammerton-aa-i "Kammerton a'a" is a hörspiel, a German radio art piece centered on the city of Aalen in the Swabian Alps in Southern Germany. It is the birth-place of Martyn Schmidt, born 1969, a German sound poet and musician, publisher of sound poetry releases on his own Atemwerft label from 2014 to 2017 [www.atemwerft.de]. Currently living in Augsburg, Schmidt is naturally associated with the prolific Attenuation Circuit label and the very active local live scene. "Kammerton a'a" is actually called a hörpoem, or sound poem, a poetic, free-flowing meditation on post-WWII Germany in a small provincial city devastated by Allied bombings. The focus is on piano sounds—actual or remembered, verbal or musical, from the present or from the past—, in a city where the mayor after 1945 was a piano builder himself. According to Martyn Schmidt, the underlying concept behind "Kammerton a'a" (meaning Standard Pitch A440 Hz) is to consider the role of the post-WWII piano tuner as having to re-tune Germany to the universal harmony, a lovely metaphor for post-war normalization, I think. Indeed, in "Kammerton a'a", the city literally exudes piano music. In addition to readings from a piano manufacturing manual and poems from local poet Christian Schubart (1739-1791), "Kammerton a'a" is based on interviews with 3 main protagonists from Aalen: a former journalist during WWII ; memories from a former piano builder working at the local piano factory until its closure in 1973 ; and a contemporary piano tuner. There are other references to local citizens, piano teachers, philosophers or journalists located in or originally from Aalen, so that "Kammerton a'a" is also a portrait—and a redeeming—of a city. The language is mostly Schwabish, the vernacular Swabian dialect derived from German, and this picturesque dialect is part of the charm of "Kammerton a'a". Alternating between interviews, poetry readings and archive radio broadcasts, the spoken word is completed with piano music snippets, inside the piano playing, church bells, location recordings and occasional musique concrète or electronic sounds. These musical and documentary sounds punctuate the hörpoem and, along with the superbly recorded voices, contribute to its unique sound signature.
VA – Objetos Musicais: Homage to Walter Smetak (Buh Records) https://buhrecords.bandcamp.com/album/objetos-musicais-homage-to-walter-smetak Conceived as an homage to Swiss-born, Brazilian composer and instrument builder Walter Smetak (1913–84), this compilation collects music produced by sound artists and contemporary artists from South American countries and Switzerland. These artists present their own vision of 'Caossonância', a Smetak concept based on the Portuguese words for chaos and sound, where invented or modified instruments are used to produce strange sounds in musical experiments welcoming unusual tunings and aleatoric sonic discoveries. Participants to this compilation tend to focus on strings and percussion instruments, sometimes with motorized objects hitting or scraping strings, skins or metal tubes, with only one wind instrument (Javier Bustos' Aerodrones). Many contributors use electronic sound processing or computer post production to complement their music. 'Objetos Musicais' features many interesting sounds from weird music instruments—some pleasantly otherworldly, some on the nice side of noise—though, on the whole, there is a lack of contrast from one sound excerpt to another as well as within each track. Indeed, contributors here are not improvisors nor composers, and they often fail to engage with the sound in interesting and exciting ways. The number of music instruments one can conceive of being limited, the musical invention must come from the way they are played, contrasted with other sounds, and part of a larger musical vision. I enjoyed this compilation's concept very much, though, and think it's great there are still instrument builders and sound sculptors around.
VA – The Same River Twice (Hotham Sound Recordings) https://hothamsoundrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/the-same-river-twice The ancient art of compilation making is more or less lost nowadays and it's rare to stumble on a well curated project with a strong, unifying concept. Conceived by Canadian, Vancouver-based label Hotham Sound, 'The Same River Twice' is that rare beast: a Various Artists album that flows effortlessly and excitingly like a regular album. Fifty artists worldwide contributed one minute of music each using the last sounds of the previous contributor as their starting point, adding up to the whole via the internet in a kind of mail-art chain, or Surrealist Exquisite Corpse. The style is experimental-ambient with a great variety of sounds, from abstract textures to real instruments like piano, harp, flute or Spanish guitar, onto electronic music through to spoken word. I suppose someone at Hotham Sound curated the whole shebang throughout in a way or another, because transitions between tracks are both seamless and pertinent, full of surprises and excitement. The LP comprises 2 side-long tracks, the A-side roughly featuring the more abstract and acoustic music, while the B-side includes more electronic sounds and occasional beats, as well as field recording and melodica. In any case, both sides hugely benefit from the Exquisite Corpse process, a brilliant idea yielding quasi magical results here. I recognized only a few names in there, like Karl Fousek, M Geddes Gengras or Lance Austin Olsen, most of the other names being new to me. A fantastic album anyway.
Mark Vernon – Magneto Mori: Vienna (Canti Magnetici) https://cantimagnetici.bandcamp.com/album/magneto-mori-vienna Commissioned by Austrian national radio ORF Ö1, "Magneto Mori: Vienna" is a hörspiel conceived by Scottish sound artist Mark Vernon as a portrait of the city through original location recordings done in 2018, plus other vernacular sound documents like dictaphone recordings, cassettes or reel-to-reel tapes, all found in Vienna flea markets. We hear street noises, dictaphone spoken word and outdoor conversations in Viennese dialect, street musicians, manipulated sounds, electronic sounds, musique concrète. Typical from Mark Vernon is the very lively montage of short sound excerpts, adroitly contrasted with each other in cut-up fashion before quickly moving on to other things. Additionally, the original hour-long radio work was broken into 11 short, manageable tracks for this LP release—so every precaution was taken to avoid listening fatigue. Vernon's sound palette in "Magneto Mori: Vienna" is keen on playing with dichotomies and striking oppositions in his choice of sounds: outdoor vs indoor, near vs far, natural vs electronic, resonant vs damped sounds. The technique could be called 'extended hörspiel', blending the hörspiel idiom with electroacoustic music and musique concrète. A less skilled composer might have come up with a boring travelogue smelling tourist perambulations and Traveler’s cheques, but not so with Mark Vernon, as he managed to give a vivid impression of Vienna’s busy streets through sound collage and electroacoustic music technique. This talent of his was also prevalent in a previous work, The Dominion of Din (2020), which consisted solely of street recordings made from his Glasgow flat windows over an 18-year period, and was incredibly lively, eventful, surprising and fun.

Calacus Weekly Hit & Miss – Carl Nassib & UEFA
Every Monday we look at the best and worst communicators in the sports world from the previous week.
HIT – CARL NASSIB
“I hope that one day videos like this and the whole coming out process are just not necessary," said Carl Nassib, the Las Vegas Raiders’ defensive end after revealing that he is gay.
In making his admission, during Pride month no less, Nassib becomes the first active National Football League player to come out publicly.
Nassib added: "I'm a pretty private person so I hope that you guys know that I'm really not doing this for attention. I just think that representation and visibility are so important.
"I'm going to do my best to cultivate a culture that's accepting and compassionate."
He followed up with a written message admitting that he had “agonised over this moment for the last 15 years” and it was only after he received so much encouragement from family and friends that he decided to go ahead.
“I am also incredibly thankful for the NFL, my coaches, and fellow players for their support,” Nassib wrote. “I would not have been able to do this without them. From the jump I was greeted with the utmost respect and acceptance.”
Nassib is also donating £100,000 to the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention service for LGBTQ youth in America, a creditable gesture which highlights his understanding of the struggles many young people face.
Amit Paley, CEO & Executive Director of The Trevor Project, gave thanks to Nassib for his generosity and said: “The Trevor Project is grateful to Carl Nassib for living his truth and supporting LGBTQ youth. Coming out is an intensely personal decision, and it can be an incredibly scary and difficult one to make. We hope that Carl’s historic representation in the NFL will inspire young LGBTQ athletes across the country to live their truth and pursue their dreams.
“At a time when state lawmakers are actively trying to restrict transgender and nonbinary youth’s participation in school sports, this news should serve as a clarion call for greater LGBTQ inclusion in the locker room and on the field.”
Of those who have admitted that they are gay in the past, Michael Sam came out before being drafted into the league in 2014, but never played a regular season NFL game.
Roy Simmons, who played for the Giants and Washington in the 1980s, was one of a number of players to come out after retiring. He told the New York Times in 2003 that he did not feel safe announcing that he was gay while he was in the NFL.
“The NFL has a reputation,” he said at the time, “and it’s not even a verbal thing – it’s just known. You are gladiators; you are male; you kick butt.”
Hall of fame quarterback Warren Moon revealed that gay players had long been a part of the NFL. He tweeted: “As long as they helped us win and were great teammates- their sexual preference was never a issue..
“We live in a different time now where diversity is much more accepted. Cheers Carl, and I hope this lets other athletes know, its OK to say who you are...”
The Raiders tweeted: “Proud of you, Carl” while club owner Mark Davis played down the significance of the announcement and said: “He’s a Raider. If he’s happy, I’m happy. It takes courage. I thought we got to the point where this wasn’t (a story). It doesn’t change my opinion of him as a man or as a Raider.”
The NFL was swift to offer their support for Nassib with Commissioner Roger Goodell saying: “The NFL family is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today. Representation matters.
“We share his hope that someday soon statements like his will no longer be newsworthy as we march toward full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. We wish Carl the best of luck this coming season.”
NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith added: "Our union supports Carl and his work with the Trevor Project is proof that he -- like our membership -- is about making his community and this world a better place not for themselves, but for others."
Certainly 20 years ago, Nassib’s announcement may have ended his career based on the macho culture within the NFL locker rooms but the fact that his shirt was the top-selling NFL jersey on its network after his announcement according to sports apparel retailer Fanatics.
Nassib is now a poster boy for a new era in American Football and it is to his credit that he is embracing the challenge.
"I do not know all the history behind our courageous LGBTQ community," he added, "but I am eager to learn and to help continue the fight for equality and acceptance."
MISS – UEFA
The football community has been largely united in support for the LGBTQ+ community recently, from European players donning rainbow laces and calling out blatant acts of homophobia.
However, UEFA have been criticised for not explicitly challenging or condemning homophobia during Pride month.
German captain Manuel Neuer’s decision to wear a rainbow-coloured armband was initially banned by UEFA before they quickly changed their position.
UEFA then last week rejected a request to illuminate the Allianz Arena in Munich with rainbow colours during the EURO 2020 Group F match between Germany and Hungary.
There was suspicion that the proposal was a response to new Hungarian legislation, which has banned the promotion of homosexuality to those under the age of 18.
In a statement posted on social media, UEFA defended their decision by saying: “UEFA is proud to wear the colours of the rainbow. It is a symbol that embodies our core values, promoting everything that we believe in.
“Some people have interpreted UEFA’s decision to turn down the city of Munich’s request to illuminate the Munich stadium in rainbow colours for a Euro 2020 match as ‘political’. On the contrary, the request itself was political, linked to the Hungarian football team’s presence in the stadium for this evening’s match with Germany.”
The major of Munich, Dieter Reiter, was one of many who saw this as a missed opportunity from UEFA and he had hoped that the illuminations during the match would “send a visible sign of solidarity” with Hungary’s LGBTQ+ community.
The Germany and Hungary game finished 2-2 and summed up the mood from the footballing community perfectly towards homophobia and UEFA’s decision.
A pitch invader took to the field with a rainbow flag as the Hungarian National anthem blared out around the stadium, while Leon Goretza celebrated his late equaliser for Germany by running over to away fans and making a heart gesture with his hands, conveying the simple message that homophobia will not be tolerated.
Undoubtedly, UEFA have not a strong and clear position regarding homophobia throughout the EURO 2020 tournament.
Earlier, during Hungary’s opening Group F game against Portugal in Budapest, a set of Hungarian fans were seen holding a sign that read “Anti-LMBTQ”.
UEFA had an opportunity to react instantly to confirm the LGBTQ+ community as equals in society and in football but its delays had the result of many feeling unwelcome.
It took five days for UEFA to release a short statement on their website on the incident and no action has since been taken against Hungary.
The delay meant the message was not instantly dismissed, which suggests UEFA do not take the issue seriously enough.
Joe White, a spokesperson for the LGBTQ+ fans group 3LionsPride, has criticised UEFA’s messaging. In a statement, he said: “UEFA will tout themselves as supporters of equality and rainbow-wash their brand when it suits them, but rarely proactively engage or make improvements for LGBTQ+ people involved in the game.
“LGBTQ+ people across the game are not able to enjoy football when they have to face hatred in stadia and online.
“It’s clear that UEFA once again has its head firmly buried in the sand and is no ally of the LGBTQ+ community. Until UEFA start taking serious action against discrimination, the beautiful game is once again allowing its ugly side to rear its head.”
The rainbow symbol in football stadia reassures to LGBTQ+ individuals watching EURO 2020 that they are welcome in football. It demonstrates that attitudes towards homosexuality are improving within the sport.
Without the rainbow, particularly during Pride Month, those messages are lost.
Germany has led a continental call for greater LGBTQ+ unity throughout football. In the days following the UEFA Allianz Arena rejection, officials across Germany ignored the guidance, as stadia in Frankfurt, Augsburg and Nuremberg, as well as in Belgium, joined Munich by lighting up in rainbow colours.
Elsewhere, UEFA sponsor Booking.com, will use a rainbow outline in all of their pitch-side adverts for Round of 16 matches, including Holland’s game against the Czech Republic in Budapest.
Ahead of the tie in the Hungarian capital, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that Hungary has “no place in the EU,” unless they retract their homophobic laws.
UEFA have demonstrated that the rainbow symbol will not be universally accepted in football, which is hardly consistent with their own claims to be pro-LGBTQ+.
The inconsistency shown by European football’s governing body during Euro 2020 underlines the fact that they have a long way to go to regain the confidence of the LGBTQ+ community.
Perhaps it is time for UEFA to go back to the drawing board and come up with a consistent policy which allows freedom of expression in the promotion of sexual equality.
