SUCH A TIME AS THIS - read on AO3
An AU retelling of the story of Queen Esther with Anne Boleyn as a Persian Jewish woman.
"You have come to your royal position for such a time as this"
And so Anne has three selves. Three stories. Anne Boleyn, English Lady with an interest in the reformed religion, Amara who learns the Hebrew and Persian tongue and keeps the Sabbath with joy and Esther who wishes she did not hide herself.

Nostalgia: AU at its Finest
One of the reasons why I love fiction, is because it shows that there are no limits to human imagination. We are inventive creatures. It’s in our nature. With it, also comes a knack to cling on to false memories, or twisted versions of a past that never was.
Gone with the wind is one of the greatest movies of all time. I haven’t read the book, but those who have tell me that it is great too. The movie opens up after a long overture with the following legend:
“There was a land of Cavaliers and Cotton Fields called the Old South… Here in this pretty world Gallantry took its last bow … Here was the last ever to be seen of Knights and their Ladies Fair, of Master and Slave … Look for it only in books for it is no more than a dream remembered. A Civilization gone with the wind.”
Romanticizing history is nothing new. It’s usually harmless but every once in a while there is an effort by novelists and pop historians to push a nostalgic (and authoritative) form of narrative, painting the past with a broad brush, in the name of revisionist history. And as its previously been established, revisionist history can be a good thing when done right. But this is not one of those cases.
As one author said of the past, it is an entirely different world. People felt just as strongly about their loved ones and politics as you or I, but they saw the world differently.
Currently, I am working on something regarding “Convivencia” for my blog and my co-author, Helen R. Davis’ blog. The article will deal with information taken from BOTH Christian and Islamic sources.
The truth is, that as the Tudors and their Renaissance peers strived to paint the medieval period as the high point of ignorance, so have many pop historians and novelists strived to portray this practice as the highpoint of Spain’s golden age, or proof of religious tolerance.
Here is the stone cold truth: There was NO such thing as tolerance. You want tolerance? Tolerance means you put up with something, not that you necessarily like or accept it. The so called religious tolerance that came with Convivencia was hypocritical at best. You agreed to tolerate the “people of the book” as long as they paid a special tax (Jizya or Jyzyah).
And this was only for “people of the book”, meaning those who followed the Abrahamic God. Pagans did not get this deal. They were heathens, hence their new overlords went ‘they got to go.’ ‘Convert or else.’
Secondly, religious minorities within Islamic kingdoms were not free from discrimination. Christian kingdoms would not tolerate religious minorities who did not abide by their rule, the same went for Islamic kingdoms or Taifa kingdoms in Spain. You either followed the rule or you face the consequences. Plain and simple.
And if you were one of these religious minorities, you better hopes to God that there was no famine or economic crisis because if there was, then your group would be the first one people would point fingers at.
Look to the Tudors for this as well. Elizabeth I practiced some minor form of tolerance, but it was largely due to her necessity to look for allies against her Catholic enemies. As a result, she and the Ottoman empire became good allies. But this alliance is not all it is often thought out to be. If it weren’t for the Sultan’s mother, Safiye Sultan, this alliance would not have lasted as long as it did.
Jerry Brotton outlines this perfectly in his book The Sultan and the Queen. So does John Guy in his biography of the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth: the Forgotten Years. The Queen expressed disappointment that the Sultan wasn’t willing to commit more to the war effort against Spain and other Catholic nations as she was. Whenever he expressed second thoughts, she’d go directly to his mother (whom many regarded as the true power behind the throne). The two women wrote to each other often, and exchanged many gifts.
While Elizabeth, Murad III and his mother Safiye, put up with one another to safeguard their interests, something similar occurred with her Catholic subjects. One half of them still saw her as illegitimate and would plot against her until the end of her reign, and the other were torn between siding with their church, or proving their loyalty to a Queen they considered a heretic.
Henry VIII liked the ideas expressed by Martin Luther, and other Protestant thinkers Anne Boleyn introduced him to, but once he got a taste of true power, to quote Sir Thomas More (the man who was once his mentor and whom he beheaded) “when the lion knows his strength, no man can control him.” He began to go not just after those who sided with Rome or did not sign the Oath of Supremacy which recognized him as Supreme Head of the Anglican Church, he also went after Protestants as well.
Mary I initially thought she could appease all sides, but after Wyatt’s rebellion, she began to go after Protestants and while remaining a Catholic, she wasn’t afraid to voice her complaints to fellow Catholics who refused to follow her orders.
There seemed to be a certain level of acceptance among converts or descendants of Conversos and Moriskos (Jewish and Moorish converts respectively, who had converted to Christianity) in England as there was in Spain. In her book Black Tudors, Miranda Kauffman, gives many examples of African merchants and artists who settled in England during the middle ages and the beginning of the Renaissance and thrived in these professions. One of them is John Blanke, the Tudors’ black trumpeter who appears in one of the rolls of Henry VII’s coronation.
But as with the struggles faced by religious minorities living under the convivencia system, these people had to constantly prove their loyalty by working harder than anyone else; and as religious tensions continued to grow, disaffected nobles and commoners began to envy their success.
Once more, I can see why romanticizing certain historical eras and its practices has become so attractive. It makes for entertaining story-teller, fairy-tale-like, but by the end of the day, they are nothing more than a distorted version of the past. It is how we want to remember the past, and for some, how they want the past to be remembered, as the “good old days”. The more we start to read on these eras, we find that the “good old days” weren’t that good.

Anne Boleyn & Katherine of Aragon, Compass Rose meme
For @avani008
North
first encounter | (turnabout is) fair play | fool’s gold | forbidden fruit | the female of the species is more deadly than the male
“You would have your daughter nail herself to the mast of your sinking ship? You would not advise her to bail? Drown yourself if you must, but why must you insist your daughter play the martyr?” Anne snaps.
“Mary is no martyr, Lady Anne,” Katherine says with all the dignity of a true queen. “She is a Princess of the Blood, and will be Queen someday, no matter how many bastards you present His Majesty with.”
Anne does not rise to the insult, for once. She merely shakes her head. “You know the King well, I am sure. You know how he treats those who do not obey him.”
“I know what God wills for me, and what my destiny is, Lady Anne. You will understand me, one day, when you have a daughter. You will understand when you hold your little girl in your arms, and know that she deserves so much more.”
South
(cold) comfort | confession | cloak and dagger | crocodile tears | charmed life
(India!AU)
It is not that Katyayani resents her husband’s new concubine Ananya and her presence in the palace. For all Katyayani loves her only surviving child Miriam, she knows she failed to give the King a son, and he is within his rights to take a younger wife in the hopes of giving the kingdom the stability of a male successor.
But for him to claim that Katyayani was never his wife at all, that Miriam was born out of wedlock, to take away their titles of Rani and Rajkumari -- that Katyayani cannot and will never forgive. Especially when Ananya has only produced a daughter, Elavarasi, so far -- a healthy daughter, but only a girl -- and there is no need to add insult to injury.
He even insists that Miriam work as a made: Miriam, the moti of his world, whom he used to carry on his shoulders.
Which is why Katyayani is quietly, pathetically grateful to Ananya for teaching Elavarasi to call Miriam didi. The fewer people who call Miriam dasi, the better.

Set in @mihrsuri’s Such a Time As This (Jewish!Anne Boleyn AU)
Katherine does not know what power this new woman has that convinces Henry to allow her to see Mary. To hold such influence that he closes monasteries even before she gives him a son?
(She knows. She remembers the sway she held over him in those early days, when they were still Harry and Catalina to each other, and to know another woman holds him in such sway is the bitterest gall.)
But still. She is also an Infanta of Spain and can be gracious when she needs to be. And for Mary’s sake. There is nothing and nobody she would not serve for Mary’s sake. So she smiles when Lady (Queen) Anne gives birth to (twin) sons, and is surprised to find that her congratulations are somewhat genuine.
And then Queen Anne reveals she is a Jew and Cardinal Wolsey is arrested and the Jews of England come crawling out of the ghettos like cockroaches out of a waxwork and Katherine’s entire world is shaken and burned to ash all at once.
A Jew. Not even a heretic, but a Jew. The Jews that her mother stamped out with the Inquisition and sent into exile where they belong. Katherine owes her life to a woman who comes from a people that poisons wells and mixes the blood of babies into their matzoh.
Katherine had thought she was used to being thrown about on the waves of fate, but the latest shore she has crashed on may be the most confusing yet to navigate.
West
just in time | joined at the hip | jam tomorrow | juvenile | journey’s end
They both spent seven years waiting for their crowns.
They both presented their king with one daughter and a slew of dead boys.
They both die with the words, “To God I commend my soul” on their lips.

I just realised that in Such A Time As This I wrote Anne making challah and my brain just now went ‘…fuck did 16th century Persian Jews make challah? Did European Jews? Does my tiny secret alt!history community of English Jews* make it?’ And like, I swear I checked but I cannot remember. The agonies of hist!fic etc ;)
*There was a community, a tiny one as a secret but not in Elizabethan London, but officially they were very much Not There and it was obviously dangerous.
(Yes I’m Persian/Syrian Jewish (biracial) but it’s a slow reclaiming my heritage and faith project and writing this was part of it)

hiii! Here's a ⭐ for the fic writers' director's cut if there's a particular bit you'd like to talk about! <33333
She goes to the French Court hiding her story so well it almost becomes unreal - the little girl Amara who danced in silks and painted henna onto her hands and arms, who made the challah and drank hot mint tea and teased her older siblings in languages she is not supposed to know. Here she is Anne Boleyn - the bright over young child who becomes a favourite of Marguerite of Navarre and later Queen Claude and who debates theology and learns new dances, new music, new languages and stories. She loves to learn. In the end though, she finds herself saying her Jewish prayers in her head while sitting in a Christian church and biting her tongue when there is any debate or mention of the Jewish people.
("You are talking of me, of my family" she wants to say to the courtiers when they sneer or repeat the stories about the Jewish monsters who steal babies to make matzoh and mix the blood in with their gold and have poisoned all the wells in France. But it would do no good at all). And she should be used to hearing this - as it has been around her all her life and it would not change - to be Jewish was to be safe nowhere.
I had to use the whole passage because this. This was pretty much The Thesis Statement of this entire fic - both as a retelling of the Esther Story and for the fic itself. (There’s also an extended edition somewhere in my head about Anne’s time in France, the lives of French Jews in the 1500s incidentally).
It’s the ‘this should not hurt to hear because I’ve been hearing it all my life’ paragraph! Because it still does hurt, especially when it’s someone who likes you and who you like, who might see you as a bit different but that’s okay (as long as you aren’t Too Different, as long as you don’t stray outside of the line) and yet, they don’t see you. And you aren’t safe, not really. And you know you never can be. (I also wrote the entire anti-semitism list from historical sources of Absolute Bullshit People Believed Was True About Jews).

27. Is there a fic you were nervous to post/share? Why?
Without a doubt Such A Time As This because it’s so personal (I’m a biracial Persian Jewish woman working on reclaiming my heritage/faith) and I was so scared of getting it wrong and also sharing so much. (Aka the retelling of the story of Esther with Anne Boleyn as a Persian Jewish woman)
I think the OT3 verse I wasn’t so scared (I am admittedly terrified of sharing everything but it was kind of normal level if that makes any sense?) because I’d embraced it as you know what, this is my comfort AU, I’m going to have fun!

The thing about Tudor England is that every single ruler (and also society) was Anti-Semitic As Fuck and I wrote Such A Time As This in large part as a reaction to that.
(I also imagine that the Persian/Biracial thing has an impact but I am not schooled enough on that one).

My Jewish Anne Boleyn AU was based both on Esther and also on the fact that I learned about the Jewish Community (in secret not secret but secret) in Elizabethan London and also the links with the Ottoman Empire and almost certainly Persia. The main idea was that the Boleyn family were Persian Jewish nobles/merchants who had come to England either for opportunities, the offer of a haven (they knew the family of a Syrian Jewish noblewoman who become the Duke of Norfolk’s second wife aka Elizabeth Howard’s mother) or both. They hid their origins and faith and built a place away from home.
It was about being safe but never actually safe anywhere, about being neither one or the other as a biracial person but also about the joy of it - of being Jewish, of being Jewish in a community and of the defiance of it. Also I had fun judging bad hats.

A thing I did learn while writing Jewish Anne Boleyn fic (via friend) - there was a very small Jewish Community in Elizabethan London as a secret but not a secret (I just moved it further back in time) and that was Fascinating and one day I will find out more

😅🪡🎡
😅 Was there a fic/chapter that you were nervous about posting? Why? I’ve said this before but I was so nervous to post Such A Time As This (aka the Jewish Anne Boleyn AU) because it was so so personal and I was terrified of like, getting things wrong/being yelled at. I don’t actually know how I managed to post it in the end!
🪡 The scene you worked the hardest on in any fic? I got stuck on the final chapter of Such A Time As This for a really long time (eventually I worked it out via telling it via tumblr style meme posting and then also being like ‘who had the worst hat in Showtimes The Tudors’ and going from there). But I worked really hard to get it right.
🎡 Your favorite scene to write in -insert fic-? A lot of the time it’s really when everything just comes together so perfectly and I’m just the conduit for the words! So I loved, just adored writing the first scene of Rewrite The Stars because the image was so vivid in my brain and it came out exactly how I wanted it to.

💖🧑‍🏫🥘🟥🐎?
💖 Which of your fics is your pride and joy? Jewish Anne Boleyn my beloved.
👩‍🏫Pick a character and I'll tell you their favorite season and why. I really really love S2/3 Abigail Bartlet. Stockard is so good always but like MY FEELS.
🥘What wip are you most excited about? All of them *g* Right now I’m really excited I had a breakthrough with my big WIP (rewrite the stars 2.0) - I got into the head of a character that I’d been struggling with and it’s So Cool because we haven’t heard from him before.
🟥How long do you spend in edits? Both a long time and like, not a long time at all because of the way my brain works! I spend a long time thinking things out in my head/trying out things that work (also in my head)/sometimes on pinterest and listening to music and talking about it to friends (I love talking about our WIPs with friends LOVE IT) and then I’ll write something/write it down and then I’ll go over for spelling/grammar/structure (I’ve found with long fic I’ll sometimes reorder parts of a chapter these days) and then post because if I look at it too much I’ll get in my head.
🐎 Would you ever do a medieval or pirate au? WOULD I EVER (I think I’d pretty much try out most AU’s because I love going ‘…how could I make this work’ (excluding omega verse for Trauma Bullshit Reasons). I have actually extensively plotted out a West Wing medieval AU in my head (I just want Charlie to so comprehensively outrank Jean Paul it’s Terrifying To That Guy but I’m not sure what his title would be) for example. Although now I’m considering Pirate Captain Abigail Romance Novel Style except she’s obviously the Dashing Swashbuckling Hero.

My (main) AUs: An Overview
I thought I’d do this because (a) new people and (b) I like to do a summary for self indulgent sharing reasons. Also I have a Lot Of AUs but the main one(s) you are going to be hearing about here are:
The Tudors OT3 Cinematic Universe aka The Emotional Support Tudors AU aka The Tudor Triad
The Grishaverse Hunger Games Found Family + Poly Verse
Crown Of Ashes aka The Tudor Triad Verse In Universe Hist!Fic AU
The Tudor Triad
Fandom: The Tudors (TV + Some History)
Works: On AO3 here (WIP) - check out my pinned post for more information as well.
Tags on my tumblr: ot3: political power trio, tudors ot3 verse reference
Summary: In another world this is how it might have gone between the three of them. The story of how the love between three extraordinary people change the world for the better and made it the kindest. The story of a fight for a fairytale
The OT3 verse is a story at base about an alternate history that leads to the kindest possible world, written by a mizrahi jewish woman who really really wanted to write it. Or ‘bi poly triad/hot thomas cromwell saves the world dot gif’ ;).
In which Anne Boleyn is born in 1510, Thomas Cromwell in 1505 and Henry VIII does a (debatably?) better choice and goes for a divorce in 1520. And all three of them dramatically come together in 1536 (Anne and Henry have been married for three years but) and Anne Boleyn’s oldest son marries Mihrimah Sultan, who here is the youngest child of her parents and whose brothers have made a pact to end the fratricide independently of anyone English and they bring about a golden world.
Aesthetic:
Tumblr media
Grishaverse Hunger Games
Fandom: Grishaverse (Show and Books) Hunger Games AU
Works: On AO3 here (WIP)
Tags on my tumblr: au: grishaverse hunger games
Summary: In the end, they will be more than what has been done to them. Kaz, Inej, Nikolai, Nina, Zoya and Genya in the Hunger Games and around it.
My contribution to my Grisha-Crows-Nikolai (and Mal) found family poly feels - featuring not Darkling friend Darkling/Alina/Nikolai in which he takes them as sex slaves while calling it love essentially and gets bought down.
Aesthetic:
Tumblr media
Crown Of Ashes
Fandom: The Tudors (TV + History + In The OT3 Verse Universe Tudors AU Fic)
Works: On AO3 here (WIP)
Tags on my tumblr: au: crown of ashes
Summary: It is everything Mary has ever wanted - a good Catholic husband, the crown upon her head, retribution upon those who had wronged her (not that she was giving in to so base a notion as vengeance, merely that the Lord had seen the righteousness of her cause and she was glad of it), the stamping out of heresy in England. No, all is well. All is very well.
Crown of Ashes is very inspired by the Taylor Swift Song Castle Crumbling. It’s a ‘what if Mary Tudor made similar choices to her father’ for better (and worse and maybe in between) reasons to her. What if everything the world tells you you should believe and want is wrong actually - what if you get everything you thought you wanted and it sucks.

hiiii! for the fanfic writer ask game...
💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?
🐇 Do you write for yourself, for others, or both?
🥳 Why did you start writing fanfic?
🦋 Which character is your favorite to write?
🦈 Which character is the toughest to write?
💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written? So I’ve said my favourite one (Such A Time As This - the Jewish Anne Boleyn AU) a lot but two other favourites that are recent: The Narnia Horse And His Boy Retelling and Karma (is my family) which is the Grishaverse Inej Gets Revenge On Tante Heleen fic of my heart.
🐇 Do you write for yourself, for others, or both? Honestly it is both - like I am never going to say I am entitled to comments or readers or anything like that and in the end the way I wrangle my brain I need to write my little AUs for myself but also honestly Validation Is So Wonderful And I Save Especially Nice Comments and being able to talk about ideas with friends/getting feedback is really what sparks more of them (I’m actually writing TWW fic again because of this)
🥳 Why did you start writing fanfic? Enjoyed imagining missing scenes and different outcomes and stuff for the media I loved even before I knew what fic was and it just kind of went from there. It’s something I’ve always done, just telling myself stories (often crossing over fandoms - again before I knew what that was) and then I found out other people did that and :D
🦋 Which character is your favorite to write? Listen I’ve had so much fun writing my fictional fandom members with you lately ;). Also Abby Bartlet is SO MUCH FUN. Like, I love her confidence so much and also her stabby.
🦈 Which character is the toughest to write? Hilariously it’s actually the characters most like me that I find the most difficult, which I don’t know how that works either (something to do with my self worth/sense of self?) So it took me until now to actually do a self insert character into my stories (it’s Pippa in the OT3 verse) and I don’t like, write much about Cinderella or say, I have a Persian Jewish Sara Crewe (from A Little Princess) idea and I hesitate on writing it a lot. Also my writing method is really ‘listen I get a whole series of clips in my brain’ (like episodes from a show)/the characters internal monologue as a voiceover so it’s not really me so much as me kind of translating it to words (if that makes any sense?)

ask meme! can I...can I ask you all of them? (the one you made up with like five or so questions with emojis I mean) :D :D :D
🎬 which fic would you want to see made into a movie or tv show? (Assuming obviously this can happen) Go into details about why and what you’d want it to look like!
This actually has two different answers depending on the medium but I’m going to go with the mini series of Such A Time As This aka Jewish Anne Boleyn. I don’t know who I would cast (if anyone knows any Persian Jewish actors for Anne I would love to know so then I can make some specific self indulgent graphics) but I do know how I would structure it (eight-ten episodes). And that it would be released over Purim.
The creative team (writers, producers, costumers) is entirely Jewish/Mizrahi Jewish.
(Listen if I could age some actors back and you know do it, I would love to see the OT3 verse on screen though).
🎧 your favourite singer/band is going to write an album about a fic of yours - which fic and what would the album be like?
I mean Taylor Swift has already contributed so much to the Tudors Fandom I would love to see a Taylor Swift album specifically focused on the Tudors OT3 Verse. Like yes please where is my themed album it would be a banger. (Specifically about the OT3). I would also accept an album about the OT3 verse in general/some of the couples specifically composed by some of my favourite artists (Beyonce, Taylor, Olivia, Maisie, Maureen Nehedar).
🎨 what scenes from your fic(s) do you really really want fanart of?
Anything from Such A Time As This but specifically:
Anne in Persian Jewish dress, praying and echoing Esther.
Thomas Cromwell (in this fic he’s half Jewish) also praying
OT3 Verse (PLEASE)
Anne, Henry and Thomas all in bed together
Anne and her husbands with their children
Their wedding
There’s a specific moment involving Norwich that’s a spoiler but uh, THAT.
The one’s below
Mihrimah and Thomas’ wedding

📓 list your current WIPs
Grishaverse Hunger Games (currently working on individual chapters for each character and trying to avoid picking a district for them except I know Nikolai :cough: Sturmhond is District 4)
Horse And His Boy Fix It (I have nothing at the moment but it’s something I would like to do)
Crown Of Ashes (It’s just all Norwich being The Worst and also Patrick Gibson is really good at acting/looking sad but brave and good)
Rewrite The Stars 2.0 (Trying not to listen to the brain weasels that say that no one cares about your stupid little niche AU ship dot gif)
Sam/Donna/Josh President Seaborn modern AU. I did have a line come into my brain. “They got married. Technically you could say it was illegal but no one paid attention to that in favour of gushing over the fashion”
TWW Hunger Games (Am I going to write more of this? I mean I don’t think so but if I did there are some ideas)
Tortall Found Family (I can be a better boyfriend than him and Jon of Conte is CORRECT).
CJ was kidnapped not Zoey AU (maybe maybe because @miabicicletta is an enabler I’ll write some of the background if it comes to me)
