hihi pia! youve said before that you like to leave a lot of the visuals up to the readers imagination with what you write, but i thought to ask can you explain maybe the layour of garys cottage? 😭😭 im so bad with stuff like orientation and space, and i struggle so much sometimes when i read and think ok, now where is that door they came from and where is that chair next to the table and that window. rereading the teacup incident & i just really cant make it work. its fine if not. ily!
Anon, very unfortunately, I am not an architect, and I just spent 30 minutes trying to draw this out which has highlighted to me that I know what the layout is but my job is actually writing and not...drawing the layouts of homes. (If only)
You can always just look up cosy cottages and then use that, anon!
The job of a reader (imho) isn't to imagine things exactly as they are, but go from the details they've been given and often relate that back to what they already know. Sometimes that might mean looking something up if it's genuinely something you've never seen before (karri trees), or relating them back to a tall tree you're familiar with (sequoias). In fact no reader imagines the same thing when they're reading. I could spend 1000 words describing a red cabinet and people will imagine 1000 slightly different variations anyway. Everyone has a different idea of 'red' and a different idea of 'wood' and a different idea of 'cabinet' and even if I lock down into the nitty gritty, if we're not living in the same country, our power sockets look different, our heating and cooling systems (and accommodations for them) are different, the fabrics we use are different (unless we all go to IKEA), the smells of the home are all slightly different.
I think even if I did draw it out successfully in two hours (which is not time I really have spare at the moment :/ I wish I did because I think it could be fun except that I don't want to download architecture software to make an actual blueprint of an entire cottage that's in scale but also shows exactly where the furniture will go which includes interior design as well x.x - and I do know exactly how it's laid out mentally, so I know I could make it work. (And I still might, maybe, but probably not while I have a 15 week old puppy I'm sorry anon D: ) But yeah doing it on paper has proven to me that actually writing out the location of like 50 different things means the blueprint becomes too small and messy to still tell what's going on. I wrote 'table and chairs' over the table and chairs and now you can no longer see the table and chairs in my sketch which is not useful!
There's a difference between the layout of a house and the layout of the objects and furniture in a house. I may have worked for an architecture firm, but I am not a house designer. *cries*
But! All you really need to know is that Gary can't see the kitchen cabinets from where he sits on the couch. Which means if someone crouches down and opens the cabinets, he can't see them either. There are a lot of houses that have layouts like this, especially houses that have a counter not just up against the wall, but in the middle of the kitchen.
For example in this image, if a couch was in front of the kitchen counter that's free-standing, and a person was sitting on the couch and looked at the free-standing kitchen counter, they would not be able to see the kitchen cabinets from the free standing kitchen counter, or what's in them. They can only see the counter. If the lounge was lower than the kitchen, they'd see even less.
Tumblr media
In this image, if the couch was where the stairs are, you'd not be able to see what Efnisien was doing in the kitchen at all until he stoop and held up the teacup. If he kept the teacup low in his hands, you'd not be able to see it at all.
Tumblr media
Because Gary's cottage is small, but open plan, the lounge has a view to the kitchen, but not directly into the kitchen.
There's lots of houses that feature this kind of architecture, so if you really want to go down that rabbit hole, you can just search different kitchens in cottages until you see one where if you sit on the couch, you can't see someone crouched in front of the kitchen cabinets.
Gary's free-standing kitchen counter is also multi-level like this is multi-level:
Tumblr media
So someone could stand there and make a coffee and a person sitting on the couch wouldn't be able to see what they were doing. Ornaments and vases and notes etc. can go on the raised bit, and kitchen stuff can happen on the lower bit.
Ah marvel at my use of technical terms *cries again*
Anyway! I hope that helps somewhat. I'm mad that I can't draw this layout for you because I do wish I could just...mentally take people on a tour through this cottage. And it would be great to do that. But I am looking at the saddest most pathetic sketch in my sketchpad right now, and I used to work as an artist, but I'm just very very very very bad at this kind of technical drawing.
But maybe the teacup scene will make a little more sense now :)

Just remembered the old ask pia ikea blog. Considering you used to run the ask pia ikea tumblr, I've been wondering what you think of the rise in popularity with the Blahaj in recent years.
I think any reason to have a cuddly smooth shark in the home is a good one. I just wish Ikea would also offer a cute little aquarium-esque box for them to live in.

About farewell and reunion
27.11.2023
Ahoj everybody!:D
The last weeks have definitely been very exciting for me - in every kind of way - and I feel like especially this time it helps me a lot to put my thoughts down in words. So let’s talk about November and its ups and downs.
Everything began with a very spontaneous decision on my part. On a random Friday evening, little Laila thought: “I think it’s time to get a piercing” – okay to be fair - it wasn’t that spontaneous. I had actually thought about getting a piercing for a while but you know how it is with such “bigger” decisions. You first ask many of your friends for their opinions, because you want to make sure that you make the right decision. Then you think about whether you really want to do it and when there is the right time to do it. Later you are on the verge of doing it, only to then back out again, because suddenly you are not sure anymore if it’s really the right decision and so you continue to delay the implementation. Well, at least that’s how it went in my case.;D
But on that Friday the spiral of thoughts took an end and I finally made my way to a Tattoo studio in the city centre. They gave me an appointment for the next day and even though I was like “Okay, that’s already tomorrow” I said yes, and honestly that was the best thing I could do because I didn’t give myself the chance to think about my decision another week. The next morning I was –positively- nervous on my way to the appointment but then everything happened very quickly. After marking the spot (I think I asked the piercer 5 times for a different placement before we had the one I liked ;D) the piercing was done straight away and it definitely hurt less than expected. I left the studio as a new person (no, of course not!;D) but was for sure super happy with the result and also simply proud that I had the courage to do it. So here is a little reminder for you to be brave and above all, if you find something beautiful about yourself or want to change your look in a certain way or whatever, please don't listen to what others tell you. If you like it then go for it because literally you only live once. ;)
The next weekend Maren and I went to Praha again to visit our friends Teri, Ella, Juli and Pia. To give you a short form about the three days. On Friday we had a lovely evening with self-made sushi and the BEST chocolate muffins by Pia before we headed to the centre to go into a bar, where you could buy Aperol spritz ON TAP for only 50 crowns!! After a few drinks, we went to the biggest club in Europe, the “Karlovy Lázně”. Unpopular opinion: I think the music on some floors was great but all in all I don’t really understand the hype, because the drinks were very expensive, some floors were way too crowded and I think that there are definitely more authentic clubs in Prague. But feel free to contradict me if you see it completely differently. ;D
The next day we didn’t really know what to do, but we were sure that we didn’t want another tourist trip through the city and so we spontaneously made our way to IKEA, which was definitely the BEST idea because not only did we win small prizes on a wheel of fortune, but we were also able to eat freshly baked cinnamon rolls for free (I hadn’t known that the kitchens in the IKEA really work, how cool is that?!). I also have to mention that some of us really needed something for our household. That’s why the visit was actually very important, okay?! ;D
After we came back from our trip we stayed at home, cooked dinner together, and had long talks about life before ending the evening with a movie night. It definitely felt a bit like a sleepover from school times and I enjoyed every second of it for sure.
On Sunday morning Teresa made her delicious palačinky for breakfast and after that, it was already time to say goodbye but all of us knew that it definitely wasn’t the last time we would meet. After what felt like a sprint to the train station because our tram was canceled and we had to take a later connection, Maren and I made it to our platform at the very last minute. I think I’ve never run so fast to get to the train station!!
The ride to Plzeň was kind of different this time which had probably something to do with the fact that it was the last time coming “home“ together with Maren. On that Sunday we not only came back to Plzeň but Maren also prepared to set off on her journey home. I helped her with putting all her stuff into the car and then it was time to say goodbye- and I can remember how I only really realized it on my way back to Bolevec.
That new situation was definitely not easy at all. Maren felt like the closest person I had here since I had known her from day 1. She became a very good friend to me and at the same time that let me realize that our close friendship would help us to stay in contact. There is this German quote that says “You always meet twice in your life” and I just knew that this would happen in our case too. <3
And, what can I say? It didn’t take us long to make it happen. Only two weeks later we met again on a trip to Dresden – I mean it wasn’t a coincidence because we literally planned it together but still it was so nice to implement what we promised ourselves: to keep in touch and to meet again. Indeed Maren wasn’t the only one I saw again. We were a group of 5: Maren and I, Pia and Juli from Praha and my twin sister (I think it's the first time I'm mentioning her;D), whom I hadn’t seen for almost three months. Of course, we had some Facetime calls during that time and always told each other our biggest news and funny stories and so on but it was something completely different to finally be able to hug her again.
The weekend was characterized by many lovely conversations, funny moments, interesting city tours as well as good food and much more. But above all, it was a weekend in which I simply felt comfortable and at ease in the group. I didn’t know that new people could feel so familiar after such a short time and I’m once again simply grateful to have them in my life. <3
But of course, my life right now is more than just weekend trips and spontaneous decisions in my free time. Most of the time I’m actually in the office, preparing for the next German and English classes, editing a conversational video for our YouTube channel or joking around with my colleagues and of course also writing for this blog.;)
I have slowly developed a routine and so far everything is going very well and most importantly, I’m having fun. It’s so nice to get creative while preparing the topics for the conversation and at the same time I enjoy every break from sitting in front of my computer, whether it’s in the dancing classes with Adeto, the baking sessions with Mirka or the tours through the forest with Kuba and the ladies from my Nordic Walking group. I'm already looking forward to the coming weeks and especially the Christmas activities in TOTEM.
And one more thing about November: it ended with another very nice event, namely that my sister, my brother, my dad, my uncle and my cousin came to visit me on the last weekend of this month. What sounds like a bigger group also felt like it and to be honest, being together with 4 men is not that easy haha! Gladly I had my sister and I have to admit that the company of the others was not only challenging but above all very funny and nice. ;D
On Friday we watched an ice hockey match of HC Škoda Plzeň before having a BIG dinner in the restaurant “U Mansfelda”, where the men even ordered a second portion of “smažený sýr s tatarskou omáčkou a hranolky” and a lot of “pivo”. ;)
The following day I guided them around the city centre, we visited the Christmas market on the Náměstí Republiky and then it even started to snow. I also showed them one of my favourite cafés in Plzeň, the „Schovaná kavárna“ and we ended the day with a funny board game evening at home.
On Sunday we took a walk through the forest in Bolevec and then headed to the centre to get a guided tour through the city’s underground. It was so interesting to learn more about the history of Plzeň that I hadn’t known that much before.
After that, I already had to say goodbye to my family and I cannot say that it was very easy for me but it definitely helped me to know that I would already see them again at the end of December...
... And so a very eventful and nice but also emotional and by farewell marked month came to an end.
I'm so grateful for all the people I got to know and the ones I had the opportunity to meet again. Thank you for making my stay here -both at work and in my free time- so exciting and beautiful! <3

Even though my month began with a farewell, it concluded with a series of reunions, which have shown me that a “goodbye” can also become a “see you again”.
That also applies to this blog, where I will be back with new stories at the end of December.
With this in mind, I say "Čau" and see you next time!
Laila :)

Hi! Oolong tea, Hibiscus tea, & Hot chocolate? 💛🤗
2. Oolong tea: Which book series could you read again?
Uhh, I don’t think I have read that many book series, so pretty much any of them XD (I feel like I could read Harry Potter anytime. Always when I wanted to reread a certain part, I got stuck with that book for hours.). Also, Anne of Green Gables. She was the absolute heroine of my childhood and her fantasy and resilience inspire me all my life.
16. Hibiscus tea: What is a song you can always hear?
A lot of songs! Let’s say Jermaine Jackson & Pia Zadora - When the Rain Begins to Fall, I love that one, such a charge of energy!! I don’t hear it that often but it always makes me happy when I do :)
24. Hot chocolate: Do you have (a) stuffed animal(s) sitting in your room? Which one(s)?
In my bed, I have a white cat named Candy for some reason :D that my mum gave me. Above the bed on the shelf, there’s two white mice (in my family, I have a nickname that sounds like “a mouse” or some diminutive of it. One of those names you’re not even sure how you got them but everyone calls me that for years XD Might have something to do with my love for a certain cartoon when I was a little girl^^)
Then there is a stuffed Nessie that my aunt has brought us from her trip to Scotland, and some big stuffed vegetables from IKEA 😂 the carrot has such a cute face^^
Thank you so much for the ask!! 💜

18 Ways Real People Had Their Dream Weddings For $5,000 Or Less

18 Ways Real People Had Their Dream Weddings For $5,000 Or Less
You don’t need to break the bank to have the best day ever.

What do you do when 8 couples have baller weddings for under $5,000 (one even maxed out at $500!)?

You ask them to teach you their ways.
Here are a few little tricks and tips they swear by…
1. Have a free reception in a national park.

Couple Tera and Mike applied for a free permit and had their ceremony in the middle of the mountains in Mount Baker in Snoqualmie National Forest, WA.
2. Set up corn hole!

Or Bocci…or beer pong. Games are a cheap gift that keeps on giving (especially as people get drunker).
3. Look for a liquor store that lets you return unopened booze.

In certain states, you can return unopened alcohol to Sam’s Club and Costco. Do a little research and see if you can get hooked up.
4. Go all out on Baby’s Breath.

Anna Beth of the Hello, Anna Beth blog remembers her moment of floral truth: “I want babies breath,” I told Jennie Ann. “Ok, and what else?” she responded. “Umm…more babies breath?” So that is what I got. Lots of babies breath.
5. When in doubt: Etsy!

You can buy rings, stationary, vintage favors, and just about everything else without getting completely sucked into the wedding industry wormhole.
6. Get creative with paper flowers.

Love is a Big Deal / Via greenweddingshoes.com
They are perfect for bookworm weddings, they don’t need water, and guests can tear off a petal and jot down numbers of potential hook-ups.
7. Hire music students to play the ceremony.

Contact the music department at local colleges or universities to see if their students play events. They cost less than professional musicians and will bring some life to the party.
8. Ask a friend to make a cake instead of giving a gift.

I had the greatest dream. There was a whole playlist on YouTube of Ask Ikea Pony songs. Some were made from clips of a fully fledged animation (like the pia ikea ooo song, where someone took clips of her sliding around an old ski lodge at night on her hooves saying ooo and remixed it into a song) I might have heard one song, all I know is the main song was at the top of the playlist. I was looking at it at my grandmas house. I felt the same kind of lazy I do now but, like I'd accomplished something really special in the past

18 Ways Real People Had Their Dream Weddings For $5,000 Or Less
