Council Deputies vs Politics

A few basic quests later, at the Council’s chambers

Whiny Asshole: There’s three gems missing?

Smarmy Dude: The Soraks could have them. They’re obviously after the crown, since they keep attacking you.

Whiny Asshole: We can’t send something so powerful out with a bunch of lunatics who camp in the Badlands for a living! We should take it and secure it!

Astrid: ...wut?!? I ... but...

Jallira: That ... is ... unwise and very medically contraindicated, as we’ve seen firsthand that ... well...

Alisaie: --that she’d die if you took it from her, you fucking assholes!

Mychae: Good to see you still remember some actual profanity.

Officious Lady: Surely you’re not against sacrifice for the greater good...

Mychae: If I thought you people were ‘the greater good’, sure. All I’ve seen so far is you trying to score political points off each other. Despite this group supposed to be being neutral. You bitch and complain and twist things to your advantage and you send us out to do your dirty work. You risk our lives every day and now you’re taking back the one damn thing you did that was in our interests instead of your own. Even the street thugs I hung out with as a kid did their hirelings better than that.

Helpful Paladin: Why don’t we take a day to think this over? Let cooler heads - and consciences - prevail.

Council Meeting: *breaks up with grumbling*

Heddon Surespell: Erm ... how about crashing at the tavern tonight? Might do you some good!

Mychae: You coming on to me, dude?

Heddon: Well ... I could be ... though honestly, all four of you would be a bit much.

Astrid: Alisaie would probably break you anyway. No, but seriously, why?

Heddon: Reasons. *voom*

Mychae: Sooooooo ... comfy beds, decent food, and clean everything? Or the tavern?

Alisaie: I’m voting for the tavern. We could check in on Arwin.

Mychae: How much do we trust Heddon? That’s the real question.

Jallira: This is why I am recommending the tavern. You have to learn to trust people sometime.

In the wee small hours

Functionary: I regret to inform you that your rooms on palace grounds are inaccessible because of a bunch of Sorak infiltrators ransacking the place. It is very good that you weren’t there.

Alisaie; Astrid; Jallira; Mychae: *staaaaaaaaaare up at Heddon’s usual spot*

Heddon: *quietly toasts them*

Jallira: Is it my turn to finally have an ‘I told you so’?

Mychae: ..............Fine. Fine. But just this once.

Later, Council reconvenes

Whiny Asshole: We should keep the crown somewhere safe! I don’t care if one little adventurer dies!

Smarmy Dude: At least somewhere with more guards than four adventurers, however formidable those adventurers happen to be.

Officious Lady: We’ll put it to a vote. Senior Councillors only, please.

Alisaie; Astrid; Jallira; Mychae: *are not senior Councillors*

Alisaie; Astrid; Jallira; Mychae: *are thus not able to have the remotest say in Astrid’s fate*

Officious Lady; Whiny Asshole; Smarmy Dude: *all vote to take the crown off the person it might kill to do so*

Helpful Paladin; Fairly Quiet Arcaneum Dude: *vote to let Astrid keep it so she doesn’t fucking die*

In-Charge Lady: Very well. We’ll keep it in the Temple of Einar.

Whiny Asshole: Here in Caer Cyflen? So this country gets the benefits of the power? What happened to political neutrality of the Legacy Council?!?

Helpful Paladin: We may have a temple here, but we follow Einar’s laws above any nation’s. We’re neutral. Like this whole Council is supposed to be. But then, this Council is supposed to help protect its people too, and look what you’re doing to one of them--

Officious Lady: You’re a skilled paladin with all manner of healing arts, and she travels with a cleric of Maraike; I’m sure you can manage something without killing the girl or hurting her too much.

Helpful Paladin: Wow, are you ever missing the point.

Whiny Asshole: Exactly! Geographic considerations are still a factor in where the Crown is and--

In-Charge Lady: Enough! Let’s get this done before these fine adventurers do something ill-advised.

Alisaie: ...what, like murdering the whole bunch of you and getting gone before you can hurt my friend?

In-Charge Lady: Pretty much, yes.

Jallira: Just let me brace myself. I will not let my friend die if I can help it.

Astrid: If ... if this doesn’t work out--

Mychae: It’ll work out fine. If it doesn’t, we’ll beat the cost of the resurrection diamond out of somebody’s hide, I’m sure.

Some while later

Astrid: *did not die*

Mychae: How’re you feeling?

Astrid: I think the attunement didn’t actually break. I still feel it.

Helpful Paladin: Well. That explains why keeping you alive was so relatively easy.

Jallira: It really didn’t want to be away from you, though. This ... I’m not naturally a suspicious person, but isn’t this ... a bit...?

Mychae: Fishy as fuck, yes. Please guard the crown well. I start getting worried about infiltration when things get this fishy. Reminds me too much of Coparann.

Harlan Summer: Um ... actually, you could be right. This is all a bit second-hand, but there may well be some of those cultists rallying for infiltration over at Earcorn.

Mychae: .........Someone named a town that?!?

Jallira: It’s on the map; just-- *sigh* Thank you, Harlan. We’ll look into it.

On the way out of town

Arwin: They took the crown, huh?

Astrid: I guess it did kind of stand out, didn’t it.

Arwin: Look, that donkey-piss at the inn doesn’t actually get anybody really drunk. I’ve been watching people in this town for a decade. People have been getting shifty as fuck, and it’s been getting worse just recently. I’m pretty sure we’re being infiltrated. At some pretty high levels, given what they did to you.

Jallira: Well, we’re on our way to check out a lead on a cultist den in Earcorn.

Arwin: It doesn’t half pay you back for the remorhaz thing, but fuck it; if you four newbies could be heroic, I can at least be support. I track pretty well, as it happens.

Mychae: You were damn good the last time. I’m game. Let’s do it.

Earcorn

Mychae: It doesn’t have a tavern. That’s just wrong.

Arwin: What’s wrong is that these footprints have indentations for claws.

Alisaie: Soraks, huh? Well, let’s make sure they don’t get far-- oh fig.

Mychae: You’re doing it again; it’s oh-- *looks* ...........fuck.

Soraks: *are arranged en masse*

Earcorn: *is obviously a trap*

Arwin: Wow. Somebody reeeeeeeally wants you dead.

Alisaie: I am going to find Harlan Summer and I am going to make him eat his own entrails.

Astrid: Ew! ...Jallira, you usually back me up on this kind of thing...

Jallira: Maraike is a god of death as well as life and at this point, too many of my friends have been threatened by horrible people so I may well help.

Mychae: Ooooooh Jallira’s pissed; that’s always fun.
