sowwy. i thought of this at 3am and now it’s 6am and the idea of this just makes me sad. so y’all need to be sad with me, ok?

Ethereal. There'd been no other way to describe it; no other word comes close to begin to explain the sight before you. Clad in a form unrecognizable to you but one as familiar to him as if it were the back of his own hand, Dan Heng parted the sea of the Scalegorge Waterscape like a god. And yet, of course, it was him.

For all your time aboard the Astral Express, you knew each of its passengers harboured a secret or a shame or two. You never pressed or pried or pondered, not even once. Especially to Dan Heng. An unopened book, you often times had to guess what he'd been feeling within a moment. This, too, you were fine with, because whenever he did decide to open up to you, even just a little, you'd been elated. Whatever amount of trust he had in you, even if only a smidgen, that'd been enough for you.

But this was big. A huge secret. Dan Heng is beside you. And yet, not.

At this point in your Trailblazing, you'd only ever encountered the Vidyadhara species here, on the Xianzhou Luofu. Not only are they a long-life species, but they're also descendants of the Aeon of Permanence. Equipped with tails and horns, ones that you couldn't help but stare at in awe (poor Lady Baiju had been victimized by your intense staring until she'd offered to let you touch them, only to learn of their soft-scaled nature; the horns? Just as soft).

But seeing them on Dan Heng is... a different story. Somehow, you're finding it difficult to meet his eyes, but you feel him staring at you, now, so very vehemently so, even while locked in conversation with Jing Yuan and Lady Fu.

Why are you avoiding him? You feel so strange, the longer this behaviour persists. After learning of his story's details, your heart screams at you to comfort him, to pull him aside and give all of your promises to him during his unease. But instead, you decide to walk away from their strategy session to face Phantylia — it's simple enough, just take her down, right? You don't need to hear all the details — and instead, face out at the open waterscape just steps away from you, perched on a shattered pillar.

And eventually, when Dan Heng confirms his presence is no longer required before the two, he makes his way over to where you sit, now absentmindedly fiddling with the grip of your weapon. You bristle upon hearing him approach, and he wonders if you would've reacted the same if one of the others had approached you; if it were Caelus or March or Mister Yang, would you have shot such a concerned look over your shoulder?

Your name feels a little acidic, sitting on his tongue, so he forces it out to relieve him. You swallow, and turn away once more, only to shuffle to the left of the broken pillar to allow him room to join you. And he does, albeit in caution, because for some reason, you have your guard up against him now.

He raises a hesitant hand that curls around your waist, his other following to hold onto your right arm’s sleeve, and in the corner of your eye, Dan Heng spots you biting down on your lower lip and glancing down at him. The expression you find on his face tells of two things— his eventual apology for his unintended deceit, and, that he has so many things to say, but knows not where to begin.

“Dan Heng,” you call, your voice soft— he easily recognizes it as the one you choose to use when you find yourself having to lecture March 7th, or when you’d chastised Caelus for digging through the trash for a chance at finding treasure. You never shout, but your firm, monotone voice is enough to make even a guiltless criminal flinch. Now, you’ll use it on him, the man you once called your “first and only love”. Now, you’ll call him a pretender, a liar, a fraud, a— “are you okay?”

For the briefest of moments, his mind stalls, his heart quick to follow. It’s hard to breathe all of a sudden, he finds. It doesn’t go unnoticed by you, and despite your very specific reservations, you throw your arms around him, hands running smooth across his back and between his shoulder blades.

Dan Heng doesn’t want to cry. If anything, they’d be tears of frustration — toward his circumstances, toward his past life’s relationships, toward you, toward himself — and if he started crying, he just might not stop. So he speaks, instead, finally breathing, and hoping the distraction helps.

“… are you mad at me?”

It barely does.

“At you? Never.” You, too, exhale a long breath, one you must’ve been holding for a while, and part from him. “At myself, for thinking the unfair thoughts that I am? For behaving the way I’d just behaved before? Extremely. I’m angry. I’m embarrassed. I’m… I’m sad.”

Dan Heng’s grip on you tightens from behind, and he rests his head on your shoulder.

“Why are you sad?”

You can’t bite back the chuckle that’d settled in the back of your throat. It’s not one of humour, either.

“Because I’m just a human,” you answer, tone light, but still embittered. “I’m just a human… I’ll grow older and older until I die, and you’ll stay the same as you are for decades, for centuries. We won’t grow old together. But you knew that. Time passes so differently for the two of us. And eventually, you’ll have to leave me; you’ll have to move on and leave this… this speck of ash I’ll become behind.”

Dan Heng’s lips part in horror. “N-No, I— no, please, don’t… don’t say any of that. I… I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you. I was… I never wanted to hurt you by omitting the truth, but it was too hard for me to say anything… yet.” This time, saying your name leaves his tongue dry, and it’s left heavy in his mouth. “I’d planned to tell you eventually. Soon.” In his lap, he twists his fingers around, the anxiety welled up inside him pulling out his old habits. “It… isn’t easy for me to speak about my past or my lineage, and I’d been trying to come with a way to talk to you about it.

“And… I’ve felt the same way for as long as we’ve been together, you know.” You turn to him, hearing his words pass through clenched teeth. “That one day, you’ll… you’ll just be gone. It… isn’t fair.”

“Dan Heng…”

“I thought… you were mad at me,” he adds lowly, “with the way you were ignoring me before.”

“… for a second, I was,” you murmur back, instantly feeling guilty. “But when I joined all of you, I made a promise to myself to not ask questions, and to not be offended if any of you had any secrets you wanted to keep to yourselves. I-I think that, because you and I are together, I started to want to know more about your past… not thinking it might’ve been so painful that you wanted to leave it be. I’m sorry.” Your head instinctively bows a little. “It was selfish of me to act like that. I’m sorry.”

Dan Heng wastes no time in grabbing you from around your shoulders and pulling you into him again. You huff, blinking quickly to send away the tears lining up along your eyelids.

“Don’t apologize. I was… inconsiderate. I promise— I’ll be with you for as long as you wish for me to.”

You raise your hand to rest it atop one of his, and squeeze.

“… I wish it could be forever.”

dan heng

up to this day, he remembers the promises you both made, what you liked, disliked and everything about you. although reminiscing does not hurt him like it used to, it still makes him long for your presence.

the type to get dreams of you and when you tell him in his dreams that you will most certainly meet again, he is patient enough to wait. maybe it was foolish to rely on dreams but his desire to meet you and love you again is immeasurable.

time passed by and dan heng was still waiting, wearing the bracelet you always wore. he would always fiddle on it when he is worried. maybe he should stop waiting? but what if you appear when you stop waiting?

when himeko and welt came back from an expedition, they brought in a new member of the astral express. their name happened to be (name) and they happen to have similar features to the one dan heng has always remembered.

dan heng’s eyes widened as he realized his dreams were correct. you were correct. he continued to stare at you while doing your introduction. you looked ethereal, you looked timeless as if youve never aged the last time hes seen you and it was like youve always been alive.

you caught up on his staring after you introduced yourself to the astral express and vice versa. you somehow cant put a finger on why he does look familiar but you felt at ease just being with him.

“um… dan heng correct? we have the same bracelet, can i ask where did you get it from? also do i know you?”

“i got this from someone who i used to know and their name was also (name). they made it for me.”

blade

after sacrificing himself to become a blade, his memory of you was not the best however he still felt the same intensity of emotions he held whenever he remembers your name. he doesnt know if its a blessing or a curse.

despite being blade, some parts of him is still ren. and ren has intense feelings for you. blade for some reason remembers the last argument you both had before you died. you were concerned about him possessing and delving into more power which lead to him being defensive and arguing with you.

as much as blade likes remembering you, your touch, your love and you in general, he cant help but harbour some guilt and sadness. he’d prefer if he left your name alone in peace. even though he wants to get to know you again and apologize, what was the point if you were dead. if your lives werent meant to meet each other again in any universe? it would be best if he just forgets about you.

fast forward and his bad luck struck him or this is probably in elios’ script but he was now arrested by the cloud knights of xianzhou alliance. it wasnt much of big of a deal to be honest but while in his cell, one of the cloud knights didnt have a helmet on, guarding his room.

he caught a glimpse of your face and this unlocks a lot of his memories as ren. how… timely, ironic it was to be held captive by your own reincarnation. its as if the heavens really planned it from the start.

you felt him staring at your face and which you snarled asking if theres something wrong. he just continously stared and smirked. you couldnt shake a feeling of familiarity with blade but aeons its an unbearable feeling but why would you say this to the general or other cloud knights… they might just interrogate you.

“you know if youre not going to answer my question well so be it. i know ive seen you in my dreams. i know we’ve met before. i know you know me from somewhere. but who are you?”

“you are bold as ever… but you should maybe figure out things on your own? its no fun giving you all the answers is it not? my new appearance is a clue, i’ll give you that.”

jing yuan

you knew jing yuan as your sparring mate whenever he was under jingliu and you under a different master. you both trained to becoming the strongest and maybe compete for the highest title of the alliance.

you sparred almost everyday with him. he enjoyed every moment he has with you. whether it was going for walks or eating food with you, it is a cherishable moment for him and you too. as you both grew into your teen years, you both happened to confess at the same time and became official.

unfortunately, your death caught up with you quickly. jing yuan was still quite young to experience grief but it didnt hinder him to train the hardest. jingliu wasnt in particular fond of you in the first place since you were distacting him.

without letting his master know, jing yuan would write letters to you everyday about what hes doing and how much he loves you. wherever you are he knows you both are in the same world or universe one way or another. he keeps most of your possessions because he believes it is his goodluck charm.

when he became general, he still wrote letters to you and even ask some of his servants to make a mini statue of your weapon to be displayed, in exchange for great amounts of money. he deeply misses you and he knows he carries a great amount of responsibility now that he is a leader. he secretly prays he gets to meet you again, even for one last time.

one faithful morning, he stumbled across a familiar face while shopping miscellaneous stuff for his cute mimi because he accidentally bumped into you pretty hard.

“ouch! be mindful of where you’re…. i-i apologize! i didnt mean to.”

“oh its alright it is actually my fault, i apologize. sorry to ask you this question but is your name (name)?”

“yes it is… why do you ask?

… on second thought i think you look familiar asides from the fact youre the general, i feel like i’ve known you before.”

Settlement: Lydestrum, City of Glass and Mist

Attracting artisans, merchants, and those who wish to go unseen among its splendours, Lydestrum is a centre for trade across the astral sea, a glimmering jewel of a port city set in the centre of an ever swirling cloudbank.

Surging aetheric currents surround the planetoid Lydestrum is built into, not only making unauthorized approach to the city nearly impossible, but also contributing to one of its greatest industries: capturing the magical potential carried along with those currents and storing them in great batteries that can be used to power jammerships, artifice, or great acts of spellcraft.

Adventure Hooks:

Though far less rowdy than many other astral ports, the Lydestrum harbour district is a paradise for adventurers, able to pick up rumours, goods from exotic reaches of wildspace, and potential employment across any number of vessels (of varying repute). If nothing else, the party can always pick up some extra work rooting out void beats and wild elementals that are attracted to the aetheric currents that surround the settlement, and frequently make their nests in the great tunnels that run beneath the city and its outreaching rockmass.

Lydestrum is a beautiful city, founded by architects who now use the great wealth brought in by its harbours and aether trade to build marvels across the plannetoid and in pockets of calm scattered throughout the churning clouds. One of the greatest of these marvels, the Mirador, was lost when an attack against the city centuries ago destabilized the winds and sucked the spirelike structure out into the ever shifting winds, never to be seen again. Driven by a desire to recover lost history and believing the structure has merely been trapped in the currents, not destroyed, an up and coming vedalken architect wants to hires the party to help him find this needle in the cloudstack, needing their help in exploring the dangerous reaches of the city and just maybe breaking into a few off-limits meteorological archives to get him the data he needs?

While many wonders might attract the party while out browsing the city’s aether-lit bazaar, what might most draw their eye is the Beacon Brightsmithy, a shop peddling a series of weapons and other devices seemingly made of solidified light. Operated by the Turevas, a father daughter pair of gnomes, the Beacon is a wonder hidden among wonders, Supplying many of the city’s military officers and warships with lightwrought weapons and willing to do the same for the party. On a subsequent visit however, the party find the shop in disarray, the younger Turevas distraught at her father's apparent disappearance and possible kidnapping... more on that mystery below the cut.

Background: The city of glass and mist pays no allegiance to any world-spanning empire, having instead been founded (as an art project of all things) by a group of Vedalken known as the “Faceters”. This conclave of architects and cloudwatchers eventually evolved into the Lydestrum’s governing body, who see the city’s operation as secondary to its continued development as a thing of art. Proud to the point of jealousy over the “greatness” of their home, the Faceters are welcoming to traders of every stripe but all but shun any diplomatic or political oveture made their way, feeling that outsiders should be content to gauk at the marvels the conclave has produced and then get back to their lives of uncultivated ignorance once they’ve passed beyond the cloud bank.

Further adventures:

Though the intial evidence around the Turevas smithy might point the party in the the direction of thinking he was kidnapped by some of the sketchier traders down by harborside, a closer inspection will reveal that though the workshop was tossed, none of the lightwrought weapons were taken along with their maker, meaning that the gnomish smith was likely not greed that motivated this crime. Witnesses will likewise report a group of rough looking characters in the area making their way to and from the harbour, but that they were all speaking the local dialect of vedalken without accent.

Investigations into the upper reaches of Lydestrum are likely to be hindered by the fact that that the party are largely regarded as ignorant tourists, their questions answered with slow explanations of the building’s history or directions back to the foreigner's quarter. They will have one ally though, Garahame, a conclave military officer and longtime friend of Turevas who’s just as concerned by the gnome’s disappearance as they are.

The internal politics of the Faceter conclave are broken up into numerous “sets”, non-exclusive factions and cliques that all have distinct opinions on how they want the city to be run. Garahame belongs to the “Tower” set, a largely isolationist faction that just so happened to be working with Turevas to create a building sized light cannon to act as a deterrent against any fleet or polis that would attempt to overtake Lydestrum like the attack that cost them the Mirador. These plans were discovered by the “Gate” set, a commerce based faction that oversee the city’s diplomacy and markets, who were pretty staunch in their belief that Lydestrum building a big gun and pointing it at all their neighbors wouldn’t be a good step for peace, and so abducted Turevas with the use of illusion and have spent the intervening time trying to show him the error in his ways. Whatever set the players end up siding with will have knock on repercussions on Turevas and throughout the city, potentially spelling prosperity for one and crisis for another.

Wolmeric Week 2023

#6: Home

6th Sun of the Sixth Umbral Moon, Year 5 of the 7th Astral Era

It’s the day after our victory over the Endsinger, and we have averted the Final Days. I still can’t believe how much has happened in the past few weeks, let alone in the last few days. We not only traveled into the ancient past, but also to the very edge of the universe, and overcame despair itself. It has been quite the adventure for sure, and if I were to be honest, I would hope that we never have to face anything even remotely close to the threat of the Final Days ever again. I want to live the quiet life for a while, thank you very much.

Well, if I have learned anything from all of this, I do know one thing with absolute certainty: that I had the strength to move forward, to face the greatest of challenges, all because I knew that Aymeric was waiting for me to return victorious, just as he had done so many times before. I realize now that he always believed in me, his faith never shaken, his love never wavered. And neither has mine in turn.

As we landed the Ragnarok in the Old Sharlayan Harbour, I saw everyone stand there, celebrating our victory… and then I saw Aymeric standing there, with the biggest, most brilliant smile on his face. I couldn’t help myself, I jumped down into the water and waded through the water as fast as I could, and jumped into his arms.

In that moment, I knew that I was finally safe, and that I was happier than I could have ever imagined. Yes, in his arms, I was home, at last.

HMMM regarding me getting buried in the ground while not aware of the astral (which is still a mystery) I wonder if that was a result of me meditating on the nature of trees, OR, and this is less likely but funnier, I wonder if I left the home realm to go to the Harbour, found that special drink I want to try which makes you want to be a garden, drank it, went back home, and just went buckwild digging a hole and burying myself.

While listening to music in preparation for uni work I had this thought that the chorus for P!nk's Blow Me (One Last Kiss) could fit the high cloud quintet lore, at least to my current understanding of it

Lyrics breakdown:

I think I finally had enough

Following Baiheng's sacrifice on the battlefield, Dan Feng has had enough of endless war and bloodshed and wishes to resurrect her.

I think I maybe think too much

Jing Yuan, as the Divine Foresight, would have to constantly consider different battle strategies and tactics to minimise losses against the denizens of abundance, likely resulting in excessive rumination and stress.

I think this might be it for us

"Of five people, three must pay a price"

Baiheng's death starts the domino effect that eventually leads to the disbanding of the hcq.

Yingxing becomes Blade after using emanator Shuhu's flesh in an attempt to resurrect Baiheng, his immortality being both a blessing and a curse.

Dan Feng is forced to undergo moltung rebirth as punishment for committing one of the ten unpardonable sins, eventually reincarnating into Dan Heng.

Jingliu becomes mara-struck after defeating the Transmutation Arcanum and eventually succcumbs to her insanity.

Of the hcq, only Jing Yuan remains.

Blow me one last kiss

The act of blowing a kiss usually occurs when people are parting ways or when they are physically distant but are within view of each other.

Maybe Baiheng blew a kiss to her friends before fighting the denizens of abundance, leading to her death. This would make her last interaction with the hcq be a farewell flying kiss.

You think I'm just too serious

As the general of the Luofu, Jing Yuan is forced to do his duty to the Xianzhou, including killing a mara-struck Jingliu, (presumably) banishing a vengeful Yingxing/Blade, and exiling the reincarnation of Dan Feng.

I think you're full of shit

Based on Blade's voiceline "About Jing Yuan", I'd imagine he harbours some kind of resentment for Jing Yuan never doing anything to avoid their fates (doomed by the narrative and all that).

My head is spinning so

The beginning of the Xianzhou Luofu main quest has Dan Heng have a nightmare about Blade and his statement "Of five people, three must pay a price. You are one of them."

Just when it can't get worse

As per the the trailblaze mission, Kafka's message to the Astral express brings the crew to the hcq's homeworld, much to Dan Heng's chagrin I assume.

I've had a shit day

After arriving at Scalegorge Waterscape, Dan Heng, Blade and Yanqing fight, upon which it is revealed that Dan Heng is the current incarnation of Dan Feng and half of Imbibitor Lunae (with Bailu being the other half).

Have you had a shit day?

Jing Yuan allows Kafka to take Blade away instead of capturing him and brings Dan Heng IL to the Astral Express crew.

We've had a shit day

Cue the boss fight with Phantylia, where Dan Heng basically impales Jing Yuan with cloudpiercer (his spear) to achieve victory.

I think that life's too short for this

Not so much a lore-related part, but I think it is a bit ironic that in the hcq how the long-life species have their lives cut short, and the short-life species have their lives significantly extended.

Jingliu and Baiheng would have been the first of the long-life species to die, and Dan Heng would choose to live as a (short-life) member of the Astral Express instead of as a High Elder on the Luofu

Yingxing had gained an immortal body as Blade, thus extending his life significantly more than if he remained a short-life being.

As expected, only Jing Yuan remains the same.

Want back my ignorance and bliss

I'd imagine that the current incarnations of the hcq sometimes reminisce about the good old days when they were all alive and well, but alas they are doomed by the narrative and are no longer who they once were.

I think I've had enough of this

Dan Heng no longer wishes to be affiliated with Imbibitor Lunae and hopes to leave Dan Feng's legacy behind.

Blow me one last kiss

Jingliu's companion quest has the hcq meet up for the last time at Scalegorge Waterscape, where they truly disband and go their own separate ways.

I did think that some other lines in the song could also fit, but only in snippets as opposed to the whole section that is the chorus. Such as:

Could reference the feelings of the hcq after Baiheng's death

MY TAVS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE COMPANIONS

Dreuer

Shadowheart - initially she irritated him. Her haughty demeanour and unsubtle cultist vibes pissed him off. But naturally, he has sympathy with anyone subjugated by an unjust god (even when he wasn’t entirely sure why he felt that way), and when she confessed to being a Sharran he softened up.

She teases him more often than he teases her but he’s not immune to standing behind yer and doing an impression of her while she’s talking. Deadpan of course. And he will deny all knowledge of doing so should she turn around and challenge him.

Despite being older by almost a decade, she has almost a big sister or even maternal attitude towards him. He is a very sensitive man prone to getting himself in Situations, and she has gotten very used to patching up his old ass.

Astarion - Hated him. To the point where he genuinely tried to stake him through the heart. His arrogance and attitude were like sandpaper on skin, and Dreuer despised him.

As more of Astarion’s past was revealed, Dreuer became defensive. Still largely rude and argumentative towards one another, Dreuer slowly built up a hatred towards anyone who wanted to hurt this actual sad wet cat boy.

I think the penny dropped for Astarion when Dreuer stood up for him against Raphael in Act 2, and wasted no time and asked no questions in the hunt for Cazador.

Astarion is his asshole baby brother and if you hurt that vampire, be prepared to get fucked on by the wrath of Bhaal.

Gale - He had him at “unwelcome insertion in the occular region”. Dreuer didn’t actually understand that what he was feeling was a big stupid schoolgirl crush until it was painfully obvious, but it was there from the start.

Things were obviously slower for Gale. I mean, he was going through his own post breakup trauma, he had a lot to unpack.

Basically for a long time they annoyed everyone by being so obviously and clearly in love and yet so totally oblivious that there was a betting pool going to see how long it would take them to figure it out.

Their love language is bickering over obscure topics and being very gentle with each other because dear god they both deserve some kind, romantic love.

Lae’zel - Dreuer was largely ambivalent to his githyanki friend at first. She was a soldier doing what soldiers do.

He slept with her in act 1 when he was trying to figure out what sort of person he was, but realised very quickly that he is absolutely not the hookup kind of guy.

Their relationship turned slightly competitive, killing counts exchanged between them and occasional night time ambushes going on so that each of them could prove they were better than the other.

Gale found this very very annoying.

He misses her while she fights in the astral plane, and any note from her is treated with love and care.

Wyll - this boy is smol. A fellow warlock, a sweet baby. That’s Dreuer’s son. He’s what, four years old? Pick your sword up kid, it’s sparring time.

Dreuer, while thinking Wyll’s gallantry is admirable, doesn’t really think it’s worth it. He usually plays along though because for the love of god Wyll needs a father figure who is proud of him.

They have taught one another a lot, and will continue to do so.

Karlach - if Wyll is his adoptive son, Karlach is his daughter. As big and scary as she is he sees her sensitive side, her enthusiasm, her joy and her vivacity as things to be treasured (and envies her for them, slightly).

I’m fairly sure if Wyll hadn’t gone to Acernus with her, Dreuer would have left Gale waiting in Waterdeep to travel with and protect her. His own desires would be secondary to keeping her safe.

Halsin - a fellow old soul, an important friend and confidante. Halsin is a force of nature and Dreuer respects that greatly. It was healing for Dreuer to see people like Halsin and Karlach being such ferocious creatures while still harbouring a sensitivity and kindness.

It gave him hope.

Jaheira - excuse me that’s his mother. He is her little cub. Her Bhaalspawn son.

If there is one thing Dreuer is in desperate need of, it’s a parental figure to reassure him and support him. Someone to keep him on the right path when he’s on the road to doing some deranged shit (because we can’t trust Gale, he’s probably into that deranged shit).

There is undoubtedly no one Dreuer trusts more than Jaheira.

Minsc and Boo - … yes. They are also here.

He likes Minsc and Boo but… he can’t really vibe with them. So their relationship was very “acquaintances and then, goodbye to you.”

Due to his fervent desire to ruin Ilias, he possesses the exclusive ability to fragmentise souls which inflicts an infinite amount on them without allowing the souls to move on (apart from chronovens, The Caretaker and The Artiste)

Background: Born to a family of mechanics, Zeki grew up to be a mechanic stationed in the empire's capital. He participated in the constant revolts calling for an end to the empire's bloody rule, even leading in some with the help of the Tenth Dullahan's resources. Amidst the news of Ilias starting an uprising against the empire in 1681, Zeki met a woman at one of the revolts who had a passion for history and often told him historical facts as though she had witnessed it firsthand. He fell head over heels for her and asked her out six months after their first meeting, proposing to her two years later

Three years into their marriage, Zeki walked in on her lamenting about how even if the empire wouldn't eventually fall, she would outlive him and their friends to a humanoid that comprised of blinding galaxies. He wanted to give her privacy, but accidentally tripped over a bucket which alerted them of his presence. Aware that he was caught, he asked his wife what exactly the humanoid was and how did they meet. Reluctantly, his wife revealed that both she and the humanoid were chronovens, former humans that were granted the ability to use cosmic magic, a certain branch of time magic that allowed her to see past, present, and future events, and live for an extended period of time that was equivalent to almost an eternity

Hearing this, Zeki understood why she was able to talk about history as though as she had lived through them and resolved to find a way to live forever so that she had company until the end of her time. He spent years studying on forbidden magic written by Ilias, hoping to find a way to live forever before the empire officially fell as what his wife had foretold

In Dia'ae 1699, the empire's capital was overwhelmed by Ilias' army of skeletons, all harbouring hatred towards the Mekalza Empire. Fearing for his family, he rushed back to his childhood home only to discover their bloodied bodies in the living room. As he cradled his father's limp corpse, one of the skeletons appeared from the kitchen and bludgeoned him till he was nearing death. As his life faded away, his wife appeared and told him to run into hiding the moment he sees the vengeful army

Confused by her words, he could only remember his vision fading into darkness before waking up in the same area that he first saw the army, this time with his wife's necklace around his neck. He was about to run towards his childhood home but a constant fading voice told him to run into hiding, and irritated by the voice, he did just that in a bid to get it to stop. He watched as the capital soon swarmed with skeletons, Ilias announcing its fall days later

Holding out hope that his family and wife were still alive and in hiding, he returned back to his house only to be greeted by damaged and overturned furniture. Reasoning that his wife was safe, he went to check on his parents only to discover that his parents' bloodied bodies remained on the floor, the smell of decay festering the house. Nearby was an unimaginably frail corpse of an old woman, who he cried over as he recognised that to be his wife and understood why her necklace was suddenly on him

The thought of Ilias' uprising resulting in the deaths of his loved ones enraged him, and clutching onto the necklace, he desperately wished to go back in time and kill Ilias before he became immortal even if it meant that he might not be born

As the necklace glowed, seemingly acceding to his wish, Zeki suddenly felt as though he was burnt alive and the right side of his head was being split open. While he was in pain, his left eye felt as though he was branded, and didn’t notice himself breaking up and reforming in a galaxy

After an eternity, he was approached by the same humanoid he caught his wife conversing with, except this time, he could easily make out her features and she wasn't painful to look at. She soon introduced herself as Nina of the Fourth Hour, one of the existing chronovens. Zeki proceeded to demand what happened to him, with the latter explaining that he underwent the process of becoming a chronoven

He then asked if his new existence meant that he could go back in time to kill Ilias, to which Nina answered that wasn't possible. When asked why, she explained that in order to reverse time like what he wanted, it meant giving up his existence as he was using his lifespan to reverse time. Moreover, even if he were to kill Ilias, the empire would've still fallen at some point and it was likely that Zeki's fate would’ve remained unchanged

Dissatisfied with the answer, he then asked if he could go back in time to save his loved ones. Nina reminded him that chronovens could only reverse time, and that came at the cost of their lifespans. She also explained that even if he were to do so, he would be unable to stop his wife from saving him as her existence was considered gone from time itself and only those close to her would remember that she ever existed

Nina then explained that Zeki had an exclusive chronoven ability related to him, quickly adding that if Zeki abused it, she would get Salvatore to lock his abilities to prevent too much imbalance in the world. Furious by the lack of action he could take, he stormed off with the memory of his loved ones as well as the promise to exact revenge on Ilias on his mind…

When the Chosen sent my thralls to retrieve the Prism - who do you think let the 'Emperor' slip its leash, knowing it would be the one to bring you to me? The Emperor: We were part of its plan... The Netherbrain: I only needed one Netherstone loosened from the Chosen's grasp to guarantee my freedom. You have brought all three back to me. In doing so, you have liberated me. This was your role - and it is complete. Now you will witness the Grand Design.

I'm definitely going to have to hunt down the brain when I hit Moonrise in my current run, I need to see what it has to say to Durge beyond my current understanding of "things that make people think Durge fucked that brain." It's also great that the Emperor (who very much is doing his utmost to use the party to get his way) was just another pawn in the brain's plot. Also: it's interesting that the Netherbrain says Durge only became a pawn in its design after they got tadpoled given it also essentially says that the Chosen of the Dead Three were its pawns from the start (just pawns permitted to believe they were in charge). So was Durge an exception to that? It does say it respected them. I doubt it saw them as an equal or anything like that, but they may have been at least something above "pawn" in its eyes.

I also do wonder what the brain would've done with the party if they hadn't immediately kicked its ass and dumped it in the harbour. I mean, it can't (or won't) immediately kill or transform them and it talks about them witnessing the Grand Design it means to inflict on the world; did it just intend to... keep them around? Or was it going to get rid of them at some point once the Grand Design was well and truly underway? Probably it wouldn't have kept them around forever, but I don't know what it actually would've... done.

La nouă ani de la posesia sa, amintirile lui Josh Lambert despre experiența sa din The Further au fost reprimate. El este divorțat de soția sa Renai, iar mama sa Lorraine a murit recent. Relația lui cu fiul său Dalton a devenit tensionată, iar el încearcă să vindece lucrurile dintre ei în timp ce îl lasă la facultate, dar se termină cu ei într-o ceartă.

La prima sa clasă de artă, Dalton ajunge să deseneze o imagine cu ușa roșie folosită pentru a intra în The Further. Cu Dalton prins în bârlogul său, demonul îi posedă trupul și încearcă să-l omoare pe Chris, dar este oprit când Josh reușește să-l găsească și să-l elibereze pe Dalton. Demonul îi urmărește prin ușa roșie și Josh rămâne în urmă pentru a o ține închisă, astfel încât Dalton să fie în siguranță, Dalton se întoarce la corpul său și pictează peste pictura roșie a ușii cu vopsea neagră, care, la rândul său, sigilează ușa adevărată și The Further permanent.

Josh întâlnește spiritul tatălui său, care îl călăuzește înapoi în lumea vie. Odată întors, Josh acceptă să ia cina cu Renai și copiii, sugerând o posibilă reuniune. În timp ce pleacă, întâlnește, fără să știe, spiritul Elisei, care îi spune că are un viitor strălucit în față.
