"Survived anotha year! Mānawatia a Matariki!"
OOC// Today marks the first day of Matariki, the Māori New Year in the traditional lunar calendar. Also James's birthday (I don't like Waitangi day so I changed it)
Matariki is a celebration commemorating a time of joy, remembrance and peace. Traditionally Māori use the stars (or as legend refers to them as 'sisters') to judge times of harvesting crops, the star that shone the brightest out of the 9 would signal which harvest would be most plentiful. Iwi and whānau across Aotearoa celebrate in different ways, whether it be cooking harvested crops as an offering to the stars for the bounties received that year, or simply coming together to celebrate as a community.
It's a celebration honoring those who have passed yet also looking towards to the future, accepting that it's a time acknowledge the dead and to release their spirits to become stars. It was also a time to reflect, to be thankful to the gods for the harvest, to feast and to share the bounty of the harvest with family and friends.
In 2022, the New Zealand government officially declared Matariki a public holiday, making this the first time in history it is nationally recognized and celebrated as it became more common for both Māori and Pākehā to celebrate Matariki.
To all the people of Aotearoa and beyond, Happy Matariki! - Jack of @asknzmate
