I listen intently to music and lyrics through sound cancelling headphones while conceptualizing a piece to help open up my imagination, conjure ideas and stimulate my creativity. Music plays an important role in how each one manifests and often they are titled after the song that inspired them. This 2014 assemblage 'I Want to Hold the Hand Inside You' (14" x 13" x 6", Sold) is particularly special because it’s song is "Fade into You" of favorite band Mazzy Star from their second album, So Tonight That I Might See (1993). It was also the first work of mine that was purchased by who would go on to become my biggest collector. He now owns a dozen or more of my pieces and we are dear friends. Since I am stuck in a leg brace for awhile unable to get into my studio and create new work just yet, I am sharing some of my favorite pieces from past years. This assemblage is titled Southern Gothic after a genre of acoustic-based alternative rock and Americana music that combines elements of traditional country, folk, blues, and gospel, often with dark lyrical subject matter. Characteristics of Southern Gothic include the presence of irrational and transgressive thoughts, desires, and impulses, dark humor, and an overall angst-ridden sense of alienation .
