the yosuke problem
ok the thing that pisses me off most about the yosuke storyline is not that the homophobia is like bad and morally wrong or whatever. BUT THAT IT MAKES HIS CHARACTER WORSE.
in canon, he's homophobic cause he's an asshole. full stop. i guess the "best friend" character is just an asshole now and you like him less. LAME.
give him a romance route and his character becomes so much more layered. he's lashing out at kanji because he's scared of himself and his own feelings.
when he confesses to you, he's also confessing to himself, accepting a piece of his identity he doesn't want to. you know, the theme of the game? accepting uncomfortable truths about yourself and finding joy through it? it also shows that self-acceptance isn't a one day thing, we don't have just one shadow, but multiple different demons that we have to conquer throughout our lives. ah, depth and thematic coherence, how homosexual thou art!
its straight up more interesting storytelling, it's efficient, meaningful and its not in the game because ATLUS ARE TOO COWARDLY TO MAKE GOOD STORIES >:((((((

Okay. Yeah. Got to Naoto's part and there's no fucking way they're a ciswoman.
Don't get me wrong: I do understand disguising oneself to avoid misogyny. AFAB people have it rough, and there are plenty of crossdressing icons out there. However, do you want to know how many non-trans people I know whose wish to avoid misogyny went as far as wanting actual surgery? None. Zero. That entire dungeon screamed "gender reassignment surgery allegory." Incredibly transphobic allegory, but still!
Also, Naoto's discomfort with the beauty pageant, his refusal to wear the swimsuit, and her reaction to being pulled into the baths with the girls...all of those things spoke to me as an AFAB nonbinary person.
However, I do also like the idea of Naoto becoming more comfortable with their feminine side, because it is something she felt the need to suppress for a long time. What I'm saying is that I'm going to be writing Naoto as genderfluid when I start doing fanfics on this game!
I also want to say that Kanji is not straight. At all. Even IF I bought Naoto being a totally cisgender woman, the fact still remains that Kanji was attracted to someone he thought was a boy, who presented as a boy, and who everyone else thought was a boy. That whole "Oh, he somehow knew on a deeper level," is bullshit. It don't work like that, folks.
Kanji is pan. Naoto is genderfluid. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I keep thinking about this particular part of her false awakening where she looks down at her hands in what looks like shock/fear and it keeps going back to my previous thoughts about how her red gloves can be symbolic of her unconsciously thinking she has her twin sister's blood on her hands...
Adding to that is a shot of a close up of her gaining the gloves during the magical girl sequence.
Like she's still running from the truth and problem by unknowingly (but then knowingly in 3rd Semester) continuing to live a lie. But her true cognition and inner rebel I guess said, "nope." Can definitely add more to Cendrillon's behavior too!
Just- Urgh the brainrot is back because she's so tragic and fucked up and I loved it!

Anyway, I've been thinking about an Ann x Ryuji potential Showtime for... hours now. It happens when Joker is in mortal danger and they step in as the first two people who believed in him to save him.
I haven't figured it out fully yet, but they both use their Personas and guns in some way. Ann traps the enemy with her whip while saying the good ol' 'Squeal like a pig', makes them spin and fall down. They look up to see that they're struck by a lightning bolt and while they're being zapped/shocked, they're set on fire by Carmen/Hecate.
The final act is Ryuji shoving and hoisting a flag with the PT logo inside their body, Ann standing next to him with a peace sign while he's saying 'Sayonara!' and she's saying 'Bye-bye!' in English at the same time.

They should’ve made more parallels be drawn between chidori and mitsuru simply bc visually they’re the only ones similar to each other and it would’ve been interesting to see where they were the same and different. I wish this would’ve happened in the main plot and also hope something like this happens in portable if chidori lives bc if I’m not mistaken she doesn’t exactly “join” the party but she is around more so it could’ve been cool to explore her dynamic with SEEs and mitsuru and chidori to both have a female friend to lean on
