"Pictures drawn in blood link decades of legacies of people who have been imprisoned and tortured by Israeli guards. A hidden archive of poems, letters, drawings, and handmade objects—containing stories of resistance, messages of despair, and hope—amass behind prison walls. Throughout each resounds a pulsing call for freedom.

I asked my uncle about the first piece of art he produced. "It's not easy to handle where to start, but what I can tell is that Palestinian detainees inscribe their emotions and resist through crafts," he said.

Sometimes prisoners draw on handkerchiefs, or embroider different symbols of life and hope: broken chains, olive branches, white pigeons, Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Dome of the Rock.

Khader showed me what he painted in 1995 in the Asqalan prison as a gift to my mother because he couldn't celebrate her graduation with her. In the piece, a white pigeon holds a letter as it flies to Rafah—my uncle's city. The letter frame is colored blue and red.

"I always used blue in my art," Khader explained. "It reminds me of the blue, wide sky—the sky I couldn't feel for years in prison..."

With all this potential to create, if those detained were free, what creative inventions would they contribute to humanity? How many stories would be released?

"I think I produced more than 100 pieces [while detained]" Uncle Khader said with pride.

Amazed and excited, I asked Khader to show me more handmade art. Suddenly, the conversation changed. His voice faded, his smile disappeared, and his eyes shrunk a little. The wrinkles of age and sorrow were clearly painted on his face.

"Israeli bulldozers entirely demolished our old home in 2004. You were only three years and don't remember. There, under the rubble, I lost all my photos, memories, and handicrafts —the ones I made and the ones my detained friends gifted me after release."

Israel chases Palestinian crafts inside and outside prison. They fear our art. They fear our memories."

Small Disclaimer :

I'm not an expert on Tolkien's work/world. I've only seen the movies/series.

But, I'm currently reading The Silmarillion, and even though I love it so much so far, this is the hardest book I have ever read 😵‍💫 Not sure I get all the story right, but I'm doing my best to understand everything ✨️

This is why my OC is more based on the movies/series than the books. Well, only until my knowledges on Tolkien's books get stronger 💪🏻

I will also make a Rings of Power timeline that will be different from her original one from The Silmarillion. I know a lot of people don't like this series (and I can understand why since I'm reading The Silmarillion), but I personally like the series as it is: Inspired by Tolkien's work and not a direct adaptation.

Where does dithering work best when doing environmental pixel art?

I’m generally not a fan of dithering. Like, look at the game jam version of my game, OverBite:

You might see parts of this and say, “Oh I see dithering on those bricks” but that’s not dithering, that’s texture. There’s a difference.

Essentially, dithering is meant for when you have a limited color palette and have to make something look “soft.” And by that I mean, like, a soft shadow.

The thing is, a lot of sprites don’t have very soft shadows. Let’s take this backdrop from Pocket Fighter for example.

Let’s zoom in.

The supports for this sign are supposed to be shiny, so you get this hard, solid edge on the right and as things move in to shadow across the left side of the pole, you get maybe two pixels worth of dithering per strip of color.

That’s because, for a high contrast reflection like that, you wouldn’t get much softness.

But where you do get a lot of dithering is in the clouds, because these clouds are soft and wispy.

Dithering is not a style, dithering is a tool to make up for a limited color palette. You use dithering when you need to show very similar colors being blended together because you want to portray a softness that would not otherwise be possible.

Generally, what we think of as “pixel art” is from the 8 and 16-bit eras, which means obeying color limits. A lot of SNES, Genesis, and even some PS1 games limit sprites to having between 12-16 individual colors. The system may have a wide range of colors available, but only 16 are displayed on an animated character at the same time. So, you dither when you need to transcend that limit.

Unless you are super strict in obeying this rule, it’s okay if you do not dither.

However, that 16-color rule can important in building effective color palettes. It makes you think about contrast and highlights in a way you might not normally. Limitations foster creativity, and that’s how art happens.

At the same time, when I make sprites for games, I use 16 colors as my baseline, but it’s okay if I massage things a little bit when I think it’s truly necessary. 18 colors is fine. 23 colors is fine. Starting with 16 colors is there to keep myself in check, so I don’t go overboard and end up with a sprite that uses 100+ colors. Being able to use colors unrestricted is how you develop bad habits like pillowshading, where you just add shadows on top of shadows on top of shadows.

Limiting colors also makes animation easier, because it's easier to stay consistent as a character moves.

But, like... pixel art is just... art that uses pixels. Look at Astal on the Saturn.

The backgrounds are hand-drawn artwork and the character sprites have nearly 40 colors. Pixel art is not about dithering! What about Heartforth Alicia?

Do you see any dithering? Not really, right? If you're willing to go nuts and put in the work to have big, beautiful, lavishly detailed pixel art, nobody is going to stop you. Just don't get in over your head. Heartforth Alicia had been in development for many years. Pixel art is not easy just because it is low resolution.

Anyway, this big, rambling post hopefully gave you some food for thought, whether you do or do not decide to use dithering in a pixel art project.
