Hi! I’m BlackBurrie (Apollo) and I’m a second-generation Korean American artist. I’m trying new things with my art and trying to survive college and beyond. My biggest goal is to fully develop my magical girl series called Project MAGICK. I love vivid colors, anything magical, and my friends.
Nice to meet you, BlackBurrie! They have shared some of their art pieces below for you all.

Day 14 of my Hair Journal was painting during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI).
I reached out to Professor Wayne Quilliam who specialized in photography of Aboriginal people (who works with the Aboriginal people and gets permission to photograph them) and he gave me permission to reference his photography for my portrait.
https://aboriginal.photography/
For the background, I referenced the traditional Aboriginal Dot Painting.
I always find it so interesting to paint people from all over the world. Though I bet traveling and doing it in person would be far more interesting than from my little Hobbit Hole.
Still... I really enjoyed it.

Like any other group, Asians and Asian Americans obviously have their own conflicts. But they're taught to invest in external ideologies that hurt them as a path to "progress." This month, as we celebrate Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, we recognize and honor the contributions of the Native Hawaiian, Samoan, and other Polynesian peoples to our marine conservation approaches. These traditions are at the very heart of who we are and what we do as the National Marine Sanctuary System.

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
As we pay tribute to the generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have contributed to the history, culture, and achievements of the US, let’s also take this time to raise awareness about the ongoing hate crimes against the AAPI communities. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the US has seen a startling increase in harassment and discrimination against the AAPI communities.
Discover from AAPI Equity Alliance (AAPI Equity), #HATEISAVIRUS, National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), and National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) on how you can help to combat racism against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

This was so fun! Thank you again to Taylor for your vision. (And yes, the 2nd photo features my beloved iPhone 5s.)
Repost Taylor Emrey: “Independent curator Jenny Lam (artistsonthelam) for HuffPost’s Culture Shifters series by writer Yue Li. While I am always so grateful to the people I get to photograph, sometimes it’s refreshing to work on something that’s a little more positive.
Jenny was so game for my ideas on a frigid Chicago day. Be sure to check out her curation work and her show at Harold Washington Library this month!”
On display in my Chicago Public Library exhibition are photographs I took on the aforementioned phone!

How Artists of the Asian Diaspora Are Drawing on Traditions from Their Heritage
Across various mediums, contemporary artists from the Asian and Pacific Islander diaspora draw on traditional art techniques. From Kashmiri embroidery to Native Hawaiian kapa to Indigenous Filipino banig weaving, new generations are not only embracing and preserving these legacies, but also expanding the artistic possibilities of these methods.
While today, these cultural practices are frequently celebrated, for some, it has been a protracted struggle to have their traditions recognized as legitimate.
For Artsy, I highlight five artists whose practices are influenced by traditional techniques.

Meet the Artist: @joshualunacreations
Hi, I’m Joshua and I’m a professional comic book writer and artist. I co-created three series at Image comics: Ultra, Girls, and The Sword. After I went solo with my Image series Whispers, I started making online comic strips exploring my Filipino/Asian American identity and experiences. What began as a side project and organic outlet to process my thoughts and feelings turned into a seven-year journey that continues to this day. The more I write and draw, the more I realize I have to say—especially with the sharp increase in anti-Asian violence against AAPI and the institutional censorship that prevents us from addressing it adequately. I was told by my publisher that I wasn’t talking about AAPI issues in the “right way” because I tackle difficult, complex, and painful truths about Asian America. Despite these barriers, I’m determined to collect these strips into a book and publish them as Americanizasian. In the meantime, you can follow and share my work online and support me by pledging to my Patreon or donating to my PayPal. Happy APAHM!
Pleased to meet you, Joshua! He has shared some of his comics below for you all.

Happy #AAPIHeritageMonth! This self-care kit for Asian Americans applies all year round (and maybe even for years to come). The post in this link analyzes how Asian men are being hidden in anti-Asian hate crime data. It’s unbelievable that this is even happening and allowed to continue. This next post analyzes how journalists are part of the problem (including Asian journalists who uphold and defend racist white-controlled platforms/institutions). (Please don’t repost or edit my art. Reblogs are always appreciated.) If you enjoy my comics, please pledge to my Patreon or donate to my Paypal. I lost my publisher for trying to publish these strips, so your support keeps me going until I can find a new publisher/lit agenthttps://twitter.com/Joshua_Luna/status/1134522555744866304 https://patreon.com/joshualuna https://www.paypal.com/paypalme2/JoshuaLunaComics

She waded into her dissertation first with tempered optimism, and then as the years dragged on, with increasing despair, until her research consisted primarily of scratching and sniffing at herself. . . Writing her dissertation . . . was like waking up in a doorless, windowless room without knowing how she'd gotten inside.
