Get Ready For The Changeling (2023)
Tumblr media
If you are looking for a good mystery show that is both exciting and eye-opening, then you must add The Changeling to your watch list. The Changeling is a fantasy fairy tale for grown-ups and young adults. An outstanding horror story for a parenthood tale and a dangerous odyssey taking place through an alternate New York that you didn’t know existed. Starring Clark Backo and LaKeith Stanfield, the story revolves around the fairy tale of Apollo and Emma’s love story. This drama and fantasy movie is set in an alternate world New York City where Apollo Kagwa’s father mysteriously disappears, and his son is only left with a box of books and strange recurring dreams that haunt his life. Now as a father himself, Apollo settles into his brand new life, with his wife Emma, as they take on new roles as parents. They settle into their new home; however, Emma is shown to be going through some deeply disturbing trouble. Emma seems to be showing signs of postpartum depression shortly after the birth of their child. In this erringly tense show, Apollo as a husband and as a father, finds it his duty to do anything he can to help his wife, Emma. Surprisingly, the suspense does not end there! Emma commits a horrifying act after the birth of their firstborn child and then suddenly vanishes from Apollo’s life. The Changeling Takes Apollo on a terrifying quest to find his missing wife. The biggest problem is that Apollo has no idea what he has gotten himself into and his search is nothing like he would have imagined. Mysteriously, this dangerous and death-defying odyssey takes him to some forgotten island in the middle of New York City’s East River. This Changeling Is based on the award-winning novel The Changeling and is set to release on the 8th of September this year. The show will release the first 3 episodes when it premieres and will continue to release weekly episodes until the end of October 2023. The show will have a total of 8 episodes and will make its debut on Apple TV. Read the full article

The Changeling by Victor Lavalle
Not sure how it ended up happening, but I’ve been on a very bizarre fiction kick recently. First Kafka, and now The Changeling, a story about Apollo Kagwa’s life. From when his parents met, to his childhood, romance, and then the disaster which becomes our title. It’s hard to discuss this book without spoilers, so Spoilers ahead.
Apollo’s wife becomes convinced that their son is no longer their son, and has been taken. She is driven mad by this, and by everyone else’s dismissal, and kills the creature that has replaced her son. Given that no one else has seen anything wrong with the baby, even Apollo, this is largely regarded as murder. Turns out though, she was right. Apollo is involved in a plot of witches and modern priests appeasing a monster, as he tries to become a good father and husband again.
It’s a terrifying and uncomfortable story, but the wrappings are kind. Apollo wants to be a good dad, better than his. The world is dangerous and terrible, and you can’t really insulate yourself completely from someone who wants to come in, especially with a bit of tech knowledge. But that doesn’t make life unlivable. It is just much harder. Also, there is the permanent theme of love as a destructive force, one which comes back again and again and again. It’s well done, but good fucking luck explaining what you’re reading to anyone.

Quote
A dentist's office across the street kept mass-market paperbacks for its patrons, and she convinced the old woman at the front desk to give the old copies to her instead of throwing them away. These were romances and thrillers, mostly, true crime thrived. Lillian Kagwa didn't vet the volumes, just plopped them into a plastic bag and took them home on the 7 train. So Apollo read Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me, The Wayward Heiress by Blanche Chenier and Dragon by Clive Cussler when he was way too young to understand them. Nevertheless, he finished each one. Unsupervised reading is a blessing, for a certain kind of child.

The Changeling by Victor LaValle is a story about Apollo Kagwa's journey through a new and bizarre New York.  After an unexpected and traumatizing event involving his child and wife, he desperately needs answers.
Read some of my thoughts about the book under the cut!
This book is a part of my spooky reads of 2020, and I was looking forward to reading one of LaValle’s books since I saw his name in many horror lists.
First of all, Apollo likes books, and it's always easier to empathize with a character that shares this common interest. The first part of the story that describes Apollo's mother bringing him all the magazines and books, and he's devouring them and reselling them is very cozy. It's the beginner of what will be his future job, and at this part, I couldn't see where the story was heading. The other main character, Emma, also likes books. She's a librarian, and I think she had my heart when she said she loved Brazilian movies! And she also learned Portuguese and came to Brazil! I was fascinated by this digression and by her journey before getting married to Apollo.
In general, the book feels like a twisted and very dark fairy-tale, and the overall horror is - except for the quick traumatizing event - atmospheric until the end. I enjoyed all the creepy vibes of the book, the weird little things that happen, the unexpected "villain" and all the story behind. In the end, we get to see more gore (that I, as a horror fan, love it) and solutions to problems that come out straight from a fairy-tale.
The thing that I didn't enjoy much is that I thought it was a very, very slow-paced book. The first part deals with Apollo's mother's life, Apollo as a kid, Apollo meeting Emma. It adds some creepy details mentioned later, but I wondered if some events described were relevant to the story and the real "horror" takes longer to start. When the traumatizing event happens, it's quick, and it doesn't show much of the process that led Emma to do what she did (that I would have loved to read). Then, the pace goes back to slow.
For the most part, I loved the book! I think it's a horror that relies mostly on atmosphere, creepiness, and the main character's journey to discover what is behind the very bizarre mystery. I can see myself rereading it because it feels very adventurous. I'd recommend it if you like atmospheric horror but also if you want an adventure with bizarre things or a dark fairy-tale!
