What is TEF Language Test?
Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) is one of the international benchmark tests that evaluate proficiency and knowledge of the French language.
TEF has been used as a French language test for immigration to Canada for a long time already. Some educational institutions in Canada accept TEF results from international students as proof of language skills.
TEF test sessions are held around the year in various testing centers. These centers are responsible for the session dates as well as providing the candidates with registration period and fee structure. The registration deadlines are at least a week before the date of the test. It is best to apply and register early so that there’s enough time for all the paperwork to be processed within the given time.
You don’t need any prior qualifications or degrees to appear in a TEF test. You must, however, be at least 16 years of age or above to apply. For registration, you’ll need to present the following documents:
• Photocopy of your official ID card (including passport, driver’s license, and other such documents;
• A recent photograph along with the signature;
• In case that your testing center doesn’t take your photograph on the test date, you will also be required to present a form of photo identification;
• Personal information form that you fill out at the time of registration.

Could you please explain a bit about la laicite and French politics? I'm really struggling to understand and I would appreciate perspective from someone more educated (and imo trustworthy) than some other online sources
I’m not French & there are no doubt people who are much more well-informed on the subject than I am--the long & short of it is that laïcité is a constitutional principle in France originally / ostensibly intended to keep the influence of the Catholic Church out of government (& conversely, to prohibit the government from e.g. setting a state religion) dating from at least 1905 but with conceptual roots that go back earlier
laïcité was not "intended” to be anti-clerical or to allow the government to interfere with or prohibit free expression or practice of religion, & proponents of the concept will tell you that this is indeed the case in practice. however, the concept of laïcité does not rest solely on a political separation of church and state, but also relies on the belief that there should be a strict separation between the private sphere (to which religious practice ought to be confined) and the public sphere (where people should be devoid of markers of religion & should function politically as “equal” citizens without gender, race, ethnicity, or faith). this concept of separation of identity from “civil” or political personhood of course borrows heavily from racialised histories and concepts of “citizenship,” as well as, like, Enlightenment rationalism
so how this concept ties into things like “colorblind racism,” & to the idea very common in French discourse that merely mentioning race in any capacity is in fact racist (because it punctures the idea that race is a “personal” issue with no political relevance), is easy to see. it’s also easy to see how the concept is intended (some people would say the concept is “abused,” but given the history of France’s colonial empire I think this is short-sighted) to banish people of colour & Muslims from public discourse entirely. the people who are thought to be “without” markers of race & religion are, of course, white. this is the context in which laïcité is used as justification for banning the wearing of the veil in France, in which police force women who wear the veil to effectively strip in public, in which a member of Macron’s party asked a veiled woman to leave the room because her mere presence would have violated “le principe de laïcité auquel doit s'astreindre notre assemblée” ("the principle of secularism to which our assembly must adhere,” my translation), in which the interior minister complains about how the mere existence of halal & kosher sections in supermarkets or of college courses on race, gender, and sexuality “contribute[s] to ‘communitarianism’, ‘separatism’ and ultimately Islamist terror.” anyone who’s been on this earth for longer than approximately three days should be able to tell you that anything banning public expressions of religion in France would be selectively applied to Muslims, Jewish people, people mistaken for Muslims, &c.
the historical & present context that gives rise to this concept of laïcité is of course France’s colonial relationship with Algeria. France has been forcibly de-veiling Algerian women to take photos for government ID cards for over a century (so you can see the connexion between “citizenship” and “lack of ethnic marker” very clearly here. any photograph of an Algerian, or other North African, woman you see during this period is likely to have been taken in this context, or else for a staged Orientalist postcard, & you shouldn’t share or repost it). this history + France’s defeat at the hands of Algeria in the Algerian War of Independence + the conception of laïcité as being intended to bolster a nationalist conception of the French state against religious “threat” + a high population of Muslim immigrants in France due to France’s colonialist pillaging and theft from ( / nuclear weapons testing on) those countries = the racist, Islamophobic, antisemitic nature of “laïcité” to-day. a U.S.-based or Anglo understanding of "secularism" is neither relevant in nor sufficient to understanding any of this.

The 2004 law banning headscarves and other conspicuous religious symbols in schools appears to be protecting laïcité. However, laïcité prescribes that the State has no role in religion and guarantees the free exercise of religion. Therefore, the imposition of the French state in determining what clothing is religious and what is not presents the state playing a role in the religion, which seemingly goes against the strict separation of religion and state laid out in laïcité.

Food for thought
At last week's Data Bites, I noted how 'Wales' is a standard unit of area. This week, along comes a map which shows that all the built-up land in the UK is equivalent to one Wales:
The map is from the National Food Strategy, published yesterday (and the man has a point).
It has divided opinion, judging by the responses to this tweet. I understand where the sceptics are coming from - at first glance, it may be confusing, given Wales isn't actually entirely built up, Cornwall made of peat, or Shetland that close to the mainland (or home to all the UK's golf courses). And I'm often critical of people using maps just because the data is geographical in some way, when a different, non-map visualisation would be better.
But I actually think this one works. Using a familiar geography to represent areas given over to particular land use might help us grasp it more readily (urban areas = size of Wales, beef and lamb pastures = more of the country than anything else). It's also clear that a huge amount of overseas land is needed to feed the UK, too.
The map has grabbed people's attention and got them talking, which is no bad thing. And it tells the main stories I suspect its creators wanted to. In other words, it's made those messages... land.

Happy Take Out The Trash Day!
Yesterday saw A LOT of things published by Cabinet Office - data on special advisers, correspondence with parliamentarians, public bodies and major projects to name but a few, and the small matter of the new plans outlining departmental priorities and how their performance will be measured.
It's great that government is publishing this stuff. It's less great that too much of it still involves data being published in PDFs not spreadsheets. And it's even less great that the ignoble tradition of Take Out The Trash Day continues, for all the reasons here (written yesterday) and here (written in 2017).
I know this isn't (necessarily) deliberate, and it's a lot of good people working very hard to get things finished before the summer (as my 2017 piece acknowledges). And it's good to see government being transparent.
But it's 2021, for crying out loud. The data collection should be easier. The use of this data in government should be more widespread to begin with.
We should expect better.
