So there's the
Fandom I wrote longfic for for a couple of years and never quite finished the fic, where I'm trying to catch up on others' writing but always seem to run out of time to do so, and I keep trying to corner my brain into wanting to finish the longfic or at least write more for it...
Long term comfort fandom with many friends who I've been writing for again recently but I'm in a bit of a rut with and probably need a break from writing but first I've got to tidy up and post the writing I did do to ao3 (consistent archiving is important!!)
Fandom of a friend for a show I've watched repeatedly and love but I'm sneaking round the edge of the fandom because ohhh I already can't keep up with my to read list
THEE og fandom. the one where I learned what fandom was when I first joined the internet. Do I want to re-read the old novels from it that I loved? Do I want to rewatch the show that I'm currently bashing my brain against idly? Do I want to watch the other new shows to see how they fit together (I know they won't I know it'll annoy me...but what about the bits where it doesn't annoy me what about that hm?)? Do I just want to watch the good films again? Nah I kind of just want to write dead-end smut and angst for a dead-end rarepair but I keep getting drawn into Plot because it's just that kind of universe...
Anyway that graphic that's like...the quadrants of 'objectively good <--> objectively bad'/'enjoyable <--> not at all enjoyable' and they're all Star Wars? I'm really feeling that rn. Sigh.

I don't really think humping in their jeans would let them feel any less awkward afterwards than their actual first time in the film but at least they'd be more comfortable on the bed

Mum walked in scratching and yawning, wearing an old bathrobe over flannel pyjamas and with her hair disheveled.
‘Ah, the dead have risen,’ Grandma sighed. ‘You’re never up this early.’
‘I am now. I woke from the cold. The heating is off. Is there any coffee going?’
‘No. For your information, the electricity was cut off...Again.’
Grandma, a little more visible now in the growing daylight, raised her hands like a priest dispensing a blessing.
‘You should marry your Mr. Lasha, Teona. He’s rich. You’re his cleaning lady, but you like him and he likes you. Have him marry you, then you and I can both finally rest.’
‘I won’t, Mother.’
‘Why not?’
‘His wife wouldn’t like it for one thing.’
‘Ay, ay, ay, what years we’ve lived.’

The Scotsman carefully dissected the construction with his spoon, took a bite and then spat it out.
‘What’s this?’ he roared. ‘You call this cottage pie?’
‘Quite an audacious remark for someone whose home town is famous for its deep-fried Mars bars,’ Ninutsa scoffed.
The other students giggled. ‘Quiet!’ Aleko snapped in Georgian.
The blond man was alternately gagging and drinking water.
‘This was frozen an then reheated, right?’ he asked David. ‘It’s definitely not fresh. It’s hard as a rock.’
‘My father owns a construction company,’ Sopo said calmly. ‘It was the easiest thing for me to scoop up some debris from a demolition site…There’s real cottage in that cottage pie, sir, so it’s as authentic as anything.’

Irakli went to the counter and drafted a glass. The pompons of his mariachi hat were dangling in front of his glasses, blocking his view and thus causing him to spill beer onto the floor.
Merab walked past, nearly slipped in the puddle but managed to come to a screeching halt on the heels of his cowboy boots. He smiled and mopped up the mess. ‘Love,’ Irakli whispered, feeling his heart contract at the sight of the beautiful creature who looked so angelic in his embroidered Mexican jacket. Then he took the beer to Ioseb’s table.
‘Have you chosen a dish yet?’ he asked.
Merab’s father nodded, smiling now. ‘Yes. I’d like a Sloppy Ioseb sandwich. Sounds good to me.’
‘Oh yes!’ Irakli confirmed. ‘Sopo created it in your honour.’
‘My future daughter-in-law is a lovely lass,’ Ioseb said. ‘And I am glad that Merab is finally doing something useful with his life under your influence.’
Irakli cast a glance at Merab, who was now clumsily drafting beer and singing Pistolero to amuse the guests at the counter.
‘Useful?’ Irakli said to Joseb. ‘Well, I’m trying my best, and…’
Joseb pointed at the menu. ‘And oh yes, I’d like some Mexikhinkali and eggplant fritters for a main course…Thanks, son.’

David wound his way through throngs of people down a lane at the Eliava Bazaar until he got to his father’s car part stall.
‘Morning, son,’ Ioseb greeted him. ‘Do sit down. Could you spare your old man a fag? Business has been bad lately.’
David offered him a cigarette, lit up one himself and settled on a crate.
‘What brings you here at such an early hour?’ Dad then asked. ‘Some beef with your girl?’
David shook his head. No, there’s no beef between Sopo and me, he thought, if only it were so because it would mean we were living together at our little flat undisturbed. Everything I wanted from watching football on TV to inviting my mates over for drinks and making love to her has been impossible ever since Aleko moved in, but I won’t tell Dad any of this.
‘It’s something else then,’ Dad tried. ‘Money trouble?’
‘No.’ In fact, he and Sopo were making loads and had no time to spend it.
Now Dad smiled. ‘Ah! So you’ve done what any man should do before he turns twenty-five…By the way, Sopo is older than you, it’s ridiculous…Anyhow, did it finally happen?’
‘I don’t understand, Dad.’
‘Did she have a visit from the Holy Spirit?’
‘What?’
‘She in the family way?’
‘What?’
Dad angrily stubbed out his cigarette. ‘You dumb calf…Did you get her pregnant?’
David felt anger surge within him. He and Sopo had decided not to start a family until she had earned her PhD, which would be some three years down the road.
‘No, nothing of that kind,’ he sighed. ‘I’m just tired. Our tenant is a nuisance.’

And Then We Danced
I have seen many films in my life, but this gem by Levan Akin (2019) stands out. It depicts the struggles of a young Georgian dancer to come to terms with his deeper feelings in a society that dismisses homosexuality as something sinful.
The main characters, Merab (Levan Gelbakhiani) and Irakli (Bachi Valishvili) are played by two handsome, young Georgians who deserve all the credit for doing an outstanding job.
ATWD shows a mesmerizing blend of tradition (Georgian dance, everyday life in Tbilisi, family matters) and individualism (as Merab auditions for the Main Ensemble, he shows a unique routine that defines him as someone who has risen above the mainstream).
The ending is both sad and reviving. Merab and his secret love Irakli will not end up a couple, but Merab has come to terms with the feelings he has kept hidden for so long.
Feeling saddened at the lack of a happy ending for Merab and Irakli I was inspired to write fanfics, which can be found on Archive of Our Own. My stories show Merab and Irakli as two men in love who get into all kinds of funny, crazy and absurdist situations. The events described are either comical, sweet or both.
It is not my intention to mock Akin’s masterpiece by re-creating the characters as comical figures. My stories should be read as a form of credit from a Dutch ATWD fan to a screen tale that was long overdue given the sufferings of LGBTQ people in Georgia.

Me reading some ATWD fanfic set in the room of Irakli’s Granny: *evil thoughts*
Also me: Oh, calm down, it’s just somebody’s else’s fantasy! Don’t treat that like some „who makes it better” competition, you’re not a writer!
Me again: *writing a fic anyway*
Okey, don't get me wrong: reading other fanfics I may grind my teeth numerous times thinking how „unbelievable” or „wrong” or „misunderstood” some things are - BUT I do know it still is the most valid fanfic! And I’d rather fight for your right to write whatever you please than say anything against it. Because the only rule of any fanfic or fanart is: „perfectly fine as long as it brings you pleasure”.
Above everything else I can’t blame people for the want to make their favorite characters talk about their feelings. I feel you there, I understand you and I also do wish all the people in the world learned to always speak freely and honestly about what they feel.
Only NOT Merab and Irakli and NOT in this point of the story!😆
As two typical young Georgians they never learned to speak about their feelings. They don’t even know the right words. And those very few words they do know all sound inadequate or offending for that indescribably beautiful thing that they are experiencing.
And so they are left there with the only language they do know and use: rules of courtesy, rules of rivalry and silly teasing each other. There's only few types of movement accepted for two men: either of a dance or a fight. And it's all covered with the sauce of deeply internalised fear: „what will people say?”
But it all makes my heart melt even more because they somehow manage to be together! Love will find a way. Avoiding words of hate and insults - they still find their own non-verbal way of communicating. No matter how much they've been taught to compete, the more they've been trained all their lives for male cockfighting, the more equally they treat each other when they're alone. The most equal lovers, to the point that even when they finally make love - they are sides!❤❤ And the more is left unspoken, unnamed and undefined between them - the more organic and beautiful it feels...
So, I don’t know, I finnaly got to write it down like there’s no other option🤷
But don’t worry, in the end I still leave them there in each other arms for you🫂 Can’t tell for sure if there i any real „tension” because I’m ace, but it feels kind of awkward so I guess it’s there... With „I wanted you so much I almost beat you” kind of energy from the „behind the kvevri” scene. And with the door closed and the bed right next to them.
Dinner is served, bon apetit!😋
Ps. When I mention "cockfighting" I refer to one of these pictures from my #bird version ATWD series and as to the kitten trying to look bigger - I meant this.
