Genuinely I think if Mako hadn’t died, Zuko would have joined team avatar with Iroh. They just didn’t have a good voice for Iroh anymore, so they had to do rewrites last minute. Tin foil hat is ON. This is my conspiracy theory.

I think my favourite thing from the new avatar show so far is that they make it unavoidably clear that Iroh is a war criminal. Yes, he was brought up to believe in the propaganda he supported and fought for, he’s suffered great personal loss, has learned from that and he’s a changed man, but he was once the scariest person in the world. A butcher, as one character says.
Whoever wrote that looked at all the Iroh worship that the comics and other material from the animated show gave us over the last few years and took personal issue with that and I love them for it.
Someone saw Azula and especially Ozai get billed as just evil from birth while the rest of the family never did anything bad ever and decided to address that by expanding on everyone’s experiences.
So, say what you will about the show, but shoutout to whoever it was that decided to remind everyone that Iroh is a beloved character because of his complexity and past flaws, and just how severe those past flaws are.

context: I’m rewatching atla
I've never noticed Azula's face here before, and I'm definitely not sure how I feel about it.

Rewatching Avatar:
Tumblr media
So, we're all agreed that in S3E6, The Avatar and the Fire Lord, that when Iroh sent this scroll to Zuko, he chose the secret writing on it to be one that's revealed by fire because he assumed Zuko would throw a trademark Zuko tantrum and try to burn the scroll?
I'm just imagining him giving instructions for the scroll. "No, make it fireproof. And the secret message should be revealed by fire. Trust me. I know my nephew."

Y'all getting mad an Asian actor didn't want to put on a fake Asian accent cause he doesn't actually have one and feels comfortable using his own voice and not having to fall into a stereotype anymore cause we have grown from that as a society: IROH ISNT THE SAME WITHOUT THE VOICE 😡😡😡😡😡😡

Also top 5 characters in ATLA:
1. Sokka- man was a warrior through and through. Comedic relief. Best brother and friend in the show. Always trying to keep the peace.
2. Toph- stays ready so she ain’t gotta get ready. Invented a completely new way to earth bend. She is always solid when the rest of the group gets shakey. Also a soft girl at heart.
3. Uncle Iroh- genius. Wise old man that is trying to help the next generation live a life of peace. Kicks ass and drinks tea. Love him so much.
4. Aang- he’s just a baby that’s having to fight a war he never wanted to be a part of. Goes crazy for his friends and is so freakin wise to be just a kid.
5. Zuko- the character development that he went through was one of the best in tv history. It wasn’t a linear growth. He continued to fuck up but ultimately followed his own heart and it paid off.

Iroh trying to tell Zuko stealing from the poor is not the answer, and capturing the avatar might not be the answer, but not to give up hope, that he is strong, and capable of being his own man… god the writing in this show can be so damn great.

the winter solstice episode of atla is crazy. aang rocks up to the fire temple and he's like heyyy roku i'm twelve and need help! i don't know how to learn all the elements and the spirit world is a mystery to me etc. and roku goes yeah fine shut up. if you don't figure all that out by the summer the world will LITERALLY EXPLODE. obviously aang is like dude no way what if i can't do this and roku's response is yeah you can :) ok the glowy light is going away i have to jet bye <3 dude WHAT that was the least helpful you possibly could have been to that child. nice job elevating the stakes of the show and providing narrative tension but god you could have tried to be nicer to the baby standing in front of you asking for help

The Warriors of Kyoshi
I'm on a rewatch of ATLA and I can't help but wonder why people are so insistent that Katara was being jealous this episode.
She voiced her reservations about staying too long before Aang started to show off in front of the girls of the village. And she expressed that she didn't want his newfound fame going to his head, which does end up happening. And then she says that she doesn't want to watch Aang show off. In fact, she was only annoyed with Aang in the first place because instead of helping her with the supplies she had picked up for them, he decided to show off even more.
The entire episode, she was only frustrated with Aang's immaturity. That's it.
To claim that she had romantic feelings for him as early as the fourth episode is weird. Especially since she would have been "jealous" of like 8-11 year olds

i feel like we all talk about crossroads of destiny, day of black sun, and zuko alone as pivotal moments for zukos development, but can we get some commotion for the seige of the north??!!? seeing zuko so desperate to capture aang to the point he almost dies because of his determination, and the fact that we are rooting for him as he infiltrates the northern water tribe despite him being the villain. his monologue about azula and him trying to justify his fathers actions to himself and an unconscious aang. its so good, its the culmination of this tension about his character throughout the whole season and its a heavy precursor to his turning point at the beginning of book 2.
