Papas self-harm comfort mini drabbles

TW: self-harm. blood. young Nihil's isn't exactly a good solution.

Primo

"Shh... Shh... It's alright, amore..." Primo held you tightly, letting you cry into his shoulder. He didn't care about getting dirty, he's seen blood before. He cared about you, though. "I'm here now. Let's take care of this, hm? I'm here, you're safe now."

He slowly guided you outside of the bathroom, where you've locked yourself earlier, and sat you on the edge of the bed as he got the first aid kit. He kept whispering hushed words of reassurance and small praises as he wrapped your wounds up. He gave small kisses to your hands, not caring that his own fingers were now stained with blood. He cared about you, not his fingers getting dirty.

"I'm here. I know you may not want to talk about it, especially now, but I'm here. If you ever decide to tell me, I'll listen." He promised, kissing your forehead. "I love you, okay? Please remember that. I know how difficult it can be to fight a battle with yourself. But you're not alone anymore, darling. No matter how your brain might be trying to trap you into thinking otherwise... I'll always be with you."

He held you tightly in his arms as you clinged to him, crying and apologizing over and over. You tried, you tried so hard, but you gave in and you were convinced he would be disappointed. But he wasn't. He could never be.

"I love you with all my heart, amore. Nothing can change that. I love you with all your strengths and weaknesses. You have my word." He whispered, holding you against him for as long as needed. He would always be here for you, no matter what.

Secondo

His first instinct is to literally rip the blade out of your hands and throw it in the corner as he presses you against his chest. He knows you're crying for more than one reason now, he knows he scared you. But at least you were safe. Your safety was his top priority.

"Let's take care of this first, alright?" He sighed softly, giving you one last comforting squeeze and a kiss on the top of your head. He adored you so much, he would do anything to help you. No matter what you did, he wanted to be there for you. "We're gonna patch you up, amore."

Takes you back to the bedroom and puts a large towel on the bed so you can sit down comfortably on clean sheets later. He's silent as he takes care of your wounds, kissing your hand when he finished. He was a gentleman, even in a situation like this.

"Would you like to talk about it?" He asked quietly as he kept holding your hand, stroking your knuckles with his thumb. He listened carefully to your weeping, holding you close to him. He was an old, grumpy man at this point, but he did his best to understand. And even if he didn't, he supported you.

He's a bitter and mean man, but he always cared about the people close to him. He had a hard time showing it sometimes, yes. But he would destroy the world just to see you smile. He'd raise Hell for you, if that meant an end to your tears. He'd do absolutely everything for you, he loved you with all his old, grumpy heart.

Terzo

"Come on now, amore. Give Papa the blade, okay?" He asked softly, extending his hand to you, trying to remain calm. He had a small, desperate smile on his face, hoping to get you to listen. You couldn't see it through your tears, but a few tears of his own threatened to escape his eyes. "Come on. You give me the blade and I'll give you a big hug? Hm? Sounds good?"

He walked over to you very slowly, gently taking the blade away. He didn't care about the blade, though, he cared about you, which was why he dropped the object and pulled you safely into his arms, squeezing you as hard as he could. There was a big chance he'd leave you bruised because of this, but it didn't matter. Your safety mattered the most to him right now.

For once, he didn't know what to say. He was shaking, petrified, powerless as he saw you cry at the self-inflicted injuries. He feels guilty for letting it happen. Did he miss a sign? Did he not realize you were asking for help?

He would focus on trying to find his errors, his mistakes... He'd focus on it so much he barely heard you quietly calling out his name with a tiny, whispered apology.

"Amore... Il mio tesoro più prezioso..." He kissed the top of your head. "You have nothing to apologize for... I should've been more observant, sí? I'm the one who should be sorry, I promise, I'll take better care of you..." He spoke to you in a quiet, soothing tone. "Let's take care care of these terrible wounds now, alright? And then we'll cuddle and get ice cream, sounds nice?"

Ever since that evening, Terzo has been even more affectionate and attentive. He would rather die than let you get hurt again.

"Amore...?" You could literally hear his heart breaking when he called out to you quietly. You wanted to cry even more now, not only because of everything that already happened, not because of your own pain... But because you made him upset. Because you heard him sniffle as he took a few unsteady steps towards you. "Please... Let's not do that anymore, okay?"

He knelt down next to you, taking the blade put of your hands, his own shaking as he panicked. He was terrified of what was happening. Of what happened to make you do something like this. Of his own ignorance, obliviousness, stupidity... Whatever it was that prevented him from reacting sooner.

You both wept as he held you in his arms, promising how it's gonna be okay soon. How he loves you and he'll take care of you. How he'll never let it happen again. And you just nodded, whimpering out apologies after apologies despite how much he assured you that you didn't do anything wrong. Because you didn't. It wasn't your fault. Something drove you go it. And he wanted to protect you, he really did.

"I love you, please remember that. I'll never leave you, okay?" He assured, gently holding your face in his hands and covering it with little kisses. "If you ever feel like this again, come to me first, I'll take care of you, I promise. I'll be there for you. I'll make sure you never have to do this again..."

And you nodded, letting his arms, kisses and words soothe you.

Old Nihil

He's an old man going senile. His world with you has always been perfect in his eyes. So perhaps that was why he was so shocked when the reality of it all hit him. Because his perfect world crashed. But this isn't about him... This is about you. Sweet, precious you... How long have you been hurting like this? How long did he remain oblivious to your pain and misery?

He slowly walked over to you and knelt down, gently holding your crying face in his hands and just looking into your eyes for a while before he gave you a short, sweet kiss.

"I'm sorry. I'll do better from now on." He promised in a whisper as he used his robe to gently wipe your tears away. "Now, let's get up and clean this mess, okay?"

He gave you, a smile in hopes it would make you feel better as he clumsily took care of your wounds. It took a bit, since his hands were shaking, but he did his best. And he kept telling you silly things to cheer you up, at least a little bit.

*I'm gonna do the paperwork tomorrow, come on, come to Papa, we're gonna cuddle and watch movies."

He didn't let go for the rest of the night. He wanted you close, he needed you close. He just couldn't wrap his head around why someone as amazing as you would harm yourself.

From that evening, he would make sure to always have some time for you everyday. To remind you how much he adres you.

He just wishes you could see yourself in the wonderful colors he sees you in.

Young Nihil

"What the fuck are you doing?!"

You flinched hearing him raise his voice as he ran over to you. Nihil ripped the blade our of your hands and pulled you close. You could feel his heart hammering in his chest, as if he was running a marathon. You didn't realize it yet, but he wasn't yelling because he was mad. He was yelling because he was scared. The love of his life was kneeling on the floor and bleeding! How was he not supposed to freak out?!

"Listen to me now, okay? You... You don't fucking do that..." He breathed out, pressing you against his chest like you'd disappear of he were to ever let go. "You don't..."

He easily picked you up and carried you to bed, still breathing heavily, even though he carried you multiple times before. He wasn't tired. He was scared. He was scared of losing you. He would rather die than let you get hurt.

He hated that he was powerless in this situation. He wanted to do something, anything to help you. But he was just an old (even if he always insisted that being in his fifties didn't make him that old) bastard who couldn't even handle his own emotions most of the time.

But here he was, craddling you in bed and hoping to soothe you somehow. To un-break your heart. If only he could do something, if only he could...

"Next time, hit me instead, got it? If one of us is gonna get hurt, it better be me."

It was a terrible, unhealthy idea, yes. But he was desperate and had no time to figure anything else out. He'll find a better solution soon, he promises. But for now... For now this will have to do. For now this was the only way he could think of that could somehow transfer your pain onto him. And he wanted to take it all if it meant he'd get to see you smile.

Day 24: Plagued by the horrors

Rated Teen, Venli/Radiant, RoW spoilers Cross posted on ao3

Shallan woke to a scream that quickly cut off. Groggily, she wondered if Jushu had found a cremling in his bed again.

A feminine voice whispered in a musical foreign language, her voice strained by some tense emotion.

The sound brought Shallan to instant, painful wakefulness.

She sat up, and the world spun. She tried to swallow, but her throat was dry. Her tongue was stuck to the top of her mouth. Shallan tried to look at who was beside her, but the morning light shining into her room stabbed her eyes like daggers. She covered her face, trying to solve the mystery by recollecting her memories. Just by the hangover, she already knew this was Veil’s fault.

The form beside her stilled in a way that reminded Shallan of fear. She peeked through her fingers to find a singer woman naked in bed with her, her red eyes open wide and the covers pulled up to her chest. Storms, was she a Fused? She was gigantic, tall and slender, with delicate plates of violet carapace strategically placed over her body. Her skin had white and red marbling, with a sliver of black peeking around the side of her neck. Her hair was a mess.

What did you get us into, Veil? Thanks for the horrific hangover, by the way. You couldn’t have burned any of it off?

Veil emerged slowly, sharing Shallan's hangover. I don’t know! Are we in your room? she asked. Last I remember we were at the winehouse…

Her brain worked as slowly as a chull, but soon a vague memory emerged. It was Shallan’s rest night, so Veil had gone to Jez’s duty to win some spheres. She’d been pulled away by Adolin, who had asked for her help to…host?...an envoy of some sort?

“Come on, Veil, you can drink the most expensive wine in the house,” Adolin had said with an air of desperation.

She remembered…a much nicer winehouse. She’d definitely had at least a bottle and a half of the nicest stuff. She’d been introduced to…what was her name? Voice? That couldn’t be right…they had not gotten along at all. Veil had managed to piss her off, and…

“Who are you?” the Voice said in Alethi. “Are you a mavset-im? Who was that just now?”

“We…I mean, I’m a Lightweaver,” Veil said, squinting against the light. “Uh, don’t worry about it. Do you remember me?”

The listener woman nodded, then made a musical growl as she held her head. “You got into a fight with me about the reliability of oral traditions. I…may have had a bit to drink by then. But then you left and another woman showed up. She was strikingly colourful, I mean, for a human. She said she’d take me somewhere more private…and then…”

Voice’s words trailed off into worried humming, and she stared off into space.

“Do you know where she is?” Voice asked quietly. "She had yellow hair."

Uh, Radiant? Veil said inwardly with a growing grin. Did you get us into this mess? Please don’t leave me alone with your new girlfriend. I’ll probably ruin your courtship. Storms, what a choice…the most opinionated person I've ever met.

Radiant groaned internally. I…may not have made the most honourable choices last night…

Well get back on Honor’s path, Radiant! We need to get our story straight before Adolin finds out what happened.

Radiant wanted to argue with that, but found she didn’t have the energy. Besides, this was her mistake and her responsibility. She took over, and took no small joy in seeing the way Venli’s humming changed when she saw her.

“Thank the Rider of the Storms!” Venli said. “I may have gotten way too drunk, but I didn’t think I’d gotten that drunk.”

Hey! Veil and Shallan thought in simultaneous offense.

Radiant shushed them, then turned her focus to Venli. “I do apologize for how you woke up today,” she said sincerely. “I invited you back to my rooms so that the other people would stop staring. And so you could have a seat that wasn’t entirely too small. I didn’t mean for…”

Memories of movements and sensations rose to her mind. The pleasant hum of their conversation. Radiant moving closer so she could feel the Rhythms Venli was making. Venli’s smile as she leaned down to indulge Radiant in an experimental kiss.

The way she tasted…the way their bodies seemed to fit together…the smell of her skin, like warm earth after a rain…

Radiant coughed nervously. “Well, I mean I enjoyed what we did. I just didn’t mean to dishonour you. I don’t know how coupling works among listeners. I hope I didn’t overstep or hurt you in any way.”

The listener’s posture relaxed. “According to Abronai, mates are decided by mutual agreement, so we wouldn’t be mates or even once-mates unless we both agreed. I’m sure Eshonai would have decreed us once-mates though.” She rested her chin on her fist, looking away into the distance with a mournful rhythm.

Radiant waited, anxious but also wanting to give her enough time to think.

Eventually, Venli looked over, tilting her head a little, and hummed curiously. “I like you,” she said, and gave her a feral grin. “Even if you are human.”

Radiant’s heart fluttered. A little blue leaf flew up beside her, and she smiled.

“Rlain is going to blow a storm over me about this, but I think it’ll be worth it, if you want to try.” Venli took Radiant’s hand and turned it over, inspecting it. “You remind me a little of Leshwi, and a little of Eshonai. You’re honourable. I need someone like that in my life, besides Timbre. But something else I like about you? You’re not against breaking the rules from time to time. I need that too. Someone with balance. And...and I have to admit, kissing you feels really meaningful in envoyform. Like you're speaking to me with emotions. It feels amazing...to be wanted.”

Radiant had never been described that way before, and she thought it sounded nice. She’d been accused of being too much of a stick-in-the-crem. Maybe Venli brought out a new side of her. Venli wasn’t perfect, but it didn't bother Radiant as much as it usually did. It made her feel like it might be okay if she wasn’t the most perfect radiant. Getting drunk on the job was only the beginning.

It was a little scary, and more exciting. She grasped Venli’s hand and tried to match the tone of her humming. “I like you too. You have strong opinions and you don’t care who knows it. You’re not afraid to take up space. You make me feel…more real.”

She reached inside. Is this okay?

We’ll have to talk things over with Adolin, but you’re your own person, Radiant. This could be good for you.

Kiss her already!

Radiant looked up at Venli and touched her cheek.

“You are real, right?” Venli asked suddenly, covering Radiant’s hand with hers.

Storms, she really wasn’t the perfect woman, was she?

“Of course I’m real,” Radiant scolded, and shut her up with a kiss.

^ my storygraph “to read” tab for context 😭 but most pressingly out of these would be “another country” by james baldwin and “kitchen” by banana yoshimoto because i physically own them and “the name of the wind” by patrick rothfuss because my beloved english teacher gifted it to me <3

11: what was your favorite book that has been out for a while but you only just read?

i mean “the haunting of hill house” for sure!!! it was originally published in 1959!!! not the oldest book i read this year, that would be “all quiet on the western front” if i remember right, but definitely an all time favourite now that i have read it. AND it helped me majorly with my final literature exam so i owe shirley jackson my life basically

13: what were your least favorite books of the year?

very lucky in that i mainly read good books this year. “saturday” by ian mcewan was not one of those LOL in fact i disliked it so much ian mcewan is now my parasocial enemy!!! at least i got to write an essay about it critically comparing it to “jerusalem” by jez butterworth that i did well on so i suppose that’s a redeeming factor. it’s a post 9/11 book and like most post 9/11 stories written by middle class white people in the imperial core well it says nothing and is just insufferable to read, in places its a decent examination OF the thought process of that class post 9/11 and a core theme is generational divide so much of the protags insufferableness is intentional but my god in other places its just not good and i just could not wait for it to be over. i also just dont like mcewans writing style in fairness

15: did you read any books that were nominated for or won awards this year?

yes!!! “beloved” by toni morrison won tons of awards when it was published - pulitzer prize, american book award, anisfield-wolf book award, etc and “the haunting of hill house” by shirley jackson was nominated for the national book award for example

18: how many books did you buy?

around 10 i think? i usually get my books from a super cheap second hand website so im winning there ‼️‼️

23: what’s the fastest time it took you to read a book?

“the kite runner” by khaled hosseini….., i read it all in a few hours 😭😭 i was ROOTED!!!

24: did you dnf anything, why?

nahh though i do have a few books i started months and months ago and havent finished yet. but i just call that part of the process lmaooo

ethan and lily watching cal and alicia together and lily’s like “just when i was starting to think she wasn’t quite as dumb as she looks” and ethan goes “you’re not jealous are you?” and she’s like “no, just full of pity. some women are beyond help.”💀

iain and jez come over and say how alicia and cal must be official now then and lily’s like “it’s like watching a baby antelope at the watering hole” HELPSJDKFJJ

ohhh this is the scene! iain says a few of the lads are going out for a drink later and invites lily and she says sure and when iain’s gone ethan goes “well, someone’s going home with a hunky paramedic” BI ETHAN BI ETHAN BI ETHAN🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 bc describing your male colleague as “hunky” is a very heterosexual thing for a man to do /s lily goes “ha, please” and he goes “don’t forget the five year plan lily! tick tock!” I MISS THEIR FRIENDSHIP SO MUCH😫😫

yknow if ethan’s gonna go travelling with bodhi i’m gonna choose to believe he’s going to go visit lily in hong kong. i should write a fic. i have actually been to hong kong myself but i was like 4 so i don’t remember what the city was like or anything.

why did ethan just fully take on a gay best friend role in that scene😭😭 this made me wonder if this ep had the same writer as handcuffs (rashan date ep) but no it doesn’t so there are TWO writers (at least) who were absolutely determined to make ethan queer! i thank them for their service!

also why is matchmaking ethan and alicia’s thing sjdkdjfj like them teaming up in s33 to get rash and gem back together, and, like here, they weren’t actually together themselves then either! (though they ended up getting back together at the same time, leading to them overhearing rash and gem having sex sjsjjfkfk)

lmaoo why is elle going “karen please don’t do this! karen!” while her patient runs away while making no actual effort to stop her😭

sjdkfkfk now alicia’s trying to help lily find a man, asking her what her type is and lily isn’t telling her so she looks around and suggests dylan “consultant? very eligible?” and lily goes “i once considered dr keogh but he still has that dog and mental health issues can be genetic, plus he lives on a barge” alicia’s face while she’s listening to that SKDKFKKF can you imagine dylan and lily though they would not work at all😭 too different flavours of autism

lmaoo alicia introduces herself and lily to mr grayling and leaves lily to speak to him and goes to stand the other side of the nurses station and like motions for her to check his hand for a wedding ring and stuff SKDKKFKF

LMAO alicia goes up to mr grayling and fully just asks him if he wants to take lily out on a date😭😭 he’s like “extraordinary. you can tell dr chao to meet me here at 7 o’clock sharp”

lily’s like “i cannot believe you just did that! what am i gonna wear?” sjsjfjfkfk

aww duffy’s granddaughter is born

charlie and duffy talking about how they’ve had 30 years of friendship and duffy’s like “it wasn’t just friendship though was it?”👀👀

Currently Reading: Recently finished the Love Storm novel, thanks to my LITA obsession. It was definitely...interesting.

Current Obsession: Pretty obvious by showing up in every one of these categories: Love In The Air/Boss and Noeul :D

It's been about 2.5 months since I saw the first video on ig that made me research and watch the series and still I fall asleep and wake up to thoughts about these two or the show on most days.

(Honorable mention to SHINee - it their 15th anniversary and my 11th year as a Shawol; they're finally all done with the military and currently promoting - lots of things happening and I couldn't be happier about it. You can see me lose my mind over them over at my main blog ♥)

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

There have been some successful video-game-to-movie adaptations made here and there. Out of all of them, Edge of Tomorrow is the best… even though it isn’t actually based on a game. It’s hard to explain but you’ll see what I mean if you read on.

After an arduous struggle against alien invaders called Mimics, mankind has finally managed to hold their advance and now, we’re getting ready to counter-attack. When Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is ordered to head into battle by his superiors, he tries to unsuccessfully blackmail his way out of combat, is knocked unconscious and sent to the front lines as punishment. The campaign is a disaster. Within minutes, everyone, including Cage, is dead. That’s when he wakes up. Something happened to him and now he relives that attack over and over.

Based on the Japanese novel All You Need is Kill (which is actually a much better title), this movie takes you by surprise. I had to spoil the premise to get you intrigued, but if you didn’t know, you’d be scratching your head from the beginning. Tom Cruise playing a coward who gets bumped off minutes in? Even when he wakes up alive again, he’s still a wimp who desperately wants to avoid the battlefield. Didn’t see that coming. What follows is a hybrid of Starship Troopers and Groundhog Day. Like in a video game, everyone - Mimic and human alike - ends up at the same spot, does the same thing, and has the same lines to say unless Cage does something to move them. This allows him to strategize and through trial and error, become impossibly skilled. This means you’ll get many hilarious scenes as he tries to get to that one place at the right time… only to fail and die horribly. You’ll also see mind-blowing sequences in which he effortlessly blows legions of opponents away, firing behind him in exactly the right spot to ensure a kill shot and dodging projectiles like he’s got eyes on the back of his head.

The time loop mechanic is just one aspect of the film. The truth is, no matter how good you are at firing a gun, you’ll eventually run out of bullets. A single man could never take down an entire invasion on his own. As we get deeper into the plot, we move away from the chaos of the war zone and towards the big question. Why is this happening? How does Cage break the loop? The answers lie in Sergeant Rita Vrataski, the “Full Metal Bitch” (Emily Blunt). She’s the opposite of Cage. Cool, collected, brave and highly skilled. Too bad the time power thing was given to the slimy noodle instead of her…

Edge of Tomorrow is a blast. It’s laugh-out-loud funny, and then it switches into action mode. The battles are the kind that makes other films look wimpy by comparison. Not only are the actors doing their own stunts but all of the combat is creative and expertly directed. We get plenty of satisfying character moments and growth, which is expected in this type of film, but the way the screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth does it is unexpected. A large chunk of the film is about two people, one of which can change, and the other cannot, at least not in the same way.

The plot moves quickly, there are many memorable lines and moments, you love digging into the mystery and the special effects are top-notch. There’s so much of it to like you start second-guessing yourself. “Is this movie really this awesome, or am I crazy?” Your gut instinct is correct. “Awesome” is the perfect word. The ending might seem a little too clean for some but a key line in the film sets it up and you’ve got to give this picture credit for truly understanding just how powerful a tool time travel is.

Following a so-so run at the box office, Edge of Tomorrow was rebranded as Live. Die. Repeat on home video. Now, it's just waiting to be discovered. Seek it out and you’ll have a blast. (On Blu-ray, April 19, 2019)

how does your muse handle grief?

The simple answer is that he doesn't most of the time. He ends up displacing it elsewhere, be it his ridiculous antics or his overly happy go lucky attitude, at least around others. The worse the grief, the more over the top he is. If he ever finds himself alone, he is more likely to just find himself a quiet corner to listen to music and just stay there, neglecting everything else he shouldn't be. On the rare occasion he opens up to someone, he's usually a crying mess.

does your muse lean more toward “forgive and forget” or “resent and remember?”

Small things, he's more forgive and forget. Big things like betrayal and abandonment? Resent and remember.

what does your muse love doing with other people?

He loves just spending time with the people he cares about. He'd be happy just doing what they wanted to do because he'd be doing it with them. If he had to pick, he might like to go to a concert or a club, basically anywhere with music.

does your muse think people deserve second chances?

Depends on the severity. Again, usually yes, unless it's something he finds unforgivable, again, like abandonment, betrayal, not being there when he is in a dire place - the last is within reason. It has to be an active choice. If there's nothing they can do, he won't hold it against someone. If his parents came waltzing in asking for a second chance after ding dong ditching him at the orphanage? The answer would be a resounding FUCK NO.

what would be the best way to cheer up your muse when they’re sad?

Small gestures always help. It doesn't have to be a gift. It could just be the company of a close friend just doing something to distract him. But if it were a physical thing, cupcakes. The answer there is always cupcakes.

Due to his age, he's lost many people in his life. Some closer than others. So he understands your loss and is there in whatever way you need him to be.

He's there to offer a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen.

He'll kiss your hands as you talk. Or rub your back. Or whatever you wish. He's there to support you.

Offers to help you grow the most beautiful flowers for their grave when you're ready.

He lets you talk all you want. Whenever you need. It doesn't matter if he's in the middle of something.

He's always there for you.

If you want to get your mind off of it, he'll offer many relaxing activities.

No matter what you need to do, he will be there for you and he'll do his best to provide you his support.

He's the most protective of the bunch, I'd say. But he's also rather awkward.

He will bring you things to cheer you up. Your favorite snacks and drinks, fluffy blankets...

He gets you plushies and other stuff you can cuddle up to.

He deals with his issues by biting you, so he offers to let you bite him, hoping it helps at least a little bit.

Tell him what you need, it'll make everything much easier for the both of you.

He'll let you cuddle onto him for as long as you need. He can't say no to you.

He'll let you hold into him as long as you need, doesn't matter how long.

Rain

He's very good at soothing you.

Let's you curl up on his lap. He'll hold you and give you tiny kisses.

He'll play his bass for you, might offer to teach you a few simple riffs.

He'll let you play with his tail and talk about the loved one you lost.

Will offer to take you out for a swim, since it usually soothes him.

He would slowly undress you both and cuddles with you in the bathtub.

He's not too fond of bubble baths, but he doesn't mind if it's for you.

He'll gladly endure anything, really, if it cheers you up.

Kisses your hair often. Murmurs comforting words.

Basically becomes your own personal plushie until you feel better.

Cumulus

Speaking of plushies, this gorgeous Ghoulette becomes your plushie, pillow and mattress.

Lay on top of her all you need. Cry all you need. She's prepared for that.

She'll quietly sing to you, hoping to make you feel better.

If she's not holding you, she's getting your favorite snack and trying anything she can to bring a smile to your face.

She'll listen to you, rubbing comforting circles on your back as she kisses he top of your head.

She's very good at making you feel heard.

She'll listen to any stories you have and will also ask about them, hoping you'll feel a bit better if you focus on the happy memory.

Reconstructing Strange Fate

Y’all started reblogging my Strange Fate Blurbs post and it inspired me to try constructing my own Strange Fate plot out of them. Read on for olympic grade headcanoning!

So what does the end of the world look like? In Witchlight the end hasn’t even advanced far enough that humanity has noticed, so the entire apocalypse has to happen in Strange Fate. No wonder it was going to be extra long! Also I think Ms. Smith didn’t really want to write an apocalypse. High school romance is her jam so it’s not a surprise that she wouldn’t be keen to write a disaster movie. But because of this, we’re left with:

1. Shapeshifters revolt and kill people.

2. ???

3. post-apocalyptic setting where dragons rule!

We know that seven characters go on a mission to save the world, but we don’t know what that mission will be.

I’m going to guess there would have been a dragon big-bad, who isn’t awake yet but once he rises he’ll be able to… hmm… mentally take over the minds of much of humanity and make them shoot missiles at each other to reduce the human population and disrupt society enough that the Night People are safe to come out of the shadows and take over. There’s something like this in Night of the Solstice, Ms. Smith’s first book, the kids suggest getting the army to fight the villain and Morgana tells them that the villain has power over all things nasty and warlike so the army would just make things worse.

Or instead of a big boss dragon, maybe the ancient witches who enchanted the dragons to sleep left something behind. Maybe their bones, so their spirits could be called back to explain their magic spell. But the binding of the dragons certainly happened before America was settled– maybe they foresaw that and had their bones or whatever transported to America. Wasn’t Quinn from colonial times? Maybe he knows something about an order to move some artifact. The only ancient witches we have names for are Hecate Witch-queen and Hellewise, so maybe one of them will come back and advise our heroes, or maybe they just left instructions or a magical dragon-binding macguffin.

So Team Circle Daybreak has to take the four Wild Powers to the place where the big dragon is sleeping, and sneak past the evil Night Worlders who are there doing magic to wake him up. So the team must be Jez, Illiana, Delos and Kierlan as the wild powers, Sarah and Mal as the main characters of the book and… one other. You can pick any character for the last spot but I’m going to pick Keller because she’d volunteer, she’s a fighter so she could defend the wild powers, and I like her. Maggie is another possibility since she wouldn’t let Delos out of her sight, and Hannah is another one since she’s a Circle Daybreak leader and she will be reborn if she dies.

And who are we killing off? We have to kill off five! Kierlan is an obvious one for the chop, since Sarah has a backup soulmate, and Kierlan might turn into a good dragon to battle the evil one. But Sarah is giving me a little bit of Usagi vibe, so she might be the true and pure girl who sacrifices herself to save her friends. And if two of them die we might as well kill all three.

Illiana is also a pure sacrifice type and she has no soulmate, making her more likely to be killed by the plot, but she also has this “healing flames” thing so she would be great to help fix the world afterwards.

I think Keller is also likely to die, just because she’d be happy sacrificing herself. Actually, if Keller died then Illiana and Galen might find each other soulmates so that would be a good plot reason not to kill Illiana. I can also imagine Keller suddenly breaking through to a new level of shapeshifter power and becoming a giant glowing winged panther to have a physical battle with the evil dragon.

My vibe is that Jez and Delos are least likely to die because they both have soulmates to come back to. But it also seems likely for there to be a sudden revelation that the Wild Powers have to spill ALL their blood and sacrifice themselves to release their full power and fix the world. Would make for a cool scene, blue fire spilling from their injuries and consuming all the evil Night Worlders while healing the non-evil ones.

So that’s the ending, some form of those options. But we have a main and secondary story to get there. For our secondary story we have two options: the post-apocalyptic story seen through Sarah’s dreams, which is Crispy’s story, Brionwy’s story, or both. For a long time I thought these two were the same character, with one real name and one cruel nickname, but they seem to be different characters. At least they are now; one of the blurbs has Sarah dreaming about Crispy but I feel like I’ve read other places that it’s Brionwy. Maybe Ms. Smith just wanted to write both forms of the post-apocalyptic story, with Brionwy in the vampire harem and Crispy in the ruins. So we get to write a post-apocalyptic story and it can be either kind! You could even include some characters from thye books. James and Poppy, Quinn, Ash, Thierry and Hannah, all might still be alive in the future. Other characters might have gone through hard choices. If the world was becoming very bad for humans and your vampire soulmate wanted to turn you to keep you safe, would you want to be turned?

Or we can have the secondary story of Ash Redfern visiting all the characters from the other books and protecting them from “ the enemies who, for unknown reasons, are targeting the youngest generation of Harmans and Redferns.” So, not protecting them from the collapse of society due to the apocalypse.

Some of the couples from past books are married and one couple is expecting a baby! This is another great option for a secondary story since you get to imagine a future for all the couples, where they ended up. Is Poppy back in touch with her human family? How are they handling it? Has Thea admitted she remembers being a witch? Are she and Blaise friends again? Has Rashel discovered she and Keller are twins and has she learned to shapeshift? And then at the end Ash has atoned for his evil ways and reunites with Mary-Lynette for the ending. That would be a blast to write!

And now, three pages into this post I wasn’t even planning to write today, we get to the main story. Sarah Strange, a character whose face we know but whose personality we only know from a description. She sounds like an “ordinary girl who is more than she appears” sort of character. She is the first one we have seen who has two soulmates. And they think she “must help establish harmony between humans and creatures of the Night World to stave off the apocalypse.”

Why do they think she can do this? Ms. Smith gave us no hints. Is Sarah something other than a human? Is she half-and-half like Jez? Like Ciri in the Witcher, who is somehow part elf and that makes her a special magical being who can be queen of both elves and humans. (displaying my Witcher ignorance here, love it, don’t understand it! But back to Sarah!) Is she secretlyb the fourth wild power not Kierlan? Is she a lost witch? But that was Illiana’s plotline. Is she an old soul? Is she Brionwy? That would explain their dream connection. Do Sarah’s dreams mean she’s a new creature, an oracle who can see the future? Hang on, I read somewhere– LJ Smith originally meant Strange Fate to be two books, the first one tentatively titled Mystic.

Maybe she can become soulmates with everybody, join everybody in the world together. Didn’t Ms. Smith say something about how she’d like to give everyone in the world empathy so they would all help each other? Sarah’s two silver cords could be the beginning of that power showing itself. And that would let her be very special while also just being an ordinary human. But there hasn’t been any foreshadowing of that, no prophecies about anything other than the four wild powers.

So we meet Sarah as she’s having visions of the dark future. She tells her two cute boy best friends about it. They tell her about the Night World and the looming apocalypse. We just don’t know anything about Sarah’s journey beyond that. I assume she and the boys hook up with Thierry and Circle Daybreak and go along on the final mission. But does she survive? Does she end up with both boys, one, or neither?

In 1999 there was “Sarah Strange is a fragile human girl – happy in Circle Daybreak with her soulmate, Blade, a gentle Vampire. Then Kierlan comes to town. He is an arrogant witch and a Wild Power, and Sarah is strongly attracted to him. But who is her real soulmate? And is the answer waiting in the Night World?” and we could start there if we wanted! It’s interesting because this Sarah knows about the Night World, and may be older than the other heroines, with her soulmate already figured out. Then her family is asked to hide the witch Kierlan who is already known to be the wild power.

But the more recent incarnation of Sarah is 16 and in high school, with her best friends Kierlan Drache and Mal Harman. So what can we deduce about these boys? They are from important Night World families but have not been mentioned in previous books. Galen never mentioned his cousin/brother/whatever Kierlan is, and the Crone didn’t mention Mal as a Harman they looked at to see if he might be the Witch Child. That makes some sense; they probably just knew the Witch Child was a girl, but it’s a missed chance to foreshadow the final book’s characters and make the world feel more connected. Makes me wonder how far ahead the apocalypse arc was planned. I get a vibe that “not very” is the answer, the prophecy is vague enough that… well… what does “one from the twilight” even mean?

Mal is a Harman so he’s a witch. A male witch, which is rare.. Thea, Gillian and Illiana were all blondes, so Mal probably has light hair too. He and Sarah go to high school together and have been friends for some time so Mal has a home and a settled life of some sort.

Kierlan is now a Drache, from the first family of the shapeshifters. If he’s like Galen, he hasn’t chosen an animal form yet. I think he’s gotta go for “good dragon” in the end, it’s just the only thing that makes suitable apocalyptic sense. Kierlan is the fourth wild power. How does he know? How did Circle Daybreak find out? Is he a member of Circle Daybreak or still undecided? He has also been friends with Sarah for a while so he’s lived in the same town for some time.

If Mal is blond that would make Kierlan the dark haired one because in YA books there’s always one fair haired and one dark haired boy and the dark haired one is always the bad boy and always the one the girl chooses in the end, them’s the rules! Probably the “dark hair and golden eyes” that Ms. Smith likes. Maybe Kierlan is a rebel from his family, which would explain why good-boy Galen doesn’t mention him. Maybe Kierlan isn’t sure about Circle Daybreak. The shapeshifters joined the good side thanks to Illiana, but a lot of individual shapeshifters probably still think that going back to the old days of ruling humanity sounds like a good deal. Kierlan could be undecided but Sarah shows him the pure goodness of humanity and turns him to the side of good.

Do the two boys get along? Are they fighting over Sarah? Do they know that she has silver cords with both of them? Have there ever been multi-soulmate groups like this? Is threesomeing a thing in the Night World? It’s not a thing in teen literature of 1999 which makes me think that at the end of this Sarah can have no more than one soulmate remaining.

And… and… there is so much more! There are hints in the stories on the webpage, Ms. Smith gives so many Strange Fate clues in her blog which I am looking at right now on the wayback machine! This post was just written from the details that randomly stuck in my brain!

it's not so much a secret she keeps but she does know that the world is so much larger than people know. emma tig knows it. dorian williams knows it. doctor saltzman knows it too.

floribeth pieced it all together with wade by her side. she'll divulge the information, but you have to ask for it. and you have to know what you're asking for.

once you know this, you can't unknow this. you'll carry the knowledge forever that there is more out there than mystic falls and new orleans and the salvatore school and malivore.

malivore is a part of the dark dimension, which in itself houses a bunch of supernatural creatures. most - if not all - of those creatures have some link or connection to the night world, an underground society consisting of night people: vampires, werewolves, witches and shapeshifters.

the night world has it's own laws and is governed by a joint council: the inner circle governs the witches and the elders govern the vampires.

(it even had it's own wars.)

it is decreed by the joint council, for instance, that blood-feasts are illegal and forbidden. none of this stops the night people from hosting such events or attending them. blood-feasts are held in black iris clubs - nightclubs and bars for any and all supernaturals - all across america. prominent black iris clubs are the ones in pennsylvania and san francisco. humans aren't allowed (except if they are the ones that will be taken to bed or exsanguinated) and one must be over eighteen - or at least look to be over eighteen - to enter.

there are several other groups active in the night world right now: - the lancers; elite vampire hunters that are stationed on the east coast. their hq is found in boston, massachusetts and they work together with triad industries. - jez redfern's gang; a gang of teenage vampires consisting of morgead blackthorn, thistle galena, raven mandril and valerian stillman. they are all stationed in san francisco. morgead blackthorn might have founded the gang but jez is leading it now. - circle midnight; one of the two official nationwide witch circles which is open to all witches. those who hold with circle midnight lean towards malevolent magic and are not the biggest fans of humans. - circle twilight; one of the two official nationwide witch circles which is open to all witches. those who hold with circle twilight lean towards benevolent magic, hold respect for life but merely tolerate humans. they will attack if provoked. - circle daybreak; a special kind of witch circle, in the sense that it welcomes everyone with open arms from fellow witches to vampires to werewolves to shapeshifters to humans. their goal is to make sure the night world and the human world live in harmony. or as close to it as they can manage. members of this circle are known as 'daybreakers' and floribeth is currently working on officially joining this circle (as she's already been working with them for quite some time now). - keller's team; an elite fighting team consisting of raksha keller, a shapeshifter; winfrith arlin, a witch and nyssa johnson, a vampire. they are considered to be circle daybreak's top operatives and are often out in the field.

due to being related to the harman family through her mother, floribeth has always been drawn to harmony, a town in virginia, coincidentally near mystic falls and grove hill which is filled to the brim with supernatural creatures and it is there that floribeth settles down eventually.

and she’s like “of all the places??” “i don’t really like flying” “alaska” “yes, the aurora borealis. although you wouldn’t need to go that far. iceland? norway? scotland!”

“since we nearly… yknow like how close we came to… in the crash it’s made me think of all the places i haven’t been. hey we could go!” “alaska sounds a bit cold for me. my lips get chapped.” sjdkfkgk he’s so😭 “falmouth. one day. little road trip.” “yeah, i’d like that. on one condition though, you have to tell me why your dad calls you scoobie.” “no chance” “oh come on! quid pro quo, i told you about nibbles.” “well more fool you” I LOVEEE THEMMM🥺🥺🥺🥺 i feel like they probably never got to go on their little road trip to falmouth though :(

they both laugh and then stop to just stare at each other in silence for like a good 10 seconds at least and then ethan breaks it to tell her that her mum’s blood tests confirm gonorrhoea😭😭

alicia going and having a go at her dad for letting her mum walk all over him and taking her back after cheating but he reveals that it was him who cheated

alicia asks her mum why she let him back when she knew and she says “do you wanna be alone?” and alicia goes “well it’s better than relying on a man to make you happy” so true!!

her mum says she lied for him because alicia worshipped him and she didn’t want her to be heartbroken as well. and she says maybe alicia’s better off the way she is, single, successful, and happy

jez and max are complaining about their cleaning rota and cal’s like “have you boys never heard of cleaners?” and jez says they’re barely making the rent right now and ethan’s asks why don’t they rent out their box room and max goes “who’d want to live in that?” but alicia was complaining about still living with her parents to ethan earlier so he knows just the person!

aww ethan meets alicia in the pub before the training thing but she’s doing tequila shots and already pretty drunk and she talks about how her mum’s basically given up on life because of a man but that won’t be her she’s just going to have fun. she says he should have fun as well because they both nearly died. he tells her he negotiated a good rent with jez and max and gives her the keys and she’s like “awwww that’s so nice” and then some random man comes up and she leaves with him😭

he just says jez and max but did robyn not live there too?? she must be spending a lot of time at glen’s, but she can’t have actually moved out or they could’ve rented out her room rather than the box room?

so basically if alicia’s dad wasn’t cheating on her mum, or just if alicia hadn’t found out at this point in time, it wouldn’t have taken nearly as long for her and ethan to get together😭😭

cal comes in while alicia’s going out and he’s like “she’s a player? trust me mate you’ve dodged a bullet with that one” so again, cal thinks that either alicia likes ethan back or she’s a player, but doesn’t expect to be cheated on? tbf he does get distrustful of her, but that’s only after he’s found the cuff link

cal tries to cheer ethan up in his own special way “right come on, how about we get this training thing out the way and then we’ll go and get you a curry, okay? and the fast and the furious box set” “i hate the fast and the furious” “i know, come on” bless😭😭

why are iain and jez walking over to the ambulance station with the rest of them for the training thing, surely they should be there already?? wait actually nvm jez was talking to max wasn’t he, so i guess iain must have been over there with him

elle reveals the training thing is actually basketball🥺 dylan goes “there’s about a million things i’d rather do than this, and one of them would’ve been a peri-arrest simulation exercise” SKDKKSDKK

it’s doctors vs nurses but isn’t that a bit unfair?? dylan’s just standing there not playing and ethan’s still limping from his dislocated knee so that leaves basically just cal and elle (with a small contribution from ethan) vs ALL the nurses plus noel, max, and jez

also isn’t is a bit odd that noel and max were even there in the first place?? were they expecting to participate in the training?? iain and jez too tbh bc they’re not even part of the emergency department?? maybe elle just told them to come anyway
