Followed the footsteps. A small painting about one of the events in Atelier Totori rpg. These series of games are underrated but also underdeveloped, made on small budget. And yet they feature unique crafting systems, timed events and multiple endings.

Weirdest Start of my life
I heard of the Atelier Series back in about 2011-2012 (Around the time Totori was new) through a facebook meme page ran by a huge JRPG fan. I didnt pay too much attention to it at first because I used to be a broke kid and all I had was a GBA and a Gamecube, I didnt know the series had a long way from 1997, starting with Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg. The series consists of self contained trilogies or sagas of sorts like Salburg, Iris, Mana Khemia, Arland, Mysterious and Secret, whether you start from the very first or even newer entries like Ryza, it’s always ok.
The Arland Trilogy however proved to me a very weird start for me. I played my share of JRPGs in the past but nothing like the Atelier Series, having to collect items to create better ones? I did try of crafting mechanisms but this one got me confused at first. Worst of all last year I decided to start with Totori of all things, not the best place to start I know. After I got the bad ending I tried Rorona, having to scramble around objectives on a deadline was chaos but I managed a normal ending (High score on final assignment but popularity below 30%).
Fast forward a year later I played through Rorona again knowing full well what I’m doing all things considered. I beat Rorona with the true ending, and did give Totori a second go again, this time I succeeded but not quite as I needed to complete a certain objective but I managed a normal ending so it wasnt as sour as my first time. With Meruru I got a normal ending as well, but I had fun playing it as well.
The problem with this trilogy is the constant deadlines you have to meet and the quests that pile up on you, most adviceable to try and make the best equipment so your start wont feel as rough. Rorona and Meruru start off strong, but Totori is very useless at the start so you have to get other party members fight for her in the beginning of the game until you get her better equipment.
Overall once you get the hang of it you feel like you can do everything! DX versions are the best to play now, available on PC, Switch and PS4.

Atelier Totori OST 111 - A Storekeeper in a Small Village
This song is my heart. I've started playing this game 9 years ago as my first wait- my second Atelier Game. Well, my first Adventurer of Arland saga. I started picking this one up at my local retro game store in Pre-owned at the time. Speaking my first, it was Mana Khemia. Now I have an idea what OST to listen tonight, during my slumber.

November 12th, 2023 - Atelier Totori
I was looking forward to seeing what this one was like but it didn't end up being as enjoyable as I was hoping for. Being one of the most frustrating makes this one of my least favorites so far. Like the previous game, there's a time limit, but instead of having several different goals to work towards you have to raise your adventurer rank by the end of the third year or your license gets revoked. Make it and you get an extension. However, after the extension you need to rank up at least once to keep your license permanently but the game itself still has a time limit.
The goal isn't just to keep your rank up, but after the extension you get the option to try to search for Totori's missing mother. If you don't accomplish that, you don't get the best ending. It's not exactly easy to get the right materials the further in the game you go and upgrading gear has been the most difficult it has ever been in any of these games for me. Request deadlines are strict too. I've had so many of them cancel just because I couldn't get back in time because I had so much other shit to do.
Speaking of shit to do, there is a list to look at but for the most part, I was just running around until shit happened because a lot of these tasks are a pain. I'm grateful you no longer have to pay allies but it's easy to fall behind when it comes to each character's level. Map structure was a bit different from Rorona and more like future games. However, random encounters on the map were pretty annoying. Since upgrades are such a pain in the ass, when I failed the first deadline I didn't have that great of gear to redo the game with or that much money, so having a cleared game wasn't THAT much help.
To make things worse, you have to stress over another goal after the extension. It's not easy finding the right materials and heck, the synthesis, UI, and EVERYTHING feels so dated compared to other games, even Rorona, which was from earlier. I understand that Rororna DX already had an updated version and that's why, but it's still kinda dumb. Totori would have benefited from several quality of life improvements added to Rorona and later, Meruru. It doesn't really make sense why they're not here.
Anyways, I didn't manage to complete the second goal which is a requirement for a "real ending". I was always running around trying to level up, unable to upgrade my gear very much, earning very little money, and struggling to find materials, things that I don't struggle with anywhere near as hard in other games. I gotta say, I am very disappointed in this one. Atelier Totori is one of the most annoying games in the series, held back by lack of quality of life improvements from later games and deadlines that are way too strict. I didn't get the good end I was supposed to, but I've put up with as much as I'm willing to for now.
