Tumblr media
It was clear Ao'nung was your favorite amongst the Sully siblings. It wasn't said that he never picked on you, but he rarely did it. After all, you're the eldest siblings of the family, which meant your also older than him.
He respects you of course, more than he respects your younger brother, Neteyam.
It was then he grew some sort of admiration towards you, and the situation turned into a blossoming romance between you two. He has seen the way you act differently towards him as well, you were more soft spoken and casual, rather than stoic and fierce.
It was as if he met another version of you when he managed to befriend you. Since you were just a year older, you treat him as if he was some disobedient child when you get the chance. Whenever he's messing around, you'd be the one scolding him and such.
He'd never go against your words though. It would be like playing with fire.
The boy noticed how you acted more like your mother, you were fierce and responsible on the outside, but in the inside you were actually shy and a softie. Imagine his reaction when he saw you get flustered over his words for the first time.
He was in awe, I tell you.
Greatmother, he was so smitten for you. Absolutely head over heels It drove him insane. He even went to his sister once to help him with his feelings, and Tsireya was just as surprised as he was.
He was planning on telling you his feelings soon, but he felt that it wasn't the right time yet. But as he lost his chance, time had gone thin.
"Where are you going?!" Ao'nung harshly grabs your hand as you tried swimming away with your Ilu. Kiri had justed used some weird reef telekinesis earlier to save all your lives, but your mind was on the battlefield.
"To fight!"
Ao'nung sneered at you words, shaking his head. "You can't go out there! Didn't you see what they had as weapons!? You'll be killed!" He hisses, his grip on your forearm tightening.
"I'm fighting for my brothers and sisters, Ao'nung. I was born to fight! This isn't my first battle." You tell him, trying to jerk off his hold on your hand. He let's out a frustrated breath, brows furrowing.
He hesitantly soften his hold on your arm, and you neared him as he did so. Your hand comes up to his cheek, forcing him to look at you. "I'll be back, okay? I promise." You softly spoke.
He watched as you dived down into the water with your Ilu, eyes brimming with irritated tears. Rotxo comes from behind him, grasping his shoulders. "She'll be alright, mate. (name) is a strong girl."
You emerged from the water with a quick breath, ordering your Ilu to swim faster ad you neared the attack scene. There was so much going on, not to mention Lo'ak's tulkun literally slaughtering the people inside the small boats.
Your breath hitched as an Ikran drops from a rock beside you, aiming a spear at the animal until you saw the familiar patterns and colors of the creature. "Mother." You sighed. The woman shouts your name, hastily yelling at you to come on.
You did as you were told, biting your lip as your feet scrapped on the sharp edges of the rocks. Your mother immediately gets back to flight, barely missing the boat that was being thrown onto the rock.
Your fist tightly held your bow has you aimed on the unprotected sky-people, shooting your arrow at one. You grunted as you hear bullets being shot at your direction, and you turned to see the same Avatar from back home.
Neytiri recklessly dodged the shots, and you aimed a spear from the Metkayina clan at him. Your father then emerged from the water, shooting at the Avatar as your spear was sharply thrown at the demon-blooded's Ikran.
The Ikran falls down into the water with a pained hiss, along with the demon-blooded who bonded with it. You let out a yell at your actions, grinning from ear to ear as your mother does the same.
"Mother, fly by that boat!" You instructed your mother, pointing at the said transportation. She immediately does a sharp turn, hastily flying to the boat.
You dropped down at the thick metal right after your mother hands you your bow, surprising the three as you saw your brother already helping them. "Big sister!" Tuktirey let's out a cry, you simply smiled at her as you brought out the sharp knife from your waist-trainer.
"You okay there, bro?" You asked Lo'ak, watching as he rolls his eyes. "Who is the mighty warrior?" You hear Neteyam tease the boy, Lo'ak scoffs, but doesn't hide his obvious smile.
"Come on! Let's not waste time." You scolded the two as they laughed together, hitting the back of their heads as they let out a yelp. Neteyam grabs your hand as you two tried to jump from the boat, but you see Lo'ak at the corner of your eyes go the opposite way.
"Lo'ak!" You hiss. You ran towards him, tugging on Neteyam's hands as he looked at you, confused.
"They have spider, we have to get him." He tells you. You furrowed your brows together, unsure of what to do. He slowly stands back up, obviously serious of what he's saying. "Come on you two, we can't just leave him!" He complains.
Neteyam looks at you, and you groaned in annoyance. "Fine! Skxawng." You sneered, grabbing your bow harshly that it could practically break. Lo'ak grins at your agreement, and you you followed after him into the boat.
You carefully leaded the way as you now had an eye on where spider was. You aimed your bow at a man, shooting immediately when you had a clear path on his head. The sky-people watching spider let's out a yell, and immediately your brothers dropped down, attacking them.
You hung your bow on your back, grabbing the arrow your used to shoot the man in the head as you sharply drew in through the nearest sky people beside you before they could shoot at your brothers.
You grabbed another one by the neck, standing up straight and pulling him up with all your strength, basing his head onto the metal railings on top of you as you head the breaking of glass from his mask.
Grabbing your knife from your waist-trainer, you spot another human struggling to reach his gun. You pushed Lo'ak away as you used your strength and threw the knife at him, watching as the blade jabbed his chest. Lo'ak looks at you, surprised.
You breathed heavily, scowling as you watched a grin form on his face. "You should teach me that move sometime."
"First, we got out of here. M'kay?" You sneered passively. You grabbed his forearm as you dragged him with you, following Neteyam as he heads the way.
You hopped down from the short staircase, watching as Spider does the same. "Thanks guys." The human says. You waved your hand at him dismissively, your eyes scanning the area. Lo'ak spots another demon blood, and raises his gun.
"No!" You yelled. You let out a hiss as you feel a bullet shoot through your hand, making you instantly grab Lo'ak and drag him to the nearest corner to take cover. Neteyam followed right after, watching the bullets hit the metal railings.
"Give me that!" Neteyam grabs the gun from Lo'ak, reloading it as he pulls the trigger, carelessly shooting everywhere. "Go jump in the water!" You told the two boys. They looked at you hesitantly, and you sneered. "Goddamn it, hurry!" You growled.
They instantly jumped down, and your hastily grabbed the gun from Neteyam. "Let's go!" You yelled. He goes after Lo'ak, jumping in. You let out nervous breaths, your ear twitching as you hear the footsteps nearing your direction.
You took big steps forward, running towards the water and diving in. A stinging pain swelled up in your chest, but before you could let out a pained yell, you dropped into the water.
Hurriedly swimming back into the surface, you watched as your brothers celebrate their escape. Tsireya arrives with her Ilu, instructing you four to get on. Neteyam glanced at you as he notices you struggling to swim, his smile dropping.
"(name)—?"
His eyes then lingered at the blood seeping the water near you, and his heart dropped at the sight. "Shit!, (name)–" He jumped from the Ilu, swimming towards you as you struggled to keep your head above water.
"Oh no." Tsireya gasps, gaze on the bloodied water.
"Hold her up!" Neteyam hisses at spider as he placed your body on top of the girls ilu. You growled and slapped Spider's hand away, but then choked when your hand pressed against your chest.
"It's okay, sister. I've got you, okay? D-dont close your eyes." Lo'ak says, stuttering over his words. "S—skxawng. Why would I do that." You hissed harshly, your voice wavering as you struggled to breathe for air.
"Let's go!"
"But— they have Kiri and Tuk." Tsireya speaks up. Your ear twitched at her sentence, you kept a hand on your chest as Neteyam does the same, his hand over yours while he applied pressure.
"Just breathe, sister." Neteyam softly said, his voice wobbling.
Your brother leads the Ilu towards a rock, spotting your father. "Dad! Dad, help!" Lo'ak shouts. They carefully carried your body as they placed you on the rock, careful not to hit your head. Tsireya sobbed at the sight of your bloodied torso, shutting her eyes.
"Father—" You spoke up, your blurring eyes seeing the figure of your father next to you.
"Shhh," he turns your body over, seeing that the bullet had completely went though your chest. He mutters a cuss as you wheezed for air, coughing and choking as your lungs tightened up from the struggling.
He gestured over Neteyam, grabbing his hands as he instructed the boy to put pressure on your chest. Your brother does as he was told, and you yelled at the feeling of the pressure.
You sobbed at the aching sensations swirling through your chest, eyes blinking the tears collecting in your eyes as it refused to fall from your cheeks. Your mother the arrives after hearing your yell from a small distance, eyes widening at the sight of your blood on your brothers hands.
"No! No, no, (name), don't do this." She let's out a cry, kneeling down beside you. "My sweet girl.." neytiri sobs at your cries, your chest heaving as the pressure Neteyam was putting on your chest only made the feeling worst.
"Ma—"
Neytiri sharply inhales at your call, her big hands grasping your own as she let's the sensation of your hands caress her cheek, "Yes, ma child? Speak to me."
"I'm sorry." She shakes her head at your words, breaking down. "I'm so sorry, mother— I let you down." You heaved for air desperately, watching as your mother sobs harshly.
"No, child. It's gonna be okay, I'm here for you. We're all here—"
"(name)?" Tsireya turned at the sound of her brother's voice. She let's out a tight exhale as she stood up, walking towards her brother as she immediately engulfed him into an embrace.
Ao'nung walks away from his sisters embrace, walking towards you. He kneels beside you, eyes scanning your face as he watches the trails of previous tears make wet patterns on your face. "Ao'nung." You coughed up.
"Shit, just breathe, okay? You're gonna be fine— you're fine," Ao'nung continued to convince himself that as he placed a hand on top of Neteyams hand when he saw the bloodied wound. You shake your head with a tired sigh, blinking repeatedly as it was already hard to keep your eyes open.
You smiled at him before your last breath slipped from your mouth, your struggled breathing halting as your choking seized. Neteyam snapped his attention to your face, seeing how you've completely gone cold. Ao'nungs hand twitched as he feels your chest stop beating, blinking repeatedly.
Neytiri cries out in anguish, the palm of her hand touching your face as she cradled your head. "My child!" She exclaims, bringing your head up to her chest as you didn't move a muscle.
Ao'nung's breath trembled as his hand slipped from your skin, looking at the light from your eyes disappear, and it was replaced with a blank, empty gaze. "No."
Tsireya sobbed at his words, watching as he shakes his head repeatedly. "No, (name), you can't do this to me." His voice trembled as he hicced, sniffing harshly. "You promised!" He yells, his voice loud and clear despite your mother's cries.
Tsireye looks down as her brother leaned against her, his head on her shoulder as he sobbed on her shoulder. "She lied."
"Im sorry, brother." Tsireya sympathetically spoke up, wiping her tears as she wrapped her arms around her sobbing brother, feeling his shoulders shake from his trembling cries. "She promised me, Tsireya. She promised to come back." Ao'nung harshly breaths.
Your father looks at the two upon hearing Ao'nung's words, sighing as he embraced his wife was she continued to cry out for you, begging for Eywa to bring you back.
"I didn't get to tell her." Tsireya hushed her brother, cradling him against her as she took in his sobs.

Uh-oh! I think you're holding the heart of mine!
Synopsis ! You should have known better than to love someone so cruel.
Content and warning: Ao'nung x Reader! Ao'nung is a mean IDIOT, his friends too. BULLIES >:[ he comes around tho (2.6k words of angst to comfort hahah)
Tumblr media
You’ve been in love with Ao’nung since you were little kids, always trailing behind like a second shadow and mimicking even the smallest gestures. To you, he was the sun; so bright and achingly alluring, but like the sun, he was cruel— oh so cruel. He’d burn you every chance he gets and you’d take it willingly, grateful for even the slightest touch of warmth.
You never took it to heart. Never. This was a challenge that you’ve accepted with great pride thinking that you could crack his mean demeanor; you were convinced that the reason he had this seemingly tough exterior was because he was future clan leader— of course he needed to be strong. It would be bad for his image to falter, let alone to a girl who held no title whatsoever. You were nobody.
Tsireya would say otherwise. though. She was your number one supporter; always urging you to do better and to continue with your cute antics towards his brother. She knows you’d be great for him— heck, you were the only one she deemed suitable for Ao’nung. How could she not think so? You were a great hunter, always quick on your feet and vigilant. On top of that, you were resilient. You never knew when to give up.
You were believed to have been loved, regardless of his very actions. You remember crying to Tsireya one afternoon, showing her the graze on your forearm. The sight of it alarmed her— anything bloodied, even in the smallest of form would worry any kid so she rushed you to her mother.
Ronal cooed while she tended to your wound and you unconsciously poured your heart out about how Ao’nung had pushed you harshly down the sand, scraping your skin on scattered rocks in the process. His friends had laughed at you, pointing their fingers to your fragile form, cowering.
“Maybe he’s being aggressive because he likes you back!” Tsireya reasons, oblivious to what really was the case— but you were only kids, rough housing and games like these were normal so you didn’t know any better either. You wiped your runny nose and took a deep breath.
“You really think so?” and still you were hopeful.
Tsireya nodded enthusiastically, taking your hands near her chest. Ronal softly smiled, rubbing your back in soothing circles. “I’m sorry about Ao’nung, ma __. I’ll be sure to give him a good scolding later when he gets home.”
“And who knows, maybe he does like you. Boys just don’t like to talk about their feelings.” What Ronal said only burned your hopes higher— encouraging your heart to push for a longer run.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t always like this. You and him were best of friends, inseparable and kind. You were a trio along with Tsireya and you absolutely loved spending time with them; swimming, exploring the ocean– being kids. Ever since, you knew he was the one, almost like it was the great mother’s own will. The feelings blossomed every spent time with him and you cherished it wholeheartedly.
“You should eat plenty so that you grow up to be strong, Ao’nung!” You’d force bits of fish near his lips, urging him to open up. He was throwing a tantrum after being scolded by Ronal, arms tightly crossed and refusing to eat anything. “I don’t want a lanky mate!”
And of course it had been a joke. You’d love him regardless of what he looked like and you knew it, but it was so forward of you and it would always catch him off guard. His cheeks would burn bright red and he’d turn into a stuttering mess.
“Mate?” He asked incredulously which you returned with an eager nod. ”That’s grown up talk! Don’t say things like that until we’re older.”
“You’re gonna have so many pretty children!” Tsireya would comment and you both would squeal, oblivious to the frantic young boy.
After he had started to train, Ao’nung was naturally introduced to other warriors. He fit in perfectly. As much as you were happy for him, that was also when things took a turn and before you know it, it was only you and Tsireya left.
Ao’nung thought that what you had for him would be harmless– a silly crush your young heart couldn’t comprehend yet, but you had now grown into a fine woman and the said love had developed just as much. The people weren’t blind to see how you’ve matured so beautifully– but the men your age knew better than to even try to talk to you. Everyone knew you had eyes for Ao’nung and him only, and the way he grew himself had women dote for him.
It drove him crazy; the sly comments, the lingering touch, the gifts– your very presence. He didn’t know how to handle it, so when his heart beat turned frantic everytime, he’d call it frustration. How his face would burn, how his chest would tighten. Ao’nung was conflicted and his mother was right– boys don’t like to talk about their feelings and he never will.
He’d push you away harshly. Snapping the countless bracelets you’ve carefully crafted for him, embarrassing you regardless of eyes watching, and belittled you any chance he gets. Every woman would cry there and then, immediately running off in embarrassment– but you stayed everytime and it infuriated him. Ao’nung couldn’t shake you off, even if you weren’t around. You were everywhere he went, even in dreams.
You sat with him as he sharpened his fishing spear, not even sparing a glance at your presence. “Oel ngati kameie, Ao’nung.”
The silence didn’t falter you. In fact, it was inviting you to continue. You were surprised he hadn’t even got up to leave so you gratefully took the opportunity and handed him a present wrapped in leaves. He dropped his weapon and begrudgingly took it, opening it in one go.
It was a pretty tie with various beads along the strings. His hair was sometimes unruly and he disliked braiding it, so you figured you’d make him something to wear. For a minute, he stared, admiring it– but the way your smile grew every second had embarrassed him. Ao’nung snickered, throwing it carelessly on the ground and you immediately scrambled to look for it.
“I’m not interested.” He emphasized every word as if he tried to make you understand, harshly kicking the sand towards your kneeling body. Ao’nung left and you could only stare with a sigh.
So maybe this time, you were to blame. After all the years he’d push you away, embarrass you in front of his friends, you were still the same stupid shell of a girl who thought he had finally changed– he had finally cracked and you were confident. It was afternoon when they approached you, asking for your presence while they hunted further the reefs. Ao’nung had asked you– Ao’nung.
Nothing else mattered, not even the obvious snickers from the background. You nodded enthusiastically, tripping on your heels as you hurriedly ran back home to get ready. They had already mounted their Ilu when you returned and without a word, you followed them.
So maybe this time, you were to blame. You should’ve known better than to be so trusting– so gullible and naive. Night was approaching quickly and Ao’nung or any of his friends were nowhere to be seen. The thrashing waves would unmercifully shove your small body on the very rock that helped you keep afloat, its harsh and sharp edges scratching your skin. The ocean was reprimanding you, you’ve concluded after trying to hold on for hours– the blame was yours and yours only. Stupid, stupid girl.
They had left you and this time, you knew well enough it had been their intention.
They were laughing back at shore, applauding themselves for a successful prank. You were to return later all disheartened and the sight would be the cherry on top, but Ao’nung grew restless every minute. This was wrong and he knew that well.
His friends had already bid their goodbyes but he stood there, waiting. He started to walk in circles while fidgeting his fingers– something was wrong. Perhaps it was a sibling thing for Tsireya to start feeling uneasy as well, so she excused herself from her mother and seeked for his brother. It wasn’t hard to find him and when she did, her panic only worsened as she approached him.
“What’s wrong, brother?” Tsireya asked, eyebrows knitted together.
“__” He immediately answered, “__ is outside the reef.”
Tonowari and a few warriors immediately ventured out to search for you. Tsireya couldn't even be enraged at his brother as she was busy worrying herself– but Ronal was a different case. She had been biting his ear off the very moment he told her what happened but Ao’nung easily tuned her out, only hearing his rapid heartbeat.
It felt like forever, but the moment his father had returned, he ran towards him straight away. There you were, a warrior propping you up gently as you limped. You were bloodied and out of breath– he winced at the cuts coating your skin. Before he could even approach you, you had flinched.
The look you gave him made him shudder. It was so unlike you to look at him differently, so empty and void of any admiration. Suddenly, his throat was awfully parched and he was entirely unmoving– all the apologies that were begging to be spat out from the tip of his tongue, gone. You stood there, staring with your teary doe eyes.
His presence made you nauseous and you would’ve cowered in instinct, if not for the warrior’s hold on your shoulders. You could’ve died– you almost did; you were already slipping and numb.
Your parents had immediately ran to you, crying as they held you near. They rushed your weary body to Ronal in a heartbeat. The clan spoke in whispers as Tonowari dispersed the growing crowd.
Ao’nung could only watch at your retreating figure. He visibly gulped. This was it, he thought, this was what he wished for.
And it had only hurt him terribly.
Tumblr media
He stayed near the hut regardless and heard how you whimpered– how you’d sniffle and cry. The paste burned against your skin and you couldn’t help but squirm. You felt so ugly, so humiliated and little.
Ronal finally walks out, the sound of the flap waking Ao’nung’s drowsy state. “Mother, how is she?” He receives only a scornful glare as she walks past him.
“Mother, please.”
“I am deeply disappointed in you, Ao’nung” She said, clearly holding back. The tsahik sighed, “but for her sake, I will save you from any more scolding. It is what she asks for.”
And it was so like you to think of him before yourself. It applied more pressure on his already beaten heart and he could only drop his head in shame. This was his fault and he had to face the consequences he so begged for all these years– so where did this sickening desire to hold you close come from? It was bittersweet on his tongue and no water could get rid of the taste.
Tumblr media
“I know that look, brother.” Tsireya didn’t have to glance to see his troubled state. It’s been days– no, weeks. He couldn’t get to you; skilfully blending in with your surroundings and out his sight, scurrying quickly towards another direction– it was clear you wanted nothing to do with him.
It pained him– absolutely shattered him to pieces.
“I can’t reach her, Tsireya.” His frown deepens as he frustratingly tugged on his hair.
“And you will never again!” Ao’nung flinched. As much as Tsireya enjoyed the torment of his brother, she still rooted for the both of you– still standing firm with the fact that you’d do good for him, but she thought of you and knew you also deserved better. With a dejected sigh, she whispers,  “If.. you don’t hurry.”
“Her hideout. Now. Go make things right.” Tsireya hoped she was doing the right thing.
Ao’nung darted in a heartbeat– disrupting the busy clan and accidentally bumping into them. He couldn’t waste any time anymore, he had to get to you or else he’d forever hold his peace. Every step he took was an image of you with someone else; someone else willing to make you happy, someone else to be your mate.
And he hated that. It only fueled him to go faster, eventually reaching a pond surrounded by trees. The place was hidden and only the three of you knew where it was located– it was your safe place.
There you were, relaxed and unknowing. It was cruel like this; for Eywa to strikingly illustrate you in a different light– in a different point of view, or perhaps it had never changed and he just chose to never look at you the way he’s staring now. You were absolutely beautiful, basking in the glow of the dusk. The water swayed you gently and the calm on your face was inviting.
This was his only chance.
Ao’nung approached you, allowing the water to swallow him near you. He called out your name in a whisper and you immediately turned to him in surprise. Before he could even get another word out, you tried to hoist yourself up to escape, but he was quick to grab your wrist.
You hissed in return, his touch burning the healing cuts on your skin. “You don’t get to be sorry.”
You had turned your back on him and only then did he see the same tie that you tried to give him around your hair. It was gut-wrenching– the taste of his own medicine.
“I knew you wanted me off your skin, but I didn’t realize you wanted me gone.” And he knew what you meant, immediately wincing at the thought.
“I’m sorry, __” The apology came out almost in a desperate manner. Ao’nung was aching to touch you– to hug you close. He was willing to apologize forever, if it meant that you’d finally turn around and look at him, but when you did, his body went rigid and he wanted to swallow his words. “Fuck, I’m so sorry.”
You were crying and you looked everywhere but him. He took a step forward and when you didn’t retreat, he took the chance to hold your cheek, caressing it with his thumb. You absolutely hated it– hated him. Even after everything, he was warm. “You don’t get to be sorry.”
“How could you be so,” You hit his chest harshly, the water splashing along your movements, “How could you be so mean?”
“I am young, __” Ao’nung softly said, his eyes on you unmoving. “Young and absolutely stupid.”
“Damn right you are.”
He let out a breathy chuckle. “I never had anyone love me the way you do. Anyone who paid me any mind wanted me for my status– they only wanted the olo'eyktan’s son.”
You turned your head with a click of a tongue, only for him to grab your chin to look at him again. Of course you never wanted him because of his or his parent’s title– you loved him genuinely and he was a coward to not see that. His expression was nothing but sincere and you hated it.
“I am young and stupid, __, so please.” He takes another step forward and you were sure the small gap between your bodies had cut your inability to breathe. The water had gone cold and you couldn’t move. You stayed there, looking up at him. “Let me grow old with you and I promise to be wiser.”
“I see you, __.”

When you had first arrived at Awa'atlu, Ao’nung had pegged you as the silent, strong-willed eldest daughter of the Sully family. During training you only ever kept to yourself, practicing on your own as soon as you mastered whatever technique they were teaching you that day. You weren’t rude, just very stand-offish.
So stand-offish to the point where not even his insults or antics could get a reaction out of you. It drove him mad, really. Your other siblings, save for probably Neteyam, had given him the reaction that he had expected, wanted even. He thrived on attention, be it bad or good – it’s what made him feel confident.
So when you arrived here, paying him no mind, his brain had gone haywire. He tried doing everything he could – jokes, pranks, and hell, even compliments for minor achievements. Those didn’t work, and he was just about to give up on garnering anything out of you until today happened. He hadn’t seen it coming.
Tumblr media
He had spotted you and Kiri by the shore, sitting together as you admired the sand. Ao’nung was aware that this environment was new to you, yet he still found it strange how you always managed to be so entranced by every single thing. He murmured something to his friends, and they snickered at his words.
You turned then, your bright yellow eyes looking at all of them with disinterest. He flashed you a smile and again you did nothing, not even an eye roll. He felt it falter, though he kept it up as soon as your sister lifted herself out of the water.
“Huh? What’d you say?” She asked, her tone so welcomingly friendly.
“Are you some kind of… freak?” He teased, his hands coming up to grab her arm.
“No,” She answered flatly, trying to pull herself out of his grasp.
He waved it around then, as if it were some toy. His friends all laughed at your sister’s hand, treating her like some kind of deformity. You quickly pulled her out of their circle, your face slowly forming a scowl. His eyes widened slightly as he took note of your reaction – success? Not quite, but nearly. He continued on with his antics, hoping that today would finally be the day he got something out of you.
You didn’t understand why Ao’nung was so fixated on treating you and your family like shit. He was a menace, and you honestly couldn’t believe you’d made it this far without retaliating against him. You wanted to yell at them to stop, but you knew that you would only be provoking them.
“Are you sure? I mean, you’re not even real na’vi.” Ao’nung continued, his hand now coming up to pull on your tail.
You yelped, instantly turning to face him. If looks could kill, he would’ve been dead the moment you laid eyes on him. You hated it when strangers touched you without warning, let alone people you hated. Eywa, you wanted nothing more than to smack the entitlement out of this boy. But still you remained silent, opting to just walk away from the situation.
You heard your brothers then, suddenly joining the crowd. Lo’ak guided the both of you further away while Neteyam stopped whatever else was about to fly out of Ao’nung’s mouth. Your scowl remained though, and you kept your death stare focused on him and his circle of idiots.
“And from now on,” Neteyam concluded, his expression just as pissed as yours, if not, even more. “I need you to respect my sisters.”
He made eye-contact with you briefly, and something about the look in his eyes told you that he had no intention of keeping his word. You scowled even deeper.
One of his friends actually had the gall to hiss at your brother, though Ao’nung had made the smart choice of holding him off. Neteyam made his way back to you now, gesturing for you guys to head back to the village. And you were going to– really, you were, but Ao’nung just couldn’t keep his damn mouth shut.
“Look at them, they’re all freaks. Especially quiet girl,” He said, his tone hushed but loud enough for you to still hear. “She’s already a four-fingered freak, what more if she can’t even handle a little tug.”
He had his back turned to you as you stomped angrily towards him, your fist already clenched at your side. His friends had no time to warn him as you angrily jerked his shoulder, making him face you.
“[Y/N] leave it be!” Kiri begged, but it was already too late.
You decked him, hard. He stumbled as he fell, landing straight into the shallow water. He blinked slowly as he regained whatever balance he had left, his hand coming up to caress his cheek. Everyone looked at you in shock. In your entire stay with the Metkayina clan, never did you act out this rashly before. In fact, you never acted out at all.
“Four-fingered freak, you say?” Your tone was taunting him, your tail swinging rapidly as you tried your best to keep yourself at bay. “You mean the freak who just put you on your ass?”
His friends hissed at you, already lunging towards your direction for the insult. They didn’t make it two steps in as your brothers had already stepped in for you, swinging hits left and right. You were pushed out of the way, and you staggered backwards until you were next to Kiri again.
She gave you a look, and though you were older than her it felt like you were the younger one moments away before getting a scolding. In the end you had to pry your brothers away, eventually meeting up with your father by one of the pathways. All of you, except for Kiri, kept your heads bowed as you listened to your father’s words of displeasure.
To say he looked disappointed would be an understatement. He was pissed, yes, but more importantly he was embarrassed. He had asked of you guys one thing, and you had tried so hard to live up to your promise of respect. But today was your last straw.
You could tell your father was torn between having to scold you or let you go with just a warning. He knew now of Ao’nung’s torment, yet he didn’t want to jeapordize the safety the village provided for your family.
Wanting to fix this mess immediately, he walked the three of you to the chief’s marui. You sighed and closed your eyes as you walked, mad at yourself for even escalating this stupid situation in the first place. You had everything under control, but all it took was one tail tug and a few harsh words to have your composure come crashing down.
Tumblr media
Ao’nung leaned on the side of his marui now, watching as you and your brothers apologized for your actions. He held a cloth with medicinal paste against his cheek, his cuts stinging as he continued to dab it on. His mother and father stood beside him, their presence the only thing keeping him from mumbling any more digs at you.
You were the last to speak, and he could tell that you didn’t want to do this. You took a few moments before you finally looked up at him, your eyes filled with such resentment. The hand you had used to give him the bruising wound below his eye was still tightly fisted, your knuckles still red from the amount of force you had used in one blow.
“I am sorry,” You started, so much distaste in your words. “So sorry that I hit you. And I am even more sorry that I put you on your ass.”
Lo’ak snorted quietly, trying to keep quiet so as to not piss your dad off even more. You felt your father nudge your shoulder, and you redid your apology, this time with a little less sarcasm and annoyance.
Ao’nung’s parents sighed heavily as they approved of your words, followed by his father demanding that he apologize as well for his insults. He had tried to protest, but one look from Tonowari was enough to have him muttering a half-assed apology.
You didn’t care, it wasn’t sincere anyway. And even if it were, you had no intention of accepting it. Once all was said and done, you were the first one to go. You walked away, your expression back to its nonchalant one. You held your head up high, no longer hanging it in embarrassment.
Ao’nung had remained in his place, his mind still processing what had happened today. He was successful in his mission, but could it really be a success if he was the one injured? Could it really be a success if your feelings toward him were only momentarily, your stoic persona coming back almost instantly?
Needless to say though, the reaction he got out of you was unexpected. He knew you were tough, your father was Toruk Makto for crying out loud. But he wasn’t ready for your physical retaliation. Even at the beach, he only stared at you as his friends tried to defend him.
He winced again as he remembered the pain on his cheek, the bruised spot feeling incredibly sore. He was thankful that you didn’t aim for his jaw, since that truly would have shut him up for good. He brought his hand up, slightly tapping the tender area. Who would’ve known that a quiet little thing like you had so much power? Not him, clearly.
He continued to stand there, still examining all his injuries. His sister came up to him then, just coming back from wherever she had been. She looked at him, her eyes darting from bruise to bruise. What happened? her gaze said, though he had a feeling she already had an idea of the events that transpired today.
He only brushed her off, turning to walk back inside the pod. She followed after him, persistent in getting answers out of her brother. Tsireya sat in front of him, not leaving her place until he spoke. He gave her a look, but she gave him a look as well in return.
He groaned under his breath and rolled his eyes before he finally told her everything; the teasing, the taunts, the fight, your punch. She put a hand up to her mouth, much like how Lo’ak tried to compress his laughter a while ago. How fitting.
“Are you laughing?” He said, slightly offended that his own sister found his failures funny.
She pressed her lips into a tight line, shaking her head instantly, though he could see her fighting a grin. She put a hand up to his shoulder, patting him lightly as she got up, taking an empty basket with her.
“Oh big brother, just what have you gotten yourself into?” She said, the suppressed laugh from earlier sprinkled in her words. “If [Y/N] didn’t already despise you before, she definitely does now.”
“Why should I care?” He said as he stood, facing his sister with his arms crossed.
“Why should you care?” She turned and parroted his words, eyes wide at how infuriatingly dense Ao’nung was. “Need I remind you that she is the daughter of Toruk Makto, one of the greatest war leaders of our time.”
“She was on the path to becoming Olo’eykte of the Omatikaya,” He was about to interrupt her until she put her hand up, stopping him from saying anything before she finished. “It is not wise to have her as an enemy.”
“So, what, are you saying I should apologize?” He said. “I already did.”
She put a hand on her hip, clearly starting to get frustrated with her older brother. “No, you didn’t. And yes, I am telling you to go apologize to her – truthfully and sincerely this time.”
He wanted to protest against her, but she quickly tossed the basket she was holding to him. “Go now. She will be by the docks gathering materials for her family’s feast tonight.”
“But-” He tried, but Tsireya had already made up her mind in making him go in her place.
“How do you even know where she is?” He asked, his face scrunched up as he reluctantly made his way out of the marui.
“Because unlike you, I don’t treat her like an outcast. And besides, she likes me.” She said, her shoulders shrugging up at the last phrase. She smacked him on the back of his head before he was fully out of the pod, reiterating her words as he continued on his way.
Tumblr media
He found you then, folding dried leaves into your basket. You were right where Tsireya had said you would be, sitting quietly like always. You looked at peace in your solace, your body free of any tension. Your hair was up haphazardly, free from your usual taut braids. The evening breeze had finally come, the sky going from bright blue to muted orange.
He coughed as he made his way towards you, breaking the relaxing solitude you were relishing in. You looked up, still continuing on with whatever you were doing. Your loathing stare was enough to make him fidget in his place before he finally decided to speak up.
“I, uh,” He stuttered. Actually stuttered. He cursed himself mentally before continuing. “I just wanted to say that I am sorry. Again.”
You blinked away boredly, only humming and nodding your head in response. You quickly took your basket with you as you got up, already making your way back to your pod. You didn’t want to be alone with the reef boy any longer, Eywa only knows what you’d do if he dared to provoke you once more.
“[Y/N] wait-” He said, clumsily turning as he grabbed your arm.
You hissed at him, his grip on your arm falling as soon as he saw your reaction. Right, you did not like being touched without warning. He put his arms up, trying to show that he meant no harm.
“Are you not satisfied yet, hm? Does your ego still need to be fed?” You said, eyebrows furrowing as you continued to berate him. “You won! All you wanted was a reaction, right? Well you got it!”
“No!” He argued back, annoyance starting to creep up on him. This was pointless, of course you wouldn’t be willing to accept his apology, let alone be in his presence for more than five minutes. “I am trying to apologize, please just listen-”
“Kalweyaveng,” You muttered under your breath, hand coming up to hold your forehead as you tried to calm your nerves. You had already caused one scene today, you weren’t about to start another. You took a few breaths before you finally faced him again, trying to remain nonchalant as you, aversely, heard him out.
He tried to maintain eye-contact with you, but your stare was just so deep. It felt like you were trying to burn holes into his head the longer he stared at you. You tilted your head to the side, eyebrow raised as you were clearly getting impatient in the ever growing silence.
“Let’s call a truce.” He finally breathed out, his arm already outstretched in your direction. “New beginnings.”
You looked up at him, then down to his arm, then up back to him again. You squinted, unsure if he would be able to stick to his word. Not that it mattered, you were more than capable of handling any situation if he decided to break his vow. But still, a truce was an important promise, and it needed to be held truthfully all throughout.
It was painfully awkward now, his smug demeanor vanishing the longer he stayed quiet. He cursed his sister for setting him up to this, and he cursed himself even more for agreeing. He did not have to do this, he was the chief’s son – next in line for Olo’eyktan. But, regrettably, he knew Tsireya’s words were right. You were a mighty hunter, with a legacy of powerful warriors before you. It really wouldn’t be wise to have you against him.
“Please,” He said, breaking the silence. “I swear to Eywa that I will not break this vow.”
Your ears perked up at this – swearing on the Great Mother meant that someone was serious. You scoffed, huh, he actually meant it. You took his hand then, wrapping your fingers around his forearm as you shook in agreement. Though his hands were rough, they were gentle on you as he took note of your uncomfortableness with strangers.
You never liked the feeling of touch from people you didn’t know, and you still don’t, but Ao’nung’s warmth didn’t feel as bad now than compared to before.
“Truce.” You said, slowly removing your arm away from him.
He grinned. You frowned. He stopped grinning.
He walked with you now, keeping up with your pace. “So, what now, tree girl?” He teased.
You gave him a look as if to say ‘really?’, and he shrugged his shoulders. “I mean, we are friends now, right? I can call you that?”
You stopped, turning to the side to face him. You threw him your heavy basket unexpectedly, and he stumbled back as he tried to catch it without spilling any of the contents.
“Oh yeah, we are friends now, fish lips.” You said, tone laced in sarcasm. “And since we’re friends, you can carry that for me, right?”
You continued on your way then, not waiting for his reply. He watched you for a bit as you walked ahead, and he laughed slightly.
May Eywa bless him with the strength to earn your trust.

SOMEBODY ELSE !
— chapter 17. you.
a/n — all i have to say is fucking finally
series masterlist. | previous / next
Tumblr media
written portion below. —
you sat there anxiously, awaiting a response from neteyam. it had been a little over ten minutes since you sent the text, and while you wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, you know he didn't have any scheduled practice or class today, and was probably on his phone the whole day.
you refused to check your phone anymore, and instead sat on your couch in silence, not bothering to turn on the tv as you knew you wouldn't be able to concentrate.
a sudden knock on the door pulled you out of your nerves, with you silently thanking eywa for the distraction from neteyam once you opened the door.
it proved to not be that much of a distraction, after all.
"neteyam? what are you doing here?"
he was leaning against your doorframe, hair ruffled and clearly was in a hurry. he was wearing his casual sweatpants, and a fitted shirt that hugged his figure just right everywhere—
his voice quickly snapped you out of your trance, with you silently scolding yourself for checking him out at a time like this. "i came over as soon as i saw your text," he panted, wiping the sweat off his forehead. you subtly tilted your head, did he seriously run on his way here? "something was wrong with the elevators so i took the stairs up."
you winced, the thought of running up three flight of stairs would've had you sweating buckets compared to the few droplets coating his forehead.
"i'm so sorry." you blurted suddenly, without thinking, leaving a confused neteyam standing in front of you.
"for the elevator? i mean it's not really like you had control of that—"
"no, i'm sorry it took me so long to reach out. i didn't know you came here to talk that night. ao'nung lied to me and i didn't even find out about it until earlier today."
"oh," he sighed, and what looked like relief washed over his features. "no need to apologize. all that matters is you're ready to talk to me now."
you sent a shy smile his way, opening the door further as an invitation for him to come in. he accepted, walking in and awkwardly standing by one of the barstools in the kitchen.
not wanting to waste any more time, neteyam spoke up. "i should've never accused ao'nung of doing those things. especially doing them to you. i should never have believed violet, i never even really liked her in the first place, if i'm being honest," he chuckled, running a hand through his braids. "she was full of shit, i just— i wouldn't be able to stand it if he was actually like that, and if i knew you were in some sort of trouble with him."
"i get it," you softly spoke, leaning forward onto the counter across from neteyam. "he's not though. and yeah, what he did just now was kind of fucked up, and i practically blew up in his face just now," you paused, laughing at the shocked look on neteyam's face. "but you have to start trusting my judgement. if something bad happens then it happens, and i learn a lesson from that. but you can't control my love life, neteyam."
"you're right," he agreed, not missing a beat. the boy cleared his throat, fingers nervously tapping along the edge of the counter. "i just want what's best for you, you know? and i'm sorry if i come off like a dick sometimes because of it, and i don't even realize, but i swear i'll start trying harder to just leave your problems to you."
you smiled gratefully at him, then furrowing your brows in confusion. "wait, if you didn't even like violet, then why'd you date her?"
neteyam froze in front of you, not knowing how to response. you paused, scared that you overstepped just before he sighed, meeting your eye.
"it's dumb, really. it was a part of lo'ak's stupid plan to get me to move on."
your heart skipped a beat, chest rising up and down with your breaths. "move on from who?" you carefully asked. from what you knew, you were the last person before violet who neteyam had been romantically involved with.
he stilled for a moment, letting your heart soar for just a split second at the mere thought that maybe, just maybe, he felt the same.
"from you."

anger issues
Tumblr media
STARRING. ao'nung x na'vi!reader
CONTAINING. a bit of angst, fluff, established relationship (mates), no use of y/n, living together with ao'nung, time skips
WARNING(S). slight violence, ao'nung having an attitude
WORD COUNT. 2.1k
synopsis: ao'nung's sudden change in attitude ends in a heated argument that lasted for days; cold shoulder, silent treatment, absolutely no interaction between you two. however, he couldn't risk you leave his life the longer you don't talk to each other so he pleads and asks you to give him another chance.
translation: tsakarem - tsahik in training, mawey - calm down, yawne - beloved, marui pod - metkayinan shelter/house, skxawng - moron/idiot
Tumblr media
after your tsakarem shift, helping ao'nung's mother ronal with the injured hunters' from today's hunt. you happily hopped your way to meet ao'nung at the shore in the usual spot, under the shade on the big rock where you two would hang out. your feet shuffled in the sand which immediately caught his attention.
ao'nung looked to you irritated which confused you, "are you okay, ao?" you asked him, cautiously approaching him to place a hand on his shoulder. "get off me! you- freak" he shouted at you, your ears tilted down as you visibly frowned. you retracted your hand quickly, realizing that his anger issues were acting up.
your first instinct was to calm him down so you immediately pulled him into a hug and rubbed his back in comforting circles which calmed for a while, whispering “mawey… mawey, my love.”, before he shoved you to the sand seeming as if calming him wasn't gonna work. you gasped as he raised his fist, "don't touch me-".
you sat on the sand slowly standing up on your feet as you raised your hands to show you meant no harm. "you wouldn't hurt me, ao. i just want to help you. let me help you, love." you said calmly, almost in a hush tone still attempting to calm him down.
"what makes you think i wouldn't? and don't call me that!" he hisses out on you as he tightly clenches his fists at the side of his body, careful not wanting to hurt you, which broke your heart the moment you heard how he didn't want you to call him your love. "i don't care about you- go away!", he shouts in a hiss, but you persisted.
"you care about me, ao. see this? you gave this on my birthday, and confessed. the most precious think you ever crafted for the both of us." you gestured to the matching shell necklace you had just like ao'nung's, giving him a soft smile.
he took a second before yelling "that don't mean shit!", he takes the necklace off your neck, leaving a cut on the side of your neck making you hiss. luckily it was only superficial, gone deeper you would've been dead if it cut through. you widen your eyes in horror as he throws it on the sand, leaving a crack on the shell of your necklace.
you immediately crouch down on your knees, picking up the necklace gently in your hands careful not to break it. "why- how could you?!" your voice getting louder, tears brimming your eyes as you looked up to him.
"because it means nothing! you mean nothing to me!" he huffs. "you! this relationship! and that stupid necklace!" he shouts at you. you immediately stood up to cup his cheek. "that's not true... not true at all!" you try to convince him but he looks away from your eyes. "look at me, ao... look at me, please." you plead him, as he finally looks at you which made you scared seeing your worried reflection through his eyes.
ao'nung pulls away from your touch turning his head sideways, "no. you mean nothing to me." he says each word with hate making you frown as you cup his face again with a hand, "look at me..." you whisper, as tears start to fall onto your cheeks.
he pulls away again, angrily he yells "i said no!" as you notice tears forming in his eyes but he's trying hard to not let it fall. you took it as a sign to still fight, so you hugged him tight. "ao... i know. you're just angry right now. i may not know why, but please. calm down, my love." i say softly. "don't call me that" he hisses, "what don't you get! i feel nothing for you!" he backs away from the hug.
"you're lying... you promised- you promised!" i shouted, my voice breaking. "i did lie! i don't want you! you're such a pathetic freak" he shouts and emphasizes the latter. "i don't care if i look pathetic to you right now, i'm doing my best for us." i say softly, sniffing as my tears keep flowing. he looks away huffing in anger.
"fine. go on and tell me that you don't love me, then i'll leave. say it with hate and make me leave." you hiss out at him to get a reaction.
"go away! leave me alone!" he shouts, his tail twitching in irritation as tears fall from his eyes as he clenches his fists tightly.
you scoff, holding my necklace carefully. walking away from you hurt, every step i took felt like i was giving up but deep inside you slightly felt relieved that he didn't say he didn't love you and just told you to leave.
ao'nung turned to watch you walk away, everything he ever wanted. as he kneeled on the sand to cry, clutching his own matching shell necklace.
Tumblr media
you reach home. your shared home. you and ao'nung's very own marui pod, which, luckily, was approved by both families seeing your unbreakable bond with each other. you immediately head to the master bedroom which was just a more secluded pod that gave privacy than the usual openness a marui pod had.
after placing your necklace on the table, you sat on the bed. you pulled your own emergency kit, grabbing a woven cloth and the little jar of ointment you had incase ao'nung would have injuries from a hunt. you skillfully treat your neck despite not seeing it, sticking the woven cloth above the ointment. your ears perk up.
ao'nung head straight to the you two's bedroom, he stood by the doorway. visibly frowning, you looked away from him as you felt he slowly stepped near you. he kneeled on both knees and grabbed your hands gently pleading you to look at him. "my love...?" he softly says to you, almost in a whisper tone. you can see him slowly start to cry when you decide to finally look at him, seeing him breaks your heart.
you slightly roll your eyes at the sight, eyes also brimming with tears. "i should be the one that's crying" you mutter as you squeeze his hands a bit, which resulted in his tail wagging.
"i'm sorry." he says, "i'm so, so sorry. i shouldn't have shouted at you like that..." he softly says, which tugged at your heart making your ears tilt a bit upwards and made your tail swish. seeing the reaction motivated him to be more sincere to earn you back.
"i shouldn't have ripped your necklace..." he eyes your bandaged wound. "most importantly, i shouldn't have told you to leave after calling you something degrading..." tears start to fall from his eyes, which by habit you immediately cup his face and wipe the tears, instantly retracting your hands you freeze as he grabs a hold of them again planting a soft kiss on each of the back of your hand.
"thank you... for staying..." he breathes out, feeling relieved not seeing any baggage in the house. you stay silent, not wanting to respond so he stands up to sit beside you and pull you into a hug. you feel warmth radiating off of him.
"leave me alone..." you whisper, trying to push him and remove his grip on your hands. "please! i don't want to lose you! you matter so much to me! i can change- i will change, please. give me a chance. my love... yawne, please..." you hear his voice breaking in desperation as he holds your shoulders firmly.
you stay silent, staring at him with glossy eyes which tightens his heart at the sight of you, he attempts to plant a kiss on your lips but you move your head sideways only allowing him to plant it on your cheek. he sighs as he pouts. "you're not losing me. just... please, step out... i want to think..." you pleaded softly, so he nods understanding and not wanting to make you uncomfortable so he complies. standing up and walks to the living room area of your pod.
Tumblr media
days past and you've given him the silent treatment, you awoke hungry so you went to your shared pantry silently grabbing a fruit as he was asleep on the woven floor of the living room area which made you feel bad.
you went back inside and sat on the bed, munching on the fruit as you noticed he was sleepily standing at the doorway. "can we talk?" he softly says, rubbing his eyes approaching you when you nod. "will you forgive me? please?" ao'nung kneels and asks with fear in his eyes, fear of being rejected by you, almost to much to bear.
"i haven't eaten in the past few days, nothing but pain and guilt in my bod-" you cut him off by shoving the fruit which made his eyes wide, nonetheless he bit the fruit finishing it. "why did you do that?" he asks. "...you said you haven't eaten in the past few days." i say, concerned despite our argument.
"so you're feeding me? like i'm a child?" he asks in disbelief. "aren't you happy i even let you in here so we could talk?" you reason out.
"you could've come out, so we could work things out like a normal couple." he swallows. "but no, me and my stupid emotions, acted up and screw things over. so what now, you let me in to feed me thinking i'm going to fall into your arms and kiss you?" he sighs.
you scoff not liking his response, your eyebrows scrunched and my tail visibly twitching behind me in irritation. "what's with the attitude? i thought you wanted to talk in hopes of fixing us?" i ask. "i do, but you're treating me like i'm some kid... what kind of adult would miss a few meals due to an argument... i don't deserve you..." he trails off.
you place a hand under his chin, "i'm treating you as my lover despite our argument, ao.", "please, forgive me. please" he pleads.
"ao... look, i want to forgive you. but-" you breathe out, while ao'nung's breath hitches, tears start to brim his lids. "you need to learn, ao'nung." his heart drops as soon as you say his name, you called him ao'nung, not ao, and most definitely not 'my love'.
"you hurt me with your words, making me overthink about you, overthink us." i say with my voice audibly shaking. "i know... and i'm deeply sorry, my love." he grabs your hands before continuing, "i'll do anything and everything to make up for my mistakes, i want you to know that, please." he softly says rubbing his thumbs on your hands.
"i don't want your apology- i want your love... you made me lose trust in you, and the audacity of you to raise your fist at me? after shoving me to the ground??" i finally bring it up. ao'nung's eyes filled with guilt he bows down looking at the floor, embarrassed to even look at you. "i know, i know. i tried my best so i clenched it instead because i'd never hurt you no matter what, you know that."
you stayed silent, "i'll rebuild your trust, i promise. i'll even go attend therapy sessions with my mother, i'll do whatever it takes. i love you so much, i can't bear to live without you by my side. i resisted to sleep beside you as you asked to be alone so i slept at the cold woven floor of ours... please, i need you." he says still kneeling, feeling the mat puncture his skin a bit.
"cuddle me..." you whisper as hush as you could, ao'nung's ears perked up hearing you loud and clear as he got up brushing his knees with slight pain. he gently lays you on the bed, grabbing your arms to wrap around him as he grazes your waist and hugs you tightly.
you missed the feeling of sleeping and waking up in his arms, the past few days made you feel lonely, nothing but an empty space beside.
"you're my everything, if i ever hurt you like this again. i don't know what i'd do..." he says holding you closely to his heart. "i won't forgive you just yet, you'll have to work hard." you say sternly, cheek against his chest. "i will. i’ll fix myself for us. i won’t let you down, i’ll love you and make you feel it so you don’t ever doubt.”
ao’nung held you, both your hearts calming as you two fell asleep. he was happy to hold you even if things are unsure and unclear, atleast you two were trying to work things out.
ao’nung’s eyes may be closed but his mind ran wild, he couldn’t get over on how he made you cry, he hated seeing you cry whenever you had a bad day or got scolded during your shifts. he hated himself more than ever for being the reason you cried.

enjoy the silence II | ao’nung.
ao’nung x fem!sully!reader
previous part | part two | next part
Tumblr media

a/n: welcome to the second installment of enjoy the silence! the first part ended up being posted two days earlier than expected (the last time i ever schedule a post) and still needed scenes added but, i’m so happy you all loved it so much anyway! i tagged everyone who asked to be tagged. thank you guys so much for the support!
The morning after Ao’nung had said those things to you by the shore came quickly. After he had stalked off, you went back to your mauri, purposely taking the long way home to be with your thoughts for a while. Did you read his signs wrong? Was he even giving any signs to begin with? Or had you been clouded with the illusion of being a perfect pair that you hadn’t even considered how Ao’nung felt?
Your siblings could feel your slight sadness when you arrived back, but no one had questioned it much, save for a few, “Feelin’ alright?”s from your father. Moving to Awa’atlu had affected everyone, they had felt the overwhelming ache of homesickness every once in a while, they understood you were feeling down. If only they knew, your once source of happiness was now your source of distress.
Despite that, you weren’t angry with Ao’nung. Not at all. You understood where he was coming from completely. As the future Olo’eyktan, he needs to protect his people. That means protecting them from humans, and your family had brought that threat. If anything, it’s natural for him to be hostile towards you. That didn’t mean it didn’t hurt. But you were resilient.
You just had to prove to him you were more than what was running in your veins.
Today, like the past few days, was filled with training. Ao’nung was paired up with you, again. You felt uneasy at first, not wanting to make him more uncomfortable with you. He gave Tsireya a look, almost begging to switch partners. She only rolled her eyes and smiled when you reached them.
He must’ve told her how he felt about you, or maybe she had heard his harsh words to you last night. Either way, you’re sure she smacked him upside the head for upsetting you. Tsireya took a genuine liking to you, and she may or may not have been doubling her efforts in winning over the Sully family due to her liking of Lo'ak.
Once all together in the shallow water, Ao’nung began to call to the Ilu. Almost immediately, they swam up and circled him. It was mesmerizing, watching him call them so effortlessly, how they swam up to him so fondly.
“These are Ilu. If you want to live here, you have to ride,” he explained. You were excited, you had little trouble claiming your Ikran, surely this is no different.
Ao’nung faced you, pointing, “the demon girl will go first.” Your eyes widened, suddenly intimidated. But, you had to show him you weren’t just some forest girl with five fingers.
You swam up to an Ilu, petting it. It clicked at you, nudging you affectionately. This creature was so gentle, so sweet to you. Your Ikran was nothing but the opposite when you claimed it; squawking loudly, attempting to throw you over the edge of the cliff. You gained some confidence from its gentle demeanor, and climbed on top. Tsireya and Ao’nung swam up beside to keep the Ilu still and allow you to make a bond.
“Make the bond, and hold here,” Tsireya gestured to the handle. You pulled your queue from behind you, bare, pink nerves ready to make a connection. You took a deep breath and made the bond with your Ilu. Suddenly, you felt its being as whole, as a part of you. You felt its breath, its fins, how strong it is, how eager it was to swim with a new driver.
“Breathe from here, remember. Hold your breath when you dive, the Ilu is fast. But it will know when to go back up for air. It feels you, you feel it,” Ao’nung placed his hand on your upper stomach like he had done when training your breathing. You gasped quietly, not expecting such a gentle, forward gesture from him. Especially not after last night’s exchange.
Your golden eyes made contact with his, your brows furrowed in confusion. Hadn’t he just reprimanded you for just merely existing? Now he was touching you so delicately, like you’d break from too much pressure. Had last night really just been a bit? Just a teasing joke? Maybe he didn’t hate you after all?
His mixed signals made you feel fuzzy, your brain suddenly so confused. The Ilu felt it, too, and began to thrash around from the uncertainty you felt at Ao’nung’s touch. He removed his hand from you, much to your disappointment, to calm the Ilu back down to stillness.
You shook the thoughts about him out of your head, you had to focus. “I’m ready, I can do this.”
“Start slow, don’t hurt yourself,” Ao’nung’s tone was firm, but worried. Perhaps he did care for you.
You took another deep breath, and went off into the water.
You started slow, like Ao’nung instructed, getting comfortable with being pulled through the water by the Ilu. Gradually you sped up, gliding through the reef with ease.
The rush of adrenaline that flowed through you only made you more and more confident. The beautiful reef had you hypnotized, you felt so much while being wished around the glowy underwater plants and animals. The swirl of colors dizzied you in only the best way, leaving you in awe.
You reached a hand out to brush against the foliage as you flew past it. It was so soft to the touch. It only reminded you of Ao'nung's.
What he said greatly hurt you, joke or not. The contrast of his words then and now was so confounding to you. And with the thought of him back in your mind, you became tense, now losing your focus. You lost your balance on the Ilu along with your secure grip.
This thrashed you around some, but you could regain your composure. Unfortunately, it was proving difficult.
You underestimated the force of the water. Your grip on the Ilu faltered more with the ever growing speed. You couldn’t keep up, the pressure was too much. The rush of the water was now pulling you back, straining your limbs. Dreadful fear filled you when you realized, inevitably you’d be knocked off and sent into waters you weren’t familiar with at all, with animals and creatures you’d never interacted with.
You had underestimated the difficulty of riding an Ilu, just as you had underestimated Ao’nung’s impact on you. It was all too similar.
At first, you’d been confident and blinded by excitement. Excitement of meeting your seemingly perfect match. Excitement of trying something new. You weren’t careful, not assessing the situation completely before you dived in headfirst.
You didn’t take Ao’nung himself into account, how powerful his actions, his feelings are just as the water’s force is on your body now. Oh, how your impulsivity ricocheted back to you, but ten times stronger. Whiplash from Ao’nung’s mixed signals and the rush of the current you’re trying to push through.
You had to let go, you realized.
You had to let go of the Ilu before you hurt yourself. You had to let go of your delusional idea of yours and Ao’nung’s relationship before it drastically hurts you. Or him. You couldn't bear the thought of hurting him, in any way.
He didn’t feel the same, he never would. Spiraling down this idea would only complicate things more. You needed to let go.
With that, you took your grip off the Ilu, ripped from the back of the creature and sent off into the water.
Your breath had begun to ran out and you were so far down, clouded with thoughts of needing air and needing Ao'nung. Neither would come to you soon enough.
Unbeknownst to you, a pair of azure eyes caught sight of your descending figure before it was too late. He couldn't bear the thought of you being hurt. The thought alone was what was driving him to swim to you faster.
Ao'nung needed you, too.

Neteyam told you and you didn't listen. You allowed yourself to be blindsided by the nice things Ao’nung did for you to forget how much of an ass he was when you and your family first stepped foot seeking shelter that you didn’t even see what was going on when you weren’t around.
You clutch onto the necklace that lay still on your neck, it was the first gift Ao’nung had given you after you decided to give him a chance.
“A beautiful necklace for a sevin girl like you.” He had said and it made you swoon but now the words felt like they were laced with a deadly poison infecting your heart that was hurting the most as you witnessed Ao’nung making fun of your younger sister’s, Kiri, five fingers.
The same five fingers you had and it infuriated you even more.
Lo’ak who was right next to you was about to step in but you put your arm out in front of him silently telling him to stay in his place.
You didn’t know what you were going to do or what you were going to say but your feet started to carry you toward them.
“He asked if you’re a freak!” One of his friends had repeated, Kiri was still unphased but you were seething with anger. “No” Kiri softly said but Ao’nung just scoffed.
“Are you sure, I mean you’re not even real Na’vi” He snickers as he tries to reach for Kiri’s hand but before he can, you push him with all your strength making him stumble onto his friend. “What the-“ As soon as he saw your angry face, he knew he fucked up big time.
He puts up his hands in surrender. “This is not what it looks like.” Kiri makes her way over to you putting a hand on your shoulder knowing how much you’re hurting inside.
“Then tell me what it looked like 'cause it’s pretty clear you were making fun of my little sister!” You yell at him, stepping towards him as he steps back.
“I was just joking-“ you interrupted him with a hiss filled with hatred, his ears pinned flat to his head as his tail slowly dropped sadly.
“You lied to me! You promised me, you would treat my siblings with respect,” you fight back the tears not wanting them to fall down in front of him.
If you break down just one bit, it’d be so hard to fight yourself from running into his arms which became your safe haven.
“I trusted you!” You push him again. “I was a fool to think that a skxawng like you could ever change.” His eyes widen with fear, “Oeyä tiyawn, what are you saying?” He tries to take your hand but you step back and look into his eyes that were filled with tears.
“I’m saying we’re over,” you take off the necklace still fighting back the tears as you place it in his hand which was frozen in place.
“No, you can’t, we’re meant to be together.” He protests, gripping tightly on the necklace.
“I can’t be with someone who would find joy in making fun of my family, different features or not, we’re ‘real na’vi’” you recalled one of his words which still stung as you kept going over the many memories you both made with each other.
“Tiyawn, I didn’t mean any of it, please don’t do this.” His voice cracked as tears rolled down his face. The sight just made you even angrier than you already were, how dare he cry when he was the one in the wrong.
You let out a small laugh causing him to look at you with confusion, “You really are a skxawng you know that?” He opens his mouth to talk but you immediately hissed and his mouth shut quickly.
“When you call her a freak, you’re calling me a freak as well!” You yelled as you pushed him again.
You raise your five fingers at him. “I have five fingers which you held onto and said you loved, so why is it different with me, huh?” You held back a sob that threatened to escape your mouth.
“I must be some fucking fantastic freak you’ve ever seen.” You yell as you meet his teary gaze that held nothing but fear and regret. You point to him and back to you.
“Whatever we had is over, I don’t ever want to see you again.” With that being said, you turn to walk away but before you can take a step, his hand grips your wrist trying to plead with you to give him one more chance but you snatch your hand away from him and walk in the direction of your marui with Kiri walking close to you.
Ao’nung tries to go after you but Lo’ak stops him, quietly telling him to go the other way, trying to restrain himself from punching him right then and there.
The walk back to your marui was silent as you replayed everything in your mind, tears finally allowed to fill your eyes but never fell because you didn’t want Lo’ak and Kiri to see you like this but you failed to cause once you stepped foot in the marui and saw Neteyam, your lip trembled as the tears rolled down your face, you make your way over to him and he immediately embraces you in a hug as you let it all out.
“Tsmukan, you were right, you’re always right.” You cried as he held you close as Lo’ak and Kiri patted your back letting you know they were here for you.
As you wept, no one said anything, just comforted you til you quieted down. Neteyam couldn’t wait till he see Ao’nung so he can punch him for making the one thing he didn’t want to come true happen.

Requesting for a fluff angst story of fem!metkayina!reader (I think that’s how you say it?) and Aonung.
One night Aonung wakes up to reader talking in her sleep and she’s making suggestive noises and mumbling “oh baby” but he knows that reader knows that he hates being called baby! Now he thinks reader is fantasizing about another Navi other than him, making him jealous and being distant towards reader for a day until reader corners him in their mauri and makes Aonung explain whys he’s being so cold to her. Which he reluctantly explains and reader tells him that she was dreaming about a funny dream of a Tulkun named baby.(idk you can change it if you want! 🤭) then it ends with a bunch of cuddles and reassurance making sure Aonung knows that reader is the only Navi she wants! So basically a bunch of fluff at the end!
(Hopefully this makes sense! Please don’t rush I know being a writer can be stressful so take your time if you do end up writing this 🙃)
Hello sweetie! Thank you for this request! honestly reading your idea made me laugh a bit. Hopefully this can satisfy your reading thirst! Enjoy!

[god this gif is big]
Tumblr media
Night as arrived for pandora. The Metkayina clan was getting things done as the day has ended. Many fellow na'vi heading to their homes, saying their goodnights to their beloved tulkun brothers and sisters. That day the tulkuns have come to visit them The excitement tired them out but look forward to see them again tomorrow.
Ao'nung finished his duties and made his way to his beloved's mauri. His parents let him sleep in their home or his beloved's, as the courting is going well.
Coming inside he sees his beloved preparing for them to sleep. He smiles as he is happy to find such a wonderful mate. They haven't mated yet but he still calls her his mate. His Unil. A pet name he will forever call her as. Which means 'dream'. Sure she likes to sleep a lot and would tell him of many dreams she has, he loves to listen to them. Many of her dreams are vastly different and no two are the same or repeated. He never gets tired of hearing what she dreamed about.
His beloved turns and smiles lovingly at him. Gesturing to get closer, he does and wraps his strong arms around her waist, pulling her close. "long day my love?" she asks softly, he nods as he buries his face into her neck, taking in her ocean scent. A smell he will never get tired of.
Not saying anymore, she leads him to their shared hammock, guiding him to lay down, taking off the band that tied his hair, letting it fall down on his shoulders.
Blowing away the light of the lantern, Unil joined her beloved and lied down beside him. Ao'nung wrapping his arms around unil, bringing her close to his chest, the need to feel her body against his. Unil getting comfy and lets herself drift off to sleep.
Tumblr media
Throughout the night it was silent and peaceful, until ao'nung woke up to unil...talking her in sleep? He looked down at her face, she was smiled, pleased at something. Giggling even!
He grew curious on what was making her giggling so much. Could she be dreaming about him? Knowing the sounds unil makes, he probably wont get some shut eye soon, so he he listens to hear and guess what his beloved is dreaming.
"mmnn......*giggles* no no prrnen....haha...."
ao'nung didnt move for a good solid minute. Prrnen? That is a pet name ao'nung hates with his very being! Unil at times would attempt to call him that but he would explain he hates that name. A childish name and something he doesnt want to be associated with. So if it's not ao'nung she is calling in her dream, then who is it?
"no no prrnen....slow down....*giggles* yes like that....I love you" unil continues on in her sleep. With each moan and giggle she makes, ao'nung gets more angry. To him, it sounds like she is dreaming of another na'vi. That thought make him even angrier. Was he not enough for unil? Was he not the best warrior Eywa could give to unil? Was he not strong enough? Not impressive enough? So many questions ran in his head, thinking what could make his beloved think of another man when she is in his arms.
Morning came and the people has risen to prepare for another day. Unil woke up and stretched her limbs, hearing some of her bones pop. "MMnnn~!!! good morning my love, did you sleep well-oh, up so early?" she looks to see ao'nung full up and preparing his tools. "yeah, I didnt get much sleep last night..." he said in a a rather distant voice. "what happened? did you have a nightmare?" concerned she went over to her mate.
But when she touched his shoulder, he pulled away. Unil was surprised by this. He was never to reject her touch, why now? "well, how about some breakfast before getting on with our day?" she tried again, hopping to bring him in a calm level. "don't bother, I already ate" and with that he left her mauri.
Unil was in a mix of emotions. They always woke up together, always ate breakfast together before going to do their duties to the clan. It was so strange and it wasn't a welcoming one either. But for the moment she didn't pursue him. Perhaps he needed some time to himself. It happens.
But never for 3 days straight.
Tumblr media
Unil was at the end of her wits. After that morning ao'nung never went back to sleep the night with her. Didnt bother to check on her, talk to her, nothing! and they always do things together. She didnt want to spend another night knowing ao'nung is like that with her.
Of course she also didnt want to bring his parents into the matter, feeling it would get worse. So as a grown woman and a mate, she wants to handle the matter on her own. Unless it gets too much then she will tap out.
So during the mid day she she did her duties quickly and went to find ao'nung. But where the hell was he? She looked everywhere for him! at the ilu pen, with the cooks, in the little jungle, around the reef, asked everyone around and not a sight to be hold.
But she managed to find rotxo and went to ask him where ao'nung was. Rotxo frowned a bit "I really dont know either unil. He seems upset these past days, has something happened between you two?" he asks. Unil sighed, "I am not sure. He just became like that three days ago. I want to know whats wrong so I can fix it". Rotxo pitied unil, she was a good mate for ao'nung, "I wish I could help you, I really do".
"its ok rotxo. Thank you either way".
Rotxo offered her a hug and she accepted. Both not knowing a certain pair of eyes were watching them closely.
Not able to stand it, ao'nung came out from the vegetation and marched straight to the two. "and what are you doing with her? hm? best you back off rotxo!" ao'nung pushed his friend away, rather roughly. "Ao'nung! what is the matter with you!? he is your best friend!" hissed unil, trying to get some distance between the boys.
"What is the matter with you!? you have acting weird recently! it has unil and me worried bro!" rotxo shouted. Unil was quick to help him up, though rotxo made the mistake of smiling softly at unil. It made ao'nung more pissed off.
Charging at him again, he pushed unil aside and went at it towards rotxo. Unil shouted and tried to pull him off, she really didnt want to do it but she grabbed and pulled his queue which made ao'nung hiss in pain and backs away.
"what are you doing?!" he yells but was quick to be silent as unil smacks him across the face. For him, it was as if time stopped. Unil never hit him before. Never layed a hand on him in such a way. He gently grabs the cheek that was hit and stares at his mate with wide eyes. His heart broke seeing her face scrunch in anger and tears flow from her eyes.
"YOU SKXAWNG!! what has been happening to you?! you are distant to me, being unreasonably violent towards rotxo! your best friend! tell me ao'nung! what happened that night? was it me? did I do something wrong?" so many questions escaped her lips as she cried out. She just wanted an answer, a reason behind his change of attitude.
Ao'nung took a moment in realization. Eyes moving from his friend to his mate. He sighs and confesses.
"that night in your mauri, you were giggling and laughing in your sleep. You said a prrnen! and you know I hate that name! so I thought you were dreaming of another man! a man that isnt me!" breathing out as if he was holding a long breathe.
Unil stopped crying, her eyes wide but now in slight confusion. Rotxo got up and did his best not to laugh. "prrnen? you heard me saying that?" she asks as she wipes her tears, the sadness now going away.
"yes! and I hate that name like I said! so I got mad! ok!? is that what you want to hear?!"
"yes actually"
unil and rotxo begin to laugh heartedly. Ao'nung was very confused. "oh my love, why didnt you tell me sooner? all this mess would have been avoided" unil smiles as she explains. "oh bro, haha! feeling jealous over a little baby?" rotxo teased. "baby? what baby? wait, ARE YOU PREGNANT?!" ao'nung shouted. He quickly did some numbers in his head, yes they done it before but not as recently for his mate to be pregnant.
Though that question made the other two laugh even louder, rotxo falling on his back and unil bends down trying to catch her breathe. Ao'nung was starting to feel embarrassed and not understanding.
Collecting herself, unil grabs his hand and leads him to the waters. "come my love, an explanation is very much over due", nodding he joins. Rotxo tagged along to see the outcome of it.
Tumblr media
Bit deeper in the reef the three see miklor, unil's spirit sister. But something was new, at least to ao'nung. Closely next to miklor is a little baby tulkun. Getting closer, unil and miklor greet each other, same for rotxo and ao'nung.
"sister! may ao'nung see little prrnen?" unil asks in the sign language. "of course sister, I trust him enough" miklor responds. Unil gestures her mate to come closer, to which he does. At the same time, miklor guides her baby closer to him. "My love, this is prrnen, the one I was dreaming about" unil explain. "miklor had her baby this past spring and I was playing with them both. My dream reflected that day my love"
Everything now all clicked in his brain. Yes, three days ago the tulkun came, and unil spent the majority of the day meeting and catching up with her spirit sister. Ao'nung spent his time with his spirit brother, so he didnt see miklor at all.
His inner thoughts were interrupted when prrnen was carefully nudging him. Asking to play. And play they did. Prrnen was a sweet little one, having the energy of 20 young na'vi. They all played games, danced and sang. Until night came, saying their goodnights to miklor and prrnen they went back to the shore.
"I am very sorry rotxo, I acted like a fool" ao'nung apoligized, his best friend accepted but lectured him to hear things out before jumping to conclusions. With that, rotxo left to go home.
"do you want to..sleep with me tonight?" unil asked nervously. "Always my love" he smiled making her smile in return. Holding hands, they make their way to unil's mauri. "prrnen the tulkun baby......haha, thinking it now, I am such a skawng. I shouldnt let my anger beat my judgment. I am sorry unil, I really am" ao'nung stared deep into unil's ocean eyes, being sincere and truthful. She smiles warmly, "I know my love, I forgive you". Feeling the weight lift off his shoulders, ao'nung hugs her tightly. Eywa truly blessed him such a kind woman.
Holding hands, they continue their way home. For another night of being together, cuddling, and giving kisses to each other. And hopefully no more misunderstandings for the mean time.
Tumblr media
And that is all for this one! I hope you all enjoyed it! until next time!
prrnen = baby, infant
miklor = pleasant sounding, beautiful sounding
skawng = moron
unil = dream

The next day, you and the Sullys woke up, exhausted but relieved to have slept in a real bed - even though you had shared yours with Kiri, which neither of you minded. Jake gave you his speech about respecting their traditions and people, and had especially looked at Lo'ak when he told you to behave - which made you discreetly laugh. So you and the siblings were on the road to the beach, ready to take your first steps into a completely new world, different from what you knew.
"I hope you drown." Kiri said playfully to her brother, nudging his shoulder to annoy him.
"If it's after you I don't care."
As you watched the two idiots make a scene in front of you while holding Tuk's hand, you couldn't help but laugh at their ridiculous insults. They may not be related by blood but they sure acted like they were. Sometimes it really fascinated you and you couldn't look away from their whining, secretly choosing a side to support.
"Don't you feel hot ?"
Neteyam's voice snapped you out of your analysis, causing you to jump and almost stumble headlong into the sand. Like a deer caught in the headlights, you almost broke your neck as you turned your gaze to his handsome face that was smiling at your nonsenses. It was cute.
"No- I'm fine. I'm really good." you repeated, not knowing what else to say to ease his concerns.
Doubtful, he looked at your getup, skeptical before reaching for the strange top you were wearing that covered your entire upper body.
"I've always seen you in that but never questioned it, since that's what father's friend wears too. But I can't help but think it must be uncomfortable, isn't it?"
"No. I'm used to it. But I'm not used to wearing your clothes. I feel…exposed ?"
Neteyam did not understand what you meant by 'exposed'. Which was quite understandable since he had grown up seeing women and men wearing nothing by your standards. His own clothes, as well as those of all the Na'vis, only covered their private parts. So seeing you show up on a beach in a baggy t-shirt and cargo pants that looked way too big for you was one of the reasons why Neteyam would never consider you his sister, unlike Tuk. You were just too different.
Shrugging, he did not question your choice of words and continued on his way by your side, sometimes asking you questions such as 'did you sleep well ?' or 'what do you think of this place ?', or interfering in the passionate discussions Tuk was having with you. So, even though the walk was not that long, you had the impression that it lasted only a few seconds. For the second time, in a short period of time, you had talked to your crush and said more than two sentences. Maybe this new place was going to work out for you after all.
Tumblr media
"Look at them, they're worse than babies."
"Can't even stay three minutes underwater."
No, you were wrong, you were going to hate this place. Eywa, you already hated it. When you arrived on the beach, almost panting from the heat since you were used to the coolness of the lab, the two boys from yesterday and the pretty girl were waiting for you, half sunk into the water. While she had welcomed you warmly, her brother, if you had understood correctly what Lo'ak had told you last night with passionate insults, had only rolled his eyes. You were sure you had heard him mocking the Sully's and were selfishly glad to have gone under the radar. But you couldn't stay invisible for long.
"You ! What are you doing on the shore ?" the boy with the bun had called you in a scathing voice, drawing everyone's attention to you. "You think that you're too good to learn our way ?"
"Ao'nung !" his sister chided him, a frown on her face. Slowly, she swam until she was within reach of you and started a conversation with you, surely trying to make you feel comfortable. "Hi, my name is Tsireya, I'm sorry my brother can be a skxawng sometimes. Why don't you come with us ?"
You blushed and looked at her pretty face, then at her hand that was extended to you, urging you to take it and join her into the water.
Snapping out of your trance, you shook your head at full speed, moving away from the waves that licked the sand beneath your feet. "Maybe later… Thanks."
"Fine. We'll wait, don't worry. If you need help you can call me, I'll be right there."
You blushed again but did not answered. Eywa, she was so nice and pretty. Did you sounded rude ? But from what little you saw, she seemed to be understanding, the opposite of her brother, who you knew was looking at you with a nasty look from where he was standing. You couldn't hear what he was saying, but from his friend's laugh and Lo'ak's look you were sure you did not want to know.
So, from a distance, you watched them practicing diving underwater. They did not move or swim, they just tried to see their current predisposition. Not surprisingly, Lo'ak and Tuk were the first to get their heads out of the water to take a deep breath. Always, when they did so, Lo'ak would turn to you to see if you were still watching them. When he saw you laughing at him, which you always did, he would make faces at you before being called to order, which made you laugh even more.
Sometimes Neteyam would pop his head out of the water. In those moments you felt like you were going to explode because of how hot your face was. But you could blame it on the heat, couldn't you ? On the other hand, you could not look away from the spectacle that was offered to you every time he emerged from the waves. His skin glistening, his eyes shining, his hair dripping with sea water. He really was a sight. Fortunately, he did not see you scrutinizing him like the Nantangs scrutinized their prey. At least you thought so, because Neteyam did notice the way you looked away whenever he caught you looking at him. He did not mind though, he loved the attention…
As for Kiri, you could not help but feel amazed and impressed when she was the last one out of the water. No matter what she did, she always succeeded, whether it was her Ikniyama, something as complicated as healing, and now freediving. Part of you knew you should not feel this way since she was your best friend but you could not help but feel…jealous. She was different from you in so many ways and was proving it once again right here. Even away from home, she seemed to be a genius and learned faster than anyone else. And you could only watch from afar, sitting on the edge of this beach, insecure.
The morning had gone by quite quickly and it was soon enough time to eat. One by one, the Sully came out of the water, soaked, exhausted, out of breath, but above all hungry. Immediately, Lo'ak walked towards you and, sensing the stupidity coming, you got up at full speed, trying to escape the mischievous boy. Nothing on his face gave away his intentions, not even a smile. But you knew. You knew him so well.
Obviously you were not quick enough, because in one swift move Lo'ak had jumped on your back, throwing you both to the ground. And, to your dismay, he was soaked.
"Get off of me moron!" you yelled, trying as best as you could to escape from his wet arms as he took great pleasure in soaking your clothes with sea water.
"Why should we be the only one who are wet huh ?" he said in a defying tone, muffling your protests by putting his hand on your mouth. Unfortunately fro him, you were a quick thinker.
"Ah ! That's disgusting !" he cried out and took his hand away from your mouth at the wet sensation on his palm.
You grinned and laughed out loud, not caring about being soaked anymore. His face was priceless. The kind of 'bitch what the fuck' face. It really was a 'Lo'ak thing' to do. Rolling her eyes at your childish games, Kiri took the matter into her own hands by grabbing her brother tail and pulling on it until he let you go. And all of this under the three Metkayina's eyes. Neteyam was embarrassed. He took his little sister hand and walked away from the scene, acting like he did not know you.
Tumblr media
"Fish."
"Yes, it's the local dietary regime." Neytiri said, putting a big plate in the middle of the circle that you all were forming as you were sitting on the ground. "There's not much meat around here, unless you go in the forest behind the village. But apparently, it's dangerous."
"What can be more dangerous than Palulukan ?" Lo'ak scoffed before eating a piece of fish.
"We're trying to fit in, so just eat your fish and stop complaining." Jake said as he too took a piece of fish from the wooden plate. "Don't make this harder than it already is."
"Yes sir."
Silence reigned for most of the meal, everyone lost in their own thoughts, or simply focusing on their meal. When no one was looking at you, you and Lo'ak exchanged glances full of meaning. After years of being around each other, you had managed to create a language of your own, one that even Kiri found difficult to understand at times. Sometimes it only took a glance for you to understand what the other wanted. It was a habit that you had taken to avoid Lo'ak being reprimanded by his father for having breathed a little too loudly.
Sensing the tension in the atmosphere, Jake cleared his throat and moved awkwardly in his seat, speaking up.
"So… What did you guys do this morning ?"
"We practiced breath-hold diving for as long as we could." Neteyam replied with a nonchalant shrug. He knew the subject was going to be brought up and their father wanted to know about their progress.
"So what ? Are you doing okay ?"
"Yes. Me and Kiri lasted the longest." Neteyam replied without missing a beat, proud of his completions. Obviously, his father had to know about it.
"And Lo'ak also did very well for a first time !" you interjected, hoping to get your friend out of a situation that was already starting to look bad. "It's normal to have some difficulties when trying something new-" your voice got smaller and smaller as Jake looked you in the eyes, surely looking for the lie in your voice. But he couldn't find one, because even though Lo'ak's performance was not as good as his siblings', in your eyes he was doing really well. "…right ?" you squealed, looking down.
"Yes. As long as you're trying. But don't stagnate, tomorrow I want to hear that you made great progresses." he said, pointing his finger at his youngest son, who didn't look up once in his direction. Jake turned his attention to you and asked, "What about you ?"
"She did just fine." Lo'ak interrupted, looking into your eyes as yours widened at his lie. Out of the corner of your eyes you saw Tuk holding back the words that wanted to come out of her mouth while Kiri and Neteyam froze. All the Sully children knew that you had not even approached the water. But they all continued with their meal, deciding that it was better for you to avoid Jake's disappointment. Neteyam and Lo'ak were used to it, Kiri had never been reprimanded, nor Tuk. But they knew that if you, of all people, was reprimanded by Jake, it would mean loud cries and heavy heart for the rest of the day. If they all knew something about you, it was that you were… well, fragile.
Lo'ak gave you an 'I-got-you' look and you slightly nodded back, smiling and resuming eating your fish as Kiri engaged a conversation with her mother about her morning.
Tumblr media
"Gotta go back swimming." Lo'ak complained when his father disappeared behind a Marui, annoyed at the thought of spending time with those weird blue Na'vis again. He could not stand them, even more after he heard them talk about you this morning. They were disgustingly disrespectful, just because your tail was fluffy and your clothes not like theirs.
"I did not said that to save your ass, you really did good this morning." you said in a soft voice while playfully pushing him with your shoulder.
He pushed you away from him and muttered "You're embarrassing." Since the light was bright around you, you missed the way his freckles started to glow.
"Stop being babygirl material." the English words left your mouth before you could even think about it and you freckles glowed as you stopped in your tracks.
"What the- What does that even mean ?" he said, genuinely curious at the new expression. He was used to some English words and turn of phrase that you used but this one was a new one. He was pretty good at remembering the insults.
"Hum. It's like- I don't how to explain it." you shrugged, going back to walking, Lo'ak following behind you while rolling his eyes.
"If you don't know what that means don't use it."
"I know what that means !" you said, put out, " I just don't know how to explain it..."
"Then don't use it."
"Oh hush."
Soon enough you all arrived on the same beach as this morning and, to your dismay, you were feeling hotter than before. The ambient temperature was making your skin glistening with your sweat and your shirt was almost sticking to your body. You really hated it, here. You really should have stayed with Norm, in the labs, enjoying his company while experimenting on new things.
"You're coming ?" Kiri asked, side hugging you.
Well, whatever, you were going to be fine. You just needed to make some efforts to fit in. Your gaze wandered over your surroundings, and you saw Neteyam and Tuk diving into the water, Tsireya floating a bit farther away.
Something felt off but you could not pinpoint what it was.
"Hum. Yeah ? I guess than I can try..."
"I got you." Lo'ak said, his hand hovering over your back in case you needed help. He could tell that you were not feeling comfortable and that for some reasons you did not wanted to go in the water. But it was fine, he was just behind you, it would not let you get hurt on uncomfortable.
"As always." you chuckled nervously, trying to ease the wariness inside of your head that was preventing you from stepping into the water. "Don't let me drown. Hold me tight."
"It will depend on you."
"Ahah you're so funny."
"Come on we don't have all day !" Tuk complained, unhappy that she could not yet have fun in the water because of how slow you were.
Why would you do this to yourself when you could just sit quietly on the beach while watching them swim and have fun ?
"Come on crybaby." Lo'ak rolled his eyes, trying to push you further into the water. But you planted your feet on the sand, resisting and not budging. Frowning at your resistance, he tried another way. Encircling your hips with his arms, he carried you in order to walk further into the water. You squealed and tried to resist, immediately clinging to him once you realized that him letting you go would mean that you would end up in the cold water.
"Don't you dare putting me down or walking further into the water ! My tail is sensitive, more than yours, it's very cold." you said, putting the emphasis on 'very'. And it was true. Despite not knowing were you came from, you still knew quite some things about your body. And one thing that you learn quick enough was that your tail was really sensitive. As if each hair on it was just some kind of ultra sensitive sensor.
"No my tail is sensitive." You heard someone make fun of you and the minute after your body and your head were immersed into the water, your clothes and your tail soaked. As if that was not enough, since you were holding into Lo'ak's neck, said boy fell on top of you, crushing you under his weight in the short time he had been off balance. Your mouth opened in shock and you swallowed water, coughing up bubbles. Before you could panic unnecessarily since you could still touch the bottom, Lo'ak pulled you to the surface.
You coughed and spat out the water that had entered your lungs, not feeling as hot as you did before. As you caught your breath, slumped against your friend's chest, you heard laughter a few feet away. Now you knew what was off. Tsireya's brother and his friend were not here when you arrived. They were missing. And now you understood why.
"Look at their faces !"
"Whoops, my bad. You do not belong in the water, children of the forest, especially you, human-freak."
You did not look up, your eyes round and your breath short, still shocked by what had just transpired. You felt like you were making a big deal out of nothing, but you could not just ignore what had just happened since your mind and thoughts were too messy. Being pushed into the water had affected you, sure, but what had caused you to be so shaken up was the violence of the actions and words you had just been victims of. Did they hate you that much ?
"I'm going to fucking kill them…" you heard Lo'ak mutter. He tightened his grip on your waist before pulling your body away from his, gently handling you to his sister whose mouth was wide open, shocked by the events. Striding in their direction, he pushed Ao'nung violently once he was within arms reach. "What's your fucking problem ?!"
Before the situation could get any worse, Neteyam, who had been watching from afar what had just happened, swam as quickly as possible to hold back his brother. "Lo'ak ! Stop it !"
"No ! I'm not stopping anything, you saw what he did to us-"
"It's fine !" Neteyam grabbed his brother's shoulder, dragging him away from the boys who were making fun of you just before his eyes. Lo'ak, in disbelief, quickly turned around to look at his brother, ready to protest, but he was interrupted once again.
"Look, nobody's hurt. There's no need to make a big deal out of it. Just...let it slide okay ?"
Now Lo'ak was shocked by his brother's reaction. It's true that he did not return your feelings and had no reason to defend you, but it was more than that. It was a matter of pride. Did he not even consider you a friend ? Or even his siblings' best friend ?
"You're kidding me right ?"
"..."
"Wow, you reached a whole new level of dickhead. And you're supposed to watch over us ? Don't make me laugh."
Lo'ak swam back to you, guiding your shivering form to the shore with Kiri's help. And as if the whole afternoon was not bad enough, Jake and the chief of the village showed up on the beach,  probably to examine the progress you had made. You could not fight here, in front of the chief of the Metkayina's but above all in front of Jake. And Ao'nung definitely knew that because he was laughing out loud at Lo'ak's face, acting like you all were good friends.
"Everything's good here ?" Jake asked, looking between the three of you and the others in the water.
"Yes." Ao'nung answered, smiling big.
"Such a sxkawng..."
"Lo'ak !" Jake yelled, having clearly heard Lo'ak's insult. "Behave and go back to training."
She looked at you, worried, not knowing if she should return to you to help you or give in to her father's wishes.
Lo'ak rolled his eyes and stayed on the beach next to you as Kiri was slowly going back into the water. She looked at you, worried, not knowing if she should return to you to help you or give in to her father's wishes. You nodded in order to reassure her, silently telling her that you were going to be fine. Unfortunately, you knew that you could not just stand on the beach when Jake was standing a few feet away from you. Especially not after lying to him during lunch break.
"Don't do it if you don't want to..." your friend whispered to you, trying to be discreet enough to not be heard by his father.
"I don't have any choice, he's watching us." you whispered back, frowning as you made your way towards the sea, watching fearfully the water submerge your body little by little. You almost lost your balance when your tail, who got heavier due to the water, sank into the wave. It wasn't like the Omatikayan's or Metkayinan's tails. Yours was obviously not fitting into the water. At least the Sully's tail was slender. But yours was heavy. You were not used to feel that amount of heaviness on your back.
"Don't worry, I got you." Fortunately, Lo'ak prevented you from falling - once again, by holding your waist, trying to make you stand up straight. At least in front of his father. He did not wanted you to be reprimanded by him, it would suck.
"Great. Good work, see you tonight." Jake nodded, satisfied, and left after Tonowari, leaving you all silent into the water. You carefully in Lo'ak's waited until As soon as he was out of sight, you hurried up to the shore, tripping, head low, embarrassed upon hearing the mocking laughter of the two Metkayina's boys.
You really hated this place.
Tumblr media
Your tail took hours to dry. You tried to absorb the water with a weird towel that Tsireya, the nice sister, gave you, but it only helped a little. Because when it dried, oh Eywa, you wanted to cry. Your once beautiful shaggy and soft tail that you took care of was full of knots, everywhere.
And now you were really crying. Neytiri and Kiri was trying to remove the knots with wooden brushes and comb and it hurt. It hurt like hell. While you were just suffering, Lo'ak was kind enough to turn his head away from you when the need to laugh was too strong, but overall he was just looking at you with a blank a face. You knew for a fact that he was thinking about how he could get back to them. A 'Lo'ak thing' to do. Or maybe he was just trying to show some sympathy - which he obviously could not do.
While looking at him, a weird feeling suddenly flooded your body. You felt...hot. Strangely, you had the impression that you could still feel the lingering sensation of his body against yours. His breath on the top of your head and his warm, comforting embrace. When did he become so muscular, so 'adult looking' ? Eywa, he was your friend. You best friend. Just a friend. You shook your head and slapped your cheeks to get your mind out of the gutter. But the Kiri and her mother could tell that something was troubling you sine your tail was wagging between their hands, preventing them from helping you out with it.
As you were still crying your eyes out, overwhelmed, whining whenever Lo'ak was humming 'crybaby', Neteyam walked inside the Marui. He scanned the room with his eyes, his gaze landing on your glowing freckles and glistening face. Smiling, he made his way toward you, but was quickly stopped by a hand on his shoulder, gripping him firmly and preventing him from going further.
"We need to talk."
You all stopped what you were doing to look at the duo in the middle of the room, sensing the air get tense. The look on Lo'ak's face did not bode well. Or maybe it was just his 'bitch resting face'. In any case, Neteyam seemed just as surprised as you and simply looked at him, silently questioning his intentions. But Lo'ak did not answered nor budge, he only tightened his grip around his brother's shoulder and insisted, narrowing his eyes.
"Right now."
Lo'ak did not wait for his brother's response and dragged him out of the tent by force, leaving you, girls, wondering about what just happened. Neytiri was used to them going away to discuss 'private' things.
"Boys." Kiri huffed, resuming her previous actions by carefully stroking your wiggling tail. You yelped as Neytiri simply shrugged at the boys antics, going back to brushing your tail, trying to untangle a particularly strong knot.
"Stay put."
Oh Eywa, you were going to spend your night here, tortured by their unmerciful hands.
Tumblr media
"I think that I already told you to go and talk to her." Lo'ak said to his brother once they were far enough from the Marui, frowning, angry.
"About what ? Are you getting worked up because of what happened this afternoon ?"
"I don't give a fuck about what happened this afternoon. Just wait and see. I'm talking about her feelings for you. You think that just because we moved you can start to talk to her, acting like a charming prince ? Do you have feelings for her ? Do you even consider her like a friend ?"
HIssing, Neteyam shoved his brother's shoulder, pushing him away from him. He did not look happy; his ears were pinned to his head and he was baring his teeth, a low growl emitting from his chest.
"Don't tell me what to do."
"Oh so you're angry at me when I'm speaking the truth but don't react when those sxkawng basically attack us ?"
"I'm trying to protect you ! I'm supposed to watch over you, not her !" Neteyam hissed again, shoving his brother's chest with his finger at every words he said. "You can't go and fight for a girl when we are supposed to fit in and not cause any troubles !"
"A girl ? Huh, a girl." Lo'ak shook his head, obviously disappointed with his brother before nodding, shrugging his shoulders and taking a few steps back, hands in the air, as if giving up. His expression darkened and it was his turn to poke his brothers chest with his finger. "If I see you smile at her, laugh with her, let her think that something's possible between you two, I'm going to punch you in the face. I don't care that you are my brother, or a mighty warrior, I don't care if afterward you beat me to pulp or if mom and dad reprimand me. Stay. Away. From her."
Neteyam ran his hand through his hair and laughed, incredulous and annoyed at his little brother's ridiculous behavior. He could not wrap his head around the idea that his brother was willing to fight with him over some enamored girl who could not see that he was obviously not interested in her. "Just for a girl ?"
"That girl spent more time with me than you did. She protected me physically and verbally more than you did. So yeah, I would do that for a girl."
As Neteyam was, out of pure rage, about to tell Lo'ak what he really thought about you, tell him things which would definitely broke your heart if you heard them and start a fight between him and his brother, a voice interrupted them.
"Boys ? What's going on."
They kept silent, only looking at each other with their ears still pinned to their heads, their eyes shining with unsaid things. Lo'ak was the first one to step back. "Nothing sir." He respectfully greeted his father and headed back to their Marui.
"Neteyam ?"
"Nothing... How was your day ?"
Tumblr media
The eclipse had darkened the sky for a while now and the whole village was asleep, the light of the torches extinguished by the strong night winds coming right from the ocean. Looking around you and once you were sure that everyone was asleep, you got up and got out of the bed, being careful not to wake Kiri. Tiptoeing out of the Marui, bouncing on the net under your feet and laughing softly, you headed for the beach.
You could not continue to be a burden to the family that had taken you in and brought you with them. Tonight, despite the reassuring words of Kiri and Tuk, you could not even look at Jake in the eyes, let alone in his direction. You were so ashamed that you had to continue lying when you did not even dare to step into the water since your mishap. Not to mention the fact that your crush had seen the whole thing unfold. He had seen you come out of the water soaked to the skin, with your tail between your legs. You must have looked pathetic. But you were determined to change. So you thought that, maybe, you could start by desensitizing your tail to the coldness of the water and try to find your balance, even when it seemed to have doubled in weight.
Once on the beach, you walked with long, determined strides toward the waves that stretched across the sand before stopping at a reasonable distance.
"You can do it."
Taking a deep breath, you slowly approached the water, putting both feet in and trying to dip the tip of your tail. But instead you jumped and took two steps back. The water was freezing. Even more so than during the day.
"It's fine. It's gonna help."
You stepped forward again, ignoring the tremor in your hands and the sweat that was starting to run down your back.
You can't do it.
"I can do it."
Your thoughts were no longer clear and, even if you tried, you could not ignore that voice in your head. The world seemed to be spinning around you and a vice was compressing your chest, preventing you from breathing properly.
You can't do it.
"I- I can't do it." you stuttered, stumbling back and falling on the cold sand. Clenching your fist around the rough little minerals, you tried to clear your mind and make the void inside your head.
What a sight, you were pitiful. Every time you tried something new you would fail, destroy, deceive. No wonder Neteyam would never like you. You could not even step into the water. Intrusive thoughts were running in your head, making you feel like you were just incompetent. You were failing to see the beauty around you. The glowing fish and shining stars, bioluminescent flowers and corals. You were selfish, pessimist, close-minded, useless, weren't you ?
It was not unusual for you to feel like this. Like you were not in control of your own body, like someone was just talking inside your head and make fun of your failures. It started when you were young. You would hide under the desk in the labs or at the Avatar's sleeping quarters, breathing heavily and crying. But every time, he was there for you. He was holding your hand, hugging your side.
"Breath in, breath out."
The memory of Spider was as clear as the water in front of you. HIs laugh, is smile, his weird habits and clothes. Spider. Spider. Brother.
But no one was here to hold you or tell you sweet words. Not anymore. You were supported by your friends and yet, you still felt like you were alone. Fighting your demons alone, in your head. Just like you were on this beach. Without anyone around you. No sound, no warmth.
You tried, you really tried. Maybe not hard enough. But you knew that tonight, once again, you would fall asleep with a burning sensation in your eyes and an excruciating headache. You would wake up, the next day, smiley, pretending like nothing ever happened. Like you were not drowning in self-pity every night, getting closer to a bottomless abyss.
"Eywa, please, protect him."
Your Ikran landed just before you, nudging you, gently demanding you to stroke him. You smiled through your tears and hugged him, bathing in his warmth. He, at least, was not going to give up on you. He would stay by your side, forever.

Hi! I've had this idea simmering for a bit - could you possibly do an angsty enemies-to-lovers Aonung x fem Sully reader where they're veryyyy much enemies but during the demon ship battle, either one of reader's close friends/family members (could be neteyam or someone else) is dying and they ask aonung to not let reader look. She's freaking out and losing it and he's just trying to comfort her, hug her, calm her down, etc. Hope this isn't too specific - do with it what you wish :) tysm

The sky people say that ignorance is strength. That if you were numb enough to your surroundings, nothing would be able to break you; that nothing would matter so long as you didn’t feel anything.
They were wrong.
It had all happened so fast – all of you riding out the moment you realized that your siblings were in danger, the war party attacking the RDA the second Payakan had seized the demon ship. Against your father’s orders, you had jumped on your ikran as fast as you could, flying all the way to Three Brother’s Rocks.
You had no plan, only focused on saving your family. You soared swiftly through the clouds, drawing your bow each time you came in contact with an enemy ship. You had lost count of how many times you had shot something into the sea – it didn’t matter to you anymore.
Chaos had struck all around you; everywhere you turned, you saw war. The Great Balance wasn’t present here, this was a place of loss. You yelled as you narrowly missed the shots fired from a gunship, and you retaliated by shooting an arrow into its propellers.
You were running on pure adrenaline, your mind clouded with only one thought: save your siblings. It was a recurring voice in the back of your head, and it seemed to jolt you back into focus every time you felt your nerves start to calm down. You hissed as you flew near the water now, aiming for any of the boats that shot at the clan.
For a split second you were able to catch a glimpse of yourself in the water. You were terrifying. Your eyes had gone completely wide, pupils so constricted to the point where they were almost gone. The sneer on your lips didn’t aid in making you look less terrorizing; you were absolutely feral.
You didn’t linger on your appearance for too long, though,  as you had come in contact with one of the avatars, their bullets slightly grazing your shoulder. You yelped as you banked hard in order to get away from them, your adrenaline the only thing stopping you from feeling any immediate pain.
It stung, bad, as you drew your bow, aiming directly for their heart. You let go without a moment’s hesitation, watching as the demon slid off of his ikran and into the water. You yelled in fury, your mind still unable to process your recent actions.
Your ears perked up at the sound of rapid gunfire to your side, your eyes growing even wider as you recognized the electric blue colors of your mother’s ikran. You turned sharply, almost hitting the side of the ship as you willed your banshee to get to your mother’s position.
“Mom!” You yelled, bow drawn as you aimed for another one of the demons.
Her head turned instantly at the sound of your voice, her face blanketed in fear and worry. She had no time to scold you for being on the battleground, her attention concentrated on ambushing the sky people.
You watched as your arrow soared straight into the avatar’s chest, his limp body plunging into the water like bait. The pain in your shoulder had started to make itself known again, yet you pushed forward in battle. You weren’t gonna let a minor injury get in the way of your rescue mission.
Though, your streak of undefeated shots had to be ended sooner or later. You hadn’t seen the boat from underneath you, and they landed a shot to your ikran’s leg. You heard her screech, and the both of you rapidly barreled into the ocean.
“[Y/N]!” You heard your mother yell before you were surrounded by water.
Your ikran, though injured, had been able to pull herself out of the water and fly to safety. You quickly followed, gasping for air as you swam to the surface. You didn’t waste any time in finding land, and you moved fast in order to get cover.
You were vulnerable now to the enemy’s attacks, no longer having the advantage of being in the air or wielding a bow. You leaned against the rocks, looking out for gunships while simultaneously catching your breath. The weight of fatigue was starting to hit you now, and you feared that your body would soon succumb to the exertion you had put yourself through.
The battle prayer to Eywa rang in your head, the words of the Great Mother slowly pushing you to move forward. Tirea oeyä maway livu, Ma Eywa. Calm my spirit, Eywa.
You groaned, your eyes closed as you forced yourself to stand. All hope was not lost, as in the distance you spotted the familiar dark blue of your sister’s skin. You called for an ilu and dove quickly, swimming as fast as you could to Kiri and the others.
“Kiri!” You yelled as you neared them, your heart pounding in relief.
She turned, her eyes recognizing you as soon as she saw you. “Sister!”
Your reunion with her would not be now, however, as an ikran had plucked her up right in front of you before you’d even been able to wrap your arms around her. You yelled, your voice nearly going hoarse, and whatever tiredness your body felt was soon melted away by the bubbling rage within you.
“No!” You screamed, and you moved to chase after her but were stopped by an iron grip around your arm.
You hissed as you turned to face whoever was stopping you from saving your sister. Ao’nung pulled you in, his eyes scanning over your face as he tried to tell you to fall back. You stood now on the remnants of a destroyed boat, though you would much rather be on your way to hunt whoever had stolen your sister from you.
“Let me go!” You yelled at the Metkayinan boy, your other hand coming up to yank his hold off of you. “I need to get to the demon ship, now!”
“And let you die?” He argued back. “No, I won’t allow it.”
“Who the hell do you think you are?” You spat, your tone as venomous as your stare. “Who are you to decide that for me?”
“That does not matter! I will not let you go in there unarmed!” He fought back, both of his hands now gripping your forearms.
You hissed at him again, your body on the brink of lashing out. Was he out of his mind? Your siblings were in danger, now more than ever. He could not keep you here, you weren’t going to allow it. You thrashed, exerting yourself to the max as you tried to free yourself from his hold.
“[Y/N], please,” Rotxo spoke up, his expression filled with concern. “Ao’nung is right, it is too dangerous for you to go in there alone!”
“I do not care!” You roared. “Kiri was just taken, right before our eyes! If I do not get to her now she could die! What don’t you understand about that?”
They flinched at your voice, and that gave you the opportunity to finally free yourself from Ao’nung. Your head whipped in his direction, your glare shooting daggers into his skull. He moved to grab you again, but you were swift in avoiding his movements. You were about to jump back into the water and swim to the demon ship before you caught sight of someone from your peripheral.
You turned, your breath hitching as you watched your brothers hastily guide an ilu to a desolate island. You didn’t have to say another word before the three of you swam hurriedly to them, your legs burning as you forced yourself to move faster.
You climbed up the rocks, not caring if your knees and palms were scrapped by the jagged edges. You opened your mouth to call out to them, but stopped as soon as you registered the scene in front of you. Your heart dropped, and you could feel yourself shake as emotion after emotion overwhelmed your body.
On the ground lay Neteyam, his body jerking as he fought to maintain his breath. There was a scarlet wound on his chest, blood continuously leaking out of him as Lo’ak did his best to stop it from flowing any further. You nearly lost balance as you dropped down, holding your brother’s head away from the hard rock and onto your lap.
“What happened?” You demanded, your eyes frantically examining his current state. “What happened?”
“‘Was shot,” Neteyam murmured, the action clearly taking a toll on him.
“Shut up, damnit,” You hissed at him, your tone fluctuating from anger to concern to fear. “Do not exert yourself for Eywa’s sake!”
“We went back for Spider,” Lo’ak said to you as he continued to put pressure on your brother’s wound. “Neteyam he- he got,”
He was panicking now, his breath coming in short. You were trying your best to remain sane, though the situation you were in only aided in making you feel worse. Your sisters were being held hostage by those demons, and now your worst fear had suddenly come to life.
Your mouth went dry as you tried to focus, your ears ringing from the forced concentration. You couldn’t think straight, and the inconsistent beat of your heart was preventing you from doing anything precisely. Somewhere in the distance you heard your mother and father, their cries of panic suddenly filling the grief-stricken atmosphere.
You had no time to acknowledge them though, as you were solely focused on Neteyam’s condition. There was blood – so much blood that you started to feel lightheaded from the sight. Your hands had come up behind his back, your palms covering the exit point of his wound.
The sky above you was grey, the bright blues no longer gracing Awa’atlu. Eclipse was near, and the smoke around you had only added to the lifelessness of the Great Mother’s land. Your brother still struggled to maintain his breath, his pupils dilating more and more the harder he tried to remain conscious.
You couldn’t think, you couldn’t speak. Your body was operating on auto-pilot, your mind blocking out as many distractions as it could. You hung your head low, feeling hot tears starting to form. You prayed every prayer to Eywa, begging her to spare your brother. It could not be his time yet; it would be too cruel.
Your father’s hand came up to cup your brother’s face, and you had never seen him more broken in your entire life. Neteyam was begging now, begging to go home. Your real home. Home to the fortress of the Omatikaya, home to the forests of Eywa, home to his family.
“I know, I know,” You father breathed out, the pain in his heart spreading to his expression. “It’s okay, we’re going home.”
Neteyam looked around him now, his eyes darting from one person to another. His gaze landed on you before he spoke up, his voice so weak that it broke your heart.
“Dad, I,” He finally let out.
You waited for him to finish his sentence. You waited for what felt like an eternity. You waited and waited and waited. But his reply never came, only the deathly silence of loss filling his being. You didn’t want to believe it. It was not right, this loss.
You blinked slowly, your breath so slow that it felt like someone had knocked you over. Your mind had registered Neteyam’s death almost instantly, but your heart – oh Eywa, your heart. Your heart was heavy, filled with so much sorrow that it nearly broke you.
Your world had shifted the moment your brother passed, and it felt wrong. Neteyam’s spirit was with the Great Mother now; you couldn’t battle anyone for his soul back, couldn’t bargain with any Tsahik for more time. He was gone.
Your mother wailed the moment she realized your brother had passed, and her screams of agony pierced your heart the same way his death had. You felt your shoulder slump, your hands slipping from your brother’s back as you no longer tried to stop the bleeding.
Your auto-pilot had been switched then, the reality of your world crashing in on you. You felt like you were about to break, like you were about to shatter into a million pieces. Your head was spinning, so much to the point where you nearly fell as you slightly backed away from your brother’s lifeless body.
Your sweet, beautiful, kind-hearted big brother was gone. You felt like you were a child again, waiting for Neteyam to tell you that this was all just a nightmare. Eclipse had finally set, the world around you going dark as the fires continued to blaze.
Your family was frantic now, your father trying to get your mother to stay strong, Lo’ak disassociating from the world around him. You cried then, cried like you would never be able to cry again. You placed your forehead against your brother’s cold one, your screams scratching your throat.
You cried out for Neteyam, cried out for your mighty brother. He was the glue that held your family together, and without him you didn’t know how any of you would be able to live on. The others just watched over you as you sobbed, their eyes so full of pity.
You didn’t care if they saw you as weak now, you were hurting so badly. May Eywa never let them experience this kind of loss, because you could feel a piece of you dying alongside your brother the longer you continued to cry. You felt a pair of hands come up on your shoulders, and you tried to push them away with whatever might you had left in you.
“[Y/N],” You heard Ao’nung say, his calloused hands still gentle with you as you continued to break down. “[Y/N] you must rest.”
You lifted your head, finally seeing that your family, as well as Spider, had disappeared. You looked at Tsireya, and the look in her eyes had told you everything you needed to know. Stay here, please, her gaze said.
You took a deep breath in, and it felt like you were breathing again for the first time. You wanted to go against whatever orders your father had told them to give you, but you knew that acting rashly would only worsen things for you. So you stayed, glued to your brother’s side as you mourned your loss.
Ao’nung had not left your side either, his worriedness for your wellbeing keeping him attentive. You couldn’t tell if he was doing this to help your father or if he was doing this to keep you from going insane, but still it gave you a sense of comfort – however cruel it might be to long for it during this time.
He didn’t say anything to you, only rubbing your shoulders to keep you grounded and aware. If this had been any other situation, you would have already distanced yourself from him. You and Ao’nung weren’t friends, though you weren’t exactly horrible towards each other either. Either way, you didn’t feel the urge to yell at him to go away; instead his presence soothed you, slowly getting you to calm your nerves.
You leaned into him, and he took you in with open arms. Though your heart was still heavy, your body had seeked the warmth that it desperately needed. He matched his breathing with yours, aiding to quell the tensenes of your body.
You watched as Tsireya and Rotxo tried to clean up whatever they could off of your brother’s body, their movements light and gentle. You held his cold hand, your hands coming up to close his eyes. He looked peaceful now, as if he were just resting.
You would have believed so, had it not been for his dried blood on your hands. Your bottom lip quivered, and you closed your eyes once more as you fought to stay composed.
You felt Ao’nung’s thumb rubbing circles on your arm, his other hand clasped around your free hand. This was an intimate gesture between mated people, you knew, but you didn’t care. His comfort gave you an escape from the harsh realities of life. You felt yourself drifting off, your body too tired to remain awake.
“Sleep if you want to,” Ao’nung whispered. “You and your brother are safe here.”
You sniffled slightly as you nodded your head, your eyes heavy from crying. “I must pray over him first. I must protect him this one last time.”
He only nodded, still keeping his arms around you as you brought Neteyam’s hand up to your heart.
“Oel ngati kameie, ma tsmukan, ulte ngaru seiyi irayo. Ngari hu Eywa salew tirea, tokx 'ì'awn slu Na'viyä hapxì.” You said in a hushed tone, the others bowing their heads as you recited the death prayer.
I see you, brother, and I thank you. Your spirit will run with Eywa, while your body will remain and become part of the People.
You leaned back into Ao’nung, your hand finally clasping around his as well. You squeezed his hand, tilting your head slightly to look at him. You closed your eyes, bowing your head to him.
“I see you.” You whispered.
He held you closer, his voice the last thing you heard before slumber had taken over your body. “I see you.”

STARRING. ao'nung x na'vi!reader
CONTAINING. fluff, established relationship (mates), no use of y/n, living together with ao'nung, time skips, mama ronal
WARNING(S). mentions of blood! mentions of violence!
WORD COUNT. 1.7k
synopsis: ao'nung's sudden change in attitude ends in a heated argument that lasted for days; cold shoulder, silent treatment, absolutely no interaction between you two. however, he couldn't risk you leave his life the longer you don't talk to each other so he pleads and asks you to give him another chance.
translation: marui pod - metkayinan shelter/house, skxawng - moron/idiot
Tumblr media
after the talk you and ao'nung had during breakfast, and after placing away your bowls.
you and ao’nung stepped out of your marui pod, making your way to his family’s pod. his mother ronal, your mentor in your healing duties; just finished up treating a na’vi as they stepped out.
you two immediately bow lightly signing your greetings to her with your fingers from your forehead outwards,
“good to see you two, what made you visit?” she asked approaching you two at the entrance of the hut, which made ao’nung slightly nervous at the thought of explaining what happened.
ao’nung did his best to swallow his nervousness and put on a brave face, however his mother immediately noticed giving him a lecture-like stare so he immediately spoke up. “mother, i must tell you something…” ronal tilts her head ushering him to continue with his words, eyes slightly widening as she glances to you a bit worriedly but then she suddenly smiled which ao'nung looked at her confused as what he was about to tell was definitely not something to smile about.
"are you with child?" ronal steps forward placing a gentle hand on your belly, as she gave you a small but bright smile. her actions immediately make you turn red and glance to the ground in embarrassment. ao'nung's eyes widen as well, but he smirked and coughed out a bit.
"no mother! she's not... not yet atleast..." ao'nung mutters the last part making you blush harder as giving him a side-eye and i nudge him hard in the ribs making him wince. "a-anyways, mother..." he continues.
his mother smirks at you teasingly, making you look down immediately to your feet as your ears twitch.
“i started an argument between us... and i am here to ask you for consultation and help. please let me improve my attitude.” he says cautiously as ronal’s eyes widen the more he spoke, her demeanor switching compared to a while ago making him feel small as soon as his mother approached him.
ronal definitely did not expect that, maybe she did because she was aware of ao'nung's attitude, but she never expected you to be the one who would experience it first hand.
ronal looks to you, her ears tilting downward. “my child… what happened?” she softly says as she brushes your hair lightly, and pats your head.
ronal invites you inside as you tell her what happened as she wanted to comfort you two, knowing how this could affect you two if anything went wrong or worse and as you tell exactly what happened her face flicked a variation of emotions glancing back between the two of you.
“alright, listen to me son. starting today i will be disciplining you into doing meditation and exercises to help you improve… this type of behavior is looked down upon. especially if you're mate is the one you happened to- which it is.” ronal trails off, placing a hand on her forehead continuing to explain to ao’nung.
seeing that ao’nung was listening attentively really made you happy that he’s really willing to improve himself for you.
Tumblr media
you’ve been picking up and dropping off ao’nung when he had to attend his sessions, which made him happy that you were doing that for him. during times you didn't have a shift to help with the injured you'd just wait and meditate at the shore or check out some seashells on the sand
Tumblr media
making your way to one of ronal’s treatment huts, to do your tsakarem duties. receiving and treating the injured na’vi hunters that came by. some arriving with major but not fatal wounds, while others with just light bruises or scratches that were easily patched up.
“you need to go to the emergency hut, now!” a worried hunter, which you recognized as one of ao’nung’s hunting companions that he usually hunts with; saying it in a panicked voice to you. you immediately wrap up the bandage on the hunter i was treating as they felt empathy and said that i can go.
you stood up to your feet, tossing whatever you were holding to somewhere in the hut as you swiftly ran outside, immediately heading to the emergency hut.
'please, please, be okay... oh eywa.' were the thoughts running in your head. as you felt so anxious about what could've happened
your heart broke at the sight of ao'nung on the floor. body bruised in multiple areas, blood dripping down to his ankles from a graze in his upper leg. but seeing he had the guts to smile nervously at you meant he was completely fine, and most likely got into a fight rather than getting injured from the hunt.
making a sound with my teeth as you inhaled simila, smacking his shoulder muttering a small 'you skxawng.' and being careful not to hit ao’nung’s bruised areas or wounds. as you felt the stares of other na’vi hunters who helped take your injured body here.
after bowing your respect and signing your fingers from your forehead, you motion your hand outwards to make them leave and give you and ao'nung privacy. you quickly make use of the supplies inside the hut. you grabbed the basket taking some woven-like gauze pads to stop your bleeding. adding pressure, ao’nung hissed at the pain.
“what happened? ...talk to me.” you asked him squeezing his hand, but he stayed silent avoiding your gaze as his ears went down, so you followed up: “fine. hope your wounds self-heal then—”,
”i was done with my hunting for today, and some of the hunters that are gonna be hunting tomorrow were talking about you…” ao'nung cut you mid-sentence.
”what did they say?” you softly asked, wiping more of his bleeding area to stop it. you wrapped his leg up gently after cleaning the wound.
ao'nung sighed deeply, his tail wagging slowly. "what did they say...?" you pleaded to know. ”that they were going to be the one to snatch you... if you leave me, and then i ended up scolding them; and they did it back to me and i ended up punching out of anger… got a bit heated since they were three, and here i am.”
you stayed silent, my ears turning down but your tail lightly swished which ao'nung noticed.
you sigh as your grip on the gauze pad loosened. you looked at him in an expression he never liked, and you grabbed some ointment to rub into the bruised areas to help him feel better.
“are you disappointed in me?” he asked in a tone as if he was almost whispering. ao'nung looked up to you with tears threatening to fall out, which you immediately smiled at and gently wiped using your hand without the ointment.
”for what? defending me? ...no. that was lovely to hear about." you start off. "but-" you say and got caught off by him asking a "but???" which you laughed at "but... losing control and punching first, yes i am. you should've just let them be, a scolding would've been more proper, or...” you said which caught him off-guard.
”i’m sorry… wait- what?” ao'nung asked a bit in disbelief if he heard you right, you weren't exactly disappointed in him getting into a fight... but more disappointed of being the first to punch?
”you should’ve taken a punch first, so it would be self-defense no matter how bad you beat them up…” you said which solved ao'nung's thoughts.
”...i didn’t think you’d be disappointed in that, my love.” he started to laugh, but slightly hissing as his abdomen tensed up from laughing which you inspected to have a bruise, hopefully no internal bleeding.
you lightly grazed your hand over the area, and thankfully he didn't react badly meaning it was just a bruise.
"you know... if word gets out. you might get in trouble with your mother if she hears about this." you tease him to which he nervously laughs and shook his head at.
"and come on, i bet they look worse." you proudly say, knowing how ao'nung is tough as he looks. which makes him proud and have him wagging his tail as he loved how your proud you sounded
Tumblr media
"so... have you thought about it?" ao'nung asks you as you start to unwrap his bandages to check his wound healing. you two were back at your house, came home together after you picked him up from a session. "about what?" you throw the bloody bandage to a basket to discard later on as you clean his wound, seeing that the skin is already regenerating beautifully.
"you know..." he trails off. "about what, ao?" you ask a bit sternly as you wrap a new on his wounded thigh.
"you know what i'm talking about, love..." he says as he trails a gentle hand on your thigh. as you look to his hand on you, you realized what he was referring to, you swat his hand away. as you stood up and crouch behind him to check the other bruises on his body.
"you're injured." ao'nung's ears perked up at your response, it wasn't a yes... but it definitely wasn't a no. "does that mean... i can?" he asks, wanting to hear a proper answer from you, as he lifts himself up to turn around and face you.
you laugh softly at his action, as you slowly nodded. in a second he already has a hand on your collarbone, but you quickly swat it again making him pout. "when you're all healed. what if your skin tears while we're at it?" you laugh at him, but he quickly shakes his head.
"if your mother knew that we... while you were injured i'd probably get demoted." you tease him,
"my skin will be fine." he replies instantly, "no." you reply, as he immediately sat properly, not wanting to touch you as you said, he sighed.
"alright, i'll make sure to get healed as soon as possible..." making you smile and pat his head, "i don't want you to still injured, so be patient." you say,
"you have my word, my love." you continued, as he whips his face up to look at you with wide eyes. he grabbed your hand in an instant, squeezing it gently.
"did you just-?" he asks, making you nod and laugh. "yes, my love?" you say it again, as he wraps his arms around you and peppers your face with kisses.
you two cuddled all night, as ao'nung was stoked hearing you call him 'my love' again. he was so determined to finish his sessions, and ofcourse... heal as soon as possible.

waking up felt extremely weird. you felt like you had taken the longest, heaviest nap ever. slowly opening your eyes to adjust to the light, you take in your surroundings.
you're in a shallow hole, you noticed as you looked around, and there was dirt around you. you look up at what you would think was the sky and see something else that you remember seeing before. you see the leaf covering that the omatikaya place over their passed-away loved ones. you usually see these leaf coverings from the outside. this caused a slight panic to settle in your chest?
why are you here? did you die? what the hell is going on?
you reached your arm up, still feeling weak from not moving your joints in you don't even know how long. you slowly press against the leaf covering, pushing it away from the hole and exposing the sun to your eyes. you shielded yourself before you felt a shadow standing over your form. it was mo'at. the tsahik of the omatikaya clan.
"tsahik?" it was the first word you said, and it caused mo'at to press a hand to her mouth in shock as tears sprang to her eyes. her granddaughter, who had passed away two years ago, was looking up to her from her grave that she had pushed open herself. the tsahik didn't understand. how could the great mother take you away for two years and let their family mourn and grieve your death just to send you back to them two years later?
this made no sense.
"come with me, my child," was the only thing mo'at said as she reached out to grab your hand. she intertwined your fingers, wanting to hold her granddaughter as close as possible, fearing losing you again. she helped you out of the hole slowly as you still had to get used to moving your arms and legs around again.
"ma tsahik?" you asked the older woman standing before you. "what happened to me?"
she didn't turn to look at you as she said in a hushed, almost hurt, tone of voice, "you died two years ago," you were left speechless. you didn't know what to say, so you didn't say anything. you tried to think back on what happened before you woke up from your 'nap,' but you couldn't remember anything. no matter how hard, no memories or thoughts came to your head.
"do not try to work your brain so hard trying to find answers that will come to you, my child. you'll hurt yourself." the tsahik jokes.
you looked up at her, seeing the slight smile on her face but missing the faint trace of tears in her eyes. you let out a small laugh at her joke.
"hey! i may not remember anything from before, but i know i was not stupid before i died." you laughed along, but this caused the tsahik to stop in her tracks, turning to you.
"say that again." she said, grabbing hold of your shoulders, her face painted with worry.
"i was not dumb before i died?" you said, confused at her sudden actions.
"no, child! the other thing you said."
"oh, that i do not remember anything from before i died?" your words were cautious because you didn't know if what you were saying was offensive.
"we must get you back to the camps." was all she said as she turned, grabbing your hand, but this time she walked with urgency. her pace was hard to keep up with due to your aching body, but you somehow managed.
once you started to enter your native territory, you felt eyes everywhere. everyone was looking at you. you get it; you died and came back, but did everyone have to stare at you like that? it wasn't like you were the olo'eyktans daughter before you died.
mo'at brought you to the center of the high grounds camp, and everyone gathered around to see what announcement their tsahik had for them.
she didn't have some big speech planned. she just held your hand and said to the clan's people.
"the great-mother has returned my granddaughter!" everyone was cheering and happy. this confused the sully family. the past two years after your death have been hard. the natives completely annihilated every rda soldier, lab, and scientist in sight. it was an unexpected, coordinated attack between the forest na'vi, the ice na'vi, and, surprisingly, even the ash na'vi. due to transportation, the water na'vi couldn't make it to fight the war, but they were able to send over some of their finest healers.
let's just say no ships are coming to pandora ever again. jake made sure to send a message to the humans back on earth that if they ever sent one of their own to his planet again, he would single-handedly rip them each limb from limb. that was a promise, not a threat. humans had not gotten a chance to respond to jake's words. right after he delivered his messages, he pulled the pin of a grenade and walked out of the ship, it and the rest of the camp's base exploding behind them. although they didn't get to respond, they sure did receive the message, and earth now no longer had an avatar program. as the na'vi walked away from the war, they were victorious once and for all.
neytiri was quietly braiding her youngest daughter's hair when she heard the cheers and celebration of the clan outside her home. and then that's when her three older children came running into their hut, screaming and crying, speaking simultaneously. it sounded as if they were speaking gibberish.
"hey, hey kids calm down. what is going on?" jake asked his children, who looked like they were in distress. he was sitting in the home's living area, sharpening his blade as he had nothing else to do.
"Y/N HAS RETURNED." it was kiri who got the words out first.
neytiri, jake, and tuk all froze. there was no way. the great mother had taken you right in front of their eyes. you have been gone for two years; it can't be. neytiri had visited your grave just last night. there you lay, closed-eyed and lifeless in front of her, but as she walked out of her home and into the center of the clan's gathering there, you stood. you looked skinny and malnourished, but you were standing, breathing, alive.
neytiri couldn't believe her eyes. she thought she was dreaming as she approached you slowly. she held your face in her hands, and as soon as she felt your skin against her own, she broke down in tears, engulfing you in the tightest hug you had ever felt.
"ow." you said when she squeezed a bit too hard. this caused the woman to release you quickly, as she had forgotten how fragile you were right now.
"ma ite, you have returned to me, oh great mother, you have answered my prayers. thank you, thank you, thank you," she said as she pulled you into a hug again, this time softer, as if she was afraid that if she held you too rough, you would break in her arms.
you, on the other hand, were nervous. granddaughter? ite? what is going on right now? there's no way you're the tsahik's granddaughter. you couldn't imagine what your mother would be like as a person, let alone any of your family. all you knew was that you were from the forest, but maybe eywa brought you back to the wrong part of the forest? you couldn't even look at the woman before you and pinpoint a resemblance. you had four fingers; some of her children had five, and you weren't like them. only one other child had four tingers, and you noticed it was the eldest son.
when you made eye contact with him, his eyes softened. neteyam hadn't looked into his twin's eyes in ages. he missed you like no other. yeah, neytiri had it hard losing her first daughter, but neteyam had his twin's life ripped from her body right in front of his eyes. at that moment, it was almost like he felt the bullets go through his chest as well. that's how great the pain of losing you felt. but looking at you now, he felt like his heart was whole again. but there was this look in your eye. you looked different. not physically. you looked at neteyam differently. almost like you didn't recognize him.
mo'at had hoped that seeing your home and your family would cause your memories to come flooding back, but the look on your face was not giving her that impression.
"i am sorry if i am ruining a happy moment…." you spoke up, causing everyone to immediately silence themselves so they wouldn't miss a word you said. but you didn't say anything that caused any happiness or joy in anyone. instead, your words scared everyone.
"–but i do not know who you guys are. i am not the tsahik's granddaughter and miss, i am not your daughter. i am sorry but i think you have things confused. please excuse me." you pulled yourself away from the woman who claimed to be your mother, but she tightened her grip on your hands.
"ma y/n, what do you mean? you do not remember me? i am your mother, your sa'nu. you are ma ite, my sweet girl." neytiri was taken aback. this isn't right, you're supposed to come back, and then everything goes back to normal. but the great mother has returned you with no memories at all. to you, neytiri was just a stranger claiming to be your mother.
the next person to approach you was the olo'eyktan himself. you couldn't bring yourself to look him in the eyes because of how his vast form intimidated you.
"itetsyip. maybe if you come home and see some of your things then you'll remember." he said, placing his hand on your back and walking you in the direction of what you assumed was their home. you quickly remove yourself from the two adults who had you in their arms.
"i am sorry but i am not your daughter. i do not want to enter your home to look at whatever things you think are mine. just because i have no memory of my family does not mean you get to take me away from them. the great mother may have returned me to my body with no memories but that does not mean you get to put whatever you want in my head, trying to get me to believe you. i only just returned. do you not understand how overwhelming this is?" you were scared. everything was happening so fast.
you just found out that you had been dead for two years, and now these people are trying to push this life in you that you know god and well that wasn't yours. you don't know who these people are, and they were making absurd accusations. maybe you really were in the wrong part of the forest.
"y/n stop joking around. do you not remember us? you are neteyam's twin sister for crying out loud. how can you be cruel enough to pull a joke like this? have we not suffered enough?" lo'ak was fed up with this whole situation. you were his sister, dammit. how could you not remember that? neteyam is your twin. you, tuk, and kiri were sisters. they're standing right in front of you, just begging you to run into their arms so they can embrace you.
you looked at the teenage boy oddly. like he had three heads. he doesn't know what he's talking about. these people are so pushy and demanding; you can't come from a family like this. you thought about it, and you knew they would be able to catch you if you tried to make a break for it, but you didn't want to be here anymore.
lost in your thoughts, you didn't notice the family's eldest son walking up to you. he gently grabbed your shoulders, looking directly into your eyes that were identical to his.
"you could not have forgotten about your twin brother have you, sister?" his words were soft. they sounded broken like he was hurting inside. from what? you don't know, but this isn't your problem to deal with. these people obviously lost somebody, but it is not you. you are not from here. so you hatched a plan in your head.
"maybe i just need to walk around the forest and re-familiarize myself. it–" you choked on your words, not even wanting to say it.
"it could help me regain my memories. and then we can be a family again, yeah?" you look into the boy's eyes, noticing them shining a bit brighter. you gave him hope.
that wasn't your intention. you just wanted to leave, so to make yourself 100x more believable, you hugged him. with all the strength you had in your body, which wasn't much.
everyone was shocked. even neteyam, but he didn't want to lose this moment, so he hugged you back tight, so you could feel his love but not too tight because of how weak you are. you pulled back from the hug, bowing slightly to everyone before you walked in the direction that you and the tsahik came from so you wouldn't seem lost. you looked back before you could fully disappear into the trees. eyes meeting those of the people who claimed to be your family. looking at them, you didn't even see where you would fit in. they already looked whole. so you managed a small fake smile, sent them a small wave, and continued your trek through the forest, trying to get as far away from the omatikaya people as possible.
by the time they realize you're gone, you'll already be way too far for them to find you. you wandered around, wondering why the great-mother returned you like this? did you not deserve to keep your memories?
almost as if she heard your question, the great mother flashed an image in your head. it was different shades of forest green, with indigo spots placed randomly around its body, looking almost like flowers. its wings were majestic, but you couldn't pinpoint what you had seen until it landed right in front of you, keeping you from walking off a cliff you hadn't even realized you were walking towards.
you couldn't believe that after two years of being gone, your ikran, syulang, was still alive. you named her syulang because, yes, of course, she looks like she's covered in flowers, but unlike other ikrans, syu was quiet, elegant, almost undetectable in the air. you would never hear her flying anywhere, and nobody knew why. the air would run smoothly over her wings, completely muting the sound of the wind rushing by in comparison to the usual loud, noisy ikrans that everyone else had tamed. syulang was delicate, like a flower.  "syu! hi girl, oh my goodness you’re alive." you said as you created your tsaheylu with her for the first time in years. it felt like the first time all over again, except without the part where she tried to kill you. syulang was happy to see you as well, nuzzling into you. "syulang, we have to go. right now. come on girl, take me home." when you said this, syulang made a noise of confusion but allowed you to mount her anyways. the two of you took off into the night, the eclipse making it too dark for anyone to notice that an ikran was out flying. not like they would hear syulang anyways.
Tumblr media
it's been hours. you still hadn't come back from the forest, and the sullys were getting worried. everyone was tense and stressed until kiri spoke up.
"she ran away," the teenage girl hadn't even realized it was herself who had spoken. she looked up and made eye contact with everyone in her family, repeating herself.
"she ran away, and she is not going to come back." tears sprung to her eyes as she just wanted her sister to return home. it was like eywa was dangling the most precious thing to them right in their faces, and every time they reached out, she snatched it away.
"she would not do that. she said she was just going on a walk. kiri have some faith in her. sure she did not remember us but she would not have hugged me if she was just gonna run away. she said she would come home." neteyam argued. he didn't want to believe that you had left them again, but that's what it was starting to seem like.
"we will check the ikrans. if hers is still there, then she's around here somewhere. we can go out and look for her." syulang had not left your family's ikran nest since the day you had passed. she was too depressed to do anything with her hunter being dead. the sullys made sure to take care of her for you, knowing you wouldn't want syu to suffer like you did. honestly, syulang was the closest thing the sullys had to you after you died. they'd take turns taking care of her at night, bringing tuk every now and then so she could see syulang too.
the walk to the family ikran nest was full of arguing. kiri said that neteyam and lo'ak had to come to their senses and realize that you were gone again. the boys refused to believe that you would leave again, but as they approached the ikran nest, seeing syulang's corner abandoned gave them the answer they fought over.
you had left.
"i told you she left. i mean for eywa's sake you guys bombarded her as soon as she got here!" kiri yelled at her family. she knew this was just displaced anger and that she didn't really mean it, but she was tired of holding her tongue.
"don’t you dare say we bombarded her! she is my twin who died in front of me! eywa forgive me for wanting to hug her after she's been dead for two years!" neteyam yelled back at kiri; this just caused a huge family argument to break out.
tuk, who was standing to the side watching her family fall apart, couldn't help but cry. she just wanted her family to go back to normal. "stop fighting…" it came out as a whisper, her family arguing so loud that they hadn't even heard her. so she decided to make them hear her.
"STOP FIGHTING!!" everyones' heads snapped at the youngest sully child. little tuk had just raised her voice at them for the first time ever.
"give me a break! we are all hurt okay?! us, y/n, grandma, the clan? everyone is sad! we did bombard her! she has not been here for two years. we should have let her settle in first. i get it. you guys miss her. so do i, but ma sa'nu when you talked to her she looked so confused and scared. and nete, when she was hugging you her eyes were so empty. she looked so lost. we scared her away. we had a chance to make things normal again, to be a family again and all you guys could do was be selfish and think about yourselves!! i just miss her. i want her to come back, i–" tuk couldn't even finish what she was saying as her sobs overcame her. neytiri scooped up her youngest daughter, cradling her in her arms, trying to soothe her harsh cries.
tuk had just lectured their entire family, and nobody could be mad at her because she was right. neytiri realized that she had been pushy. jake and lo'ak, too, but it wasn't because they were trying to scare you. they just missed you so much they couldn't contain themselves. they had been selfish, putting their feelings over yours once again. it was the same way they lost you last time, and now, who knows where you went or when you left. the family just remained in their ikrans nest that night, needing all the warmth they could get as they all just held each other and cried.
Tumblr media
you didn't think you could fly any longer. it had already been a few days, and you didn't see the forest anymore. you already didn't have a lot of energy due to you being dead for two years, but it didn't help that you left with absolutely no supplies to survive on your own. everything was starting to look the same. you felt like you were going in circles, seeing the same islands over and over. the ocean water was beautiful, you had to admit, but right now, all you could think about was if it would cushion your fall if you fell off your ikran. you knew it was only moments before you passed out from exhaustion.
the world started to spin as if it wasn't already, your vision was in and out, and you felt sleepy. you were exhausted and couldn't fly another second. as your body completely shut down, you fell off your ikran and into the waters below you, your tsaheylu disconnecting in the process.
had it not been for the hunters out at three brothers rock, you would have died. they noticed your ikran flying in the direction of their mainland, assuming you were a visitor and that they would meet you when they got back to the island, but they knew something was wrong when they noticed your form plummeting from the extreme height, completely motionless.
they only took a few minutes to have you on the rock. they were nervous about doing cpr on you because you looked to be a teenager.
"ao'nung, come over here!" the hunter in charge called over the olo'eyktans son.
"what is it?" he said, noticing the tension in the air. he looked down, seeing you unconscious on the ground. his eyes widened. where had you come from? pushing that question aside, ao'nung took in your appearance, noticing how thin and weak you looked. he didn't know what it was, but it stirred something in him. you reminded him of his little sister, tsireya. if this was her, he would want one of the hunters to save her, so he put one arm under your shoulders and another under your leg and slid into the water, calling out to his ilu.
"i'm bringing her to my mother immediately. she looks weak. i don't even know if she'll live, but i have to try." he said before taking off as fast as he could to the mainland. he noticed above him your ikran was flying at the same pace as him, probably too worried to leave your side.
when ao'nung got home holding an unconscious forest na'vi, he received a lot of weird glances from the clan's people, but he didn't care. he rushed home, looking for his mother.
pushing the flap open to see his mother had just put the last of her herbs away, ao'nung called out to his mom.
"sa'nu! help! i– she needs help. please." hearing her son in distress, ronal was quick to give him her attention. instructing to lay the girl on the floor, she reminded herself to ask him where he had found her, but right now, she prioritized saving your life. she tried a healing remedy that would've usually worked, but you remained motionless. ronal put her ear to your chest, your heart was beating, but it was very faint. she knew only one thing she could do now, and it was the riskiest healing remedy known by all tsahiks. it has a minimal success rate but has healed some of the deadliest injuries known to eywa.
once the remedy was made entirely, ronal told ao'nung to get out and find his father and sister before coming back. the boy nodded, walking out to find his sister.
when he spotted tsireya riding on the ilus with her friends, he called her over. tsireya noticed her brother looked a bit more anxious than usual, so she excused herself and walked over.
"brother what is wro– oh!" ao'nung pulled his little sister into the tightest hug he could muster. she remained shocked as her brother wasn't really one for physical affection at all unless it was from his mother.
"please just– don't die on me, okay? at least not anytime soon. promise me, okay?" he said, pulling back and grabbing her shoulders as he looked into his sister's eyes. she just nodded and walked alongside her brother, wondering what on earth had him shaken up like this.
upon retrieving his father, ao'nung returned with his father and his sister in tow. when they entered the tent, you were in ronal's arms, crying your heart out. the woman just looked up to her family, shushing them as she continued to provide you comfort. hearing your cries throughout their home hurt their hearts. you cried like you were hurt like you had experienced grave pain, and it was coming back to haunt you.
from this moment on, the family decided they would take you in. they didn't know who or where you were from, but they wanted to heal you of this pain. their hearts hurt hearing how much pain your heart had to endure. there's a reason why eywa brought you to them, and they were not about to let you go.
Tumblr media
you had been living amongst the metkayina clan for about half a year now. you weren't even recognizable from when you had arrived at the clan. when you got here, you were thin as a twig, you never had the energy to do anything, and you cried yourself to sleep every night. now, you had filled out your form, even gaining a bit of muscle from adapting to the metkayina ways. you had also completed your iknimaya, which meant you were allowed to get a tattoo. you choose to get two. the pain was well worth it, though, because once your leg sleeve and arm tattoo were complete, you couldn't have been happier.
you finally felt like your life was worth living again. you no longer cried yourself to sleep; instead, you snuck out with your brother and sister, going to the small island where all the young na'vi hang out. you were finally happy. the great mother had brought you home. she had returned you to your family.
the only odd thing was your dreams recently. you dreamed of the forest, of nantangs, woodsprites, and ikrans. things that have nothing to do with the metkayina. it was weird. you felt like eywa was trying to shove memories in your brain, but you were so at peace with your life that you disregarded it, too caught up, in reality, to be bothered by silly dreams.
you loved life on the beaches, in the sand, underwater, just taking in the beauty of awat'alu as you sat on a rock. at the same time, you watched ao'nung, tsireya, and rotxo playing on their ilus in the water. they were splashing each other, just taking time to be the teenagers they knew they'll never be again. you were about to cannonball in the water to join them when you all heard the horns of the clan being blown, announcing new arrivals.
you all stopped what you were doing, looking toward the screeches you heard. you knew that sound, that was bob, jake's ikran.
wait a minute… what?
whos jake?
‘jake sully’ said a voice in your head. you recognized it as she had spoken to you once before, but you couldn't remember where.
why is this name coming to your head right now? you felt your wrist being grabbed by your sister, tsireya. she dragged you to the beaches of your clan's home, where everyone else had gathered. you stood behind your father, tonowari, as you continued to think about the name that came to your head. who is jake sully, and why did you just remember his name?
"my children, ao'nung, tsireya, and–" tonowari paused, looking to his side at his children, realizing one was missing, until he turned around and realized you were just hiding behind him.
"–and my youngest, y/n, will teach your children the ways of our home, so you do not suffer the burden of being useless here," tonowari stepped aside, pushing you in front of him, so the family who had arrived could see you.
you looked up to make eye contact with the first person you spotted.
"tuktuk." the words were quiet from your mouth. the little girl, who had her head tucked into her mother's neck, perked up when she heard the nickname you used to call her.
"kiri, cut it out. that is not funny!" tuk said, looking at her sister, offended she would play a sick joke on her like that after they had just left their home.
jake and neytiri decided to move their family from the omatikaya clan, deciding that being there reminded them too much of you. it hurt to continue to live on the soil that you died on. so they up and moved their whole family elsewhere, flying towards warmer air and gorgeous waters. they fully expected to be able to find uturu with jake being toruk makto and their war being over. what they hadn't expected to see was their dead runaway daughter standing amongst a sea of teal na'vi.
slowly walking towards the family, tonowari called out to you, but ronal placed her hand on her mate's chest, telling him to shut up and watch what was happening.
"tuktuk," you repeated as you walked towards the girl. when tuk realized that the voice was coming from in front of her and not behind her, she turned her head around, her yellow eyes meeting yours.
"y/n!!" tuk practically dropped herself from her moms' arms, running up to you.
you met her halfway, falling to your knees, pulling your little sister into a hug, her face in your neck as you supported her head. as you looked at each one of them, their names, faces, and memories came back. you remembered everything.
"and you're neteyam, and lo'ak and kiri!" when your siblings heard you say their names, it was like a switch in them flipped. within seconds they were all in the sand hugging you and tuk, crying because you finally remembered them.
you pulled back from the hug, looking at the two people who hadn't joined the hug yet.
"sempu," you said, reaching your hand out to jake. he didn't even try to conceal his tears as he allowed himself to join his children in their hug.
your mother still stood there in awe. neytiri was scared. she was the reason you left last time and didn't want to scare you away again, so she just stood with tears rolling down her face, not knowing what to do. for the first time in her life, neytiri didn't know what to do.
you could see the hesitation in her eyes. but you were confused as to why. neytiri was the only one who treated you right before you died… so why is she the last to come to you.
"mom?" you called out to her, but she didn't move. did she not want you anymore? has she gotten used to the family without you?
you tried once more, refusing to lose your family again. "sa'nu, please." a tear rolled down your cheek, looking into your mother's eyes. you saw all the hurt and stress, everything she had to endure while you were gone.
hearing you call her sa'nu was the last push neytiri needed before she fell to her knees and joined her family's embrace. you have returned. you returned to your family, and you were safe. everyone pulled back from you, taking in your appearance. you had matured a lot since the last time they saw you. you and neteyam were about the same height now, but your muscles surpassed his due to all the swimming you do.
you noticed that he had noticed too, and you just nudged his shoulder with your own, "do not worry, twin, i will teach you everything you will need to know. maybe you will grow up to be big and strong like me," you teased your twin. neteyam rolled his eyes, laughing along with you.
"woah! y/n, you have a tattoo?" lo'ak asked as he looked at your left leg. you just laughed at his silly question. of course, that's the first thing he asks you.
"she has two! there's one on this arm as well," kiri said, holding out your right arm so they could see the tattoo that you had there as well.
"no fair, mom, i want a tattoo." tuk said, whining to her mother. neytiri laughed at her daughter's statement and just pet her head, moving her braids out her face. "maybe when you're older, tuk," she said.
"babygirl," your father grabbed your attention. "i just want you to know that we are all so sorry for how we treated you before you past–" you cut your father off, shaking your head.
"it is in the past. the great mother may have returned my memories but it is me who gets to choose which ones to remember. i want to leave the past behind me. i have found a new home here. new peace. a found family who loves me dearly. i don't want you guys to feel like you have to atone to anything. eywa has given us a new start, so i think we should welcome it with open arms instead of trying to mend that has already been healed," you really had matured in your time away from the sullys.
they all looked at one another. if that was what you wanted, they would be sure to leave the past in the past so they can embrace the chance to make things right with you.
you stood, the rest of the sullys following. you walked back over to tonowari and ronal, pulling them into a hug.
"just because my memories have returned does not mean that you are not my family anymore. you have all helped and healed me from wounds that i did not know i had so i can only thank you, sempu, sa'nu. you guys are my found family and i would not trade you for the world." smiling up at your other parents. Wow, this is gonna get confusing, but you were more than excited to have two families.
you looked over and pulled ao'nung and tsireya into the hug as well. "you guys, too, thank you so much," you said to your siblings. they couldn't do anything but hug you back. you may not be their biological blood, but they could care less. you are now one of their people. ronal and tonowari will always see you as their daughter, and ao'nung and tsireya will always see you as their sister. you will always be family to them.
you and tsireya decided to guide the sully family to their new home, as ronal had allowed them to stay. you noticed that lo'ak was eying your sister up quite a bit and decided that you would tease him about it later. you were just happy to finally feel at peace. you finally had the family, the life you had dreamed of.
you couldn't do anything except thank eywa for all the good she brought into your life.
‘you're welcome, my child.’ it was the same voice that you heard earlier. when you realized that she was responding to your thanks, if you finally clicked whose voice you were hearing.
it was eywa.
she was with you. she had always been. throughout this journey, she made sure to stick by your side. that was something that you couldn't be more grateful for.
‘be free my child, allow nothing from here on out to hold you back. you are meant to live a happy life, and now you are able to do so.’

Nothing could've ever prepared you for the scene you were witnessing. Ao’nung standing behind Lonä with his arms wrapped around her waist, head deep in her neck giving soft kisses, sniffing in her scent as she had a smile on her face giggling every time he placed a kiss.
“This can’t be happening,” you start to think to yourself trying every possible way to convince yourself that this was just a nightmare you were experiencing and that you would wake up soon.
But as you see him grip her hips tighter, your lips tremble a bit as you fight back a sob trying to escape your mouth, tears already falling down your cheeks as you see their lips touch as she brings her hand up to grip his hair, not wanting to see anymore, you turn and start running the direction of the Marui that the two of you once called home.
“Where did it all go wrong” is all you can think about as you enter the Marui. Sure Ao’nung has been distant lately but you thought it could be fixed, you had hoped that the love the two of you had together would be strong enough.
The way he held Lonä was the same way he held you when you first got together. You start to think of all the nights that you ate alone, remembering times when the two of you would talk and joke around each other.
The nights you spent curled up waiting for him to come home, only for him to come in the morning and tell you he got caught up with his parents and stayed the night there or him going on “hunting trips” that will last longer than how it usually did. He was with her.
This whole time, he was in her arms while I lay worried about him. “I can’t believe this!” you hissed as you clenched your fists, you spent no time getting bags to pack his clothes in, there was no way you were going to keep letting him make a fool out of you.
Tears still flooded your face as you remember all the good times that you had with him, good times that will now become a far memory.
When Ao’nung finally came home, you were standing in the middle of the Marui, your back facing him, the bags off to the side packed.
“Hey tiyawn, I’m home,” he says as he comes closer to you trying to place his arms around your waist but you quickly move out of his reach and turn to him and hiss, leaving him with a shocked expression.
“Don’t you dare call me that or think of touching me with your filthy hands,” you bared your teeth at him once again putting distance between the two of you.
“Tiyaw-” You hissed again, cutting him off and he clears his throat. “Y/n, why are you acting this way?” He takes notice of your eyes that were puffy from all the crying you have been doing. “I saw you..” you say with a soft voice, finding it hard to talk to him knowing what he did.
“Saw what?” He tries to move closer to you but you step back not wanting him anywhere near you. “I saw you with her,” you hissed as you watched his expression change knowing that he finally caught on.
“You couldn't even have the decency to hold and kiss her somewhere private, making a whole fool out of me in front of the whole clan.” Your eyes welled up with tears once again but you fought them back.
“Do you love her?” You watch as he tries to avoid your gaze. “It’s complicated.”
“It’s not complicated at all, you either love her or you don’t,” His eyes finally meet yours, and knowing what he was going to say next still couldn’t prepare your heart from breaking.
“I do, I’m in love with her.” You let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding and walked over to the bags trying so hard not to break down and handed the bags over to him and he took it from you.
“Then I hope you have a good life with her far away from me.” He walks towards the entrance but stops and turns to face you. “I did love you and you would always have a place in my heart.”
He walks out the door and a sob escapes your mouth as the tears make their way down your face as you slid slowly to the ground just wanting to wake up from this terrible nightmare.
You didn’t know how long you sat in the same spot crying until you heard footsteps making their way to your home.
"[Name]?" You looked up at the man who was now standing at the entrance with concern in his eyes and you couldn't help but to fall apart even more.
